W/C 18th November 2024I am dedicating this week's TFM to the person I sat next to on the train travelling to Manchester on Wednesday. You are going to hear all about it (obvs) but just to be clear the naming of the episode is most definitely for you.Which brings us to the album that particular track originates from, which is of course Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty. As it happens I had been listening to that long-player just the week before, and one particular moment that I had completely forgotten about had made me smile. At the end of Runnin' Down A Dream there is a little interlude where Tom instructs the listener that because you are listening to the CD version of the album, there will now be a slight pause to allow those listening on cassette or record to get up and turn the album over. Genius.Stay safe.I Won't Back Down - Tom PettyTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw - it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. If you want to keep in touch with TFM and the other stuff I do then please follow me on Facebook, Insta, Twitter or Patreon. Thanks for getting this far.

Send us a Text Message. In Part II of my interview with former Actor/Radio DJ Jimmy Baron, we cracked open the vault of personal music memories. Picture this: Music Midtown Festival '95, where my chance encounter with Jimmy Baron led to him recommending seeing the band Cake's performance who we both still listen to. Throughout our chat, we unearthed the anthems that defined a generation, from Twisted Sister's raucous "Stay Hungry" to the enduring charm of Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever" – an album that defied initial rejections to become a classic hit. We mused over how tracks like "I Won't Back Down" become part of our collective consciousness, uniting us in a chorus of resilience and remembrance of the artists who've left their indelible marks on our hearts. We celebrated the 30th anniversary of Weezer's 'Blue Album' and relived songs like "Come Undone" and "Buddy Holly". Strapping on our nostalgia skates, we glided back to the days of 99X and Dave FM. On a more personal note, Jimmy Baron shared the tale of his own career pivot from the radio biz to real estate, reveling in the unexpected fulfillment of helping clients find their dream homes. Embracing his mother's wisdom to zero in on what truly matters, he found a fresh beat in the rhythm of life, proving that sometimes the B-side of our careers can produce the greatest hits.
Because all of us presenters live in Georgia it is hard for us to believe that Cosmic Thing, the fifth studio album from The B-52's was the international breakthrough album. We had been listening to “Rock Lobster” and “Private Idaho” for about a decade before this album came out. But much of the B-52's discography was confined to college radio stations outside of their home state. Cosmic Thing would really put the group on the map nationally and internationally. This album was also a comeback for the group. The original group consisted of Fred Schneider on vocals, Kate Pierson on vocals and keyboard, Cindy Wilson on vocals and tambourine, Ricky Wilson on guitars, and Keith Strickland on percussion. Ricky Wilson died of AIDS in October 1985, and hadn't told the band other than Keith Strickland that he had the then-terminal disease because he didn't want anyone worrying or fussing over him. His death devastated the group, particularly his sister, Cindy Wilson. The band did not tour to promote their 1985 album release “Bouncing off the Satellites,” nor did they put out any new music until 1989.When they got back together they decided to remain a foursome. Keith Strickland moved to guitar and they brought in session drummers to fill in. It took about a year to compose the songs from this album, with the group spending a lot of time working through their grief in the loss of Ricky Wilson. The resulting album, however, was a tremendous success, with two songs breaking into the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, the first songs of the group to do so.Bruce brings us this comeback album in this week's podcast. Love ShackThis has become the B-52's signature song. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 - the group's first top 40 hit. The inspiration for this song was partly an African American club outside Athens, Georgia, called the “Hawaiian Ha-Le.” It was a place that looked like a shack from the outside, but hosted a great selection of bands.Cosmic ThingThe title track and lead-off song to the album preceded the album by a few months. It was released on the soundtrack to the film “Earth Girls Are Easy.” It is also known as “(Shake That) Cosmic Thing.”Channel ZA deeper cut , this track has a little more political feel. It discusses the changes happening in the world, along with pollution, radiation, and other concerns. “Space junk, laser bombs, ozone holes, better put up my umbrella!” The band never lost their dance connection, with songs leaning more towards party and less towards politics.RoamThe second big hit leads off side 2, and also went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson duet on this song, making it the only vocal track on the album in which Fred Schneider doesn't have a vocal. It was the second and final US top-10 hit for the group. