Nima and Michelle discuss letting go of THINGS from past relationships. Storytellers: Joe Quint (www.chooseyourownreligion.com, T: @joe_quint) is a comedian and storyteller in Los Angeles from Newton, North Carolina. He hosts and produces the podcast “Choose Your Own Religion”, interviewing comedians, artists, preachers, and more about their spirituality, as well as a live storytelling show also called Choose Your Own Religion—”the Moth with religious stories”—produced at Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena. He also runs the Copper Still Comedy show every Tuesday night at 8:30 at the Copper Still bar in Koreatown. Erin Jourdan (T: @erinimus) is a writer, editor and teacher living in Los Angeles. Her writing focuses on the fantastic, often creating paracosms, or imagined worlds that have their own language, customs, and rules. She also works with the concept of blind spots, the idea that there is a limit to human perception, yet we feel more than can be quantified. She thinks of writing as "creating clothing for ghosts." Or as the German photographer Oliver Boberg stated, "I try to build set decorations for a film which is inside the people." She collects ideas, post-it notes, to-do lists, fragments, curious words, photographs, anecdotes and overheard verbal musings and spins them into the stories you see here. T.J. Peters (tjpetersonline.com, T: @tpeters) is a humorist of little note. His screenplays have advanced in competition at the Austin Film Fest, Final Draft's Big Break, Bluecat, and others. His prose and poetry has been published by Rattle, UCLA's Journal of the Arts, No Extra Words, and is forthcoming to ELJ Publications. He considers himself an amateur falconer, but there is not evidence to support this claim.

Toddlers who are jerks, honest Moms and free-range 80’s kids! Host, Erin Whitehead, invites her Twitter buddy, Kris Dersch, to the podcast to discuss why women judge each other, the truth about how much we enjoy our children, 80’s video games and her amazing podcast, No Extra Words! Should we enjoy every single moment of our children’s lives? (Spoiler: no) Will Erin lose her shit on some Mom who produces a professional art project that a kindergartener “supposedly” did all on their own? (Spoiler: you bet your butt) Why do we have to invite ALL of these kids to a birthday party? Is life really more dangerous than in the 80’s when we were all just free-range kids? Do we all want to see pictures of the basement where Kris’ husband hoards all of his 80’s video game consoles? Will you feel smarter by listening to the podcast Kris and her production team (Kris and her dog) creates? Listen to Kris make us all feel smarter with her podcast “No Extra Words” anywhere you listen to podcasts. Happy Birthday, Harry + Jo! The first seven books of the series gave us all the story we needed. Or did they? With the additions of Pottermore, Twitter, The Cursed Child, and Fantastic Beasts, JK Rowling has many outlets to share more information about her universe. But does it all "count?" What is Canon? Is canon anything that comes from JK Rowling? Is it anything that was approved by JK Rowling? Books vs movies? First 7 or everything afterward? I'm joined by Elayna of SpeakBeasty and Paul of Blokebusters. We discuss our feelings about this and our thoughts on the new elements introduced by The Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts. Happy Birthday, Neville Longbottom! When we meet Neville in his first year at Hogwarts, we couldn't have imagined he'd turn out to be the hero we see at the end of the series. The biggest turning point came in Order of the Phoenix when Harry and Dumbledore discuss Sybill Trelawny's prophecy. What If? Melissa from Readerly Geek and I try to have fun by asking What If about each part of the series. We also try to explain the whys behind the plot points in the series. From did Voldemort pick the Potters over the Longbottoms to how would Neville handle the Triwizard Tournament and would Dumbledore care for Neville as much as he did Harry in this alternate universe. A few months ago (read: over a year ago) I (Hadas) set out to do another tv show rematch with my Iggle pals. Rewatch Recap: We previously rewatched Roswell, the alien teenage romance drama from The WB. Then Freaks and Geeks, a very short-lived cult classic. Next up was Twin Peaks, which divided our hosts. Some were die-hards and others were apprehensive, or just down right angry at it. What's Next? The show we decided to watch and rewatch was Veronica Mars. On the panel, this time, were Cassidy, Kristy, Meghan. Check them out on their own blogs and Twitter accounts! Veronica Mars is a cult classic yet Kristy and I have never seen it before. We came into it with different ideas of what the show could be and we're both very pleasantly surprised. The show is more mature than it seems. As you know, on Common Room, we are religiously and politically neutral. We'll never post happy holidays for any holiday or support a political candidate as a site/podcast. So, when I asked friends and strangers to be on the show for #Potterweek and got a request to talk about religious allusions, I was a bit nervous. Stefani, a friend who I met through work suggested this for a reason that was