Thanks to our partners Promotive and Wicked FileIn this episode of Business by the Numbers, Hunt Demarest of Paarmelis & Associates breaks down one of the most misunderstood metrics in the automotive repair world: effective labor rate. Many shop owners chase “higher door rates,” but as Hunt reveals, that number often has little to do with your actual profit. From oil changes to state inspections, he explains how small pricing decisions can quietly eat away at your margins—and how to fix them.If you've ever asked, “What percentage should my effective labor rate be compared to my door rate?”—this episode is your wake-up call.Hunt also shares how two shops charging wildly different rates can end up with the same revenue, why discounting can destroy profitability, and what you should really track to make more money without working harder. What you'll learn(01:20) “What's a good percentage for effective labor rate?”(02:10) Why a 75% effective rate isn't always bad—and why 100% isn't always good.(03:40) Real-world variance of top-performing shops (04:50) Understanding how door rate differs from effective labor rate.(05:40) The $75 oil change that's secretly earning you just $30/hour.(07:15) How two shops can charge the same customer price but get different profit outcomes.(11:30) Working smarter, not harder.(13:00) Why chasing “door rate” vanity metrics is a trap.(16:10) Pricing and productivity—and which one you're probably ignoring.(17:40) How ignoring effective rates hides true performance.(18:50) Real client case study: Texas shop struggling with low effective rate due to state inspections.(20:00) Action steps: How to spot your low-performing categories and limit the downside. Thanks to our partner PromotiveIt's time to hire a superstar for your business; what a grind you have in front of you. Thanks to our Partners, NAPA Auto Care and NAPA TRACS Watch Full Video Episode David Boyd, Six Sigma Black Belt, emphasizes that defined processes and systems are essential for shop efficiency and growth. Every task follows a process, whether recognized or not, and “rapid toggling” (doing the same job differently each day) leads to chaos. Key Insights: Define Processes: Ask “Why do you do it that way?” to uncover gaps and create consistency. Use DMAIC: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control, establish “normal” and fix what's “abnormal.” Apply Lean Thinking: Reduce wasted motion and idle time (e.g., proper tool placement, faster approvals). Link KPIs to Action: Observe workflows directly (“management by walking around”), not just reports. Commit to Continuous Improvement: It's a loop, not a one-time fix. For MSOs: Scaling requires standardized systems and local accountability. The payoff: higher efficiency, stronger customer experience, productive technicians, fewer mistakes, and sustainable growth. At 12:23 p.m. on Nov. 16, a man is seen on surveillance video wearing a white shawl on his head and a brown coat. Cars whiz by as he stands on the I-80 onramp off South Van Ness, uphill from a homeless encampment. He lights what looks like a cigarette, takes a couple of drags, crouches, then hurls a burning piece of cloth about 10 feet. It lands on top of a tent. Within minutes, the entire encampment is consumed by flames. A woman and man jump out of a nearby tent and flee uphill. “Get out of there!” a woman yells repeatedly.BOOM! A large explosion, likely from a propane tank, sends burning bits of eucalyptus tree flying everywhere.

The lack of affordable housing, the younger generation's tendency to adopt dogs instead of having children, and other challenges of the modern world are slowly changing employees' expectations. From the environment in the workspace to their relationship with management, what used to make an auto shop "sticky" for internal customers has evolved. Younger generations now seek workplaces that serve as their "third place," providing a sense of community and belonging beyond just a job.In this episode, Anthony Wrixon from OC Automotive and Diagnostic offers a glimpse of how the automotive industry will (should?) look in the next 30 to 40 years. Between Anthony's decision to stop for someone else and establishing his auto shop in La Habra, California, Anthony gathered dozens of tools from ATI's one-day boot camps, got coached a lot, and learned through trial and error how to build a culture that fitted both his and his internal customers' expectations.Throughout this conversation, Anthony talks about his journey in the automotive industry from internal customer to shop owner, his thoughts on making technicians feel comfortable with him as an owner yet still respecting hierarchies, and how to build healthy relationships at the workplace. Anthony also talks about the importance of establishing clear goals before starting a business, adapting to the industry's rapid changes, and much more.In This Episode, You Will Learn:Anthony talks about his first steps into the automotive industry (3:10)About how ATI's one-day boot camps helped Anthony (5:10)What kind of advice should you listen to when thinking about growing your auto shop (10:00)From internal customer to auto shop owner (14:40)How to make your auto shop sticky for younger generations (20:50)Takeaways (31:00)Connect with Anthony Wrixon:OC Automotive and DiagnosticLinkedInYouTubeInstagramLet's connect:WebsiteLinkedInFacebookEmail: info@maximumoctane.com Hosted on Acast.
