L1 Journal Pages p118 - p122 (chapter) p180 - p193 (movement guide) **Topics to Discuss** - What is the power zone? - Why is the front rack of a strict press different than a front squat? - How do you fix excessive layback in the strict press? Can you give me 3 examples of different ways to fix this? - Can you come up onto your toes during a push press or is that a sign of a fault occurring? - Is the 30% statement truly realistic? If so, why don't we practice squat jerks regularly to reach that potential? - What do you both think is the most commonly missed fault in teaching any of these three movements? - Why is the strict press not included in the push press progression, and neither included in the push jerk progression. Don't they all layer on one another? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/besthouroftheirday/support

Pharos Fit Rewind #3 - Train to Avoid PainThis next podcast is trying to avoid pain with Emylee Covell, who is an expert in all things prehab, rehab, and mobility. We talk about assessing, position activation, ranges of motion, and adhesion. We want people to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible. It's not just about breaking the body down all the time with exercise. It's about building the body up and being smart as well as hard.Feeling pain doesn't mean your body has failed. In fact, it signals a body doing its job by letting you know something's up. By heeding its wise (if blunt) counsel, you can effectively identify and deal with the cause. For most of us, the natural response to pain signals is resistance—to push them away or deny that they even exist. Yet ignoring pain only serves to add an extra layer of angst to an already unpleasant situation. Not only do you still have the pain to deal with, but now you have to keep up the ruse that the pain isn't really there. Inviting pain in is the first step to understanding how to come to terms with it.Today I'm joined with my co-owner and wife Emylee Covell co-owner of Pharos Athletic Club. Overcoming an unhealthy childhood of obesity, rheumatoid arthritis and hip dysplasia, Emylee sought a healthier life by challenging her preconceived notions of what her body was capable of. She has student Kinesiology at USC before and is certified in ACE, CMTC, Myokinesis Integration and CrossFit L1.Here at Pharos e do a lot of lifting, we do a lot of moving, we do a lot of running, and we do a lot of boxing. And as we know, the more things we do, the more things we need to recover from. So for today's episode, we sit down with Emylee Covell and talk about the best ways to prepare for and to recover from activity in and out of the gym.Connect with Piet and PharosJoin The Limitless ChallengePiet's InstagramEmylee's InstagramPharos InstagramPharos Mountain Lodge InstagramWebsiteWelcome to the Pharos Fit Podcast. Today I speak with Maria Alcoke, a Mom, a creative, a business owner, and former CrossFit L1 trainer and pre and postnatal coach. Inspired by the pregnant and postpartum athletes she coached and inspired by her own experience as a pregnant and postpartum athlete, Maria ran her own postpartum return-to-fitness program out of CrossFit Cove in Columbia, Maryland.Fitness has always been a passion of hers, she loves people and learned through coaching and business how much she love working with women specifically. She was motivated to become a resource and support for women navigating pregnancy and the postpartum period once she became a Mom herself. She found motherhood to be overwhelming in so many ways and craved connection with other women with similar experiences. She realized the lack of resources in the women's health space - not only for athletes or women who wanted to return to fitness, but also in the mental health space. She knew I wanted to advocate, inspire and be a part of the shift in the space. We talk about:-returning to fitness after the first kid-finding a passion for coaching-fears of laboring with a second birth-fear mongering in return to exercise-caring for yourself after c-section-not being able to control everything -the importance of seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist-trusting your intuition Time Stamps1:00 introduction4:10 postpartum expectations versus reality11:00 fear mongering and harmful language18:45 benefits of telehealth20:50 biggest surprises as a mom and coach25:20 advice for moms returning to workouts30:00 vetting online advice and programsCONNECT WITH CARRIEIG: https://www.instagram.com/carriepagliano/Website: https://carriepagliano.comCONNECT WITH MARIAIG: https://www.instagram.com/maria.alcoke/Website: https://www.MariaVida.comThe Active Mom Postpartum Podcast is A Real Moms' Guide to Postpartum for active moms & the postpartum professionals who help them in their journey. Thank you for making the OCR Underground a training resource for your OCR success. This episode is jam packed with useful tips and strategies for your next obstacle course race. In the Inside Mike's Mind Segment, I share my key concept for staying injury free. We can't eliminate all injury risk, but there are some really simple things you can do to reduce your risk dramatically. If you frequently find yourself dealing with chronic injuries you will