Are you ready to take it to the limit to win? Do you even truly know where the limit is? Have you been there, tested it, and fought through the pain, only to make sure you could go there again. But the next time you'll have the confidence to go there and even further? Our limit isn't a sustainable pace, but it is a place we need to be comfortable working in. Endurance Coach Chris Hinshaw joined Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff on the back of the US Army Fitness Truck at 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games for a discussion on the lifetime of work it takes to build capacity and create the adaptations in your body needed to perform with the best. Chris is the founder of Aerobic Capacity, a 10x Ironman Competitor, and one of the world's top endurance coaches having coached 35 CrossFit Games Champions, the US Military, and professional and olympic athletes to the podium. Chis and Fran nerd out on pushing the boundaries of your lactic threshold and how getting comfortable in that "death zone” must be embraced if you expect to win against the world's best. Jessie pushes Chris on mastering the art of establishing a breathing cadence, pacing yourself effectively, and understanding how rest between intervals is just as important as the work put in during the sets. Today's podcast features Mark McLaughlin. Mark is the founder of Performance Training Center, and currently works as a physical preparation/strength coach in the Lake Oswego school district. Mark has had a diverse sporting history as a youth, and has been active in the field of physical preparation since 1997. Mark has trained over 700 athletes at all competitive levels, from Olympic to grade school athletes, and has worked with organizations such as the NFL, MLB, NBA, NCAA universities, high schools, and youth sports. The field of sports performance makes a lot of pendulum swings. We go from over-conditioning athletes to denouncing conditioning. From static stretching, to not stretching, to reconsidering stretching, to name a few. In the process of the swings, we do trend upwards (such as saving athletes from over-conditioning based practices with poor motor learning tactics). At the same time, I don't believe we ask ourselves often enough if we are letting the pendulum swing too far. What I've found is that for every rule that seems to be created, there are instantly going to be athletes, or entire training groups that break that rule. The only way to understand it all, is to constantly be expanding your viewpoints. We need to look at the broader mechanisms of biology, psychology, motor learning, and the long-term developmental principles of athletes to really gain wisdom in our guidance of athletes and individuals to their highest potential. On today's podcast, Mark talks about the polarity of his physical preparation process, on one end, giving the kids a dynamic pedagogical, free play-oriented training experience, and on the other, using technology to assess biological readiness markers and preparation levels for their sport. Mark finishes the show speaking on aerobic readiness as a recovery marker for explosive sport training. No matter where you are on the sport training spectrum, be it sport coaching, motor learning or purely physical development, there is a lot to be learned from Mark's broad spectrum of knowledge in this episode. This show connects physical preparation with a depth of true sports development Today's episode is brought to you by Lost Empire Herbs. Key topics in this episode:Question #1: Should Training Stress Score (TSS) be adjusted for extreme environments?Does actual training stress change with heat or cold enough to alter TSS?After rides on technical or rough courses, examine TSS from HR or Power (hrTSS vs TSS). Go with the higher one because HR may reflect effort while not pedaling.LSS (Life Stress Score) - high/medium/low subjective measure. LSS does not increase TSS on stressful work day, but LSS provides context. When stress is higher (TSS, hrTSS, or LSS), give grace, add recovery. Question #2: During long rides, I consume my first energy drink after 90 minutes, and then I can ride harder than I could at the beginning. Does anyone know why? Effect of sugar and caffeine (i.e. from Red Bull, Monster or sports drink) on energy and focus in short termBenefits of consuming calories earlier and more frequently during long ridesNutrition recommendations specific to early morning and after-work training sessions.ASK A QUESTION FOR A FUTURE PODCASTLinksEffects of Acute Cold Exposure on Sub-Maximal Exercise:https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6513768/Aerobic Capacity not effected, but decrease in sub-max performanceEffects of Cold Exposure in Elite XC Skiiers:https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9562357/Decrease in sub-max time to exhaustionVO2 Max unchangedHostAdam Pulford has been a CTS Coach for more than 13 years and holds a B.S. in Exercise Physiology. That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day!. That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik Korem See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Most people also don't know that the Old School Athletes preached heart health just as much as they did weightlifting. They were well rounded athletes always looking for more ways to express the best version of themselves. We've seen the growth and popularity of interval and HITT training come more from a perspective of “saving time” and hitting the intensity hard leaving most people clueless as to what goals they should actually be working for when it comes to heart health. In this episode, we discuss strategies to better help you understand what you should be working for.

