How LineVision is Boosting Transmission Grid Capacity Without New Power Lines

My Climate Journey

Hudson Gilmer is the co-founder and CEO of LineVision. LineVision is a Series C-stage startup helping utilities monitor and increase the capacity of the vast network of transmission lines that serve as the vascular system of the U.S. electric grid. The U.S. transmission grid spans 600,000 to 700,000 circuit miles of high-voltage lines, connecting energy generation with consumption and delivering power across the country. This infrastructure typically lasts for decades, yet much of it was built before the advent of sophisticated software-based monitoring or persistent connectivity.LineVision provides a non-contact sensor and software system that detects issues with transmission lines and enables grid operators to safely increase their capacity—critical in an increasingly electrified world where grid constraints limit power delivery and building new transmission lines is a slow, multi-year process. We explore all this and more in our conversation with Hudson. In this episode, we cover: [2:06] An overview of transmission as one of the backbones of infrastructure in the US[7:00] LineVision's focus on high-voltage, long distance lines [8:53] Hudon's background and LineVision's origin story[12:41] LineVision's customers and who they work with[14:33] An overview of LineVision's product [19:31] How seasonality plays into transmission capacity [22:53] The lifespan of typical transmission lines [25:10] The future of transmission line monitoring [28:11] LineVision's funding to date [31:05] How LineVision's business could be applied in the future[33:30] How monitoring facilitated grid security[35:42] LineVision's  new customersEpisode recorded on Jan 30, 2025 (Published on Feb 13, 2025) Enjoyed this episode? Written in Stone: Climbing’s Most Important Ascents

In 1998, Alex and Thomas Huber climbed the first ascent of Freerider on El Capitan in just over 15 hours. Their climb ushered in a new era of big wall free climbing, and there's no question it was a hugely important moment in climbing history.  But the way we credit it, most often simply to Alex Huber, ignores the rich history of the route.  The Huber's pioneered about 1/30th of the climbing. The vast majority of the route was established over many years by a who's who of Yosemite and free climbing history. Robbins, Frost, Pratt, Long, Bachar, Hudon, Jones, Glowacz, Skinner, Piana, Schneider, and MORE.  Put simply, Freerider is a linkup. A brilliant linkup, but a linkup nonetheless. And we just can't talk about it without going back. Way back. Back into time. Check out more here!

This episode lands just before Equinox with the intention to share gentle guidance and Taoist wisdom as we transition from summer to autumn, from the outer to inner, yang to yin and the Element of Metal.  We are delighted to welcome back Colin Hudon, herbalist, acupuncturist, practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and founder of our beloved brand Living Tea for a cosmic dialogue on this powerful time of year. Autumn is the season of contraction, surrender, and release. The focus shifts inwards and when navigated consciously, this season can nurture immense personal growth. Today we cover a rich spectrum of topics, from planetary consciousness as it relates to earth's cycles to our relationship to grief, attachment, the layers of seasonality,  how man and woman hold the potential to embody the microcosm of the macrocosm, natural bio-tech, and of course, how to support our systems through the seasonal shift with diet, meditation, mindfulness and tea.   Thank you Colin, for being our celestial tea conduit and for showing us how to embrace the seasons of our lives with renewed grace and awareness. “If you rely on you're eyes only, you're gonna miss a lot,” says Donna Hudon who, at age six was wearing glasses and at eleven she was using a cane at night. And by age twenty-three this guest was totally blind. Nights and days, she now has issues with her circadian rhythms like some other blind people (known as non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder), impacting the sleep-wake cycle which makes night shifts doable for her. This week on Outlook we're speaking with Donna, a personal care worker from Nanaimo, British Columbia, out there on Vancouver Island. She's one of only a handful of blind people around doing personal care work and advocating, simply by doing this work, for more to follow in her footsteps. Growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, we discuss the role Hudon's sisters played, in the early years of Donna's blindness, to get their mother to treat Donna like any other child and the influence this had on the trajectory of Donna's life. She's wanted to work taking care of others and children with disabilities of all kinds for a long time. Even with a rehabilitation practitioner diploma and a degree in child and youth care, Donna still had to push to get hired anywhere because employers wouldn't look beyond the blindness. In the end, however, a little word like “no” never did slow this woman down. And now the Nanaimo Association for Community Living, where she works, is creating policies in their procedure manual: how to have somebody with a disability work to being an independent worker. As she shares with us about her life looking for jobs, raising and homeschooling two children of her own, along with volunteering and being an active member out in her community, Donna shows why it's important for those of us with disabilities to be tenacious in carving out a space for ourselves - in employment like in the rest of life. And speaking of night shifts: Donna was just coming off of one of those, a twelve hour shift, to be with us this week, but after facing breast cancer a few years ago, not to mention all the discrimination she's been up against when trying to contribute to her community and to the broader society all these years, she also likes to get away from all of that sometimes. So we finish off the show hearing about her favourite pastime…her kayak out on the ocean and being on a competitive cancer survivors dragon boat team because nothing slows Donna Hudon down for very long. For more info on her work experiences, check out this article: "Blazing New Trails Takes Persistence: My Job as a Personal Support Worker" from the November 2019 issue of The Blind Canadian: https://www.cfb.ca/november-2019-version-of-the-blind-canadian?id=2

In this episode, recorded April 23rd, Alex begins by discussing the Crunch's Calder Cup playoff picture (all she has to go on are the clinching scenarios, but those are certainly promising). She discusses how special this season has become for the fans, and enthuses about how much things have changed for Syracuse over the past few weeks. Alex covers the ever-shifting landscape of the AHL's North Division, and takes a look at the schedules of three teams around Syracuse in the standings: Laval, Belleville, and Toronto, who ironically are going to be playing each several times during the final week of the season. Alex makes a bold prediction that Syracuse's playoff seeding will come down to their last game of the season, a home contest against Laval. Alex then runs down some stats for the team. She covers the usual suspects like Gabriel Dumont, Alex Barre-Boulet, Charles Hudon, and Max Lagace, but also looks how Syracuse's players are doing against the rest of the league. She takes a look at how the special teams are going, a stat bolstered by recent power play success: the Crunch had four power play goals in two games over the weekend thanks to Dumont, Hudon, Riley Nash, and Anthony Richard. She ends with a look at how defensive prospect Nick Perbix is fitting in with the team and how he has contributed to the Crunch's recent success. Give it a listen today! In his 1890 seminal book, The Principles of Psychology, William James wrote, “There is no more miserable human being than one in whom nothing is habitual but indecision.” One such key form of indecision is procrastination; and research shows that procrastinators act as if there's no future. There is a way however, to rein in the reckless disregard for the future-self by evoking the empathic connection between the present and future-self. On this episode, psychologist and expert on imagination and wellbeing, coach at Impact Hub Ottawa, and owner of Bevy Creative, Eve-Marie Blouin-Hudon, Ph.D. discusses how we can and should help people change their connection to their future-self which has multitude of benefits including reduction in procrastination.
