Happy Thanksgiving As is the custom here on the Deadpod, this Thanksgiving we feature an acoustic set and I think we are especially fortunate this year as this set is one of the very best such sets from 1970. From September 20, 1970 this set from the Fillmore East features both David Grisman and David Nelson on mandolin for much of the set, including a very unusual 'Big Railroad Blues' and an acoustic 'Truckin'. Jerry is in particular fine voice throughout, especially on 'To Lay Me Down'.  If you are a fan of acoustic Dead this is a set to savor  .. I hope you enjoy..      Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 9/20/1970 - Sunday One   Uncle John's Band [6:47] Deep Elem Blues [5:51] Friend Of The Devil [3:32] Big Railroad Blues [3:14] Dark Hollow [2:56] Ripple [4:20] To Lay Me Down [5:12] Truckin' [5:35][0:12] Rosalie McFall [2:24] Cumberland Blues [5:04] New Speedway Boogie [9:31] Brokedown Palace [5:13]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112824.mp3    I have far more to be thankful for than I can express here.. first of all to all of you who reached out with your well wishes and concern during my recent surgery and recovery.. to my doctors and nurses who did such a wonderful job helping to get me back home.. and of course to my beautiful wife without which I never would have been able to see this through...

This week's Deadpod is a short but very sweet show from June 7, 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. This week's first set is 'relatively' acoustic, that is the first two songs are acoustic, but Jerry uses an electric guitar and Weir acoustic on the remainder of the som et. Frdeadlists.com:  " David Nelson plays mandolin on Cold Jordan and Swing Low, and he and Marmaduke contribute backup vocals. Before Cumberland Blues Garcia says "we're gonna do a few semi-electric numbers. We've got a million new labels." There is a short cut at 2:48 of Cumberland. Marmaduke adds backup vocals to Me And My Uncle." This was a birthday request from a great friend of the Deadpod - happy (early) birthday Steve!   Grateful Dead Fillmore West San Francisco, CA 6/7/1970 - Sunday     One    Intro [0:11]   Don't Ease Me In [3:03] [0:20]   Silver Threads And Golden Needle [3:32] Friend Of The Devil [3:38] [0:33]   Candyman [5:44] [0:44]   Cold Jordan [2:11] [0:59]   Swing Low Sweet Chariot [3:00] [2:24]   Cumberland Blues [4:#12] [1:02]   Me And My Uncle [3:07] [0:30]   New Speedway Boogie [8:57] [0:16]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061722.mp3  thanks so much for your kind support !

Let's have ourselves a natural ball. We've done shows whose themes include traditional covers done by The Grateful Dead as well as paying tribute to the songwriting talents of Robert Hunter. We're truckin' down one more alley of dead themes in today's show: covers of Grateful Dead songs done by others. And what a lineup we have for you this bright Saturday morning, celebrating springtime in Sonoma County. We've got Jorma, Jimmy Buffet, Graham Parker, Joan Osborne, Levon Helm and Bruce Hornsby queued up for you as we celebrate the return of the FM signal for Community Radio in West Sonoma County. That's right! The rest of the world gets to share Sonoma County with….uh, Sonoma County, as the streaming returns to sharing the stage on a Community Radio signal that runs 24×7. Deeper Roots will celebrate with a New Speedway Boogie, honoring the new FM signal and raising a glass or Ripple with Uncle John's Band. Tune us in.

This week on the Deadpod we feature a Kentucky Derby Day performance by the band back in 1991. This was at Cal Expo, in Sacramento California on May 4, 1991.  The band starts out hard and tight with a roaring 'Hell In a Bucket'. They are without Hornsby here, and in some ways sound tighter and more together (although I'm well aware that opinions differ on how Vince sounds here). The 'Sugaree' that follows is very good, with Garcia really ramping it up in the solo.  I think that the version of 'The Race Is On' here is a real winner. 'Row Jimmy' is always fun to hear and they also feature 'New Speedway Boogie' which they broke out during the Spring tour that year.   Grateful Dead Cal Expo Amphitheater Sacramento, CA  5/4/91 - Saturday One     Hell In A Bucket ; Sugaree ; New Minglewood Blues ; Loser ; The Race Is On ; Row Jimmy ; When I Paint My Masterpiece ; New Speedway Boogie ; The Music Never Stopped  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod043021.mp3  Hoping you have a fine Derby weekend, and a fine May to follow!  thanks for your support

I'm joined by guest Phil Stacey as we discuss the Grateful Dead's 1970 album Workingman's Dead. Show notes: - Recorded at CompCon world HQ - First show of the new year - Workingman's Dead is the band's 4th studio album - First of two releases in '70 - Recorded in nine days - Stripped down sound, less psychedelic - Garcia and Robert Hunter wrote the whole album - Folk, country, Americana elements - Rock was moving away from psychedelia, toward singer-songwriters and acoustic sounds - Bookended by two of the band's biggest songs - More of an emphasis on vocals like Crosby, Stills and Nash - "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" as a torture device - Phil: Prefer live Dead, but still break out the studio albums on occasion - Warm sounding record - "New Speedway Boogie" is about Altamont - Recently covered by Courtney Barnett - Hunter's solo releases are all over the place - Jay: Only heard two songs before - Fairly concise album; not much jamming - Moved away from acid blues into a new direction - "Easy Wind," sung by Pigpen, was the outlier - Like the Entwistle song on a Who album - "Casey Jones" evolved in an interesting way over the years - Talking about cocaine - Next up: American Beauty Completely Conspicuous is available through the iTunes podcast directory. Subscribe and write a review! The opening and closing theme of Completely Conspicuous is "Theme to Big F'in Pants" by Jay Breitling. Voiceover work is courtesy of James Gralian.

