Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where this week we tackle one of the more provocative and unexpected Southern dramas of the 2000s: Black Snake Moan. Directed by Craig Brewer (coming off the back of Hustle & Flow), this 2006 film is a steamy, blues-soaked morality tale that's equal parts sweaty melodrama, redemption story, and twisted fairy tale.Set in the heat-hazed Deep South, the film centres around Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson), a recently heartbroken, God-fearing bluesman trying to make sense of his life after his wife leaves him. One morning he discovers Rae (Christina Ricci), a beaten, half-naked young woman, lying unconscious on the roadside outside his home.Rae, it turns out, is in the grip of a destructive form of hypersexuality, fuelled by childhood trauma and exacerbated by the departure of her boyfriend Ronnie (Justin Timberlake), who's been sent off to the military. Convinced that he's been given a sign from God, Lazarus decides to "cure" Rae of her demons—by chaining her to his radiator and keeping her indoors until she's healed.Yes, you read that right. Samuel L. Jackson gives one of his more underrated performances here, dialling down the swagger and leaning into quiet intensity. Christina Ricci is absolutely fearless—vulnerable, unhinged, and magnetic. Together, their dynamic is unpredictable and uncomfortable, but strangely compelling.Black Snake Moan is not one for a casual Friday night with the kids. It's adult in every sense—narratively, thematically, and visually. But for those looking for a film that gets under the skin, challenges moral assumptions, and leans into some serious swampy weirdness, it's worth the plunge. It's also a rare thing: a redemption story that's not afraid to be messy, ambiguous, and morally murky. You might not love it, but you probably won't forget it.Like the blues songs it honours, Black Snake Moan is raw, aching, and full of contradictions. It's about broken people trying to find healing in a world that doesn't offer easy answers. Misunderstood by some, championed by others, it's a film that howls with pain but hums with strange hope.

Perry & Dave, The VMA's are still a thing, why that's bad, How D2C is poised to destroy streaming, The tools that musician's need to get hired (not what you think), What Rick Beato (and others) don't understand about today's "charts". Here's an overview:   ### **Early Days: Accidental Origins (1940s-1950s)** Distortion originally came about as a mistake. In the 1940s and early 1950s, guitarists accidentally discovered that pushing tube amplifiers beyond their normal limits created a gritty, overdriven sound. This was typically caused by damaged speaker cones or malfunctioning amp circuits. Guitarists like Willie Johnson of Howlin' Wolf and bluesmen such as Elmore James and Muddy Waters were among the early users of this overdriven tone, which gave their sound more power and raw emotion.   ### **First Deliberate Use: 1950s-1960s** By the late 1950s, guitarists started to intentionally seek out distorted sounds. Link Wray, known for his 1958 instrumental "Rumble," achieved distortion by poking holes in his amplifier's speaker cone. This gave the song a unique, menacing tone that laid the foundation for rock and roll's aggressive edge.   In 1961, the first commercially available distortion device, the Maestro Fuzz-Tone pedal (FZ-1), was created by Gibson, famously used in The Rolling Stones' 1965 hit "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." This marked a pivotal moment in the history of guitar distortion, as fuzz became a sought-after effect in rock music.   ### **The Rise of Fuzz and Overdrive (1960s-1970s)** The 1960s saw distortion evolve further with the fuzz effect. Artists like Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards popularized fuzz pedals, using them to achieve a thick, saturated tone. Hendrix, especially, made innovative use of distortion in tracks like “Purple Haze,” helping to push the boundaries of what was possible with the electric guitar.   Around the same time, the concept of overdrive became more refined. Instead of extreme fuzz, overdrive pedals like the Ibanez Tube Screamer simulated the natural distortion that tube amps produced when cranked to high volumes. This allowed guitarists to achieve warm, harmonically rich distortion at lower volumes, making it more versatile for different styles of playing.   ### **Heavy Metal and High-Gain Amplifiers (1970s-1980s)** In the 1970s and 1980s, distortion became even heavier as bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and later Metallica pushed the limits of gain. Marshall amplifiers, known for their high-gain tone, became the go-to choice for hard rock and metal bands, allowing for more sustained and aggressive sounds. Guitarists like Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Eddie Van Halen were known for their iconic distorted tones, which relied heavily on both amp overdrive and distortion pedals.   ### **The Modern Era: Digital Distortion (1990s-Present)** In the 1990s, digital technology revolutionized distortion. Digital pedals and multi-effects units began to emulate the classic sounds of tube amps and analog pedals with greater precision. This era also saw the rise of more extreme metal genres that demanded even more distortion and gain, pushing pedal manufacturers to create high-gain stompboxes like the Boss Metal Zone.   Today, digital amplifiers and software (e.g., Line 6 Helix, Kemper Profiling Amp) allow guitarists to access a wide range of distortion tones, from vintage fuzz to modern high-gain sounds, all in one device. Players can easily shape their sound using a combination of analog and digital tools, blending the warmth of traditional   New & Notable: Loudini: The Damn Truth; Love Out Of Luck Mr Pittsburgh: The Warning; Six Feet Deep

Amy Vincent, ASC did not originally set out to become a cinematographer. While studying veterinary medicine at UC Santa Cruz, she got a work study job hanging lights for the theater department. She fell in love with the creative art of lighting, and soon transitioned to the theater arts department. Amy found her natural affinity for math and science matched the skill set needed for technical theater production. She began making short films at UCSC, moving to Los Angeles after college to pursue a career in film. Amy's first job was as an assistant editor, but she really wanted to work in the camera department. So she began working her way up from camera intern to camera assistant, working with notable DPs such as Bill Pope on Clueless and Robert Richardson on Natural Born Killers. A few years into her career as a camera assistant, Amy decided to go to grad school at AFI. She shot many student short films for free before meeting writer and director Kasi Lemmons. Amy could tell from page one that the script for Eve's Bayou was something personal and special. They made the short film together, then over the course of three years, Lemmons raised enough money and interest to turn Eve's Bayou into a feature. It was Amy's first movie as a cinematographer and it became her first big breakout. One of Amy's frequent collaborators was director Craig Brewer. She was given a copy of his first film on VHS, then the two met to discuss making 2005's Hustle & Flow. “I think the beauty of where my collaboration with Craig and the process of making the movie was what the movie was about. The two folded over on each other. I mean, it's the idea of making music or making a movie by whatever means necessary. And there was something that became so apparent in the process. For example, we tried on a whole bunch of different formats, like, what are we going to shoot? At one point we were going to shoot Mini DV, because that's what Craig knew and then we settled into Super 16.” She and Brewer went on to work together on Black Snake Moan and the 2011 Footloose remake. Throughout her career, Amy has enjoyed collaborating with directors on smaller movies. Her most recent project, A Nice Indian Boy, had a very low budget and it had to be shot quickly before the actors strike. “It is so cool to have a really funny rom com that's gay and Indian. It would have been great to have more time and more money to make that movie, but I love all of the things that came together to make this simple little movie. It's really important to me to be able to make a movie that means something to a slightly different community.” Amy recently received the ASC Presidents Award, which recognizes her long career as a cinematographer and a mentor to new cinematographers. She's also an artist in residence at Loyola Marymount University, where she teaches film classes and mentors students making short films. You can see Amy's recent work on the show Parish with Giancarlo Esposito on AMC+. A Nice Indian Boy premiered at the SXSW Film Festival to critical acclaim, and is seeking distribution. It isn't easy to shed a boyband or girl group image.  Over the years, plenty of artists have tried and failed to hit the heights of superstardom that they have seen in a group setting. In many ways; the bigger the group, the more of an uphill battle it is to prove to fans that a solo career is a serious, worthwhile endeavor.   Without re-litigating the entire NSYNC-to-solo-star trajectory of Justin Timberlake, it is important to look back at what was one of the more seamless breakout transitions to solo stardom in pop history, and where Justin Timberlake stood in the pop world in the years leading to SexyBack. In 2002, NSYNC finished up their heralded Celebrity Tour that was praised by critics as a more ‘accessible and down-to-earth' show.  