Amanda’s podcasting journey   Amanda has just reached her 2nd podcast anniversary for her current show, Great Beer Adventure. However, it was nearly 3 years ago that she started looking at podcasting. She was a teacher, feeling depressed with a very long commute. Her husband recommended listening to Serial, and then one day said to her, ‘You could do this. You could make a podcast.’ Amanda says she never does anything by half so she dived full on into the deep end.   She always teaches herself how to do things before showing others that she’s working on it, so Amanda actually had a starter podcast that she published called Dear Diary. It was her talking into a microphone, learning the process of editing and uploading, but she has long since deleted it. Somebody told her early on that ‘your first podcast will die’ so the purpose of that first podcast was really just to be a practice and to kill it off once she knew what she was doing.   Wanting to go after something she felt passionate about, once she was comfortable, Amanda started Great Beer Adventure in 2015. These days, she is no longer teaching and spends her days doing podcast- and beer-related things fulltime. The podcast itself isn’t a full-time job but Amanda also does social media for a malt company, is putting together an event for beer geeks, and is helping Jessica Kupfermann with a program. Without the podcast none of that would be possible and she’s glad she’s been able to make up her own job.   Podcasting in the wild   First and foremost, Amanda makes a point to go where her people are. She calls it ‘podcasting in the wild’. The show is about people’s stories and their passions around craft beer and she’s talked to everybody in the industry, from malstsers, hops farmers, brewers and the people that clean the tap lines. She wants them to feel the most comfortable so they’ll tell her their innermost fears and joys—if she can make somebody cry, she gets excited—so she has recorded in hops fields, warehouses, breweries, tap rooms and bars. The only thing that ever gets recorded not out in the wild is the intro and outros, and occasionally a special episode via Skype.   Amanda has two set ups of equipment for this type of podcasting. If she’s recording an interview, she’ll set up her ZoomH6 with either ATR2100 or ATR2005 microphones on barrels or tabletops. Alternatively, at events, she uses a leather harness with a mic and Zoom H2N so she can do vox pop (she said popvoxing…but I think it’s supposed to be voxpop?) clips with various people at the event. The feedback from listeners is that they like this because the mics pic up both the voices and the ambiance sounds. Listeners feel like they’re at the event. Plus, in recording on location, the guests feel more comfortable so Amanda finds she is able to get past the PR jargot pretty quickly. It’s been a wonderful way to get to know people.   Despite the name of the show, the guests don’t necessarily talk about the beer that much. Amanda is also clear that the show isn’t about reviewing the beer or talking about the flavors. It’s about the stories behind the beer and the passion people bring to this industry. She’s working on having some different segments and including different voices, including working with correspondents to bring in breweries from all around the world.   The evolution of the show notes   Amanda has done a bunch of different things with the show notes. She says she has done what you’re supposed to do, what she wanted to do and then threw all of that into the fan and let I come out the otherside. Now she gives the raw audio to her editor and instead of just recapping the show, he makes the show notes into more of a story. The blog post that accompanies each episode includes his reaction to the episode. It’s a little deeper than the traditional bullet points or paragraphs people are used to.   Amanda’s goals for the show   Amanda has two main goals for the show. Firstly, she has an insatiable curiosity and wants to know how everything works, so she’s loved being able to do that. Secondly, her goal is to help people learn all that goes into their craft beer, and help new people find and learn to love craft beer. If you like coffee or wine or spirits, there are different beers out there for you.   To do all the recording on location, there is obviously a lot of travel involved. Amanda’s first step was to ‘take Maine by storm’ and at this point she feels she has done that. There are over 90 breweries in the state and although she hasn’t featured all of them, she’s covered a lot.   Engage with your audience where they are   The next step is to take on the world, which means more travel outside of Maine. Whenever she goes to events she will visit breweries and bring her microphone. Recently Amanda went to MAPCON (Mid Atlantic Podcast Conference) in Philly and on the way she visited breweries in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Similarly, she’s done some day trips to New Hampshire and also recorded in Orlando on a trip to PodFest.   