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:It Had to Be You by Harry Connick, Jr. (from the motion picture “When Harry Met Sally”)Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star in this romantic comedy, with Harry Connick, Jr. providing most of the soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:I'll Be You by the ReplacementsWayne features a Minnesota band which got their start in the punk genre before moving to alternative rock. This song plays in the bachelor party in the 1996 comedy “Jerry Maguire.” The replacements formed in 1979, and it would be 10 years before this song would be their sole entry into the top 100, peaking at number 51.Free Fallin' by Tom PettyLynch's staff pick is a big hit off Petty's solo album “Full Moon Fever.” This song documents the feelings that a guy has after breaking up with his girl. Petty has ELO founder and fellow Traveling Wilburys member Jeff Lynne joining him on this single, providing synthesizer, bass, acoustic guitar, and backing vocals.Lay Your Hands On Me by Bon JoviRob brings us an epic rock song from Jon Bon Jovi off the album “New Jersey.” This one hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, the fourth single from the album to break into the top 10 on the pop charts. Dolly Parton covered this single in 2014, rearranged as a gospel song.If Dirt Were Dollars by Don HenleyBruce closes out the staff picks with a deeper cut off Henley's massive album “End of the Innocence.” Never one to shy away from politics and culture, Henley rails in this track against materialism, hypocrisy, false patriotism, and hubris. “These days the buck stops nowhere, no one takes the blame. But evil is still evil in anybody's name.” INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:It Had to Be You by Harry Connick, Jr.We double dip on the Entertainment track to end this week's podcast, as Connick did a vocal and instrumental version of this classic song. When author Paul Zollo asks Tom about the song in his book Conversations With Tom Petty, and mentions that the song had been partially written some years previously, Tom confirms this, saying, “That was one I wrote during the Full Moon Fever sessions. I wrote all but the chorus. I just had the loop going around and around and really had most of the words and everything. And I played the tape for Rick Rubin and he liked it a lot and suggested I write a chorus. There were maybe five years between the writing of the verses and the chorus.” Of course, all hardcore Pettyheads know that the lyrics that Tom initially came up with in the chorus were very different to what ended up on the recording. In 2020, Mike Campbell told Vulture magazine, “What's funny is that when Tom wrote this song, when he first showed it to me, the chorus was, “Hey Indiana girl, go out and find the world.” It was a completely different chorus and we all hated it. A few days later Tom came in and sang, “Last dance for[sic] Mary Jane.”Today's episode covers the first single from the Greatest Hits release, the iconic "Mary Jane's Last Dance".You can listen (and watch) to the song here: https://youtu.be/aowSGxim_O8 To hear the live version from the Fillmore, check that here: https://youtu.be/KTW349WRTsQ The podcast I promoted in this week's episode, And The Podcast Will Rock, can be found here: https://shows.acast.com/podcastwillrock The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. In Conversations With Tom Petty, when author Paul Zollo asks about the origins of the song, Tom explains “It was when Jeff and George (Jeff Lynne and George Harrison obviously), went out to Anaheim to ask Roy Orbison to be in the band (the Traveling Wilburys, again obviously). We were writing everything we saw. One line I remember that we saw on a billboard was “every day is judgment day”. That later turned up in “End of the Line”, the Wilburys song.” He goes on to explain that “We stopped at a restaurant on the way back and these punky-looking guys recognized us and came over. I said “Where have you been? Where are you playing?” and they said “The Zombie Zoo” and out came the pads…”Today's episode covers the last track from Full Moon Fever, Zombie zoo.You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/hZTkF2cx9z4The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. I do wonder whether the friend who's treehouse he's slept in is the same girl from the opening verse. There's almost a Forrest and Jenny vibe to it if you link those two verses. “She never looked different but something would change” is later in the timeline, and the later treehouse reference snaps you back to a more innocent time. I know that this isn't the case because the third verse is ad-libbed, but hey, it's fun to paint your own pictures on the canvas that Tom