Hi everyone! Today on the show we have Michelle Dickinson. An author, a TEDx speaker, and Mental Health Strategist. What a pleasure it was to speak with Michelle. On top of talking about the current global pandemic, Michelle and I discuss mental health, how to deal with mental illness in life as well as in the workplace, and how open conversation is the solution. As Michelle explains beautifully: stigma cannot exist where there is open communication. I think that is brilliant. Happy listening! Marilyn Faulkner raised five rockstar children, helped her husband start multiple companies, got a Masters degree when she was 45, and published three books (with her next book due for publication in July). She spreads wisdom and laughter everywhere she goes, and she shares some of both on this week’s episode. (I dare you to listen to the entire 30 minutes without laughing aloud.) She is the mother of Alison Faulkner from TubbyTodd.com (https://tubbytodd.com/) . She also has three incredibly smart and successful sons who may or may not be able to keep up with their sisters in a dance contest. I’m waiting to see that. I met Marilyn at a branding workshop (https://alisonsbrandschool.com/events/june-29-2018-lindon-ut-build-an-awesome-brand-workshop-copy/) several years ago and immediately loved her. So when a podcast listener asked me to get a grandma on the podcast who could give us some “looking back” advice, I knew just who to ask. I wanted someone who would give us more than the trite “enjoy every minute” advice that we so often hear, and I knew Marilyn would deliver some true wisdom. Three Takeaways This is one of my favorite episodes to date, so listen in as she teaches us how to raise confident children by… 1) Limiting our criticisms. “You can’t build a wall by taking off bricks.” 2) Talking to our kids like they are already the intelligent adults we hope they will become. 3) Living full lives of our own, and modeling happiness for our children. Q+R: Your Questions About Jesus' Identity - God E17

This is our fourth Q+R related to our series outlining the character of God in the Bible. Tim and Jon responded to seven questions related to Jesus and His part in the divine identity in the Bible. Here are the questions and timestamps: Q1: (1:00) Evan from Suwanee, Georgia: You've talked about the wisdom, glory, word, and spirit of God and how biblical authors treat them as Yahweh but also distinct from Yahweh. Similarly, the angel of Yahweh is also written about in the same way. Trinitarians suggest God is three persons in one essence yet we see these four additional attributes and the angel of Yahweh treated in a similar manner. So my question is, how did the biblical authors treat the Father, Son, and Spirit differently that would lead to the Trinitarian viewpoint vs. a multi-faceted God who is more than just a triune Godhead? Thanks! Q2: (11:25) Lindsay from Breman, Indiana: I was wondering, you guys just spoke a little bit about how in the Gospel of John we see all of those threads coming together, such as God's wisdom, glory, and the word of God as distinct from Yahweh but Yahweh. Is there anything like that in the synoptic gospels? Thanks! Q3: (28:55) Chris from Orange County, California: If the idea of the Trinity is based on commonly held views by the Hebrews of a complex God then why were the Jews in Luke 22 and John 10 so incensed by Jesus' claim to be the son of God and why is that a common objection by Jews today? Q4: (33:10) Andrew from Gresham, Oregon: I have a question regarding Jesus as God. At the beginning of the Gospel of John, I've heard Jehovah's Witnesses say the church has always misunderstood that reference to the Word being God and it truly is saying that the Word was a god. With all the talk we've had about the various Elohim I'm wondering if there's some credence to that or if it really was saying that the Word was God proper. Thanks, guys! Q5: (36:55) Brandon from Provo, Utah: In previous podcasts, you talked about how personified wisdom and Jesus Himself are tied to Yahweh's transcendent nature by means of creation and exaltation imagery. What does it mean for Jesus to grant "the one that conquers" in Revelation 3 to sit with Jesus on His throne just like He conquered and sits with His Father on His throne? Is this part of what Jesus was praying for in John 17? Thanks! Q6: (43:10) Joel from South Carolina: While you guys were discussing the different attributes of God, it reminded me of how love is often described in the New Testament, specifically in 1 John 4:7-8. In verse 7 it says love is "from God" while in verse 8 it says God is love. So I was wondering whether love is considered to be a part of these attributes that are separate from God while at the same time being a part of God. Thank you! Q7: (46:45) Michael from Bangkok, Thailand: My question is about the identity for of mission of Jesus. When I was younger, I assumed that because Jesus was God He was aware of that His whole life. But when I see things like Jesus asking questions as a boy in the temple or Luke saying Jesus grew in wisdom it seems to me Jesus didn't start out with this inherent self-awareness of being God but went through a process learning about God and even His own identity as Messiah through the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit. So what does the Bible show us about Jesus' process of understanding His own identity? Thanks, guys. I’ve been through the book. I would recommend if you have not. It is a how-to and it tells you specific things you can do. Todd, thanks so much for being a guest on the show.  