As if specifically crafted to give all of the boys in the group a glow-up, the tour included medleys of the Beatles and the Temptations, and focused on downtempo songs with more musicality to them. The pop hits were still there of course, but the message was certainly that NSYNC had grown up. The tour was short; just under two months long - and they even canceled BOTH Canadian dates in Toronto and Montreal in the run-up, (thanks for that boys) and by April 28th - just in time for fans to say “It's gonna be MAY” - it was all over.  Justin was just getting started though, and began working on his debut album Justified almost immediately. Working with 2000s hitmakers like The Neptunes, Scott Storch, and Timbaland, JT was ready to embrace the R&B sound that NSYNC had been toying with near the end of their run, but never fully committed to. Although Jackson-Inspired Singles “Like I Love You”, “Senorita” and “Rock Your Body” didn't have as much success as the album's most iconic song “Cry Me A River” they certainly were not flops - and Justified went triple platinum in America, double platinum in Canada, and SIX times platinum in the UK. By 2004, Justified was nominated for multiple GRAMMY awards, and beat out Christina Aguilera, George Harrison, Annie Lennonx and Michael McDonald for best pop vocal album.  All of this is to say what is blatantly obvious - Yes, Justin Timberlake was a star, all by himself. Moving on from music as a whole in the years that followed, Justin Timberlake spent the majority of 2004-2006 getting his feet wet in Hollywood, with roles in such films as Edison, Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moan, and Southland Tales. While not exactly undeniable successes, the films did help Justin continue to shed any last remnants of boyband smell on him, and allowed him to reinvent himself as a true polymath - Justin wasn't just a run of the mill every day *singer* - he was a full-fledged *artist*, a tastemaker, and he was ready to bring us into the future - and with him; he was bringing Sexy… back. This is the true story of Justin Timberlake's 2006 return hit 'Sexyback' Also Contains audio from: Pharrell On How Prince & Michael Jackson Both Turned Down His Music. Peep What Songs! Justin Timberlake is an American singer, songwriter, actor, and producer who first rose to fame as one of the lead singers for the legendary pop group *NSYNC before establishing himself as a top-tier solo artist and versatile entertainer. With his smooth vocals, slick dance moves, and dynamic stage presence, Timberlake has become one of pop music's most prolific artists and entertainers over the past two decades. Early Life and *NSYNC Justin Randall Timberlake was born in Memphis, Tennessee on January 31, 1981 to Lynn and Randall Timberlake. He was raised as a Baptist and performed often as a child, showcasing his singing talents at local talent shows and in his church choir. When Timberlake was 11, he made an appearance on the talent competition Star Search, performing country music songs. In 1993, Timberlake was recruited to join the new pop group *NSYNC along with members JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass. The group shot to stardom in the late 1990s during the boy band craze, selling over 56 million records worldwide thanks largely to Timberlake's vocals and stage presence. As the group's popularity skyrocketed, Timberlake's fame expanded beyond music thanks to appearances on shows like Nickelodeon and work as a model. Solo Career – Justified In 2002, Timberlake shocked the music world by announcing he was leaving *NSYNC to pursue a solo music career. Skepticism quickly turned to praise when Timberlake released his debut solo album Justified in November 2002. Fueled by hit singles like “Cry Me a River” and “Rock Your Body,” Justified sold over 7 million copies while showcasing Timberlake's talents as a songwriter, producer, and arranger. At the Grammys, Timberlake was nominated for Album of the Year and cemented his status as pop music's newest superstar. Continued Music Success in the 2000s On the heels of Justified, Timberlake continued achieving massive success across music, film and business in the 2000s decade. His 2006 album FutureSex/LoveSounds debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts and contained hit singles like “SexyBack”, “My Love”, and “What Goes Around...Comes Around.” For his dynamic live performances during the FutureSex/LoveSounds tour, Timberlake won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Music Direction and Technical Direction. Expanding into movies, Timberlake received praise for supporting roles in films like Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moan, and The Social Network. He also began several business ventures, launching clothing lines, co-owning restaurants, golf courses, and eventually investing in a handful of tech startups. After a musical hiatus from 2007-2012, Timberlake