Two great music writers - James Kaplan and Paul Alexander - join Joe for a War of the Words. Joe gets excited and takes a deep dive into both of their brilliant books, which are both about America in the 40s and 50s, both about the jazz music scene, but follow very different subjects. 'Three Shades Of Blue' by James Kaplan is biography of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans - and how those three extraordinary musicians made one of the greatest jazz albums of all time: Kind Of Blue. 'Bitter Crop' by Paul Alexander is a biography of the great Billie Holiday, but told through the last year of her life - 1959 - which coincidently is when Kind Of Blue came out. Both books are brimming with great stories and accounts from the time - they are meticulously researched - snd Joe asks both authors how immersed they get in their subjects when writing. They also give us some brilliant book recommendations as well! THE BOOK OFF 'In Cold Blood' by Truman Capote VS'Last Train To Memphis' by Peter Guralnick We hope you enjoy the chat - which we've kept a little long - which may well inspire you to put on some jazz after listening!? :-)Oooooh and get this! For a limited time, you can get £100 off off any HD light and free UK delivery. Seven musicians, two recordings, five songs: musical magic. This week marks the 65th anniversary of “Kind of Blue,” the iconic album recorded and performed by a young group of talented rising stars – John Coltrane, Julian “Cannonball” Adderly, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and Wynton Kelly – before they were jazz legends, all under the leadership of the visionary trumpeter Miles Davis. “Kind of Blue” remains a treasured classic recording and is still selling copies, still taught in music classrooms, still covered by jazz musicians and still deconstructed by cultural critics. So why has Kind of Blue endured as the top classic jazz album for 65 years? We speak with three jazz experts to learn more about the revolutionary album.

In a world with lots of content noise, play to the silences. Let your messaging be simple and clear, and even short. In this episode, we're learning from the musician who let there be simplicity and space. Who played his trumpet in a sparse style so that each note was beautiful and carefully chosen. That's Miles Davis. And with our special guest, Ben Lempert, Director of Content & Web at Heap, we're talking about creating simple messaging, capturing different voices, leaving room for spontaneity, and the importance of feeling in your marketing.About our guest, Ben LempertBen Lempert is Director of Content & Web at Heap. He has been there for over 4 years, having joined in August 2019 as Head of Corporate Marketing. During his time in his current role, Ben has built a Thought Leadership Content Hub to curate all of Heap's content and facilitate the stages of the buyer's journey, created the Heap Digital Insights Report, which generated thousands of leads and a 50% increase in content downloads, created the Digital Experience Insights Report series, which generated 6000+ downloads and bylines in Forbes and VentureBeat, developed creative initiatives including the Heap Comic Book and the Heap Explainer video series,  grew SEO traffic from 0 to 29,000+ visitors/month, increased social media followers by 100% over three successive years, and grew PR SOV 25% QoQ for nine successive quarters. He has over 10 years of experience in content strategy, brand, comms, creative, editing, and leadership. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Kind of Blue:Create simple messaging. Distill your message into plain but pointed language directed at your particular audience. Ben says, “What people respond to in Kind of Blue, and I think what people often respond to best in good content, is a simple, clear, open, direct message. I think a lot of companies get very complex in talking about the nuances of their solution and the technical advantages their product offers. I think it's worth it in the content world for most companies to think about what your fundamental message is, whether that's one sentence or one paragraph or four words. What's the thing that people will respond to that explains what you do and why it matters in a unique way? It's very hard to get to. I don't think many companies do it well. It's very easy to come up with something that's too abstract to be meaningful.”Capture different voices. Feature quotes from both your customers and colleagues in your content. Gather info and input from all of them and work it into your content. You don't have to operate all alone on a marketing island. Ben says, “Jazz, like content, is a team activity. I think one of the great things about