Have you ever considered what it would take to create an atmosphere where once experienced I'm hooked, spoiled, and don't want to go anywhere else?  Is your customer care so thick, so profound, and so powerful that once experienced, all other business I patronize pale in comparison.  What would it mean for any business that achieves this level of service?  For many business owners this may seem difficult or even impossible to achieve.  The hardest part is wrapping your head around what it truly takes, only then, can you see and act on the how.  In today's episode Mitch and I explore this idea and the endless possibilities.

Are you making excuses for staff that underperforms?  Have you ignored unacceptable behavior or changed policy for fear of losing someone?  Well if you have you're not alone.  Most every business owner will find themselves in this place at least once in their career if not multiple times.  The good news is it doesn't have to be this way.  Today my friends Sarah and Stephen Konyndyk of Endurance Auto Repair tell their extremely powerful, very relatable story of when this happened to them, and lessons learned.  If you are a business leader, this podcast is a must listen for you.

Session Reflection: - Most business owners are too busy trying to satisfy the customers wants, needs, and expectations, to actually satisfy the customers wants, needs, and expectations! - Have you ever experienced the pain of being a customer of an auto repair shop?  Do you really understand the pain and difficulty a customer really goes through to get their vehicle to you?  Shouldn't you recognize this huge commitment being made by your customer! - Pick one: You can do a fantastic job with the vehicle while giving mediocre service, and risk losing them, or you can give them exceptional service while doing a mediocre job with their vehicle, and they will likely forgive you. - It's not about how many customers you make, it's how many you keep! - You will find it's cheaper to keep them coming back.  It costs up to 10 times more to by a new customer than to keep the ones you have. - When was the last time you asked yourself, Why do people really come to you?  What makes you stand out in their minds?  Are you their total convenience solution? - Can you finish this sentence?  I know I'm more expensive than other shops, but... - How do you demonstrate your love for your customers? - No customer expects you to be perfect all the time, so how you handle things when the customer did not get what they expected, is the true measure of how much you care and your real integrity. - Every broken vehicle is accompanied by a broken customer.  How often does this get forgotten?  Both must be addressed at every visit. - If your in business, you should study psychology.  Build your empathy muscles! - How do you recognize and truly show appreciation for your customers as well as your staff? Synopsis: The car screeched to a stop next to the guard rail, rocks and dirt tumbling into the canyon below. Kurt was trying to escape his life and his business... and he almost succeeded. Then, a chance encounter led him to a unique auto repair shop, and its wise owner who challenged Kurt’s view of reality. FIXING THE CAR WAS EASY. BUT COULD KURT FIX HIMSELF? Misfire is a remarkable journey that begins when a broken car and a broken contractor pull into the most unconventional auto repair shop imaginable. It mixes a lifetime of learning into a suite of principles that can be tailored to any small business, including: How to create profit in advance, rather than hope it will magically appear later on How to replace anxiety and frustration with mindfulness and flexibility How unconventional thinking can transform your business and your life The story of Misfire demonstrates how Eastern philosophy and Western pragmatism can reshape your business, your family, and your very soul. It’s for any entrepreneur who has felt that something is missing, something isn’t running on all cylinders, and that the right answer lays just out of reach. The key to what’s missing is found within these pages. Author Mitch Schneider is an entrepreneur, master technician, martial artist, and trade journalist. This is his first novel. From the Author: Misfire may be different from any other book you have ever encountered. Like me -- a stem cell/bone marrow transplant patient with both my donor's DNA and my own -- it is a chimera. It is the story of Kurt Kerrigan, a small business owner whose life is spiraling down out of control, and his chance encounter with most unusual of auto repair shops. There, Kurt's exposure to Eastern philosophy, martial arts and real-world business tools set him on a profoundly different course. These are real-world management tools and lessons gleaned from 50-plus years of small business experience, operation, and ownership, gently interspersed throughout the pages of a compelling story about people and situations you will surely recognize and can truly relate to. I am sure you will enjoy Misfire: What to Do When Things Aren't Running on All Cylinders, almost as much as I enjoyed writing it and hope you will share information about its valuable content with everyone you know.

