There's a phenomena that happens a lot in the trans and queer community that's hard to define, but when you're so used to having to fight for every single little thing you deserve, it's too easy to sometimes go too far and end up hurting people. Let's go through some examples and talk about how to spot it and why we need to stop it. The 4400 and Clean Slate writer Shomari Kirkwood returns to discuss the joy of building yourself. In response to the “trainer wars” between the balanced and force-free communities Sarah and past podcast guest (and friend) Lisa Mullinax sit down to talk about the place where ethics meet efficacy. Lisa and Sarah do not claim a label as trainers (neither balanced nor force-free), and have both undergone an evolution in the behavior field that has helped them to arrive at a place free of dogma and full of compassion. Know the opinions expressed here are vulnerable and honest, and there can't be enough time for all nuance to be present in all conversations. In this episode we are going to be working through Luke 4:14-30, looking at the beginning of Jesus' ministry and His subsequent rejection in His hometown. Together we discuss the disparity that can sometimes exist between what our expectations are, and the truth of who Jesus is, and how He operates and calls us to operate as well. In Jesus' upside down kingdom, Jesus sought to care for anyone and everyone, to be for everyone, and has called us to do the same.
The past can be difficult for those of us who transition as adults, so much so this is our fifth episode exploring it. But sometimes something surprises you, and gives you a little piece of the childhood you missed. Has Wheaton College, the flagship of evangelical higher ed, gone woke? Concerned parents and alumni have published a letter accusing the school of valuing diversity more than discipleship. Others have responded by defending Wheaton against the unfounded claims of the MAGA mob. What does the controversy reveal about the state of evangelicalism in the U.S.? A new piece by friend of the show, Karen Swallow Prior, explores the relationship between justice and mercy. Does emphasizing one value more than the other explain the rift in the American church? Derwin Gray is back to discuss his new book, “Lit Up With Love.” He explains how evangelism fits into the bigger narrative of the Bible, and how our reconciliation with God impacts our reconciliation with others. Also this week—North Dakota officially rejects the kingship of Jesus. Just like Morpheus told Neo "Like all other S&C coaches, you were born into bondage, born inside a prison that you cannot smell, taste, or touch. A prison for your mind. Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself. This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your office and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."Ok he didn't say EXACTLY that - but you get the point. There are S&C coaches saying only SL squat. Greg answers questions about whether the A-theory vs. B-theory of time is a false dichotomy, why Jesus had to suffer before dying for our sin, gender dysphoria, and how we know we haven't simply deluded ourselves into thinking we have good evidence for our faith. Topics: Is the A-theory vs. B-theory of time a false dichotomy when it comes to God and his nature? (04:00) If death was the penalty for sin, why did Jesus have to suffer before dying for our sin? What's the biblical basis for suffering for sin? (20:00) Toleration of gender dysphoria doesn't make sense on three different grounds. Struggling with my own journey of same-sex attraction, I once believed that my persistent desires meant God must be okay with it. In this episode of Calibrate Conversations, we unpack the story of a woman who arrived at a similar conclusion after years of prayer and self-reflection. We delve into the challenging yet liberating truth that God's promises aren't about removing our struggles but rather empowering us to surrender and live in obedience. Through personal anecdotes and scriptural references, we explore how daily surrender, community, confession, and accountability are vital parts of the discipleship process, leading to genuine transformation and a life of peace with Christ. We also address the psychological toll of concealing one's sexuality and the freedom that comes with living authentically within a Christian community. The weight of others' opinions can be crushing, but anchoring our identity in Christ brings unparalleled relief. Furthermore, we tackle the controversial topic of conversion therapy, separating harmful misconceptions from the true journey of spiritual growth. By examining the choices we do have in living a life aligned with faith, we emphasize the importance of building a compassionate, grace-filled community where authenticity and support can truly thrive.Join us weekly as we strive help people embrace God's standard for sexuality! Support Bionic Planet: https://www.patreon.com/bionicplanet Recent updates from the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) have pushed an old debate into public awareness, highlighting a perceived divide between emissions reductions and carbon removals. While SBTi's new guidelines focus on cutting emissions directly within company operations, some argue this creates a false dichotomy, downplaying the essential role of carbon removals in