want to listen in. In my Research Review, I found a great article looking at hundreds of studies on static stretching. We have all bought into the idea that you should never static stretch before exercise, but is that really true. Like many things, it depends. I share when it may be appropriate and when it might not be. And finally I have an awesome interview with SGX Coach Francis Gennarelli from Mud Sweat Tears Crossfit in Verona, NJ. Francis Gennarelli, owner of Mud Sweat Tears / MST CrossFit in Verona, qualified and competed in all 3 Spartan Ultra World Championships in Iceland and Sweden taking 2nd place in his AG in 2019. Death Race finisher, Goruck Team Assessment finisher. CPT, Spartan SGX Coach, and CrossFit L1 trainer. In this interview I chat with Coach Francis on some of his keys to being successful from a mindset perspective and training perspective when planning for an Ultra Beast or if you are up for a Death Race. He shares why training just can't take place at the gym and your whole like becomes a training ground. There are some really great nuggets in this one from Coach Francis Gennarelli. full shownotes: www.ocrunderground.com/episode-78
I grew up playing a sport in every season, Football, Baseball, Track and excelled in swimming. After retiring from sports I stayed active for a while but, when life became about working and supporting a family fitness took a back seat and I became morbidly obese tipping the scales at over 500 lbs. After hitting a breaking point when my health became an issue, when I had a myopic flip (Meaning I woke up one day and my eyes weren't working right) It was this that helped me discover that I had become a type 2 diabetic. It was at this point I was looking for answers to get my health back and wasn't even sure it was possible. I ended up reaching out to my next door neighbor and unbeknownst to me, he was a CrossFit Coach. Together we worked to help me lose around 250lbs. I also earned my CrossFit L1 so I could begin coaching and helping people like I was helped and this also allowed me to be a judge and different events in the CrossFit space. I have volunteered as Security, Media Credentialing and athlete control in the past and this was a way to ramp up my involvement. This is still a constant battle for me, I suffered a back injury (not from CrossFit) and developed a leg condition where my veins where not pumping the blood back up my legs. This created depression and anxiety that sent me down the bad habit spiral I was on before eventually hitting 414 lbs before trying even more new tools to combat this. I was featured in a CrossFit Documentary Called "Wind of Change" that is available on YouTube, and since this aired I have sought counselling, speak with a Psychiatrist and hired a nutrition coach. This has all helped me turn things around and I have lost 26 lbs since hiring the nutrition coach I also host a successful podcast myself called the Clydesdale, Fitness & Friends that looks at the sport of fitness, interviewing CrossFit Athletes and talking about our own struggles with fitness and nutrition. We have listeners in 60 countries around the world and all 50 US States. Feeling pain doesn’t mean your body has failed. In fact, it signals a body doing its job by letting you know something’s up. By heeding its wise (if blunt) counsel, you can effectively identify and deal with the cause. For most of us, the natural response to pain signals is resistance—to push them away or deny that they even exist. Yet ignoring pain only serves to add an extra layer of angst to an already unpleasant situation. Not only do you still have the pain to deal with, but now you have to keep up the ruse that the pain isn’t really there. So for today's episode, we sit down with Emylee Covell and talk about the best ways to prepare for and to recover from activity in and out of the gym.Welcome to the Pharos Athletic Club podcast. Back when CrossFit® was a still budding grassroots community — and when the CrossFit Games took place on a dusty country ranch — Pat Barber made a name for himself as one of its early stars. He taught courses, created some of CrossFit HQ's earliest videos, and competed at the sport's highest levels in a time well before giant endorsement deals. (And live streaming? Forget about it.) Originally from California, Pat was one of the first big name CrossFit personalities to go international, where he played a massive role in growing the methodology and sport in New Zealand and Australia. These days, the 6-time CrossFit Games athlete and Level 4 CrossFit Trainer is still heavily active in the CrossFit community. (By his own estimate, Pat has put roughly 15,000 people through their CrossFit L1 certifications.) In addition to coaching seminars, Pat and his wife Taz run Warmup & Workout, a programming and coaching development platform for gyms around the globe.Pat's in a unique position to give thoughts on the past, present, and future of CrossFit both as a training methodology and sport. Though our conversation covered Pat's optimism for fitness moving forward, we also touch upon some important snags CrossFit — and other fitness methodologies — will continue to face as communities become enmeshed with their online counterparts.