Kind of Blue is that there's room for lots of individual voices. When we think about representing our company through our content, it's worth recognizing that there are plenty of voices across the company. And they all have different ways of expressing what's important. So it's okay to vary the voice and story you're telling, as long as you have a fundamental story that is simple and clear. What's on top of it involves orchestrating these different voices in a way that hits people in different ways and allows for nuance and complexity to be added to your story.”Leave room for spontaneity. Yes, get your work done. But then leave a little time to experiment and play. Ben says, “We are all extraordinarily busy. But sometimes the best marketing comes from carving out time for free form group thinking. Brainstorming, coming up with ideas that are new and off the wall, having that be a prompt.”Mood and feeling matter. Instead of getting into the nitty gritty technical details, focus on how you make the customer feel. Ben says, “Kind of Blue has that impact on you because of the way it sounds. You're not listening to every single note and you're not listening to Coltrane saying, ‘Oh, he played a flat 13 there. Whoa, that's wild!' It impacted you on a deeper, more emotional level. And we often forget that as content writers, that our audience are not robotic automatons. They're people. And we want to hit their emotions. That's where you reach people.” So ask yourself, “How do I want to make my audience feel?”Quotes*”[Kind of Blue] is one of the very few jazz records that most people who are not jazz fans own and listen to actively. And I think there are lots of reasons for that. And I think that gives us a pretty interesting lens for thinking about how content works, given that lots of content is directed towards people who may not be aware of the intricacies of your technical solutions, but still want to be compelled by what you have to say and want to be interested in it.” - Ben Lempert*”Miles was famous for having a very sparse style, very much interested in playing space. And for him, he was very actively thinking about how to play the silence and the space between notes as much as he was playing the actual notes. So he was super minimalist, would play one or two notes, but they would be absolutely beautiful and absolutely brilliant and took a sort of courage to play those one or two notes that very few musicians have. It's much easier to play a lot of notes and hope you get something right. It's much harder to have that one pithy statement and let it hang there.” - Ben Lempert*”Always strive to create a simple, communicable foundation that ideally everyone in the company can embody. And when the audience receives it, they understand right away. And then you build complexity on top of that.” - Ben LempertTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Ben Lempert, Director of Content & Web at Heap[4:37] Ben Lempert's Journey from Jazz Musician to Director of Content[8:47] The Making of Kind of Blue: A Revolutionary Jazz Album[10:20] Miles Davis' Vision and the Birth of Modal Jazz[23:59] Kind of Blue's Legacy and Impact on Jazz and Beyond[28:24] Exploring the Creative Process and Expectations[29:51] The Power of Minimalism in Music and Marketing[33:44] Improvisation: Jazz Lessons for Conversational and Creative Skills[36:12] Marketing Wisdom from Jazz: Simplicity, Emotion, and Spontaneity[48:38] Heap's Content Strategy: Blending Business Goals with Creative Storytelling[55:12] Embracing Experimentation and Spontaneity in Content CreationLinksListen to Kind of BlueConnect with Ben on LinkedInLearn more about HeapAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company.

Состав квартета уже знакомый и похож на предыдущий альбом More Than Anothe Day, который я обозревал. © 2023 Lisa Hilton & Ruby Slippers Productions Igmar Thomas - trumpet Luques Curtis - bass Rudy Royston - drums Lisa Hilton - piano СЛУШАТЬ АЛЬБОМ - https://album.link/i/1706162632 ПРЕДЫДУЩИЙ АЛЬБОМ - https://t.me/discor/5921 Лучший трек альбома в плей-листе JAZZ по-русски 7 на AppleMusic и Spotify Поставь лайк ❤️ и подпишись на канал JAZZ по-русски https://t.me/discor #lounge --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message