Amanda also utilizes correspondents from around the world so that she can share the stories of craft beer from places she can’t travel herself. She encourages people to talk to their local brewers and the people in the tap rooms, to get to know them and submit a 7 – 10 minute piece of audio.    That’s also her advice to other podcasters: find ways to engage with your audience where they are physically located. Think about how you can actually get out there and get out of your own comfort zone!   Find out more from Amanda:   You can follow Amanda on Instagram @greatbeeradventure or find out more on the website, www.GreatBeerAdventure.com

Happy Birthday, Harry + Jo! The first seven books of the series gave us all the story we needed. Or did they? With the additions of Pottermore, Twitter, The Cursed Child, and Fantastic Beasts, JK Rowling has many outlets to share more information about her universe. But does it all "count?" What is Canon? Is canon anything that comes from JK Rowling? Is it anything that was approved by JK Rowling? Books vs movies? First 7 or everything afterward? I'm joined by Elayna of SpeakBeasty and Paul of Blokebusters. We discuss our feelings about this and our thoughts on the new elements introduced by The Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts. Happy Birthday, Neville Longbottom! When we meet Neville in his first year at Hogwarts, we couldn't have imagined he'd turn out to be the hero we see at the end of the series. The biggest turning point came in Order of the Phoenix when Harry and Dumbledore discuss Sybill Trelawny's prophecy. What If? Melissa from Readerly Geek and I try to have fun by asking What If about each part of the series. We also try to explain the whys behind the plot points in the series. From did Voldemort pick the Potters over the Longbottoms to how would Neville handle the Triwizard Tournament and would Dumbledore care for Neville as much as he did Harry in this alternate universe. (from neatorama.com) In Disney's animated movie Finding Nemo, the animators forgot to tell you one thing about clownfish: they can change gender! Clownfish live in a group consisting of a breeding pair of male and female, as well as some non-breeding males. There is strict hierarchy based on size: the largest is the female, next largest is the male, and then the non-breeding males. If the female dies (or gets fished, I suppose), the male will change sex and become the female! Then the largest of the non-breeding males will get a promotion to become the breeding male. Sneaker Male http://the-earth-story.com The most common mating strategy involves a large adult male (age 7+) building a nest and then providing parental care for his offspring. The male will groom the eggs with his tail and will attack anything that comes near his nest. Males even protect the nest after the eggs have hatched. The larger the male, the better chances he will have of defending himself and his offspring. Nesting is a way for a male to show off his fitness and reproductive ability. These older males also develop a dark spot behind the gills and brilliant blue coloration, which is a very noticeable signal that the male is ready to mate. Physical displays that symbolize reproductive fitness are common in the animal kingdom, but this does not always mean the largest male is the only one to reproduce. There are adaptations within bluegill populations that work around the parental male life cycle. Some bluegill males use what scientists have named “cuckolding” or “sneaking”. Sneaker males, smaller and younger (age 2+) than their parental male competitors, wait until the nesting male and female are about to spawn. As the female begins releasing eggs into the water for the male to fertilize, the sneaker will dart into the nest and quickly release his milt (sperm) in the hopes that he will at least fertilize some of the eggs. Sneaker males are unusual enough but there are also “satellite” males. Smaller male bluegill will develop the coloration and behavior of female bluegill. Female bluegill lack the bright colors that males have. This helps disguise them from the larger, aggressive parental males. Once the male and female begin fertilization, the mimic will swim up to the female and release his milt. The adult male does not see it as a threat so both males are able to reproduce. These three life histories do not overlap. Parental males are always parental males since they tend to mature later in life. Sneakers and satellites begin mating around age 2 and usually live much short lives than male parents. This is where the tradeoff mentioned above becomes evident. Parental males live longer, mature at an older age and are the most likely to produce the most offspring. Sneakers and