Mitch Schneider refers to himself as a Change Agent and Chief Thought Provoker. He champions the idea of assessing one’s self and looking for solutions in times of crisis. He is the author of Misfire: What To Do When Things Aren’t Running On All Cylinders where he tells the story of a business owner’s unorthodox path to success. Mitch has over 40 years of experience in the automotive industry and cites this as the reason behind the way his book is titled.   Mitch joins me today to discuss the contents of his new book and the reasons behind its authorship. He shares the greatest challenge he ever faced and how he managed to come out a winner. He explains why failure is part of the process and why the bigger your dreams are, the more you will fail. Mitch also describes what being a mechanic for over 40 years taught him about life and how much influence it had on his book.       “It's not that champions have the skill and ability to win; it's that they have too much pride to lose.”- Mitch Schneider       Today on Mastering Midlife:   What you can do when certain aspects of your life aren't going as planned. How his experience as a mechanic inspired him to write his book. The stem cell therapy he received and how it improved his way of life. The lessons he wants readers to take from his book. Why the first thing you learn in life is how to fall. Explaining the different sections of his book. Mitch Schneider released the novel MISFIRE: What to Do When Everything Isn’t Running on All Cylinders. Mitch will give you a glimpse into the book and how he sees it helping aftermarket professionals improve their lives and their business. He shares the genesis of the book and his work to complete it so all aftermarketers benefit. It started as an outline seven years ago, to a full-fledged 300+ paged novel that has, (https://amzn.to/2V34oAx) I believe, a unique feature. Short chapters. No doubt the book will read easy and teach many. Mitch Schneider is a fourth-generation “mechanic/technician” recognized as a champion of service dealer and technician causes. Mitch is an award-winning journalist, former shop owner, and published novelist. For more than 37 years, Mitch operated Schneider’s Automotive — a successful 6-bay, family-owned and operated service facility in Simi Valley, Calif. Mitch has recent great news on the biggest challenge in his life as he has taken on  Primary Myelofibrosis, a rare bone cancer, head-on. He is in his recovery after a successful stem cell /bone marrow transplant in April 2019. I’m so glad to have him back to discuss his novel Misfire: What to Do When Things Aren’t Running on All Cylinders. Look for Mitch’s other episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=mitch+schneider) . Find the book at books page (https://remarkableresults.biz/books/) on this website Key Lessons from the Book: The stress, pressure, and anxiety of trying to support a business that is marginal or failing The impact that can have on a shop owner’s personal life: On their financial life The availability of tools and technologies to ‘fix’ a shop and the folks who refuse to take advantage of them The critical impact the Body/Mind Connection can have on success The critical role understanding 4-Cycle Internal Combusting Engine function can have fixing your business The impact elements of Eastern Philosophy and Martial Arts can have when integrated into your business: power, force vs impact, balance, flexibility, being grounded, centered, etc. Resources: Thanks to Mitch Scheider for his contribution to the aftermarket’s premier podcast. Mitch is also a consultant, entrepreneur, an award-winning journalist, speaker, and author.  For more than 37 years, Mitch operated Schneider’s Automotive — a successful 6-bay, family-owned and operated service facility in Simi Valley, Calif. Look for Mitch’s other episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=mitch+schneider) . Schneider is a frequent speaker at major conventions and meetings of automotive industry trade organizations, where he addresses the challenges and problems affecting the automotive service industry and has keynoted or presented for some of the nation’s most successful automotive organizations. Mitch is also the author of Misfire: What to Do When Everything Isn’t Running on All Cylinders, an allegorical small business novel about to be published, as well as an eight-volume Automotive Service Management Series published by Cengage Learning. Look for a coming episode on this book. Key Talking Points: Mitch gave a speech “Give Me Your Tired and Broken Cars” as a State of the Industry address for ETI’s Fall Meeting in 1984. Thirty-five years later Mitch sees a very similar landscape in the aftermarket. He understood the industry so well at that time. That speech started his career as an industry influencer, writer, speaker. He gave this speech 12 times that year. Mitch asks the question: “If we wanted it fixed would we have fixed it years ago?” Need to create own voice for the aftermarket, an organization that can speak for us He actually started a federation of qualified technicians. It grew but became too expensive to support; nothing like we have today with social media.   