In this episode, we sit down with Sergeant Jeff Mathes of the Metro Nashville Police Department—one of the first officers on the scene at The Covenant School on March 27, 2023. Jeff walks us through the sights, sounds, and split-second decisions of that day. He speaks candidly about what it means to be a leader in a crisis—and healing through accepting that there was nothing he could have changed about his actions that day to save more lives. Jeff opens up about returning home that day to his family and the moment he heard a clip of the fire alarm on the radio the next morning that triggered a mental break. Awarded the Medal of Valor and recognized in the Oval Office, Jeff reflects on why the relationships formed through this tragedy mean more than any honor, and the personal truth he's had to embrace: “You can't live your life based on this event that was one day of your life.” Notes: 5:58: How Jeff got into law enforcement/degree at Harding University 42:47: "I need to be able to do the job that I expect my people to do." 45:35: Understanding the gravity of the situation and that his actions will be scrutinized or recognized 1:15:29: Jeff's mindset on the way to the school and preparing himself 1:21:12: The rest of Jeff's day and returning home 1:24:24 The following day having a mental break because a radio ad started with a fire alarm sound 1:29:25: Pushing through mental trauma by accepting that he did his job and couldn't have changed the other outcomes 1:35:10: Jeff awarded the Medal of Valor by President Biden at the White House 1:39:30: "What interests me is the relationships I've formed from this event and the community I serve, not the awards or papers for my desk." 1:40:35: Jeff's advice for others that have gone through similar incidents

Scott is a Fordham University School of Law graduate and currently works as the Director of Legal for North America at KION North America. In this episode, I sit down with Scott, whose path from an Academic All-American cross-country athlete to a law school graduate has been anything but linear. Scott's story is one of resilience, adaptation, and the relentless pursuit of finding his true calling. We kick off at Harding University, where Scott excelled as a track and cross-country athlete while still figuring out what he wanted from life. His next chapter took him to Georgia State University, where he earned an MBA, setting the stage for a career in law that would be anything but ordinary.Scott opens up about his law school years—sharing insights from his internships and clerkships that revealed not just what he wanted to do with his legal career, but more importantly, what he didn't want to do. This clarity would come in handy when his post-law school career at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft hit a major roadblock: the 2008 Financial Crisis. Out of work and navigating mounting financial stress, Scott pivoted, hanging his shingle before eventually landing at McGovern Legal Services—a humbling but pivotal experience. In a candid conversation, Scott shares how those tough times reshaped his outlook and the lessons he learned about thriving in adversity. He dives into what makes a great associate, the importance of taking initiative, and why being proactive is key to career growth. Finally, we bring things full circle to Scott's current role at KION North America, a position that allowed him to return home to South Carolina. Scott's journey offers a wealth of wisdom on mindset, reinvention, and resilience for anyone looking to forge their path—whether in law or beyond.Scott's LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/scottpenickesqBe sure to check out the Official Sponsors for the Lawyers in the Making Podcast:Rhetoric - takes user briefs and motions and compares them against the text of opinions written by judges to identify ways to tailor their arguments to better persuade the judges handling their cases. Imagine you are in a small town, and several industries have moved out of your community. Many of your citizens have lost their jobs. What do you do now? Meet Jon Chadwell, the Executive Director of the Newport Arkansas Economic Development Commission. Jon's community rallied together and formalized a plan to revitalize their community. The community worked together to find industries that were previously present in town. The community invested in infrastructure to make the community more marketable to similar industries. They brought in new industries as well. As a manufacturing community, they shifted to invest in other industries, such as technology, by forming a tech depot. Newport shifted to having enough jobs where people from different communities now commute to Newport for their jobs. Read the Bible with Gospel Lenses. When God says he will bless the entire world through one man. When all cry out for deliverance from Egypt, or Assyria, or Babylon…and God comes to their rescue. When outsiders beg for mercy, and dare to touch the face of God, and they find overwhelming grace and acceptance. The gospel was preached to Abraham. Every section of Scripture—Law, Prophets, Psalms, Gospels, Letters, and Apocalypse—tells of God's relentless rescue mission, reconciling the world in and through the Messiah. In this episode, we return to a series that began in season 2. Hear every book of the Bible retold through the lens of the gospel. The sermon today is titled "The Gospel In Acts." It is the thirty-fourth installment in our "The Gospel In Every Story" Series. Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on September 24, 2023. All lessons fit under one of 5 broad categories: Begin, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. This sermon is filed under Learn: Christian Scripture.Click here if you would like to watch the sermon or get the discussion notes. Footnotes (Sources and References Used In Today's Podcast):· I was inspired to do this series by reading Tim Keller, Center Church. Little did I know he would wind up doing a video series covering the same material at the same time (until his untimely death).· Michael Williams, How To Read The Bible Through The Jesus Lens, served as the first and most basic resource. I used his key texts and hook questions, and often found his short summary of the books to be inspirational.· I am indebted to Dr. Scott Adair of Harding University for his research and help.I'd love to connect with you!Watch sermons and find transcripts at nathanguy.com.Follow along each Sunday through YouTube livestream and find a study guide and even kids notes on the sermon notes page.Follow me @nathanpguy (facebook/instagram/twitter)Subscribe to my email newsletter on substack.