Chris Hinshaw stops by for a multifaceted and inspiring conversation about the interesting progression of his career, what led him to discover an entirely new perspective on fitness, and the turning point conversations he had with mentors that were instrumental in guiding him towards his path. Things also get a little science-y and technical as we hear about all that he has learned from his current position as one of the leading Crossfit coaches in the world. Known internationally for his extensive knowledge and practical experience developing aerobic capacity in athletes of all experience levels using his comprehensive, cutting edge approach to training, Chris is widely considered one of the top endurance coaches in the world and is the founder of aerobiccapacity.com. TIMESTAMPS: Brad introduces his guest who has a very interesting story to tell about how he got into coaching CrossFit champions. [01:30] Chris describes how a new and different shoe brought him back to serious running. [07:12] What kind of concessions do we need to make as we age and yet want to keep running? [10:15] There is much to worry about as you get older as far as athletic performance. [14:04] Chris's history with the Ironman is epic and then evolved into CrossFit. [19:17] Because he had neglected muscles by just exclusively doing triathlon, he was advised to try CrossFit. It gave him his health back. [28:12] Your body may break down but your brain may still tell you you can do it. [31:56] Making a career change was a risk but the right thing to do. [44:57] How did Chris's method fix the missing piece in CrossFit training? It starts with pacing. [51:52] CrossFit is for people who weren't good at anything. [55:41] Chris Hinshaw has changed the sport of CrossFit. The people who are interested in CrossFit have disparate goals. He personalizes it for them. [58:17] What is a standard rate of fatigue for a non-runner? [01:02:05] Some people perform CrossFit at a high level and too frequently. That is not beneficial in the long run. [01:12:51] The high intensity creates that fatigue, the low intensity clears the fatigue. Hey guys Ron Leon Here! Meet Joe Rodonis & Andrew Mariani IN JOE RODONIS OWN WORDS" t's great meeting you and I'm excited to share my story. I'm proud to say I'm living out and pursuing my dream, but it wasn't always that way. I grew up in Chicago with a great family and was very active in team sports growing up. I'm incredibly close with my brother and grew up with amazing parents. I left Chicago to study Finance at Indiana University - Bloomington. I began my professional career as a financial analyst at a Fortune 20 HealthCare company. I had a 10 year career there, and gradually moved into Sales Management, selling Nuclear Medicine in the Carolinas. While I had a great career, I began to realize this wasn't going to be the right fit for me in the long run. In 2017, my Father and my Grandfather both passed away suddenly…which changed my life. A year later, I made the decision to leave my corporate job and “pursue my dreams”. This lead me to Cape Town, South Africa in 2017-2018 where I lived for 6 months as a model. An incredible experience where I spent time exploring the country, hiking, meditating, and diving into the fitness scene. In 2018, I decided to move to New York which lead me to find Tone House. I fell in love with the vision and community here. I am a Head Coach and Lead Instructor on Tone House TV (OnDemand). I also co-host a podcast with our Dietitian, Ryan Turner called The Breakdown. Represented by IMG Model Management, I have worked with brands such as; UnderArmour, GIII, Michael Strahan, Starter, Ten Thousand, Dirt Devil, Hanes, Men's Fitness. As a Coach, my mission is to help others realize and unlock their potential and using training as a method to do so. I believe we are all capable of more than we may believe; and training allowed me a way to prove that to myself. I want to share that gift with everyone I work with as they pursue their own dreams. MEET ANDREW MARIANI A lifelong athlete and collegiate lacrosse player, Andrew began personal training in college with his team's strength and conditioning coach. He has been training and programming for individuals and groups ever since. Andrew is passionate about helping people break down their barriers and discover their true potential. Fun Fact Andrew does a crossword puzzle every day. Certifications Onnit Foundations, CrossFit L-1, CrossFit Mobility, Aerobic Capacity, Power Monkey Olympic Lifting, Power Monkey Gymnastics, Kettlebell Athletics Level 1 Andrew also works in a concept group fitness conditioning modality across the states called "STRONG NEWYORK", and also he's transitioning into the field of fitness consulting, and the opening of gyms across America a true example of entrepreneur , and grinder. In this episode you will learn all about hypertrophy and aerobic capacity training. You will also learn what to expect from "Body Comp" and why it will be advantageous to add "Body Comp to your training routine.