came back in vintage form with The 20/20 Experience (2013) and The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 (2013). Together, they became the best-selling albums of the year and contain hit singles like “Suit & Tie” and “Mirrors.” On the back of the 20/20 albums and Experience tour, Timberlake fully re-established himself as an unparalleled force in pop music and live performing. Continued Acting, Super Bowl, Man of the Woods Embracing acting roles with equal passion as his music, Timberlake showcased both his comedic and dramatic talents in films ranging from Friends with Benefits (2011), Trouble with Curve (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and Runner Runner (2013). In early 2018, Timberlake headlined the Super Bowl LII halftime show, marking his triumphant return to the stage of pop music's biggest spectacle 14 years after his controversial performance alongside Janet Jackson. The show featured Timberlake flawlessly singing and dancing through his classic catalog of hits both old and new. With the most-watched musical performance of all-time, the Super Bowl show affirmed Timberlake's status as an immortal pop icon. Later in 2018, Timberlake released his fifth studio album Man on the Woods which debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. Though met with mixed reviews, the album nonetheless contained the hit single “Say Something” and incorporated country and roots influences. The accompanying Man of the Woods tour marked Timberlake's fifth world tour as he continued showcasing unique musical artistry and exceptional live performance abilities to audiences worldwide. Acting Successes and Super Bowl Return Throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s, Timberlake expanded his acting catalog by starring in films ranging from light-hearted comedies like Trolls (2016), to lead dramatic roles in Palmer (2021). His vocal performances in multiple Trolls movie soundtracks generated smash hits like “CAN'T STOP THE FEELING!” that firmly merged Timberlake's musical talents with his blossoming acting abilities. In early 2022, Timberlake again seized the global spotlight when he co-headlined the Super Bowl LVI halftime show alongside Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. The hip-hop and R&B-centric performance marked Timberlake's third Super Bowl appearance, solidifying his unique status as a halftime show mainstay performer. Legacy With over 88 million records sold worldwide, an arm-length list of awards, dozens of smash singles, and universal acclaim for electric live performances, Justin Timberlake has firmly established himself as pop royalty over his multi-decade career. By seamlessly crossing over between music and film for two decades, Timberlake has become one of entertainment's most decorated and versatile stars. His influence across pop, R&B, hip-hop, and acting is nearly unmatched by any male entertainer of his generation. From leading the pop explosion of 1990s boy bands to dominating the charts as a renowned solo artist, Justin Timberlake has consistently reinvented himself at the cutting edge of entertainment for twenty-plus years. With his smooth voice, slick moves, unmatched stage charisma and diverse talents ranging from singing to acting, Timberlake delivers a level of popstar power matched only by luminaries like Michael Jackson and Prince. Though still actively recording music and starring in films at just 42 years old, Timberlake's vast career ensures enduring fame as one of history's preeminent entertainers. "Everything is in a cycle, and the cycle is dictated by the audience's needs and wants, the studio's needs and wants in terms of the financial bottom line, right? Those two very evolving organisms are always trying to sync into the right gear. So, I don't worry anymore because it always comes back around. You're in this long enough, you just go, all right, this is a cycle, it'll come back around."  Stephanie Allain Stephanie Allain of Homegrown Pictures, is a prolific film and television producer dedicated to creating content by and about women and people of color with authentic stories, depictions, and representation. She began her career in the mid-80s as a reader at the elite talent agency, CAA, a job that required reading scripts and books submitted to the agency and providing coverage of the material, often the first barrier for further consideration and development.  