This week, we're taking a look at the Twilight Zone episode "Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room." For Jackie Rhoades, nothing comes easy. Ever since he was a young boy, he has had to prove himself. However, instead of these difficult moments fashioning him into a strong, independent person, it has simply reduced him to a lacky--an individual who only finds purpose through someone else's eyes. In this case, that someone else just happens to be a no-good criminal by the name of George. In this KOI episode, we're going to dive deeper into the psychology behind the man in the mirror; we'll try and uncover how George is able to keep Jackie under his thumb; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, a personal story about my own run-in with some bullies. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have not seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. We're walking through Rod Serling's class Twilight Zone series and asking difficult questions about life. So, if you love The Twilight Zone, science fiction, or even just philosophizing about life, consider joining us on this journey. There's always room for more. TVC 669.1: Part 2 of a conversation that began on our last program with Emmy Award-winning writer, producer, director, and author Joseph Dougherty (thirtysomething, Pretty Little Liars, A Screenwriters Companion: Instruction, Opinion, Encouragement). Joe's latest book, Rod Serling at 100: One Writer's Acknowledgment, takes a deep dive into the legacy of the Emmy Award-winning writer/producer, with a particular focus on Serling as a writer, and what Serling's body of work continues to mean to Joe personally. Topics this segment include Serling's apparent affection for Julius Moomer, the effervescent yet talentless television writer who served as Serling's protagonist in the famous Twilight Zone episode “The Bard” (and who had previously appeared as a minor character in Serling's live television drama The Velvet Alley); the similarities in structure between the Twilight Zone episode “Nervous Man in a Four-Dollar Man” and “Last Night of the Jockey”; and the contentious television interviews that Serling gave to Mike Wallace and Dick Cavett in 1959 and 1972, respectively. Rod Serling at 100 is available from Fayetteville Mafia Press.

The episode follows Mr. Jackie Rhoades, a timid and easily frightened small-time criminal, who finds himself holed up in a shabby hotel room after committing a theft. Rhoades is haunted by his own insecurities and lack of self-confidence. Looking at himself in the room's grimy mirror, he suddenly sees a different version of himself – a tough, fearless persona who taunts him about his cowardice. The mirror version of Rhoades pressures him to confront his fears and take control of his life. The internal struggle between his timid self and his newly empowered alter ego drives the narrative. Ultimately, Rhoades must decide whether to continue being a nervous man or embrace the confidence he desperately desires. This week is all about trans roles in media, and trans stories... also in media (that's where stories go, I don't make the rules). Look, I know we promised that today we'd be unleashing our Mega-Franklins that awarded the best and worst episodes for the entire run of the series, but we needed a little more time to make it the greatest podcast in recorded history. Instead, we decided to give you this fun bonus episode. After recording The Franklins for the fifth season, I kept the mics rolling as I surprised Jeff Cork with a pop quiz. I read off the title for all 156 episodes of The Twilight Zone to test how well we remember this show that we've devoted so much time to studying and debating. You can listen to the podcast below or subscribe to us on iTunes. Stay tuned next week for our ultimate awards show, it'll be fun. I hope this episode serves as a nice reminder of some episodes you might have forgotten.
