The Week in Westminster

Sonia Sodha of The Observer assesses the latest developments at Westminster. This week the Prime Minister kickstarted a mission to remake the state which he describes as "overstretched" and "flabby". He started by announcing he would abolish the arms-length body, NHS England. But there was ongoing disquiet in the Labour party about possible cuts to welfare spending which could be coming down the track. Sonia discusses all of this with former Conservative minister, Lord Willetts, who now chairs the Resolution Foundation, and Claire Ainsley, former director of policy for Keir Starmer. After a week of intense diplomatic manoeuvring, could a ceasefire in Ukraine be on the horizon? Sonia brings together Bronwen Maddox, director of the foreign policy think tank Chatham House, and Johnny Mercer, former Conservative MP and Minister for Veterans, who has just returned from a trip to Ukraine.Splits within Reform UK deepened this week following the party's suspension of one of its five MPs, Rupert Lowe, after allegations of bullying and threatening violence. Professor Jane Green of Oxford University analyses whether the ongoing row will halt Reform's surge in support. And, MPs who like to use TikTok are regularly flouting parliamentary rules on filming videos for social media. So do the rules need to change? Former Deputy Speaker, Nigel Evans, and Daily Mail political sketchwriter, Quentin Letts, discuss whether it's really a good idea.

A firm's value is, ultimately, defined by the clientele. Establishing and effectively communicating that value, in a marketplace that is increasingly crowded, is a foremost challenge for boutique practices right now. On this episode of The Boutique Lawyer Show, host Jerome Doraisamy is joined by Aptum Legal managing director Nigel Evans to discuss his views on the importance of communicating a firm's value, the danger of deprioritising value amidst all other business duties and responsibilities, the practical steps to extrapolate value and how frequently such evaluations should occur. The pair also talk about the need for creativity in showcasing a firm's value, striking the right balance in communicating via modern platforms versus more traditional approaches, to what extent a firm should learn from their competitors, how much should be invested in defining one's value and why retaining a firm's is one of the most important things a business owner can do. The son of a woman who died aged 100 in a troubled Lower Hutt rest home says its systemic problems accelerated her decline. The Woburn Masonic Care home in the Hutt's wealthiest suburb is having its management overhauled amid an official investigation into five complaints of abuse and neglect. The Hutt Valley District Health Board has intervened eight months after it was alerted by the Health and Disability Commissioner. Last month the Masonic Villages Trust said it was going to close the 57 bed home and rebuild it. Nigel Evans' mother had a couple of falls at the home where she'd lived for several years, and died two years ago. He told Phil Pennington he is not blaming the nurses and carers - saying they've been let down too.  [audio_play] The Masonic Villages Trust  declined to comment on this case or Nigel Evans's claims, as did the Hutt Valley DHB The trust says it is working with the DHB to to ensure standards of care are met.

A litigation firm with a value pricing model that was created to be a great place to work? They do exist and prosper and this week it was our great pleasure to interview Nigel Evans, Co-Founder of Aptum Legal one of Australia's leading firms that have moved beyond the billables model. Nigel started Aptum with his fellow co-founders at the start of 2018 and has already had tremendous success growing the practice. The firm are experts in a range of litigation with a particular strength in Insolvency, Bankruptcy, Tax and Corporate disputes. We had a very in depth discussion around value pricing, scoping and different approaches to billing which Aptum Legal has embraced wholeheartedly. In their own words: "What we know to be certain is the traditional way of providing legal services is failing. In commercial litigation in particular, it is failing to provide high-quality service that delivers commercial outcomes. The traditional way rewards inefficiency, stifles creativity and innovation, focusses on process over outcomes and alienates even the most sophisticated clients." Nigel came to law having already had a professional background and we discussed how he managed to juggle a young family with a big career pivot and how his prior experience has helped him while in practice and at the bar. Nigel has worked for large international firms, as a Barrister and now running his own practice so has a great depth of understanding to how law firms can be run effectively. If you're interested in different fee models, how contentious practices can approach value pricing, and how to grow a firm that lives its values then this is a great episode for you. https://www.aptumlegal.com.au/

Britain’s Got Talent is back…..now I KNOW it is very popular (which shows the mentality of the masses)…but WHY subject us to idiots who are happy to ridicule themselves on national TV?...and WHY Ant and Dec?....heaven knows we’ve seen enough of them over the last six months…can’t see the point of them on this show….and WHY the same old format with talentless “judges” playing God and the same old sob stories from the contestants which have NOTHING to do with their act…….bring back Opportunity Knocks I say…at least we were looking at genuine contestants. Great to see Nigel Evans fighting back…the guy was dragged through court … was TOTALLY cleared of any offences…and ended up 130 grand out of pocket….he is starting to kick up a fuss and good on him….he says the CPS should reimburse the cases they lose….and so say all of us !!!! Taking kids out of school in term time is back in the news…asking whether there should be some exeptions…eg Police and servicemen. The consensus seems to be that it should be one rule for all…the problem lies in the rise in price of holidays when the schools are off….if parents want their kids educating they can’t have it all ways. I have been watching Wills and Kate in Australia with their new nipper….I must say that Kate is a lovely girl and very photogenic and I think she is doing a great job out there….When she was talking to an old serviceman she held his hand which I thought was really nice and she was great with all the kids who came out to see her…..nice example. I wish the BBC would get someone in the news department who give us SOMETHING of interest on their bulletins…I am sick and tired of the OscarPistorious case taking up so much time with NOTHING happening….we really are NOT interested in this country…all we need to know is the result….as I have always said…there is too much time given to the news…two half hour bulletins a day would do. The Crown Prosecution Service has come under fire for wasting time and money on cases that should never have been brought to court…e.g. the Nigel Evans case…he was cleared of all charges when the WITNESSES said he hadn’t done anything wrong…they ruin a blokes life, put him through hell…then come out with some lame excuse….the boss of the CPS (woman) saying that 87% of cases they take end in prosecution…OH so that’s O.K. then…let’s not worry about the lives ruined, the money it’s cost and the false accusers getting away scott free….celebrity witch hunts or what? And finally there was a chap on tele explaining how he had accosted a couple of burglars stealing stuff from his goods yard….he approached them and one of them picked up a plank and attacked him…he managed to take the plank off him and “defended” himself leaving the burglar in a right mess…although he deserved congratulating he was arrested and taken to court for unnecessary GBH….HOWEVER the case lasted 20 minutes before rightly being dismissed….the legal system in this country needs shaking up…I think those in control are from another planet. Not to mention some guy in JAIL who got knocked about by another prisoner being awarded DAMAGES….I give up !!!