Merry Christmas .. Happy Hanukkah   This year's holiday edition of the Deadpod features one of the best acoustic performances of 1970. This takes place at the Fillmore East in New York City on September 20th, 1970. The acoustic set, which we present today, is not only a fine performance but also a fine recording. David Grisman plays mandolin on 'Friend of the Devil' and David Nelson joins with another mandolin on a slow soulful,  'Big Railroad Blues', both continue through Ripple. There is some speculation that Jerry plays piano on 'To Lay Me Down', clearly a wonderful highlight here. Nelson and Grisman are back with mandolins on a fine  Rosalie McFall, following a rare acoustic 'Truckin'. I love  'Cumberland Blues' here.. but then again I usually love this song.. Jerry plays an electic during 'New Speedway' but the vibe is very acoustic. 'Brokedown Palace' provides a fitting conclusion to the set..   Following, I decided to feature one more cut from Holly Bowling's beautiful work 'Better Left Unsung'.. this is 'Eyes of the World (Louieville KY 61874).. it speaks for itself..       Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 9/20/70 - Sunday   One - 1:02:46   Intro [0:03] ; Uncle John's Band [6:47] % Deep Elem Blues [5:51] % Friend Of The Devil [3:32] % Big Railroad Blues [3:14] % Dark Hollow [2:56] % Ripple [4:20] % To Lay Me Down [5:12] % Truckin' [5:35]%[0:12] ; Rosalie McFall [2:24] % Cumberland Blues [5:04] % New Speedway Boogie [9:31] % Brokedown Palace [5:13]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122316.mp3   My most sincere hope that all of my friends here have a very healthy and happy Holiday...   thanks for your support...........   the professor

Hard to believe its been 18 years since we lost Jerry...and since this week's Deadpod falls on that sad anniversary I felt that this week's show should commemorate that loss perhaps more than most do. One thing that unites us all as Deadheads is the fact that we all feel that loss.. I decided to bring you a show from the summer of 1995, not to depress you or to point out how far Jerry had slipped by then (although it can't be denied) but becuase it still contains huge moments of genius and insight into who he was and who we are and were. This one comes from the Shoreline Ampitheater on June 2nd, 1995. I'm only going to play the second set, for that contains some truly amazing moments (as well as a few sad ones)... but there was still some of that magic there that has kept us together all these years. This second set starts out with a fine version of New Speedway Boogie, a great opener.. then Jerry goes into his cover of  McCartney's 'That Would Be Something' and this is a fine version of that. Way To Go Home and Saint of Circumstance follow.. then the band goes into 'He's Gone'.. not one of Jerry's finest versions as his playing is a bit aimless to say the least.  As the band goes into Drums however one of those magical moments that could only happen at at Dead show took place as the Dali Lama's own choir, the Gyuto Monks, appeared to chant for the crowd. After the Monks finish, the band does a pretty interesting space, then Weir leads them out with 'Easy Answers'. What follows is for me the highlight of this set, one of the better versions of  'Standing on the Moon' that you will hear... Jerry seems to really pour out his soul on this one.. and how better to remember him today than in listening to those lines from this song...  The boys close the second set as they did so often with Chuck Berry's Around and Around, but return for a fun 'Lucy In The Skies With Diamonds' encore..  Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mt. View, CA (Friday 6/2/95) set 2 New Speedway Boogie That Would Be Something Way to go Home Saint of Circumstance He's Gone -> Drums -> Chanting by the Gyuto Monks -> Space -> Easy Answers Standing on the Moon Around & Around E: Lucy in the Sky You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080913.mp3 The Music has Never Stopped, indeed.. thank  you all for your support that has enabled me to continue this project for so many years, and I hope, for many to come.....  I think back to the many times I was at a show and just stopped and looked around and wondered at the magic I was in the presence of, and know that that magic is what has kept the Deadpod going for so long too.. thanks my sisters and brothers!

Listening Booth: 2010 Putting a new twist on "the classics" is suddenly chic and popular. Just ask musician Marc Cohn whose new recording, "Listening Booth: 1970" -- a collection of songs from that year -- is a hit on Billboard. Who would've thought re-creating 40-year-old songs like "Wild World" from Cat Stevens, The Grateful Dead's "New Speedway Boogie" or "Make It With You" by Bread of all groups would raise a winner, yet it did. But maybe given what's been going on in Dearborn recently we shouldn't be so surprised. After all, who would've thought even just two years ago that re-creating "classics" like Fiesta, Taurus and Explorer would be returning Ford to its past sales glory, but it is. Of course it's much more than just a couple of new cars that's making the difference, but, as any of the Ford team will tell you, having fresh, quality product doesn't hurt. To understand what's driving Ford back to the top of the industry, this week Autoline takes a turn in its own "Listening Booth", as the company's Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Lewis Booth joins John McElroy for the first of two shows. Joining John and Mr. Booth on the panel are Bill Vlasic from the New York Times and former chief of Car & Driver magazine Csaba Csere.