achieving net-zero goals. In reality, both strategies—reductions and removals—are not opposing forces but complementary tools needed to combat climate change effectively. In Episode 69 of Bionic Planet, I spoke with Eli Mitchell-Larsen, a self-described "carbon removal evangelist," who provides valuable insights into the various types of carbon removal methods, including nature-based, hybrid, and engineered solutions. I'm rerunning this episode here today as episode 111. The discussion begins with a focus on the importance of both reducing emissions now and removing existing gases from the atmosphere to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The host and guest emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach that includes a mix of nature-based solutions, such as afforestation and soil carbon sequestration, as well as engineered technologies like direct air capture. Throughout the episode, the host and guest explore the different categories of carbon removal, including biomass carbon removal and storage, geological storage, and unconventional methods like kelp farming. They highlight the importance of understanding the capture, utilization, and storage of carbon in evaluating the effectiveness and durability of each method. The conversation also touches on the evolving landscape of carbon removal technologies, with a focus on the need for continued research and development, government support, and deployment incentives to scale up promising solutions. The host and guest stress the urgency of accelerating the deployment of carbon removal strategies to address the escalating climate crisis. Overall, the episode provides a comprehensive overview of the complexities and challenges of carbon removal and reduction efforts, emphasizing the need for a multifaceted approach to combatting climate change effectively. Through engaging dialogue and expert insights, listeners gain a deeper understanding of the critical role of nature-based and engineered solutions in achieving a sustainable future. The fallacy of the False Dichotomy frequently occurs in debates about Christology and the Trinity. This fallacy is defined as an argument that offers only two extreme choices, while simultaneously ignoring any other reasonable alternatives. This week's episode explores how the false dichotomy fallacy appears in modern culture before examining its common appearances in christological debates. Finally, we discuss various tips to help avoid falling prey to committing false dichotomies. Recorded live at VISIONS Summit: NYC 2024, join Paul Canetti as he sits down with Reggie James and Ruby Thelot. We explore the concept of being "too online" and whether the dichotomy between digital and physical worlds is still relevant. Ruby and Reggie share their thoughts on the cultural shifts driven by our online presence, the importance of physical spaces, and the impact of digital status-seeking on our everyday lives. Listen now! From Avatars to AI Key takeaways:The line between digital and physical worlds is increasingly blurred. While there's a fascination with the physical realm, the digital world offers unparalleled opportunities for status and connection. The pursuit of online status can drive people to act differently in the physical world, often using public spaces as stages for digital content creation. As technology evolves, so do our cultural norms. The value of images and digital content is changing, prompting a re-evaluation of what we consider real or trustworthy.Looking ahead, there's potential for more personalized, artisanal digital experiences. This shift might move us away from mass-produced technology toward bespoke digital solutions. The future of software and digital experiences may lie in highly personalized, artisanal creations rather than scaled, mass-market solutions.[00:02:30] Reggie James: "We tend to hit these just accelerated, you know, Internet superhighway vibes mentally, and then you step outside and you realize, actually, the pace of this environment is significantly slower."[00:03:30] Ruby Thelot: "There is certainly this fascination that we now have for the physical realm. As soon as we're allowed to go online, suddenly we're like, oh, no, wait. It's gotta be analog or it's gotta be we wanna go back to the physical."[00:05:30] Reggie James: "Utilizing public space as a playground for digital status creates this weird, just using up of this previously shared social resource."[00:09:00] Ruby Thelot: "Once we are able to generate images that have the semblance of reality, the value socially of images erodes. We can think of it even in a judiciary context where we start to question the veracity of the images that are presented."