Thank you, Bob. Welcome to the People’s Republic of Boulder. Tell us a little bit about your business and who you serve.  I’m a former CEO and I now work with CEOs and help them lead better, profit more, and sleep soundly at night and hopefully without narcotics. That looks like coaching strategy work and has more organizational effectiveness, mostly CEOs of $50 million to $10 billion in range that I work with. Industry diagnostic and my work’s all over the country, a little bit of international. I hail from Boulder but don’t do much work here. For the folks who don’t know your background, when you’re out in the space, there are a lot of consultants around on there. You did this for a living before consulting? Yes. The reason I have a voice in this world is that there are all the mistakes I’ve probably made so there’s not much that my clients can screw up that I haven’t already screwed up. I can hopefully help them make different mistakes. I’m an operating guy so I can come at this coaching consulting thing from a senior’s perspective as opposed to a psyche community. I got an undergrad in psych, but I’ve made all of those mistakes. I had been in their moccasins and felt their pain and know it’s lonely at the top, so I get where they’re coming from. I was going through your book before the show and you have experience with Kinko’s and some rather large store. Let’s talk a little bit of the backstory or background of you and Kinko’s.  I stumbled into Kinko’s on a college long family connection, ran a store, then ran more and more stores. I eventually ended up on the board there and had 7,000 people working for me. This was during the growth years of Kinko’s and we just had an absolute blast. Building that company was so fun and I was there for twenty years. It was just a riot. In fact, one of your friends, Larry Hay, used to work for me when I was at Kinko’s, but I had a division office here. We eventually rolled that thing up and sold it to a private equity firm. I stayed for three years after that and ran a couple of other smaller organizations. That’s the short story. You were working for Kinko’s and for those that don’t know, it’s an office supply event, correct?  FedEx eventually bought them. They killed the name but it has been FedEx Office, which you would probably know them as now, that’s closest thing to what it was. There’s that time frame and you see it grow, you see the growing pains. I would imagine pretty much every problem that you could run across, you ran across. That’s part of the employment. There’s at some point where the organization started to mature. You guys were...

Panel: Aimee Knight Charles Max Wood Christopher Ferdinandi (Boston) Special Guests: Dan Shappir (Tel Aviv) In this episode, the panel talks with Dan Shappir who is a computer software developer and performance specialist at Wix.com. As Dan states, his job is to make 100 million websites (hosted on the Wix platform) load and execute faster! Past employment includes working for companies, such as: Ericom, Ericom Software, and BackWeb. He studied at Technion Institute of Management and currently lives in Tel Aviv, Israel. The panel talks about web performance API among other things. Check it out! Show Topics: 1:29 – Charles: Let us know who you are and why you’re famous! 1:39 – “Hello!” from Dan Shappir. 2:25 – Charles: You should say that you go to EACH site EVERY day out of the millions of sites out there. 2:53 – Charles: My mom mentioned Wix to me at first. My mom teaches High School Math. 3:16 – Dan: Yes that is our mission statement. That everyone can get a website without the knowledge of how to build a website. 3:52 – Aimee makes her comments. 3:59 – Dan: On our platform we try to offer people flexibility. There are bounds and limits, but people can do their very own thing, though. To make Wix faster because as we add more features and functionality that is our goal. 4:40 – Chuck: Okay, I know how to make X perform a little bit better. You are looking at a platform that controls TONS of sites, how do you even go about that? 4:58 – Dan: It is more difficult then that. We have millions of users leveraging the platform but there are a lot of developers in Wix who are developing the platform. I don’t think anyone at Wix has a total grasp of the complexity of the platform that we built. We have hundreds of frontend people working on our platform. All of them have pieces to the kingdom. We have processes in place with code reviews and whatnot, but there is so much going on. There is a change every 2 minutes, 24/7. We need to make sure progressing instead of regressing.  6:54 – Aimee: I think it was interesting in one of the links you sent over. Because you know when something is getting worse you consider that a bug. 7:15 – Dan: It is more than a bug because if we see regression in performance then that is a problem. I can literally see any part of the organization and say, “stop” if it will 7:57 – Chuck: We are talking about performance, but what does that mean? What measures are there? 8:15: Dan: We are looking at performance can mean different things in different contents. User sites, for example, most important aspect is load time. How quickly the page loads and gets open to the viewer to that specific site. When they click something they want it instantly and no drag time. It does change in different contexts. 