satellites mate at a younger age but will likely produce less viable offspring. It is currently unknown what determines if a male becomes a parent, sneaker or satellite. It is believed to be a combination of genetics as well as environmental pressures (such as a lake filled with many large males) that determine which life history a male will follow. A nightmare for Male Anglerfish http://mentalfloss.com/article/57800/horrors-anglerfish-mating When you think of an anglerfish, you probably think of something like the creature above: Big mouth. Gnarly teeth. Lure bobbing from its head. Endless nightmares following. During the 19th century, when scientists began to discover, describe, and classify anglerfish from a particular branch of the anglerfish family tree—the suborder Ceratioidei—that’s what they thought of, too. The problem was that they were only seeing half the picture. The specimens that they were working with were all female, and they had no idea where the males were or what they looked like. Researchers sometimes found some other fish that seemed to be related based on their body structure, but they lacked the fearsome maw and lure typical of ceratioids and were much smaller—sometimes only as long as six or seven millimeters—and got placed into separate taxonomic groups. It wasn’t until the 1920s—almost a full century after the first ceratioid was entered into the scientific record—that things started to become a little clearer. In 1922, Icelandic biologist Bjarni Saemundsson discovered a female ceratioid with two of these smaller fish attached to her belly by their snouts. He assumed it was a mother and her babies, but was puzzled by the arrangement. “I can form no idea of how, or when, the larvae, or young, become attached to the mother. I cannot believe that the male fastens the egg to the female,” he wrote. “This remains a puzzle for some future researchers to solve.” When Saemundsson kicked the problem down the road, it was Charles Tate Regan, working at the British Museum of Natural History in 1924, who picked it up. Regan also found a smaller fish attached to a female ceratioid. When he dissected it, he realized it wasn’t a different species or the female angler’s child. It was her mate. The “missing” males had been there all along, just unrecognized and misclassified, and Regan and other scientists, like Norwegian zoologist Albert Eide Parr, soon figured out why the male ceratioids looked so different. They don’t need lures or big mouths and teeth because they don’t hunt, and they don’t hunt because they have the females. The ceratioid male, Regan wrote, is “merely an appendage of the female, and entirely dependent on her for nutrition.” In other words, a parasite. When ceratioid males go looking for love, they follow a species-specific pheromone to a female, who will often aid their search further by flashing her bioluminescent lure. Once the male finds a suitable mate, he bites into her belly and latches on until his body fuses with hers. Their skin joins together, and so do their blood vessels, which allows the male to take all the nutrients he needs from his host/mate’s blood. The two fish essentially become one. A few months ago (read: over a year ago) I (Hadas) set out to do another tv show rematch with my Iggle pals. Rewatch Recap: We previously rewatched Roswell, the alien teenage romance drama from The WB. Then Freaks and Geeks, a very short-lived cult classic. Next up was Twin Peaks, which divided our hosts. Some were die-hards and others were apprehensive, or just down right angry at it. What's Next? The show we decided to watch and rewatch was Veronica Mars. On the panel, this time, were Cassidy, Kristy, Meghan. Check them out on their own blogs and Twitter accounts! Veronica Mars is a cult classic yet Kristy and I have never seen it before. We came into it with different ideas of what the show could be and we're both very pleasantly surprised. The show is more mature than it seems. It's well-executed plot wise and by its incredible and underrated cast. As you know, on Common Room, we are religiously and politically neutral. We'll never post happy holidays for any holiday or support a political candidate as a site/podcast. So, when I asked friends and strangers to be on the show for #Potterweek and got a request to talk about religious allusions, I was a bit nervous. Stefani, a friend who I met through work suggested this for a reason that was pretty interesting. Stefani and her siblings were not allowed to have Harry Potter in the home. Stefani has a personal connection that she generously shared. We moved on to talk about bigger Harry Potter themes, favorites, and even took some time to do some sorting and discuss those large introspective questions. Enjoy this last episode of Potterweek on what I'm calling Potterday. Happy First Day of Hogwarts!! Check out Stefani- nowhere! She hates the internet!
