Podcast #1254: Review - WiiM Amp Multiroom Streaming Amplifier

HDTV and Home Theater Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2026 37:23

In this week's show we do a review of the WiiM Amp Multiroom Streaming Amplifier but first,  we read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Tubi Will Stream The 2026 FIFA World Cup For Free Roku launching new creator-driven content channels, hub Disney+ to join Hulu in streaming top music festivals Streaming Bundles Offsetting Rising Subscription Costs WiiM Amp: Multiroom Streaming Amplifier As you know Ara just completed a set of speakers built from salvaged MDF and brand new components from Dayton Audio. The speakers sound excellent and will end up being a part of Ara's whole home audio system in Tennessee. The only issue is that these speakers are passive and need an amplifier. So to drive them Ara is using the WiiM Amp Streaming amplifier which runs for about $300 at Amazon. This WiiM amp is an all-in-one device that combines a high-quality streamer, ESS Sabre DAC, and Class D amplifier into one cool looking box. It's perfect for "just add speakers" simplicity with great performance, especially at this pricepoint.  Key Features Power Output: 60W  8 ohms DAC: ESS Sabre ES9018 HyperStream, supports up to 24-bit/192kHz hi-res audio Streaming & Connectivity: AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Amazon Music, Qobuz, DLNA, Bluetooth 5.1 (two-way), Wi-Fi, Ethernet Inputs: HDMI ARC (for TV), optical digital, analog RCA line-level, USB-A (for local files/drives) Outputs: Speaker binding posts, subwoofer RCA (with adjustable crossover) Controls: WiiM Home app (iOS/Android), included remote, voice control (Alexa built-in, works with Google/Siri) Other: 10-band graphic EQ + parametric EQ, room correction options, multi-room grouping with other WiiM devices, gapless playback Setup Setup was straightforward and took about ten minutes including the firmware upgrade done through the WiiM Home App. For Ara's setup it was, plug in power and connect the speakers and join the wifi network which was done through the WiiM Home app. Ara is not using a subwoofer but one can be added by using the sub out RCA connection. You can adjust the crossover in the app. The app is where you can select EQ, source, and do your multi-room configuration.  There is only one physical control that controls volume and doubles as play/pause. HDMI ARC makes it an excellent TV audio upgrade with minimal hassle. No complex wiring or external DAC needed. More on that in a bit. Sound Quality The WiiM Amp delivers clean, lively, and detailed sound at a reasonable price. It offers good clarity, solid bass control via the sub out.  Distortion is very low even at high levels of volume. We are not saying that using these with some KEF or SVS Towers is the way to go, but for small-to-medium spaces, or desktop setups, it sounds surprisingly good. Add to it that it can make any speaker work with Apple Airplay or Google Cast Audio and you have a relatively inexpensive way to build out a wireless whole home audio system.  The HDMI ARC support makes this a cost effective way to add a 2.1 speaker system to your TV. In this case the center channel is split evenly between the left and right speakers giving the perception that the audio is coming from the center, provided the speakers are not separated from the TV by a large distance.  We have a listener named John who is using the Wiim Amp Pro ($379 from Amazon with no Airplay support) in this manner with an SVS subwoofer and his quote is, "It's been working perfectly".  The only issue he had was with the EQ calibration. When it was set to cut and boost frequencies he would get audio dropouts. He did some experimenting and found that if he only cuts frequencies and does not boost them, the audio dropouts stopped.   Cool Features That Make It Worth $300 All-in-One Versatility — Streamer + DAC + amp in one small box (about the size of a small Mac mini).  HDMI ARC + Sub Out — Turns any TV into a better-sounding system and easily adds a subwoofer with crossover control. Advanced App EQ & Room Tools — 10-band graphic + parametric EQ plus presets let you fine-tune for your room/speakers. Multi-Room & Ecosystem — Group with other WiiM devices for whole-home audio; excellent service integration (Spotify/Tidal Connect, AirPlay 2, etc.). Other Extras — USB playback, two-way Bluetooth, and voice control,  Summary The WiiM Amp is an outstanding budget streaming amplifier that offers a lot of versatility, ease of use, and surprisingly good sound for the money. It's ideal for anyone wanting a simple, music or TV audio setup without complexity or high cost. While we don't recommend it for big rooms, it's perfect for desktop and bookshelf use, especially if you want to use Airplay 2 or Google Cast Audio. With all that said, Ara will probably never use the app again and simply connect to it via the Airplay 2 from his Mac and iOS devices.

