This is a new adaptation of the classic 1986 comic book, so while the plot points of this film are openly discussed, it can hardly be called SPOILERS. Watchmen Chapter 2 is the second half of the animated adaptation of the classic 1986 comic book series. It picks up directly where Chapter 1 ended. Brandon Vietti directed both Chapters and is making his third appearance on the podcast. In this episode, Vietti discusses specific changes he made to the story based on original ideas and influence from the 2009 Zack Snyder film. He also addresses potential viewers who saw the 2019 HBO/MAX series Watchmen and may consider this film to be a prequel. Vietti also addresses the projects he's worked on that he's most known for. Watchmen Chapter 2 is out on digital and on Blu-Ray/DVD.

This is a new adaptation of the classic 1986 comic book, so while the plot points of this film are openly discussed, it can hardly be called SPOILERS. Watchmen Chapter 1 is DC's newest full-length animated film, kicking off a two-part adaptation of the acclaimed 1986 Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic book. The movie was directed by Brandon Vietti, who joined this episode to discuss Watchmen Chapter 1. Vietti is a longtime DC animator known for his work on Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Batman: Under the Red Hood. In this episode, Vietti discusses the process for adapting the storyline. He also discusses the other media adaptations, including a 2008 Motion Comic, the 2009 live-action Zack Snyder film, and the 2019 HBO Watchmen sequel/spin-off series. For Watchmen, Vietti had to walk a difficult line, staying faithful to the comic while making the story work in an animated format. Watchmen Chapter 1 is out on digital and will be released on Blu-Ray/DVD.

On the twenty- fourth episode of ATFT, I talk with artist Bernardo Goya! Bernardo is a Jacksonville- based artist and filmmaker with an experimental style. He has directed several films, many of them shorts, including Goodbye Channel 99, Sweet Temptation, and, his latest short being, In Eros We Trust. Bernardo's films have been featured at several film festivals including Sleeping Giant and Creative Veins. Goodbye Channel 99 actually earned the award for “Best Use of Music” Award at the Hysteria Film Festival in St. Louis the day we recorded this episode! Bernardo is keeping his next project under wraps but if it is anything like his previous films, it is sure to be creative, artistic, and something you've never seen before. I first met Bernardo on the set of our mutual friend, Craig “ienne!” Pedroza's, new short film We Dream of Eden! Several months later, Bernardo reached out to ask me if I'd record a voice narration for his short, In Eros We Trust (so if you listen closely you may hear a familiar voice!), which then led me to ask him if he and his brother Freddy would like to be guests on the Killers of the Flower Moon episode (Episode 13), an episode which nearly didn't happen without their help! This time around, Bernardo is back six months later for an interview after my original plans for Episode 24 fell through… it was a good one and will be rescheduled! This episode was recorded on June 29, 2024. To watch Bernardo's films, subscribe to his Gumroad account under the username IvoryTower333. Here is the link to his Gumroad channel!: https://ivorytower333.gumroad.com/l/phrtj?_gl=1*qncfq1*_ga*MTY0MTg4MDg2MC4xNzA0MzQwMjk5*_ga_6LJN6D94N6*MTcxOTU0MDMzMi42NC4xLjE3MTk1NDAzMzguMC4wLjA. Bernardo is planning to release a Blu- Ray DVD of his shorts towards the end of this year or the beginning of next year. He will be selling this DVD around Jacksonville and on his website, https://theboysfrombohemiangrove.godaddysites.com/, so stay tuned for that forthcoming announcement! In this episode, Bernardo's passion and knowledge for film is on full display as he discusses his appreciation for certain prominent figures like Martin Scorsese and Ingmar Bergman, his DVD collection, and love for the beloved Jacksonville theater, SunRay Cinema, which unfortunately just recently closed down. Bernardo also talks about his encounter with John Waters, how he crafts his films both in production and in post- production, and the different eras he has laid out for his work in film, which tends to come with a name change! All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.
400 episodes! Wild. This week, we're tackling the question of bad vs good vs great from the angle of seeking out new books, TV, and Film. It can be a hard road! Most stuff out there isn't great...so, how does one keep going, keep up the enthusiasm? We discuss what's worked for us. Also, Josh recommends Robodoc, which is currently on Tubi, and Ira recommends The Terror on AMC+ (and Blu-Ray/DVD).

Mary Fahl Interview with Phil Aston At the beginning of this year I placed the album 'Can't Get It Out Of My Head by Mary Fahl at number 5 in my list of the Best Albums of 2022. If you are a fan of Joni Mitchell, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, ELO, Pink Floyd, Richard and Linda Thompson, Neil Young, Judy Collins, George Harrison then I think you are going to love this. I am still playing it most weeks and I now also have the Deluxe Edition which comes with a 5.1 mix. In this interview I go through the album track by track and also look back at Mary's career including her stunning interpretation of Dark Side of The Moon which is also available on a BluRay DVD in 5.1 "Mary Fahl looks back to some of the essential music that has brought her sustenance and clarity by reinterpreting songs from her greatest inspirations … Pink Floyd, George Harrison, Moody Blues, ELO, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young and others. For Mary, this is a tribute to the music that defined her as an artist" Visit - https://maryfahl.com Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine

This weekend flashback episode no. 2, Kyle from The Tumbling Saber podcast, Episode 13 from 2021, original show description below... Welcome Back to The Cafe. On this week's episode my Canadian brother from a other mother stops by the cafe for a long overdue Star Wars chat. Kyle from The TumblingSaber Podcast comes by the cafe. We talk about why the release of a new Blu-Ray/DVD set now, Star Wars acting, learn how Kyle was introduced to Star Wars... and then... we go off the rails. We talk beer, death, Seinfeld and anything and everything under the twin-suns. This might just be the wildest it's ever gotten inside the cafe. But when you get two friends together that haven't talk in awhile, you gotta expect they go off topic a lot. Come to think of it, last time Kyle visited us on The Canto Cast, we went off the rails a lot there as well... so what I'm trying to say, this was a normal conversation between Kyle and myself. Parker Padgett recently joined host Elias in the cave! You can see Parker in his latest film 'ICON' as Same on August 1st across all TVOD/Digital and Blu-Ray/DVD platforms throughout North America. Young love's the topic of so many films, but rarely is it handled with earnest, authentic grace, as we see in "Icon". Anchored in the touching performances of Parker Padgett and Devon Hales, audiences will find themselves moved much like fellow beloved indie film "The Spectacular Now." When a surprise pregnancy forces Sam to face many brutal realities of adulthood and responsibility, things spiral rapidly out of control as he simultaneously tries to fight to find his own truth: why his absent father hasn't been in his life since he was one and is only a fading memory. "Icon" was inspired by a true story and stars Parker Padgett ("Surviving Lunch") and Devon Hales (Netflix's "Teenage Bounty Hunters," "Stan Against Evil"), along with Julia Denton ("The Fundamentals of Caring," "Geostorm"), Tony Demil (Succession," "Zola"), Bryce Anthony Heller ("Education in Love," "Cobra's World"), and the feature film debut of Ronald Sansone. Adapted from an award-winning short that won the presidents' award at Ringling College of Art & Design, "Icon" was filmed in Ahedo's hometown of Saint Petersburg, Florida, just prior to the pandemic. The story pulls elements from his childhood growing up in the mid 90's through the early 2000s in Florida. You can watch this interview on YouTube https://youtu.be/xyeR6nBw5Kc Have a question? Greg Cipes has voiced Beast Boy since the original Teen Titans show in 2003. After that show's successful run, Cipes went on to voice dozens of other characters. Then, in 2013, the spinoff Teen Titans Go! launched on Cartoon Network with Cipes returning to the Beast Boy role. He later reprised his role as Beast Boy in the HBO Max show Young Justice. Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse is a crossover that was announced on the 2021 DC Kids Fandome. It was released on May 24th on Blu-Ray/DVD and is slated to be released on May 28th on Cartoon Network and June 28th on HBO Max. In this episode, which Cipes recorded while walking nonstop on the streets of New York City. Accompanied by his dog, Wingman G, Cipes spoke about how Beast Boy was his first-ever role. He discussed the freedom he and the other cast members had to inject their own personalities into their characters. Follow Greg Cipes on social media @GregCipes.

Right now the movie industry is increasingly nervous, with all the big Hollywood studios saying the only way to make a profit is huge and very expensive blockbusters. But one company is going in the opposite direction - and doing very well at it. A24 specialises in smaller movies aimed mostly at cinema releases - movies like The Green Knight, Lady Bird, Lighthouse - and an upcoming tongue in cheek horror film called X. So why was it filmed mostly around Whanganui? It's an unlikely combination, an unabashed genre picture called X set in Texas - it describes itself as Boogie Nights meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre! - suddenly transferred to New Zealand. And not even mainstream backlot New Zealand - Auckland, say, or Central Otago . X was mostly shot around Whanganui, Bulls and Rangitikei. And the good news it's getting great notices already overseas. Simon Morris talks to producer Jacob Jaffke in Los Angeles about the enduring appeal of horror movies, why they work so much better in a cinema, and why he was drawn to New Zealand. X has been showing in selected cinemas this week, and then will later stream on Google Play and iTunes before heading for BluRay/DVD.