provides sometimes so I'm going with it!Today's episode covers the penultimate track from side two of Full Moon Fever, A Mind with a Heart of Its Own.You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/QwZwJPbb__gIf you want to listen to the bootleg version, on February 1, 1990 in Providence, Rhode Island, check that out here: https://youtu.be/TBZZQZvHuFEThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Everything is alright. For now at least. And that's where I think this song becomes much more interesting. Despite the light fluffiness of the verse progression and the sincere expression of adoration in the lyrics, that caveat on the title line, we're alright “for now” belies a slight tension in Tom's state of mind. Now, it just could that no other words fit as well as “for now”, but given that Tom was very rarely glib about word choice, I would say that this deliberate inclusion of doubt either betrays his emotional state at the time or possibly his unwillingness to be absolute in his assertion that everything will be fine.Today's episode covers the fifth track from side two of Full Moon Fever, Alright For Now.You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/l4zpU9T937IFor the live version from the Fillmore '97 release, go here: https://youtu.be/s2TO2XljJCc and for the release from the Live Anthology boxet, go here: https://youtu.be/UHjTWYaQm-YThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Something that my season seven guest Ivan Anderson said that stuck with me, was that “Listen to Her Heart” is a 'little' song. And by that, he wasn't being dismissive. He was saying that it wasn't covering a weighty topic and it was compact and accessible. I'd say exactly the same thing about this one. It's neat and compact. It has a superb hook in the pre-chorus and the whole thing is imminently hummable. It's a pretty perfect little pop song.Today's episode covers the third track from side two of Full Moon Fever, Depending On You.You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/IjVGlKa2rL0 Check out the Skynyrd Reconsyrdyrd podcast here: https://twitter.com/skynyrdpodcast and the And Volume 4 All... podcast here: https://twitter.com/AV4APodThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Yer So Bad could almost be the most important song in the entire Tom Petty canon. Almost. Probably not the most important, but it was the first song that Tom showed to Jeff Lynne and from there, the rest of Full Moon Fever and then The Traveling Wilburys dropped effortlessly into place. You have to think there was a little magic in the air that night. Tom tells Paul Zollo, “It was around this time that I showed Jeff one night that I had written the song ‘Yer So Bad'. But there was one little bit in the B section where I didn't know where to go. He showed me this e minor chord and that kinda opened it all up to me.” The story concludes with Tom asking Jeff “Will you produce this?” and Jeff responding, “Sure, let's do it. Where should we record it?” The rest, of course, is rock n roll history made via Mike Campbell's spare bedroom. You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/WdRViFCvvUo And if you want to check out The Byrds' original, you can find that here: https://youtu.be/SgMCvfI5-l0 The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. “I'm gonna free fall out into nothin'. Gonna leave this world for awhile.” This is exactly what great music does to me. It takes me out of my body and out into the creative ether. It helps me let go of anxiety or sadness or anger or grief and just soar on the music. I know that not everyone has that experience with music but it's like a drug in a lot of ways. It alters your mood, changes your perception and allows you to truly escape to a place that no-one and nothing else matters.Today's episode covers the first track from the iconic Full Moon Fever; Free Fallin'Check out the song here: https://youtu.be/1lWJXDG2i0AThe live version is here: https://youtu.be/VSKiosRdJ2kJohn Mayer's excellent cover is here: https://youtu.be/20Ov0cDPZy8The isolated bass is here: https://youtu.be/SnRpwbKvJkEIf you want to hear me chat about Van Halen, find that here: https://podcastwillrock.com/2023/06/29/episode-86-blood-and-fire/And you can hear me on the SeanGeek and FastFret podcast here:https://tinyurl.com/4fb68dfu and here: https://tinyurl.com/2kcnez64If you are able to donate financially to humanitarian aid relief efforts in Ukraine, the Red Cross is coordinating a large-scale effort which you can contribute to by visiting their website here: https://donate.redcross.ca/page/100227/donate/1The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Hi folks. Technical difficulties and scheduling have prevented me from recording episode one for season eight, so I have compiled the first Twelve answers to my first quick fire question. It's interesting that there were so many different answers to what I imagined would be a pretty straight arm wrestle between Damn The Torpedoes, Wallflowers, and Full Moon Fever! But that's the beauty of Tom's