The inheritance and gift tax was abolished back in 2008. A few nuances worth knowing:Real estate transfers — While there's no inheritance tax per se, real estate received through inheritance or gift is subject to a transfer tax, and a land registration fee of 1.1% of market value is also owed by the heir.Gift reporting obligations — Even though gifts aren't taxed, gifts of cash, shares, and similar assets must be declared to the tax authorities if they exceed €50,000 in the case of relatives, or €15,000 in the case of third parties. However, access to the public ÖGK system depends heavily on employment status:If you're employed, you're automatically enrolled through your employer the moment you start working. If you're retired and not working, individuals living permanently in Austria who are not covered by the state health system may get coverage by paying monthly fees, similar to coverage from a private insurance company, with a six-month waiting period. If you're self-employed or a freelancer, you can register with a separate body called the SVS, though these individuals need to pay 20% of the cost of treatment, and healthcare will not be completely free. The visa requirement wrinklePersons from third countries (non-EU) will only get a residence permit for staying more than six months if they can first provide proof of having health insurance covering “all risks.” So you essentially need private insurance before you can even get the visa — and then you can transition to the public system once you're established as a resident.Monthly costsContributions to the public ÖGK amount to approximately 7.65% of gross income, split between the employee and the employer. For those self-insuring voluntarily (not employed), student self-insurance at the ÖGK costs around €63 per month.Private plans for expats run roughly €30–€100 per month, depending on age and coverage.Bottom line for listeners:An American retiree moving to Austria would likely need to start with private health insurance to obtain their visa, then, after establishing legal residency, could potentially transition to the public system — but it's worth consulting an immigration specialist given the complexity.Note:Each section offers practical insights for prospective expats and retirees considering Vienna as their new homePlease always consult a professional tax and immigration attorney before making a move.A note on long-term residency for non-EU citizens: Retiring to Austria as a US citizen is possible but genuinely difficult. The primary pathway is the Settlement Permit (Gainful Employment Excepted), which requires sufficient passive income, comprehensive health insurance, proof of accommodation, and basic German language skills. The catch is that only approximately 300 of these permits are issued nationwide each year, quota places are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis at the start of each calendar year, and immigration attorneys note that securing a spot is rarely possible without legal support. If you are serious about Austria, start the process early in the year and budget for professional immigration help.

237: Why Pathology Vendor's Don't Speak the Same Language?

Digital Pathology Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2026 33:08 Transcription Available

Send us Fan MailWhy are pathology vendors still speaking different image languages when radiology solved that problem decades ago?In this episode of DigiPath Digest #46, I talk through four papers that all point to a bigger issue in digital pathology: we are not only dealing with better algorithms. We are dealing with interoperability, workflow design, explainability, and whether the field is actually ready to use these tools well.I start with DICOM in digital pathology, because I think this is still one of the most important infrastructure questions in the field. Digital pathology has clear value for consultation, image analysis, archival, and workflow, but vendor-specific whole slide image formats still create silos. In the episode, I explain why DICOM matters, why adoption is still low, how the multi-resolution pyramid works, and why this is really about enterprise imaging and future-proofing, not just file conversion. Then I move into kidney transplant rejection, where the paper makes a strong case for multimodal precision diagnostics. Creatinine is late. Antibody testing can miss important biology. Biopsies can miss the area that matters. So the opportunity is not to replace pathology, but to combine biomarkers, biopsy, and machine learning in a way that is more useful than any one signal alone. I also talk about explainability here, because if a model gives a risk score, we need to know what contributed to it. The third paper focuses on perineural invasion in solid tumors, and I liked this one a lot because it shows how AI can help standardize something that is clinically important but still inconsistently detected and reported. Perineural invasion is not just a passive pathway of spread. The biology is more active than that, and the quantification can go far beyond a simple yes-or-no answer. This is a good example of where digital pathology can do something humans cannot realistically do by eye at scale. The last paper is on gastric cancer immunohistochemistry biomarkers and advanced quantification, including HER2, PD-L1, mismatch repair, and CLDN18.2. This section is really about complexity. We are now asking pathologists to visually score biology that is getting harder and harder to summarize consistently, especially when markers, spatial context, and multiplexing all start to matter at once. I make the case that computational pathology is becoming necessary here, not because pathologists are failing, but because the biology is outgrowing purely visual workflows. What ties these four papers together is simple: digital pathology is not only about remote reading anymore. It is about interoperability, quantification, explainable AI, and making pathology more precise in places where the old workflow is reaching its limit. If you are a pathologist, lab leader, or digital pathology trailblazer trying to figure out what actually matters right now, this episode will help you connect the dots.Episode Highlights 07:41 – Why DICOM still matters if we want digital pathology systems to work together. 14:39 – Current adoption of SVS, MRXS, and DICOM, and why DICOM is still lagging. 16:44 – How the DICOM whole slide image pyramid works and why it matters for workflow. 24:29 – Why kidney transplant rejection is still difficult to diagnose with any single marker. 29:18 – Why perineural invasion is clinically important and still inconsistently reported. 34:44 – How AI can quantify tumor-nerve relationships more consistently than visual review alone. 46:39 – Why gastric cancer biomarker scoring is getting too complex for purely visual workflows. 54:55 – Multiplexing, spatial biology, and why explainable AI matters in biomarker interpretation. 01:04:01 – What is really blocking digital pathology adoption: cost, workflow, regulation, or mindset? Resources mentionedDICOM / digital pathology interoperability paper https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42093730/Kidney transplant rejection, biomarkers, and artificial intelligence https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42073482/Perineural invasion in solid tumors with AI and machine learning applications https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42100436/Gastric cancer IHC biomarkers, advanced detection methods, and perspectives https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42075555/Digital Pathology Place https://digitalpathologyplace.comDigital Pathology 101 Free PDF book mentioned at the end of the episode through Digital Pathology Place.Support the showGet the "Digital Pathology 101" FREE E-book and join us!