[00:27:00] Paul Canetti: "It might be that when it's all said and done, there was this 50-ish year period of humanity where we spent a lot of effort creating these kinds of interfaces and these new ways to accomplish things. And then in the end, we'll come back to something that looks a lot like it did pre-computer.”Associated Links:Links & Resources:Ruby Thelot's new book on design and beauty theoryNathan Jurgenson's essay "The IRL Fetish"Eugene Wei's insights on online status optimizationMartin Guerre (movie) featuring Gérard DepardieuMaggie Appleton's discussions on home-cooked softwareWilliam Morris and the Arts and Crafts MovementCheck out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? Heather Creekmore and special guest Erin Todd delve into an expression we've heard a lot in Christian circles: "Turn to Jesus Not Food." We've all been there. It's late, you've had a hard day. And what you really want it brownies, or cookies, or the ice cream. Maybe you bake or maybe you drive to the store. You give in. You eat the thing that you had hoped you wouldn't. It's like the craving took over. And, now you feel guilt, shame, and worse: You wonder if you've sinned by turning to food not Jesus. You believe you should have just prayed the craving away or handled the emotional need in a way that did not include food. Today Heather and Erin unpack this expression. They talk about whether or not our physical food cravings are sinful. They discuss how eating can and does help a stressed or tired body calm down, but how this doesn't have to be the only tool in the tool belt. Erin and Heather also talk about the importance of really listening to our bodies so that we can nourish them appropriately. We don't always have to "give in" to the cravings, but neither do we have to over-spiritualize them. Few debates within gun culture draw more ire and passion than whether a person should or should not open carry in public. The arguments back and forth, tribal and otherwise, rarely produce the satisfaction of solid victory, but why? In this episode we look at the rhetoric and logic behind two of the loudest arguments, one for each side, and see where they match up. This sets the stage for how Gun Control arguments rarely dispatch the catharsis of victory, instead winding off until the next opportunistic event precipitates a frightfully echoing "conversation." Can leaders truly balance the drive for high performance with the human need for purpose and connection in the workplace? This week I'm talking with Nick Hobson, a PhD and Managing Director of North America for Influence at Work. We delve into the intricacies of behavioral science and its practical applications in the workplace. It's a discussion on the evolution of work and the human desire for purpose, autonomy, and collaboration, a deep dive into understanding human behavior and motivation. A key theme is the research and science behind paradoxical leadership, balancing people and performance, and the necessity of self-awareness and reflection for leaders. This puts to bed the false dichotomy between focusing on people or performance, advocating for a both-and approach to leadership. Our conversation also touches on the research-backed benefits of diverse and inclusive teams, the power of pausing to gain perspective, and the potential of experimentation within organizations. This conversation will be valuable for any leader seeking to navigate the complexities of the modern workforce balancing both satisfaction and productivity. What does Gun Control and Christian Nationalism have in common? Particularly, the rhetoric against them. While bad arguments of a similar fashion do not make a justification for either, they do help illustrate the way rhetoric functions. If not already, Christians should be prepared to face the horns of this dilemma: either chose to be condemned as a Christian Nationalist, or be gouged on the horn of an inevitably failed proposal, and be labeled as a hypocrite. We are called to be in the world, but not of it. In the same way, the right to self defense is not dependent on choosing the lesser of two evils. On this episode, come explore the sometimes tumultuous, and often divisive subject of dog training. Learn more about some of the labels like "positive reinforcement" and "balanced" training, and ways we can show kindness and respect to both people and dogs, regardless of what side of the fence you find yourself on. We hope you enjoy learning a little more about our training history and where we are now, in our training journeys with our dogs. We know this can be a tricky subject. We hope that you find our "just think about it and get curious" approach to be a less intimidating, and a kinder way to start thinking about the subject and address the human end of the leash. So what the heck is the false dichotomy? It's opposing options that are presented as the ONLY options, it permeates absolutely every part of our society, and it harms all of us, even cis people. But don't buy into it! Life doesn't fit into neat little boxes, nor should it. Library Girl Mina Martinez Oldham joins us again, and we also discuss the importance of being seen and how playing is part of experimenting... and also cute non-binary librarians, culinary cruelty, and how trans women go where no man has gone before. I'm curious whether any of your opinions on Biblical or Christian history going from a more rare or fringe view toward a more mainstream or conservative one? Is it not a False Dichotomy to say that the only two possibilities are Inerrant Divine Revelation and Atheism? I'm wondering when and how the change as to understanding the nature of authority, authorship, and inspiration of the Bible came to be. If Revelation has actual grammatical mistakes, how do most Bible translations account for those? Does two power theology legitimize the trinity as somehow Jewish? Or is two power theology a distinct theological concept which is incompatible with the trinity? Is there any basis for believing Jesus is the angel of the lord?