Anita Beshirs was born in Batesville, Mississippi, because the small Southern town her family lived in didn't have a hospital. Welcome to our Valentine's 2024 episode all about Anita and her husband, Lester Raww. In Part 1, we'll get to know Lester and Anita through the stories of their childhood and early adult years. Anita's dad was a Church of Christ minister who, along with her mom, never drank or even took medicinal drugs. Anita is the third child in her family (she has two older brothers) and when she just two years old, their parents moved them to the Cameroon jungle on missionary work. The family lived in Africa in a house made of concrete blocks and with a tin roof. Anita spent the first six years of her life with no TV or radio and so she was forced to make her own fun. She was home schooled by her mom because her dad was busy doing his church work. After four years, the family returned to Mississippi, now in the college town of Oxford, where Anita started grade school. She says she didn't want to go to college right away because she didn't know what she wanted to do with her life. But her parents insisted that she go to Christian college, which meant a school called Harding University in Arkansas. This is where Lester and Anita met, but more on that after we hear the story of Lester's early life. His mom grew up in Florence, Alabama, near the Tennessee River and not far from Muscle Shoals. She moved to Florida and met his dad, who was a fighter pilot in the Navy. Lester has one older brother, born not long before him. Their dad was in and out of Navy and the family moved around, first to San Diego, then back to Flordia, and finally to Virginia, where Lester finished high school. Because his family was also in the Church of Christ and his brother had gone to Harding, Lester chose the school, mostly as a way to escape life in Virginia. He had grown apart from the church when he was 13 and a friend introduced him to things like books by Robert Anton Wilson and William S. Burroughs, marijuana, and prog rock. Lester started playing guitar around this time, but we'll get more into that in Part 2. Anita and Lester remember first meeting in their first year at college in the campus quad. Anita's first impression was, Oh god, this guy is such a freak. They didn't date for another four years, but hung out with a lot of the same people. Then, in her sophomore year, Anita spent a semester abroad in Florence. She came back a changed person. At this point in the conversation, we hear them each describe was they were like as young adults. Anita says she was a bit of a prankster, but Lester's stories take pranks to another level. Because of their respective shenanigans, they were each "dormed" at Harding, which was the school's form of detention punishment. We all share a hearty laugh over this. Anita says that at Harding, it was the first time in her life that she was popular. She was recruited into a social club (their version of Greek sororities) and was a rising star in Christian leadership. She liked it enough, but again, Italy changed her. Slowly, she stopped believing in god and Jesus. Lester shares stories of how they and others would sneak in drinking and smoking cigarettes while at Harding. Slowly, Anita was finding a new identity and crowd of friends, including Lester. She left Harding for Ole Miss but went back because she figured out that she could graduate faster at Harding. The couple really started hanging out regularly in their fourth years of college. Both had dated others and in fact, Anita set Lester up with some of her friends. Lester had never got serious with anyone at Harding, though. It was Anita's goal to get out of Harding unmarried. Her future husband wanted to move to New York to pursue a music career, and she was just ready to live a little, wherever. She broke up with her boyfriend in early 1990 and soon after this, the two got together. Check back next week for Part 2 and the conclusion of our Valentine's 2024 episode. On this episode of Anchored, Jeremy is joined by Michael Williams, president of Harding University. The two dive into Harding's commitment to excellence and commitment to faith, and how those two are intrinsically linked. They also talk about the importance of thinking prudently about the college decision-making process. They wrap up by talking about Harding University graduates and the college's mission of cultivating their God-given horsepower to run toward the brokenness of humanity.