In this episode, Matt Yocum, an SVS artist and working film sound engineer, explains how modern movie soundtracks are built and why low frequency clarity plays a critical role in shaping the final experience. Drawing on his work across major film and television projects, Yocum discusses how much of what audiences hear is created in post production, how he approaches mixing for the LFE channel using SVS subwoofers, including the SB 4000, and why he often relies on dual subwoofer setups instead of one. MIB Agents OsteoBites
Defining tumor-specific vulnerabilities by mapping oncogenic structural variation in osteosarcoma

Andrew Clugston, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Sweet-Cordero Lab at UCSF joins us on OsteoBites to discuss his OutSmarting Osteosarcoma funded work, in partnership with the RISE Foundation, on defining tumor-specific vulnerabilities by mapping oncogenic structural variation in osteosarcoma. The genomes of osteosarcoma (OS) cancer cells are among the most complex cancer genomes ever observed. Initially formed by hundreds to thousands of incorrectly repaired DNA breaks (structural variants; SVs), OS genomes contain DNA structures that are unique to that patient and tumor cell, combining genes and regulatory features from across the genome in ways that effectively re-wire that cell's gene expression mechanisms. OS cells are also susceptible to further SVs over time and in response to treatment, potentially allowing OS tumors to evolve rapidly. But these complex and tumor-specific genomic structures may also harbor tumor-specific vulnerabilities. By mapping the many unique DNA structures among patient-derived OS tumor cells, Dr. Clugston has attempted to demonstrate that it is possible both to describe the essential structures within these cells and to search them for novel target genes vulnerable to existing drugs and treatment protocols. Using chromatin conformation capture sequencing (HiC) to observe the shape of the genome and optical genome mapping (OGM) to identify tumor-specific DNA structures, Dr. Clugston has produced tumor-specific maps for multiple patient-derived OS tumor cell lines and has begun development of a search process based on long-read mapping techniques that he hopes will inform future patient-specific treatment protocols.Andrew Clugston grew up in the small town of Lake Luzerne, New York. He received a BS in Biochemistry and an MS in Chemistry at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and he received his PhD in Integrative Systems Biology at the University of Pittsburgh. During his PhD he learned to use and develop bioinformatics tools and techniques to study the role of the genome in kidney as well as eye development, and in the process became fascinated with the importance of 3-dimensional organization in regulating cell behavior. Andrew has since joined the Sweet-Cordero laboratory in the Pediatric Oncology Division at the University of California San Francisco as a Postdoctoral Fellow. There, he applies his knowledge and skillset to study how disruptions in these organizational principles allow osteosarcoma cells to develop and proliferate, and how these changes reveal tumor-specific vulnerabilities that can be exploited for fast and effective treatment options that improve the lives of patients.