9:58 – Chuck: People do talk about load time. People have different definitions of it. 10:12: Dan: Excellent question. When you look at the different sites through Wix. Different people who build sites – load time can mean something else to everybody. It can mean when you see the MAIN text or the MAIN image. If it’s on an ECON site then how soon can they purchase or on a booking site, how long can the person book X product. I heard someone at a conference say that load time is when: HERO TEXT And HERO IMAGE are displayed. 12:14 – Chuck: What is faster React or Vue? 12:21 – NEW HOST: Not sure. It all depends. 12:34 – Dan: We are big into React. We are one of the big React users outside of Facebook. I joined Wix four years ago, and even back then we were rebuilding our framework using React. One of our main modifications is because we wanted to do server-side rendered. 13:27 – Christopher asks Dan a question. 14:16 – Dan: We are in transition in this regard. Before we were totally client-site rendered, and that was the case until middle of last year. Then we deployed... Dan: We are 100% server-side rendered now. Some things we are still using JavaScript. We have another project going on now and it’s fully CSS, and little JavaScript as possible. What you might want to do with that site is... You might get in a few months every Wix site will be visible even if JavaScript is disabled. 16:26 – Aimee adds in her comments and observations to this topic. 16:55 – Dan: We don’t want things displayed incorrectly before it lays out. We hide the content while it’s downloading then make it visible. They lay-outing are done faster, because... 17:44 – Christopher asks Dan a question. 18:04 – Dan: I got into API... Either you are moving forward or are you moving back. AKA – You are either progressing or regressing. Different stages: 1.) Development stage 2.) Pre-Production (automated tools that check the performance with specific use cases) 3.) Check it out! It’s beneficial to use these APIs. 21:11 – Christopher: What is performance APIs? 21:38 – Dan: There is a working group – Todd from Microsoft and others who are exposing the information (that is available in the browser) out into the browser. When the browser downloads a certain source (image, font, etc.) it can measure the various stages of downloading that feature.  You have these different sages of downloading this resource. The browser can measure each of these stages and then expose them to you. Basically it’s for the browser to expose this information to you and in a way that is coherent and uniform. It essentially maintains this buffer that puts performance entries sequentially. Dan continues explaining this topic in detail. 25:55 – Dan: You have this internal buffer... 28:45 – Advertisement – Sentry – They support opensource. 29:39 – Christopher: everything you are saying seems that I can use this or that tab right now... Why would I prefer the API to something visual, hypothetically? 30:03 – Dan: Three Different Stages. (See above.) This information is very, very helpful during the developmental stage. Say you got a link from someone... Dan mentions: Performance.mark 34:04 – Aimee: When you were talking about resource-ends. Many people don’t know what this is. Can you spend 2-3 minutes about how you guys are using these? Are there people can add for big bang for their buck? 34:41 – Dan: This might want to be a topic for its own podcast show. Dan gives a definition of what a resource-end means. Go back to fonts as an example. Pre-connect for example, too. 39:03 – Dan: Like I said, it’s a huge topic. You have to exercise some care. Bandwidth is limited. Make sure you aren’t blocking other resources that you do need right now. 40:02 – Aimee: Sounds like a lot of great things to tap into. Another question I have is about bundling. 40:27 – Dan: One of the things that we try to do (given that we are depending on the JavaScript we are downloading) we need to download JavaScript content to the client side. It has been shown often that JS is the most impactful resources that you need to download. You really want to be as smart as possible with that. What is even more challenging is the network protocols are changing. Dan continues to go in-depth about this topic. Dan: What we have found is that you want to strive to bundle resources together. 44:10 – Aimee: Makes sense. 44:15 – Dan continues talking about this topic. 45:23 – Chuck asks two questions. The key decisions that have helped you and NewPointe Leadership is disappointing people at a rate they can handle it. People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision The three things people are looking for in leaders Create a place where people can fail doing the right thing. Nobody can ruin your life expect for you. Your view of God is the most important thing about you. You can't lead an organization until you are able to leave it. What helps you be consistent Humility is the key to every relationship. Spiritual leadership is taking responsibility for the health and development of your relationships. The importance of solitude. Our biggest challenges are the ones we fight within. There's nothing you can do to cause God to love you more. There's nothing you can do to cause God to love you less. I need to do what I believe is the right think and not think about what everyone else thinks about. --------------------------- *New Episode Every Tuesday* --------------------------- Thank you for listening to the Learner's Corner Podcast. What have you learned in failure that you couldn't learn in success? When you succeed you've stewarded well, but you're not learning much. If