In September 2023, I had the great honor of speaking at the Neller Preachers' Workshop during Harding University's Centennial Lectureship, and today I'm sharing part one of the series of lectures I gave on the book of Colossians. The workshop is named after the late Ken Neller who served as a Professor of New Testament at Harding for many years—I took Greek 3 and 4 with him during the 2006-07 school year. My first lecture, entitled “The Supremacy of Christ,” covers Colossians 1:1-23. In this opening chapter, Paul introduces the major themes the he will develop throughout the letter: Jesus's supremacy over all as the enthroned Messiah, and the importance of the Colossians' growth in the knowledge of Jesus.

Welcome David Stidham to the show today! David serves as the VP of Business Affairs & General Counsel for The Chosen, Inc. Prior to working for The Chosen, he spent nearly 6 years as the General Counsel & Director of Licensing for RightNow Media, as well as 2 years working as an Assistant District Attorney in Dallas, TX. He holds a BBA and MBA from Harding University, a JD from New England Law Boston, and graduate certificate in Negotiation Mastery from the Harvard Business School Online. He and his family live in Denver, CO. David was a delight to interview as we discuss how God prepared him for a dynamic career and calling in using his legal degrees. Raised in the Church, David found faith crucial in all he did and decided. Through stories and examples, David expresses how God led him through pivotal conversations, relationships and opportunities. David talks openly about his trajectory from business law and marketing to negotiating and finally law school. After working as an assistant district attorney, David accepted a role at Right Now Media where he worked negotiating intellectual property. What does it look like for an attorney who follows Jesus to work in the marketplace? David says what keeps him in the race is remaining faithful while making informed decisions. As a leader in his field, David talks about the path to saying yes to varied roles before becoming VP of business and legal counsel for The Chosen. David talks openly about how his past experiences ultimately prepared him for each next step along the way. His leap of faith from district attorney to director of licensing at Right Now Media seemed right for him as he asked the CEO of the company, "How will you use my skills?" Through relationships and an unexpected opportunity, David was offered a contract job at The Chosen. During our candid conversation, David demonstrates how humility covers him in the day to day of his life. Being a part of The Chosen has opened David's eyes to how they are doing things in a different way as a Christian television production company. Using his negotiation skills anew in this role, David admits that working Hollywood is testing his skill set like never before. Are people condescending because The Chosen is a Christian show? How is that communicated to David? What does it feel like to negotiate just to get to the table and convince others you belong there? David calls forth followers of Christ to step into legal roles in various places--even the darker places: court rooms, dark secular places, even Hollywood. Finally, David shares how he keeps his faith alive and building through reading Scripture and prayer. I hope you will enjoy this dynamic conversation with a leader in the legal realm who is listening well to his dreams and how the Spirit of God is leading him. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pamela-havey-lau/message

Guest: Dr. Josh Kirby, Sparrow House Counseling Dr. Kirby graduated with a Master's degree in Psychology from Pepperdine University and completed his PhD from the APA-Accredited Clinical Psychology program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. His dissertation research was conducted through Baylor University Medical Center Women's Psychology Service. Dr. Kirby completed his APA-Accredited clinical internship at the University of Texas at Arlington and Moncrief Cancer Institute in Fort Worth. He also holds a Bachelor's degree in Management from Harding University and a MBA from the University of Mississippi. In addition to his clinical internship, Dr. Kirby has experience providing services to adolescents and adults at Dallas County Juvenile Department, Parkland Hospital, UT Southwestern Psychotherapy Clinic, UT Southwestern Department of Psychiatry, and Pepperdine University's Student Counseling Center. He is available to help individuals address a broad range of concerns including anxiety, depression, academic and career stress, adjustment and grief, men's issues, and spirituality. Additionally, Dr. Kirby has a special interest in helping couples connect, heal, and grow through premarital and marital therapy. Has God ever “slowed you down” so that you can deal with some deeper issues of the heart? To be “in relationship” with people means “attuning” to them - learning to adjust so that you can connect. Same principle applies to our relationship with God. How can we attune our hearts to the things of God? Just pay attention…and then lean in. What to do with unmet expectations? There are “expectations” that we all have in life - some of these are rigid and are more observable, others are more flexible and latent in content. But we all struggle with unmet expectations - when life just doesn't go the way we think or assume it should! In dealing with super high achieving families that are dealing with unmet expectations, Dr. Kirby often has to say, “More is never the answer.” Think about that. As you're looking at these next stages in life, take a moment to “step back” and consider the decisions and their impact in your life. There is a big difference between punishment and discipline. This is important to remember when parenting and when God wants to get your attention!