In the 50th episode of Criteria, James and Thomas finally conclude their look at Dekalog, the series of short films inspired by the Ten Commandments which Krzysztof Kieslowski made for Polish television in the late 1980s. Kieslowski concludes his notoriously bleak series on a (slightly) lighter note, the Tenth Commandment against coveting thy neighbor's goods providing plenty of opportunities to poke fun at human silliness. The absurdity is compounded when the thing being coveted is a stamp collection. Though Dekalog: Ten begins with one of its main characters singing a song that encourages the breaking of all 10 commandments, with the refrain "everything is yours", in this episode the protagonists are less the chief transgressors against the tenth commandment than they are stuck in a world shaped by the covetousness of those around them. These two brothers inherit a valuable stamp collection from their father, who neglected them in order to pursue his obsession. Along with the stamps they inherit, for a dangerous moment, his vice of covetousness, and in doing so, come to understand that that he craved was not so much the stamps as the escape from all problems and responsibilities provided by this juvenile quest. Thus the final Dekalog film continues the series' continual examination of the sins of fathers, and through this subject matter, Kieslowski's preoccupation with the terrible responsibility of human freedom and the stark consequences our actions have in the lives of others. For nobody has more responsibility than a father. In this case, the sons find some degree of reconciliation with the dead father who wounded them - or at least, they arrive at understanding through solidarity in weakness. The film's rueful observation is that we often understand and compassionate our parents only after falling into their same vices. Watch this discussion on YouTube: Dekalog can be difficult to find. Writer James DeMonaco Talks his Latest Film The Forever Purge Available Now from Universal Home Entertainment. James DeMonaco is now competing with the Saw franchise as we are now in the eighth installment (counting the short films and television series) of the Purge franchise with The Forever Purge. The New York native, who we forgive for coupling his love of the Yankees with the Jets...seriously, the Jets? Sigh, I digress, the New York native initially started created the franchise out of his fear of guns and gun violence, leading to a series of films and a series that plays into those fears. The only thing that frightens him (and myself) even more demon possession stories, especially The Exorcist. Now, with The Forever Purge, what happens when one night of blood lust just is not enough to satisfy those urges and with that notion and the reputation of Texas' love of guns, we have the perfect setting for the film. Official Synopsis: From Blumhouse, the legendary producers that brought you Halloween (2018) and The Invisible Man, the lawless next installment of The Purge franchise, featuring more action, suspence and thrills than ever before as one night descends into a never-ending Purge. Arriving just in time for your pre-Halloween horror movie marathon, The Forever Purge is yours to own on Digital September 14, 2021, and on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD September 28, 2021 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Featuring an alternative storyboard opening, deleted scene and a behind-the-scenes look inside the creation of the stunts, wild costumes, action and gore, The Forever Purge is the perfect addition to your collection and "one of the best Purge movies yet!" (CinemaBlend). The podcast returns to yet another episode from Dekalog, the series of Polish short films inspired by the Ten Commandments. Part seven, based on the commandment "Thou shalt not steal", is about a young woman who kidnaps her own daughter. It asks the question: can you steal something that belongs to you? But it also asks: what happens when motherhood is stolen from you? Part seven also returns to some of the parental themes raised in part four. There, we saw the disastrous consequences of a father abdicating his God-given authority. Here we focus on an overbearing grandmother and mother who force a small child to fill their psychological needs, but we can't help but notice the weak fathers lurking in the background, failing to step in and set proper boundaries. Crank up the speakers and blast Madonna's Die Another Day because Episode #8 of The Words Are Not Enough is here!In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:Tomorrow Never Lies* Ben Cooke returning for Bond 25 * In an apparent exclusive from Archive007, Daniel Craig's stunt double, Ben Cooke, has reportedly stepped into the role of Stunt Coordinator for Bond 25, replacing longtime Coordinator, Gary Powell.* Daniel Craig banned from getting romantic with Moneypenny * It seems the writing process for Bond 25 is in full swing. According to the Express, an anonymous LA source has claimed the following regarding the ongoing scripting process: “The production company have reached out to several writers to suggest plot ideas and twists for Bond in Daniel's final outing. They wanted ideas that had not been seen in their franchise before to try to shake things up. One idea was for Bond finally to move beyond flirting and one liners and actually share a romance with Moneypenny. But that idea was nixed as it would go against the whole relationship built up during their screen careers.” * This seems in line with comments Naomi Harris has recently made regarding her off-screen relationship with Daniel Craig and how their chemistry plays on screen: "Chemistry is something you either have or don't have, so its a real gamble when people cast you, because you just never know whether the chemistry's going to work. Sometimes you have couples who are dating in real life and they have no chemistry on screen whatsoever so you just never know. I am just lucky that it works with Daniel and I'm looking forward to coming back.” * While she doesn't outright state it, her comments seem to suggest a continuation of the platonic-but-flirtatious dynamic we have seen thus far in the series.* Fincher Interview: Maybe tackle a Bond film? * In a recent interview with Empire, David Fincher revealed that he would not want to do a Star Wars film due to the immense pressure; adding that he had discussed helming the upcoming Episode 9 with Kathleen Kennedy, but ultimately declined. * While this doesn't directly pertain to Bond, David Fincher is a name that has come up frequently surrounding the Bond franchise, but is an idea that has often been dismissed owing to Fincher's seeming aversion to franchise films. But with this news that he considered Star Wars, does this mean he may consider Bond at some point down the track?Q-Branch* The Man With The Golden Gun Manuscript Emerges * A one-of-a-kind author's proof of 'The Man With The Golden Gun' has emerged that contains Ian Fleming's revisions to his original manuscript for his final James Bond novel. The corrected typescript is 182 numbered pages of typed foolscap, with five further preliminary pages and a single sheet of suggested (later adopted) corrections by Kingsley Amis, all bound in a cloth folder. Authorial revisions in Ian Fleming's handwriting cover approximately 80 pages with further editorial revisions in green and black ink.