In her next position at Columbia Pictures, as one of only two African-American readers,  a young USC student found his way to her under the guise of interest in a job. Instead that student, John Singleton, pitched her Boyz in the Hood and the rest, as they say, is history. Stephanie worked with John Singleton on five movies: Boyz N the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993), Higher Learning (1995), Hustle & Flow (2005) and Black Snake Moan (2006). She also produced Something New, Peeples, Beyond The Lights, Dear White People, French Dirty, Burning Sands, Juanita and Really Love. Her work has been nominated for numerous awards with wins from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Film Independent Spirit Awards, NAACP and others. A few of her projects currently in production include her first documentary Untitled Billy Preston, and a limited series for HBO, Sula by Toni Morrison. Amid a brilliant career, Stephanie became the first black woman to co-produce the Academy Awards (2020) and made history again by becoming the first woman of color to be named as President of the Producer's Guild of America (2022). In this episode, Bill & Amanda discuss a hypothetical scenario where one of them gets infected with a fungus that turns them evil and dangerous to be around. The conversation quickly turns to the question of what the other person would do in this situation, and they debate whether they would kill the infected person or not.But it gets even wilder, folks. They start talking about this movie called Black Snake Moan, where a man ties a woman to a radiator, and hot that could be a possible solution until a cure is found. That's some MacGyver-level thinking right there. The conversation then shifts to DoorDash and how they don't seem to care about their customers' orders and the quality of the food they deliver.Overall, this episode is a lighthearted and humorous conversation that touches on various topics, from hypothetical scenarios to the pitfalls of food delivery services. We welcomed him back with his choice of a round-table film discussion. No interviews....just the “terrible trio”. He picked a film by director Craig Brewer, whose earlier film Hustle and Flow is part of See Hear lore (don't try looking the episode up, it ain't there). If you look at the poster art you will get the impression you're about to watch a sleazy tribute to early 70s grindhouse cinema. The truth is a little more complex than that. We advise you not to rage against the perception of what it is, but to absorb what it REALLY is...let us be your guides. Samuel L Jackson plays an ex-blues guitarist whose life is broken. He discovers a battered Christina Ricci outside his farm – she's also someone whose life is broken. Bobby Rush started playing with Delta blues guitarists Boyd Gilmore and Elmore James in Arkansas during the early '50s before migrating to Chicago. Bobby's “Sock Boo Ga Loo” on the tiny Starville label was picked up by Chess Records in 1967, propelling the singer into the big leagues of R&B. BOBBY RUSH BIO In 1971, Bobby broke through on the national charts with the lowdown funk grinder “Chicken Heads” for Galaxy Records. “That was the first big record I ever had,” notes Rush. The song has since been featured in the film Black Snake Moan, HBO's Ballers, and more. Calvin Carter, the producer of “Chicken Heads,” put out Rush's '72 followup “Gotta Be Funky” on his own On Top logo and then sold Bobby's contract to Stan Lewis' Jewel Records in Shreveport, La. Lewis issued several Rush singles before Bobby made the major label leap in 1974 with “Get Out of Here” for Warner Bros. The sparkling album Rush Hour for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff 's Philadelphia International empire should have made Bobby a huge star in 1979 but didn't receive its proper praise until the 2000s, when Rolling Stone recognized it as one of the best blues albums of the '70s. An encore LP was summarily shelved, and before long Rush moved back south to Jackson, Mississippi, where his legion of fans eagerly embraced him. The lascivious “Sue” didn't chart for him in 1983 on the LaJam imprint, but it blasted out of countless ghetto jukeboxes and sold over a million records. His reputation for spectacular live performances growing exponentially as he did a minimum of 200 shows a year. His mainstream recognition campaign commenced when he earned his first Grammy nomination for his 2000 album Hoochie Man, followed by an appearance in the Martin Scorsese-produced 2003 PBS docu-series The Blues with his own segment in the episode The Road to Memphis. To date Bobby has earned 12 Blues Music Awards and 48 nominations, including the prestigious B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award and Album of the Year. Rush co-starred in the 2014 documentary Take Me to the River alongside Terrence Howard, Snoop Dogg, and Mavis Staples. That same year, Bobby joined Dan Aykroyd on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon to perform two songs, marking his first late-night television appearance. In 2019 the feature film Dolemite Is My Name about Rudy Ray Moore making cult classic film Dolemite, was released in select theaters and on Netflix, starring Eddie Murphy, Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key and with a cameo by Bobby Rush.