you don't set clear boundaries, someone else will. What to do and what not to do when leading creatives God's not surprised. Grace always wins. Music never stops being powerful. God's responsible for tomorrow. I'm responsible for today. --------------------------- *New Episode Every Tuesday* --------------------------- Thank you for listening to the Learner's Corner Podcast. Panel: Charles Max Wood Dave Kimura Eric Berry Special Guests: Jeff Kreeftmeijer In this episode of Ruby Rogues, the panel talks to Jeff Kreeftmeijer who is a Ruby and Elixir developer at AppSignal. Jeff writes for the AppSignal's newsletter and has a blog. Check out today’s episode where the panel talks about AppSignal, Russian doll caching, Drifting Ruby, JavaScript Sprinkles, cache warming, N+1 plus other topics. Show Topics: 2:47 – Code Fund & New Relic. 3:40 – AppSignal might be the only support for Elixir. 4:12 – The integration, the ease was so simple and your (Jeff) documentation made it very easy. 4:46 – Comparatively to New Relic, AppSignal is cheaper, isn’t it? 4:59 – We don’t charge for host, we charge per request. That’s where to difference in price comes from. You get a number of requests in your plan. AppSignal – you pay for what you use. 5:50 – Chuck has used New Relic in the past, but only pay for the month that he needs. 6:07 – Panelist talks with Josh Adams and relays the conversation to the panel and the guest. 6:48 – Eric to Dave: Do you run into this with Drifting Ruby? Where people just pay for what they need and cancel afterwards. 7:41 – Dave: Yes, I do come across this. There isn’t much you can do about it. People will do what they need to do. 8:24 – Jeff: We don’t have a lot of this problem with AppSignal. By the way, I have never done that before – you are all horrible! ☺ 9:02 – Chuck: Let’s dive into is what is your approach to performance on Rails? 9:24 – We started the vlog series to help them with that. Sometimes you run into limits of what Ruby can do, and stuff like caching can help. It’s never really a single issue. That’s one of our challenges as a company to hook into everything (integration). We do support, per communication, to help with tech issues, but usually it’s set-up related. Everybody’s problems are different because everyone’s set-up is different. 11:02 – Chuck: Most of these posts are about caching and other topics. I’m going to go to something that I misunderstood for a while and that is Russian doll caching. I didn’t quite make the connection in my head. 11:40 – First, let’s talk about fragment caching. 13:49 – Jeff explains Russian doll caching. 18:44 – Chuck makes comments and asks Jeff a question. 19:43 – Jeff confirms the panelist’s answer. 22:00 – Jeff: Another solution is JavaScript Sprinkles. 22:27 – Digital Ocean’s Advertisement. 23:12 – Question from Chuck to Jeff. 23:38 – Chuck talks about what he will discuss at the Summit conference in October. 23:55 – Panelist has had experience with Russian doll caching. Performance can be smoke in mirrors. Application he worked on before, we did tons of caching (query caching, Russian doll caching, and others) it was all about handling the cache key. 25:32 – More comments about caching from another panelist. Cache warming is mentioned, too. 26:46 – How do you utilize cache warming? 27:39 – Chuck asks a question. 27:44 – Question answered. 28:12 – Does something like this exist for Phoenix? 28:28 – Jeff: I don’t think there is something like that for Phoenix. 28:50 – Chuck: When do you want to use one caching over another caching? 29:09 – Jeff: “Depends on a couple of things. N+1 is a feature and that you “should” rely on Russian doll caching, and generally that is not an accepted thing. You could do that, but that is applied to a specific thing. What do you guys think?” 30:31 – Panelist: Rendering partials is an expensive endeavor. 31:38 – This topic continues between panelists and Jeff. 32:25 – Jeff: Fragment caching is a good fit for that. 32:56 – Question: You have a blog, one of your posts that you talk about you discuss open source projects maintainable. Talk to me how that led you to write it? 33:32 – Jeff: Three things you should not do, based on mistakes that I made in the past. 1.) Navvy – had adapters for everything. 2.) Dropping support for older visions of your dependencies. 3.) Hand over projects if you can’t help anymore. This whole article is based on me messing up. 35:07 – Chuck makes some comments. 35:27 – Panelist: Ran into a problem the other day, there is a dependency that hasn’t been updated in over a year. They are waiting to solve all issues. I submitted an issue to be resolved. 37:02 – N+1 Queries – is it a bug or a feature? 37:12 – If you do nothing with it then it is a bug. 37:21 – Chuck: to me a bug is an issue. It’s not a bug it’s inefficiency unless you turn it into something else. 37:42 – Jeff: N+1 is an undesirable feature? It’s not necessarily a bug. Why we don't have spiritual conversations There is a link between the words we use and the ways we think and behave. Every language will change or die. How Jonathan reimagined the word, pain. How people can begin to reimagine words Words are essential to the Christian faith. We have to stop just talking about things and start embodying things. Most people are obsessed with finding the right answers, but I'm obsessed with asking the right questions. The best teachers are often people. If you don't take risks you're going to have to accept some regret. If you do take risks you're going to have to deal with failure.