pretty interesting. Stefani and her siblings were not allowed to have Harry Potter in the home. Stefani has a personal connection that she generously shared. We moved on to talk about bigger Harry Potter themes, favorites, and even took some time to do some sorting and discuss those large introspective questions. Enjoy this last episode of Potterweek on what I'm calling Potterday. Happy First Day of Hogwarts!! Check out Stefani- nowhere! She hates the internet! And check out James on social media as thejacksonjd! Villains are always fun to discuss. What makes a good one? The Potter villains are pretty diverse. So diverse we sometimes have to ask "Is X a villain?" JK Rowling created a very detailed and well-plotted story. Yet how come Hogwarts' students miss out on traditional problem solving and critical thinking lessons? Are most wizards idiots? Jada an officer of Geek Girl Brunch and Julia of our future Lost rewatch podcast episodes suggested we discuss more philosophical issues in Harry Potter. Like how the media works in the wizarding world and what aspects of the muggle world do Wizards actually care about and/or get involved in. This has been one of my favorite Potterweek records so far. Relationships in Harry Potter and fun and frustrating. Ginny and Harry make sense on paper, but some people can't stand their pairing. Lily and James together is confusing, but is Lily and Snape any better? On this fourth Potterweek episode of 2016, I'm joined by Alice aka Kangaru on the interwebs and Kayla of Epicfied from all over the net. Both ladies suggested discussing the romantic relationships in Harry Potter, that they cannot stand! Which Relationships in Harry Potter Do You Dislike Most? Bonus: Stay tuned after the show for an extra bit about the Ilvermony houses on Pottermore. Depending on where you live, I hope you are making time in your life to honor sacrifice on this Veterans Day, Remembrance Day, or Armistice Day. Here at No Extra Words, we wanted to take this holiday back to its roots and make you think. This episode is a little different than our usual format and we hope you enjoy it. "In Memoriam" is a poem by Ewart Alan Mackintosh written in May 1916. Lieutenant Mackintosh was killed in action in November 1917 at the age of 24. Find more information about him and the poem at http://www.greatwar.co.uk/poems/ewart-alan-mackintosh-in-memoriam.htm. The poem is in the public domain, thanks to freesound.org for the public domain church bells sound. "Peter on the Island/Pan is Dead" is a re-imagining of an old legend by Adam McOmber. It is copyright 2015 and used with permission. Be sure to visit Adam's website at adammcomber.com. In Armistice Day tradition, this episode ends with 2 minutes of silence. The first minute is to honor those lost, and the second minute is to honor those left behind: the families, the comrades, and the veterans. We hope you will join us in this reflection. As always, please let us know what you think! http://noextrawords.wordpress.com Our theme music is "Reverie: small theme" by _ghost, used under a Creative Commons license and we are grateful.
In "Life Lessons," a woman reflects on a world she had for a moment and didn't think she'd miss. By Lorna Wood, copyright 2015, used with permission. Check out Lorna's author page at http://amazon.com/author/lornawood In "Trivia," the contestant on a public access game show thinks she is prepared until she sees what questions are being asked. By Madaline Foglesong, copyright 2015, used with permission. Find more of Madaline's work at https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/maddyfo In "Flight of Desire," a man obseres a neighbor with a hobby he'll never understand. By Diane Payne, copyright 2014, used with permission. Read Diane's bio here. No Extra Words by the Numbers: We have dozens of listeners! Every day, on average, we have 6-11 downloads of either current or back episodes. This gives us lots of room to grow...tell your friends! Including today, we have aired 24 different short stories. 10 short stories were by contributors, 2 from the public domain, and one by a listener. More contributor stories are coming! 30 different contributors are confirmed for between now and December. We have received over 70 short story submissions from over 65 different authors around the world...and have room for more! Happy listening, Kris
The public domain is a clause in copyright law allowing works which have been around for some time to be re-used and re-imagined without having to obtain permission from the copyright holder. (It's why there are so many versions of "A Christmas Carol.") No Extra Words is thrilled to use this clause to bring you two classic pieces of flash fiction. "The Tradesman," written ca. 1920 is a lesser-known story by 20th century literary great Franz Kafka. It has amazing power to resonate with 21st century readers. "I Won't," originally published in 1875 is a parable by 19th century children's writer Juliana Horatia Ewing. How is it similar to and different from the morality tales of its time? Don't forget! We have an active Challenge to the Listeners going on right now. Read the writing prompt and send your response in by Thursday, August 13 for your chance to be featured on Episode 9.