In this episode, I sat down with Chris Hinshaw - coach to hundreds of athletes around the world, most notably the top finishers at the CrossFit Games the past several years. He's coached Mat Fraser, Rich Froning, Katrín Davíðsdóttir... the list goes on. We talk about how he started coaching all of these wonderful athletes and how he had to prove himself to get there. You'll quickly see why Chris is a thought-leader in the aerobic/endurance arena - he's a wealth of knowledge and never stops learning. His attention to detail is really what blew my mind and made me want to start intentionally tracking my fitness progress to improve and get better. In our chat, we spoke about how Chris tested a new carbon fiber sole from Adidas. Here are the results of his test using the data collected from his Garmin watch.Links:http://aerobiccapacity.com/Aerobic Capacity on InstagramChris Hinshaw's Personal InstagramAdidas Carbon Plate ShoeGarmin Running Watch
Considerations for "seasoned" runners I started endurance running at age 58. I'm now 65 and run 8-10 full marathons and 10-15 half marathons annually plus a host of shorter distances with my kids and grandkids. As I was ramping up I don't recall seeing much guidance on considerations that more “seasoned” individuals should factor in versus the younger crowd. I know I went down the minimalist track and paid dearly for it with shin and knee issues. Full cushion for this senior. Also, Fartleks and aggressive hill repeats can be injury-prone too and I think proper cadence is even more critical to lessen impact stress. It would be great to encourage more participation in the 50 plus crowd that exclaim “oh, my knees are too bad” or use some other excuse that are really euphemisms for fear and lack of knowledge of how to add running to their regimen safely. All the best, Steve This week's question comes from Steve who wants to know what special considerations the more seasoned athletes have when getting into running. Episode 29 | Tips for the Older Runner with Dr Rich Willy Some Statistics: - Muscle mass loss as we age is just under 1% per year over 30 years old (actually ~ 8% per decade) - VO2 max declines 7% per decade - Finish time declines 8% per decade - Max HR declines ~ 1 beat per year after age 20 - More muscle mass loss and tendon stiffness loss in the calf - where we get 50% of our propulsion - 13% reduction in stride length from 20 to 60 years old - Aerobic Capacity of a runner in their 80's is double that of a non-runner Fun Fact: - In 2013 a couple in Australia in their 70's did a marathon a day for a whole year and ran all the way around Australia. They ate only raw plants and she was a cancer survivor! (@janette.murraywakelin and her husband, Alan Murray) Minimalist Running Shoes for Seniors: - Shin pain in uncommon among seniors as it's usually a bone stress reaction and seniors are more prone to musculotendinous injuries - Switching to minimalist shoes forces a mid or forefoot strike in SOME runners. - This shunts stress down to the lower leg away from the knee. Placing more demand on the calf or "plantarflexors" - Lacking strength and tissue tolerance here could account for the injury trouble. Hill Training for Seniors: - Hills are tough for seniors as they demand more power from the calf. Seniors typically have less power in the calf due to muscle wasting - Hills help develop power and prevent muscle mass loss. They are really important for older runners but you have to build up very very slowly as they are risky business - I'd say impact stress is less concerning in the older runners as they are less prone to bony injuries and more prone to muscular and connective tissue injuries like tendinopathy, muscle tears and plantar fasciopathy. The endurance coach behind CrossFit Games Champions Rich Froning, Matt Fraser, Tia-Claire Toomey, Katrin Davidstotter and 30 CrossFit Games Champions in totals joins the show. Chris Hinshaw has recently made his name as The Endurance Authority in the world of CrossFit in the last decade, but he has been a master of all things Aerobic Capacity long before his most recent rise to prominence. Following a career that saw him earn the honors of All American as a swimmer in College, Chris went on to compete as a World Class Professional Tri-Athlete. A 