From JAL to Jazz Kissa: Why Japan Became the Cultural Capital of Audio

Japan has become the world's most in demand travel destination since the pandemic, but beyond cherry blossoms, bullet trains, Lawson runs, anime and those dangerously good 7-Eleven egg salad sandwiches, there's a deeper pull that audiophiles can't ignore. In this episode of the eCoustics podcast, resident Japanophile Eric Pye (@audioloveyyc) and reluctant future convert Mitch Anderson (@blackcircleradio) go all in on Japan's cultural gravity and its quiet takeover of audio: the pilgrimage to e-Earphone, late night jazz kissa listening rooms, Technics heritage, Three Blind Mice pressings, JICO styli, portable travel rigs, flying JAL, record hunting in back alleys, and why Japan still treats music as ritual instead of background noise. This isn't tourism hype it's immersion, listening culture, and what the rest of us may have forgotten.Links for further information:Japanese Jazz Kissa and the Art of the Piano Trio: Exit to Vintage StreetJazz Kissa Culture Goes Global: Exit to Vintage StreetJazz City online store: Purchase Jazz Kissa magazines and booksTokyo Jazz Joints website@jazz_kissa on InstagramThank you to our sponsor SVS & Shure for supporting this episode!https://www.svsound.comhttps://www.shure.comIn the Episode:Eric Pye, Vintage Audio ColumnistMitch Anderson, ProducerCredits:Original intro music by The Arc of All.Voice Over Provided by Todd Harrell of SSP Unlimited.Production by Mitch Anderson, Black Circle Studios.Keep up-to-date with all the latest Hi-Fi, Music, Home Theater, and Headphone news by visiting:https://www.ecoustics.com#hifi #audiophile #vintageaudio #jazzkissa #japanesejazz #vinylcommunity #consumerelectronics #podcast #jico #ecousticsd #blackcircleradio #audioloveyyc #instavinyl #vinylcommunity

Vacuum tubes are supposed to be extinct yet here we are in 2026 still arguing swapping and occasionally getting electrocuted. In this episode Mitch Anderson, Eric Pye, and Jeremy Sikora strip the romance out of valves and talk about why they still matter without leaning on lazy audiophile clichés. The discussion cuts through tube rolling reality versus placebo and the ongoing new production versus NOS debate. It also looks at why Ray Tubes are suddenly on everyone's radar and what Jeremy's amp building class at the American Wireless Communication Museum teaches you that spec sheets never will.Along the way, we connect the dots between Talk Talk's obsessive studio craft, Miles Davis with Jimmy Cobb's unshakable timing, and the Tron soundtrack, while getting very real about tube amp safety; from blown parts to painful zaps, because high voltage does not care how experienced you think you are.Thank you to SVS and Shure for their support of our programming!https://www.svsound.comhttps://www.shure.comCredits:• Original intro music by The Arc of All. https://sourceoflightandpower.bandcamp.com• Voice Over Provided by Todd Harrell of SSP Unlimited. https://sspunlimited.com• Production by Mitch Anderson, Black Circle Studios. https://blackcircleradio.comDon't forget to check our website for daily updates on the latest electronics, news, recommendations, and deals on high-end audio, loudspeakers, earphones, TVs, and more.https://www.ecoustics.com#raytubes #vacuumtubes #audiovalves #vinylcommunity #audioloveyyc #budgetaudiophiler #blackcircleradio #ecoustics #hifi #audiophile #hometheater #listeningroom #musicindustry #analogaudio

In this episode, we explore the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Quality Improvement (QI) Consulting Program, a free member benefit that supports vascular surgeons in designing, executing, and refining QI projects across all stages—from problem identification to dissemination. We're joined by Dr. Samantha Minc, a vascular surgeon and faculty member at Duke University, and Dr. Ashley Vavra, an Associate Professor of Surgery at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and chair of the SVS Quality Improvement Committee. Both bring extensive experience in vascular care and quality-focused clinical practice. Together, they break down how the QI Consulting Program helps clinicians: Develop SMART goals and clear project aims Identify stakeholders and select appropriate methodologies Organize timelines and communication plans Track process measures and assess intervention impact Troubleshoot challenges and prepare presentation or publication materials They also outline what the program does not provide—such as data analysis, formal instruction, or long-term mentorship—to help members understand its intended scope. The application process is straightforward: SVS members may apply during the first two weeks of each month, with up to five projects accepted per cycle. This episode stresses the value of QI in vascular surgery and offers a practical, accessible overview of how the QI Consulting Program can support meaningful improvement efforts in vascular practices.
