Amy Anderson is a Pilates Instructor, Certified Dance Medicine Specialist, founder and owner of Engage Movement Arts, and former professional ballet dancer, whose career took a dramatic turn when a devastating back injury left her unable to dance for two years. She was just 27 years old and at the peak of her career when she was told that her injury was career ending and that she would never be able to dance again.        Not only did Amy dance again, but she also created a 30 year-long career working in private practice rehabilitating injuries for both dancers and the general public, while also maintaining a professional dance career part time. She is currently working with clients, teaching adult ballet classes, and creating new works to share with the world.      Amy shares how she fell in love with ballet when she was just 3 years old after watching a performance of Swan Lake on PBS. From that moment on, she knew that she wanted to be a professional ballet dancer, starting her training when she was 9 years old. Her dream eventually came true when she was hired by a large professional ballet company in the Pacific Northwest.    Unfortunately, although Amy achieved her life's dream, the pressure of dancing in such a large company was overwhelming. She felt like she was nothing more than a body in a costume instead of an artist. Not only did she feel like she was losing her identity, the obsessive, irrational, and constant focus on weight made her begin to worry about developing an eating disorder. She chose her health over her career, quit dancing, and walked away from her dream.        Eventually, she came back to ballet, secured a position in a smaller local company with a supportive, nurturing atmosphere and no pressure. Until she was injured.     Amy shares many of the important life lessons and insights she gained from her injury and her subsequent journey of healing, which also led her to discover a new career path while also finding her path back to dance. She also shares the importance of listening to your body, finding the right path to healing that works for you, and how to pay attention to the signals that your body is sending you.   She also shares how (and why) she has embraced the power of aging well, and firmly believes that all of us can do anything we want to, at any age, and that there is always a path to healing.   Download this positive, inspirational, and engaging episode to hear Amy's story, how to age well, dance for joy, and discover our own power to heal.   https://www.engagemovementarts.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-anderson-56670918/ https://voyagedenver.com/interview/exploring-life-business-amy-anderson-engage-movement-arts/ https://www.denverdancecenter.com/

No matter your age, there are benefits that you can get from practicing pilates and it can be customized to what it is you are needing. The intensity can be increased or decreased based on where a person is with their strength and individual needs. ● [36:49] Pilates is like the glue for everything else. It's the glue for everyday life, for the activities you want to do just to have fun, a way to excel and stay fit in the sports you are playing, manage stress, and more. It helps people physically and mentally. QUOTES: [6:03] “I'd torn the meniscus in my knee, I had hamstring injuries, back pain, all the dancer stuff, and I started to heal my own body from doing Pilates, and then went oh my goodness, this system is amazing. If I can heal myself, I can help others.” - Kate Boyle[14:00] “I'll get athletes that are wanting to cross train and really expand in their sport. Golf is a great example, it's all one sided, rotational to one side. So when we build up the strength and stabilization to the other side, they get more power, a better swing, and really excel in their game.” - Kate Boyle[14:53] “Even people where their mobility isn't as great anymore, and it might be as simple as trying to reach up to that top cupboard is getting really hard because they're getting really stiff through their shoulder, we can really work on that shoulder range and strength, so just everyday movements become easier.” - Kate Boyle[30:50] “You are learning how to move while being present with your body. So many other exercises we do, we'll jump up a treadmill, stick the headphones on or turn the TV on and start walking and running away and we're thinking about the shopping we've got to do and the kids we've got to pick up. In Pilates you can't do that because then you'll lose your breath or what your movement's doing, how many reps you've done, so it means for your workout, you actually have to be present in your body.” - Kate Boyle[32:25] “I think that's a different sort of mindset as well, so many other modalities were like no, no, no, you've got to do your 10 or your 20 and you've got to push through. Whereas Pilates is very much no, no, no, your body is telling you this is just too hard. Right now, we're going to start gripping the opposite muscles that shouldn't be activating, so we're going to hold our breath to get through, we're going to brace those abs. So rather than doing that, where we're not getting any benefits, take a short five second rest and then continue if you can.” - Kate Boyle "You can strengthen your body in a way that's both supportive and restorative." - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESMind Movement Health WebsiteMind Movement Health FacebookMind Movement Health InstagramMind Movement Health LinkedInMind Movement Health YouTubeMind Movement Health Podcast GUEST BIO:Passionate about holistic health and great movement, Kate runs her online movement and health platform, Mind Movement Health. Welcome to Real Work, Real Life where I talk to real people about what they do for work and what that means for their lives. Today I'm talking with Beth Sandlin, a Pilates Instructor, and the founder of Trifecta Pilates. After years of working as an in person instructor, Beth started Trifecta to expand the reach and accessibility of Pilates, offering teacher training and online Pilates workouts (long before that became so normalized during the pandemic) available through membership, an app, and YouTube and trauma informed. We talk a lot about the ins and outs of a career in movement as well as the challenges and joys of starting a small business while still working full time, and even get into the details on different income streams, and so much more.If you enjoyed this episode, you might also like my interview with Jenna J, a personal trainer, which you can find here: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/personal-trainer/id1673653251?i=1000641161798You can find out more about Beth here: Website: https://trifectapilates.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/trifectapilatesYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/trifectapilatesIf you like the show, please rate and review on iTunes and Spotify  (linked below) and please share with a friend! Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! I'm so excited about today's episode. Today we're talking about how to live a healthy, balanced life when you have both kids and a demanding career. I wanted to do this episode because I know that so many of you are in a similar situation as me where you're trying to figure out how to be the best mom you can be while also balancing a career and doing all of the things…like laundry and finding pockets of rest. There's also women listening who desire to have kids in the future, but you're trying to figure out the logistics and asking yourself questions like, “How am I going to find and afford childcare?” or “Is it possible to work and to be a mom?” These are really great questions and my guest for today's episode is going to help answer them!  Today, we've invited my friend, Robin Long, back onto the podcast. Robin is a Pilates Instructor, Founder and CEO of Lindywell, mom of four kids under the age of 9, and most recently added author to her long list of achievements! Robin is someone I've followed and admired for years. She has incredible wisdom to share about balancing work life and being a mom because she's been doing it herself for the last several years! She even has twins like me! Friends, I hope this episode is a reminder that you're not alone in this journey and there's people in your corner cheering you on as you go! On today's episode, I'm chatting with Paige Lindgren, a Certified Hormone Specialist and Pilates Instructor who is passionate about helping women feel their best and find balance, hormone health optimization, and healthy lifestyle choices. Paige also co-founded From Force to Flow, a cycle syncing platform that's full of hormone knowledge and tips for each phase of the menstrual cycle. Together we discuss the different phases of the menstrual cycle & optimization for each one, hormone imbalances and conditions (PCOS, Hashimotos, etc.) and how to test for them/manage symptoms, the impact that cortisol has on feeling safe in our bodies, why getting more protein is so important, long-term effects of blue light exposure, social media & screentime breaks, healthy sleep patterns, the difference between a healthy and dysfunctional thyroid, why over-exercising can cause more harm than good, managing environmental stress, natural vs. hormonal birth control options, exposure to elevated amounts of BPAs and microplastics, honoring cravings during menstruation, and so much more! I love how Paige presents these findings in a way that's both approachable and easy to understand, while creating a safe space for women with shared experiences to discuss their journeys.