Miles Davis had finally ventured out of his drug den for an interview with Julie Coryell, which leads to an unexpected turn of events. Unexpected, especially to Miles himself.  The unique combination of embarrassment, shame, and having literally run out of drugs on that night eventually led to Miles sobering up. But not before he almost drugged himself to sleep for good. When Miles begins again, he tries to start new, and lead a simple life, but new challenges emerge when he is made to face his inner demons. Michael Tau had spent years obsessed by the extremes of musical expression. “Extreme Music: Silence to Noise and Everything In Between” is the culmination of decades of research into the sounds (and silences) that comprise the outer limits and conceptual expressions that stretch the definition of music. Tau defines and categorizes these recorded sounds into sections that allow fans and newcomers to explore the fascinating world of musicians who defy convention. He explores a wide range of extremes including volume, speed, and vulgarity to packaging, recording methods, unplayable media, outdated technologies, and digital pioneers. He asks and answers the questions: Are all sounds music? Is silence music? Does a plate of rotting food once cataloged, packaged and sold by a distributor qualify as music?“Extreme Music” includes over 100 interviews with makers and musicians as Tau uses his background in psychiatry to help readers understand what motivates people to create and listen to non-mainstream music. As a fan of multiple avant-garde musical genres, Tau uncovers the pleasures (and sometimes pain and frustration) found at the outré fringes of music.“Extreme Music” is the ideal guide for curious seekers, die-hard fans, and cultural investigators. Michael Tau was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. As a teenager, he was introduced to bizarre and adventurous music via the after-hours CBC radio program, Brave New Waves, which he recorded onto cassette to listen to the next day. In university, he attended noise shows in lofts in Montreal's quasi-industrial districts, to the detriment of his hearing. He has since written for numerous underground music publications and has authored several music zines. When he isn't listening to the Merzbow boxset, he works as a physician.Purchase a copy of “Extreme Music: From Silence to Noise and Everything In Between” through Feral House: https://feralhouse.com/extreme-music/Listen to a playlist of some the music discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0pTeMurVDluqaY0txFEPF0?si=de95b551eb3d4ebbMusic Not Available Through Spotify Playlist:Jem Finer's “Longplayer”: https://longplayer.org/ or www.trinitybuoywharf.com/whats-on/longplayer8-Bit Tribute to Miles Davis' ‘Kind Of Blue' called ‘Kind Of Bloop' by Andy Baio: https://kindofbloop.comVulfpeck's ‘Sleepify' album: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTE2UdbmDw4Hantasi ‘Vacant Places': www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qut4OjmBS0 Visit Michael Tau's website: https://anomalyindex.com/The Booked On Rock Website: https://www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/bookedonrockpodcastSupport Your Local Bookstore! When it comes to jazz, great musicianship is the standard. But there's a bright line between virtuosity, power, and technical complexity, and the slow, modal, atmospheric lyricism of beloved artists like pianist BILL EVANS and trumpeter MILES DAVIS, on his classic album KIND OF BLUE. Quiet. Subtle. Spacious. It's not about how many notes you play, but how beautifully you play them. As one musician says, it's about "loving every note." On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, lyrical, atmospheric European jazz from the German ECM label, on a program called SPACEJAZZ 9: RESTRAINED. Music is by the TORD GUSTAVSEN TRIO, the SOKRATIS SINOPOULOS QUARTET, the MATS EILERSEN TRIO, GIOVANNI GUIDI, ELENI KARAINDROU, and DOMINIC MILLER. Bora, lá, vamos falar de "Blue/Joni Mitchell/1971".Músicas A case of You CaliforniaRiverAll I WantThe LastTtime I Saw RichardBlueCareyProdução: Baioque ConteúdoRoteiro e apresentação: Pedro SchwarczDireção: Newman CostaEdição: Felipe CaldoRedação: Luiz Fujita e Paulo BorgiaArte: Juliana BarbosaSegue a gente lá no insta: @umpaposobresom Produção: Baioque ConteúdoRoteiro e apresentação: Pedro SchwarczDireção: Newman CostaEdição: Felipe CaldoRedação: Luiz Fujita e Paulo BorgiaArte: CRIO.LAH

May 26th is the birthday anniversary of Miles Dewey Davis, the legendary trumpeter and bandleader and Jazz Unlimited with Paul Anthony will celebrate with a special show devoted to his music. We will highlight a few albums which are considered Milestone albums in the jazz world including work from his two great quintets, his collaboration with Gil Evans on Birth of the Cool which ushered in the advent of the cool jazz movement. We'll also listen to his groundbreaking albums which led to Miles immersion into electronic fusion music on In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew and, of course, no survey, would be complete without a cut from in my estimation the greatest album ever recorded…KIND OF BLUE.
