You probably know Jason Khalipa as a CrossFit Games legend. You might know him as the owner of NCFIT, formerly NorCal CrossFit. But did you know that he oversees more than 20 gyms and 150 employees worldwide under the NCFIT umbrella?Jason began as many gym owners do. He opened his first gym in a 1,500-square-foot space with no credit and a shallow bank account. He coached classes, handed out flyers and did the books. Sometimes he spent the night on the gym couch. At Two-Brain Business, we call that Founder Phase, and Jason didn't stay there long. By treating his gym as a business instead of a hobby—prioritizing sales and marketing, putting the right staff in the right seats and tapping into new markets—he turned his tiny gym into a global fitness empire. In this episode, Jason is here with Two-Brain Business mentor Jay Williams to share how he did it and answer your questions, from payroll to whether or not to affiliate to how to start a corporate wellness program. This week on the podcast we have Pat Barber!! We talk about a lot of stuff like; Coaching vs. Programming, Intentionally Building the Next Generation, Competing at a High level, and Being a Badass Dad with Pat Barber. Here's a quick bio Pat Wrote: Back in 2003, I was working as a room service attendant at a Santa Cruz hotel and deciding what to do with myself. I decided to apply to be a sheriff, however at the same time, I was also getting pretty pumped about this workout thing I was doing called CrossFit. Later, I would fail the oral interview portion of the sheriff’s exam because they thought I was more interested in CrossFit than joining the police force. I was bummed and stunned at the time but in retrospect, I think they were right. My real journey with CrossFit began shortly after that when I got hired to work for CrossFit.com filming and editing video. I would later make my way from behind the camera to in front of it, coaching, and training in many of the early CrossFit.com videos. In 2008, at the Aromas Ranch, I competed in my first CrossFit Games. Since then, I’ve competed in the Games 6 times, helped my wife run the first CrossFit affiliate in New Zealand, and returned to the States to help Jason Khalipa grow and lead the NorCal empire. I have also continued to train and develop coaches for NorCal CrossFit and as part of the L1 and L2 staff for CrossFit.com; in fact, I’ve helped about 15,000 people through their CrossFit L1’s over the past several years. So, as you can see, my experiences with CrossFit have been varied… a little of this and a little of that… I’m an athlete, a Level 4 Coach, a media guy, and the Head of Coaching Development at Norcal CrossFit. I’m also a husband and father who loves surfing, Magic: The Gathering, potato chips and hanging with my boy in his Batman fort. I do not love L-Sits. Or cooked lemons.
This episode features Ed Morrison. Ed is an Australian strength & conditioning and CrossFit coach living in China while working for Norcal CrossFit. Ed is also part of CrossFit HQ's seminar staff, meaning Ed is a teacher of the teachers. If you want to start your own career in CrossFit coaching you will go through the L1 certification process and take a certiufication ran by Ed and the rest of the L1 seminar staff. It goes without saying that Ed is one of the most knowledgable sources for all things health, fitness and CrossFit. Our conversation today delves into the good, bad and the ugly of CrossFit. Ed does a wonderful job flying the flag for the brand and addresses some of the questions behind CrossFit's methodology. It is a fantastic conversation and one that we think CrossFit and non-CrossFitter alike can enjoy. If you like it please subscribe and rate here on iTunes. It will really help us get off the ground! Greenstars, the first 100 per cent non-browning apples are a cross between a granny smith and a delbarestivale apple. The apples are green, sweet, juicy, have a thin skin and have the highest vitamin C content of any apple, which helps keep them naturally white for days after cutting. The kanzi is the number one apple sold in Europe and is bright red and crunchy, with a long shelf life — a cross between a gala and braeburn apple. So ask for Atlanta kanzi and greenstar apples in your local greengrocers Victoria wide. This podcast is also brought to you by LocSam Solutions. Barbell Business - Podcast for gym owners by Barbell Shrugged
This week on BARBELL BUSINESS, we interview Pat Barber, a CrossFit Games Athlete (since 2008), Co-owner of Warmup & Workout, and Head of Coaches Development at NorCal CrossFit. In this show, we discuss: How Pat got his career start in the fitness industry Innovatively making people better through effective coaching Hiring and coach training tips and methods What he looks for in awesome coaches The importance of a collective mission
Imagine it's 2003. Your high school volleyball coach decides weightlifting will help the team's jumping, so he Googles "clean and jerk Santa Cruz." The coach was Tony Budding, and Pat Barber was on the volleyball team. Over the last 13 years, Barber has "grown up" with CrossFit, first training in the original HQ gym and then becoming part of the early CrossFit Media staff. His first competition was filmed in "Every Second Counts" (Barber is the cover model) and he's made the Games as an individual and Team athlete several times since 2008. Now he's Head of Coach Development for NorCal CrossFit, and founder of WarmupandWorkout.com with his wife, Taz. In "Coach's Confessional," I talk about trying to keep every client (mistake!) and how to fire the bad ones. Recorded on January 15, 2016.
This week I interviewed Pat "Manimal" Barber. I'm not sure exactly where he got that nickname, maybe because he's so hairy. Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this one. Pat is one of the OG Crossfit Games Competitors. He has competed for several years as an individual and the last two years on NorCal Crossfit team. The most interesting part of this interview for me was talking to Pat about developing coaches. Pat has been on the Crossfit L1 staff for years and has taught L2s and other seminars. He talks about how you can become a better coach and get the most out of your athletes. We also talk about his new company Warmup and Workout, which is his answer to the issue of affiliate programming. He and his wife Taz create detailed lesson plans (Session plans as they call it) for every single day.