He believes strongly in licensing and certifications for technicians   He strongly supports ASE We need to get together and talk about what we can and cannot do We do not have any best practices that are published   There is more to the profession than calling yourself a professional  We need to accept that there are different levels of performance within the industry Data acquisition, mechanical, diagnostics He believes many within the industry are being paid what we are worth Independents need to learn how to attract the right talent Right to Repair initiative polarized the industry We can be interdependent instead of independent There are  better shops today because Mitch had influence in his writing and speaking We need to become better communicators  Are we taking care of ourselves? Face masks Gloves Safety shoes Minimize work with petrochemicals  and solvents  Our industry is intensive in these areas: Equipment Labor Physically Liability Environmental responsibility We need to create a General Accepted Automotive Principles just like the account have with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) The supplier groups are strong and the manufacturers are weaker   Here are his points from that speech from 1984 Stereotype Stigma Technician Shortage: Industry Graying/Shrinking from either retirement or seasoned technicians abandoning the industry to pursue other interests Scarcity of ‘good’ mechanics/technicians Dangers from chemical exposure to carcinogenic chemicals – Who knew? High Stress Inadequate compensation: the person who builds the vehicle makes exponentially more than the person who keeps it running…  An unrealistic belief that someone will always be there to service, maintain or repair the vehicle A reality that there are different and distinct skillsets for mechanics and technicians The explosion of technology that occurred between 1978 and 1984… And, what has transpired since  An ongoing problem of who finds their way into the industry and where they finally land: what percentage come from trade...

The album is being remastered for an August re-issue that will feature bonus tracks, rare demos, and other sonic goodies. Publishing Schneider, an award-winning journalist, is a regular contributor and Senior Contributing Editor for 10 Missions Publishing appearing in Ratchet + Wrench magazine. Online, his columns can be found on RatchetandWrench.com. Mitch covers the experiences shared by service technicians, garage owners and consumers in today’s rapidly changing automotive service environment and provides commentary on the evolving relationship between service dealers, jobbers, warehouse distributors and manufacturers. Mitch is also the author of Misfire: What to Do When Everything Isn’t Running on All Cylinders, an allegorical small business novel about to be published, as well as an eight-volume Automotive Service Management Series published by Cengage Learning. Schneider’s Automotive For more than 37 years, Schneider operated Schneider’s Automotive — a successful 6-bay, family-owned and operated service facility in Simi Valley, Calif.  Schneider’s Automotive has won recognition throughout the area, including being twice ranked among Los Angeles magazine’s annual list of 100 best repair facilities (even though Schneider’s Automotive is not in Los Angeles).  Schneider’s Automotive was recently sold. Mr. Schneider served as the first Director of the Car Care Professionals (CCPN), a segment of the AAIA, the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association and is the president and founder of Mitch Schneider’s Future-Tech, a service company specializing in management education and training for automotive service dealers, jobbers, warehouse distribution companies and manufacturers and has shared his knowledge and insight with the automotive aftermarket since 1984. Key Talking Points: Mitch continues, even though he sold his shop, talking to his business coach to stay engaged with the industry. A professional technician since 1966. He sold his business two years ago. Mitch found his passion to speak to the industry via ETI (Equipment and Tool Institute) where he gave a ‘state of the industry’ message when he replaced the person who could not make the event. This was 1984. Part of the inspiration that Mitch used to give the speech was that his children were smart enough to go to a top college, but he knew he was not making enough money repairing cars to sent his children to college. This was the underlying anger that was bothering him. Mitch says we are still facing the same problems today that we were in 1984 He gave the speech seven times that year. It was in Corpus Cristi when some of his written vinuetes fell out of his briefcase and a person helped him pick them up. The person started to look at them and wanted Mitch to know if it was good stuff. That person was the editor or Motor Service Magazine. That is when he realized he may have something to say that could change the industry. It is encouraging to see the people who have received the message that the industry keeps giving. They have done well. However it is the same people that keep attending classes, read articles and listen to podcasts to help them improve. So many are terrified of success or change in a positive direction because they have no idea how success will change their life. They are willing to endure the pain and frustration where they are instead of breaking out. We need to help those who want help to become more successful. We need to extend a hand. I see the pain you are in and how hard you are...
