On May 30, 2020, The United States launched a manned spacecraft into low-earth orbit for the first time in nine years. SpaceX is now the first private company to launch NASA astronauts into space from US soil. The astronauts are heading to the International Space Station. And how did this happen? With a whole lot of math. As we celebrate this historic flight that could be the next step in human exploration of the Moon and even Mars, we’re highlighting two women whose love of math took them on unexpected journeys of their own. Host Gillian King-Cargile (@gkingcargile) and Kristin Brynteson (@kbrynteson) talk with NASA’s Ryan Prouty. Ryan Prouty is now the Assistant Director for Strategy and Vision at NASA's Johnson Space Center. But for the past 23 years, she was a key team member and then leader of NASA’s International Space Station Program. Then, Gillian talks to S.L. Huang (@sl_huang) whose own love of math took her from MIT to a career as a Hollywood stuntwoman. Huang now shares her
As we continue our celebration of Women's History Month , we welcome Valerie Ryder , a toxicology specialist at NASA's Johnson Space Center. Dr. Jennifer Williams is a member of the United Nations’ Global Goals Educator Task Force, #TeachSDGs. Our students today need to be engaged in authentic experiences that connect them to real people and real problems of our world. Through the sharing of stories and with unified efforts to tackle global issues, students can begin to discover the power they each have in making a difference at local and global levels. The Climate Action Project, connecting students from 64 countries and 250 schools, provides a unique opportunity for classrooms to take ACTION on climate change and to find their role in the United Nations’ Agenda for Sustainable Development. Climate change is an ideal topic for concentration as this issue is not one that sees borders of countries or is focused on any one geographic location---this is a problem for all---which means every single person can be part of a solution. Together as teachers, through experiences such as The Climate Action Project, we can #TeachSDGs and mobilize as world educators to reach the global goals by 2030. The ISS will grow considerably in the next few years with the addition of new solar panel generators and three research labs before being completed in 2010. During his six-month stay, German ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter, a member of the permanent ISS crew since July this year, is devoting 136 hours to research experiments. Another ESA astronaut, Christer Fuglesang, from Sweden, is training at NASA's Johnson Space Center, in Houston. Fuglesang will make his first mission to the Space Station in December after launch on board Space Shuttle mission STS-116. During the twelve-day mission, Fuglesang will contribute to Station assembly by taking part in two spacewalks. The Columbus laboratory is Europe's main contribution to the ISS. ESA German astronaut Hans Schlegel will be on the Space Shuttle mission that will attach Columbus to the ISS. But before the laboratory can be attached, in August 2007 another ESA astronaut, the Italian Paolo Nespoli, will deliver Node-2, an important building block for the further expansion of the Station. Another major European contribution to the ISS is the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), due for launch in December 2007. It will carry 8.5 tonnes of cargo to the ISS, including food, air and water for the crew.ESApod video programme