10x Iron Man Competitor, Chris had many notable finishes including a 2nd place overall finish at the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships. While his athletic background as an elite collegiate swimmer and professional tri-athlete are credentials enough, we learn in today's episode that the road to becoming one of the most widely recognized CrossFit coaches on the planet was not the direct path you might expect. Chris shares his own athletic journey that led him to CrossFit. How he got started coaching CrossFit Champion Jason Khalipa. Why his assessment of the sport and validation of his athlete's approach to the CrossFit Games forced the sport to adapt and what it meant for him and the sport to be named CrossFit's Aerobic Capacity Subject Matter Expert. Chris shares his perspective on why he's had such success in helping his athletes improve their performance. How he approaches identifying opportunities for improvement. The real metric he uses to determine if his coaching is successful. The conversation that forced him to jump into coaching full time. The approach that he uses to give his athlete's a voice and increase buy-in. The idea of the interference effect, and how counter to popular perception endurance training actually helped an elite athlete like Rich Froning increase his explosiveness. With a clear passion for helping athletes and individuals reach their full potential, Chris the new sport and service horizons that he is currently expanding into. Why his Aerobic Capacity is a perfect hybrid that combines his passion for performance and data science. While it's officially "Base time" for many cyclists in the Northern Hemisphere, many are not getting 50% (or more) of what they can (or should) out of their time on the road building their Aerobic Energy System. LSD (Long Slow Distance) is still the mantra for many, and while these kinds of rides ARE necessary, they should NOT be the only kind of training that you do to help improve your riding or triathloning (if that is even a word, lol). If you're looking to build a bigger, STRONGER engine on which to ride, race, or compete, you can & MUST use STRENGTH TRAINING, along with in-sport training, to MASSIVELY increase your Wattage. Perhaps the best part of using this approach, is you get BETTER results, for a fraction of the amount of time (and boredom) it takes you when doing only Long Slow Distance training! Yet NOBODY talks about this! But only doing Long Slow Distances leaves us only challenging 2 of the 3 Pillars we need to build in order to increase our aerobic capacity. Don't get me wrong, you DO need long rides, runs, and swims, but when and HOW you execute them, as well as your ability to Recover & Adapt to them, play key roles. In todays episode we discuss 2 Training approaches- 1 which can be done with strength training or riding/running, and another which is often abused and misused on the bike, in order to not only boost your Aerobic Capacity, but also your Aerobic Power- an incredibly frequently neglected part of the energy system, which leaves so much potential on the table for endurance athletes. Yes, Strength Training for Cyclists & Strength Training for Triathletes need to be done differently, and this is one of the many ways in which we need to change the thinking! Yes, you read that right! When you understand todays 3 parts of how the Aerobic Energy System are built, you can & MUST use STRENGTH TRAINING, along with in-sport training, to MASSIVELY increase your Wattage; and for a fraction of the amount of time it takes you in your sport. Yet NOBODY talks about this, perhaps because of the thought that in order to have a "bigger engine" that we have to put in long, longer, and really longer hours on the pavement, in the pool, and on the road. But this isn't totally true, and in fact leaves us only challenging 2 of the 3 categories in which we need to address in order to increase our aerobic capacity. Don't get me wrong, you DO need long rides, runs, and swims, but when and HOW you execute them, as well as your ability to Recover & Adapt to them, play key roles. We also discuss how using Tempo as a part of your Strength Training program can allow you to MASSIVELY increase your watts per KG out on the bike, and on the road.