cataloguel; there's something for everyone! In order, the people answering the questions are; Dallas Heliker, Gwen Jones, Nic Apostoleris, Janet Lovell, Jeff Slate, Megan Volpert, Dan Spiess, Corey Morrissette, Katie Moulton, Michael Washburn, Ivan Anderson, and.... me!If you are able to donate financially to humanitarian aid relief efforts in Ukraine, the Red Cross is coordinating a large-scale effort which you can contribute to by visiting their website here: https://donate.redcross.ca/page/100227/donate/1The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Happy 150th episode, Goosebuddies! If episodes were Pokemon this would be MewTwo, which is a pretty cool thing to be in any comparison. Speaking of mutant monsters, this episode has Chad, Paul, and Kevin reading R.L. Stine's Goosebumps 2000 book Full Moon Fever. We need to be clear: this is not about werewolves! Yes, these beast children are supposedly transformed by the moon and covered in fur and love howling but this is different than lycanthropy! We're stunned by how buck wild this book gets with real stakes, crazy turns, and the potential of eating parents. Is this the best Goosebumps book we've ever read? Begguya - Mount hunter - at 14,537 feet tall - a massif that is dominated in scale by its neighbors Sultana and Denali - but a mountain that dominates the minds and hearts of many a mountaineer. And this was the case for Alaskan alpinist Clint Helander in the spring of 2021 when on a hunch, he called August Franzen - a young Alaskan climber who'd been making a name for himself on the frozen waterfalls of Valdez - with a proposition. To attempt a monolithic line on the unclimbed West Buttress of Mount Hunter. Franzen agreed instantly, and in May of 2021, the duo flew into Denali Basecamp. The route, which starts with a 9 mile ski from Denali basecamp, weaves its way up and through the broken labyrinth of the Ramen Icefall, up to a dicey corniced ridge, then through a plum line up the golden granite buttress, before finally topping out on a plateau below the south summit. But on that first trip, many lessons had to be learned. First, Helander took a 30 foot crevasse fall in the icefall. Able to extract himself, the team was shaken, but continued on. 19 hours later, they shivered through a miserable night a few pitches up the crux buttress - a lone soggy sleeping bag shared between them. Mentally and physically exhausted, they retreated the next morning. But as they took the edge off with whisky in basecamp a day later, the duo made a pact. They would return to finish the west buttress.Links:Climbing MagazineThe Firn Line Website

As long as humans have been looking up to the sky, we have been fascinated by the moon. And once a month, that mysterious jewel in the sky appears big and bright and full, giving us even more to wonder about. Lycanthropy is the transformation of a person into a wolf and stories of this curse date all the way back to the Epic of Gilgamesh. Werewolves even show up in Greek mythology in the Legend of Lycaon. Since these stories have endured, it's no surprise that they showed up in movies very early. The first movie featuring a lycanthrope was The Werewolf from 1913. Unfortunately, it was lost to fire and can never be seen again. But a few years later, a silent western called Wolf Blood (1925) appeared and can still be viewed. The 1935 film Wolf Blood starring Henry Hull gave us some of the tropes we still use today, such as the curse being passed on by a bite, transformations occurring because of a full moon, and that the cursed will try to lock themselves up to protect others. The popularity has never disappeared in cinema. We still remember some legendary and groundbreaking films such as Universal's The Wolf Man (1941) and An American Werewolf in London (1981) which started a new chapter in special effects. Plus, a few fun ones like Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf (1985) Check out some classic (and wonderfully cheesy) films from Full Moon Entertainment. Or some classic music about our lunar neighbor like Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty, Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival, or Moonage Daydream by David Bowie. But the movies aren't the only place you can see people howling. Cartoons gave us the Groovy Ghoulies and Fang Face. And even our breakfast is not immune to the moon when you eat Frute Brute cereal. What's your favorite story of the moon? Do you stay indoors when the moon is full? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Fly Me to the Moon” will get a special mention on the show. Yeah, it's true that "Full Moon Fever" was a good Tom Petty record, but Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott weren't doing a review of the 5x Platinum 1989 album. The moon - the real moon - went full this week, and they were talking about it, because wow...the fishing sure was different because of it.Find out what changed, how they handled it, and most importantly, how much things are going to change in the week ahead.