Most endurance athletes are familiar with the concept of mobility as the body’s ability to move with control in its available range of motion. Yet many of us make the mistake of separating our mobility work from our strength training. How can we evaluate our current ability level and prevent injury by pairing the two together in an intelligent way? Travis Jewett is a strength coach and chiropractor in Northwest Iowa who incorporates the principles of strength and conditioning into his clinical work, addressing the source of his clients’ pain and helping them create better movement. He is a sought-after lecturer with MobilityWOD, giving talks worldwide on athlete assessment, biomechanics and self-care. Travis is StrongFirst-certified in barbells and kettlebells, and he is a CrossFit L1. Today, Travis explains how his approach to strength and conditioning has changed over the years. He discusses the role of a traditional chiropractor and describes how his practice differs from your average practitioner. Travis offers insight around patients suffering from back pain, sharing his take on non-incident related pain and the high prevalence of back injury. Aaron Davis is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), USA Weightlifting-L1 Sports Performance Coach, USA Level II Track and Field Coach, CrossFit L1. He has 10 years experience coaching athletes and teams. Aaron is passionate about understanding health, sports performance, and helping people. In this episode, Aaron shares how his company, Train. Adapt. Evolve. came to be, heart rate variability, stress, and more.
Today’s guest is Aaron Davis, sports performance and health coach at Train Adapt Evolve. I first discovered Aaron’s work after reading his piece on arterial occlusion and tempo vs. circuit training prescriptions which sparked a huge interest in the topic on my own end. Aaron’s work is first class, and his knowledge of physiology and athlete adaptations is second to none in a field where coaches are quick to copy and paste the trendy workout template, but less willing to dig into why one athlete might respond well to longer sprint work, while others flounder with this workload. Aaron has been a head collegiate track and field coach, and switched over the private industry afterwards, where he now uses technology to optimize training adaptations for athletic populations. He also has a deep interest in human health and function. Today on the podcast, Aaron and I cover topics ranging from muscle length-tension relationships, to muscle occlusion trends in sprinting and strength, to muscle hypertrophy ideals and training cycle planning. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Aaron’s background The importance of muscle length-tension relationships in speed and strength expression Deep squats vs. partial high tension movements in power and elastic expression of strength Occlusion and bloodflow trends, and individualizing speed-endurance work based on response Strength training in light of oxygen desaturated situations How max strength, hypertrophy and speed fit together in training Ideas on fast-twitch hypertrophy in training Enzymatic adaptations to speed-endurance training Eyeball tests to determine oxygen deprivation in workouts Quotes “We have to improve tension in certain ranges to improve stiffness at maximal velocity” “(Regarding altering length-tension relationships) Intensive isometrics are kind of my go-to, or eccentrics in certain ranges” “I think owning and learning certain positions, and having strength in certain positions can only do good, for sure” “What kind of stress reaction are we creating if athletes are occluding all the time. If you occlude, that means while you are doing work, you are not getting the free fresh blood into the muscle” “How can we get in and out (of a workout) without causing that much damage… that’s how I look at it with using the MOXY (blood occlusion monitor)” “One of the hardest things with endurance athletes is to try to teach them to desaturate” “Generally, all the greats have (max strength, speed, hypertrophy) going at the same time, in some form or fashion” “You should see this occlusion trend somewhere above 75%, if their slow twitch it might be a little bit higher, if their fast twitch, you might see it a little bit sooner on, that percent scale per their 1RM” “When we think of tension we think of a bracing tension, but we want a fluid tension that relaxes just as quick as it contracts” “Speed-endurance allows certain sodium potassium pumps to regulate the cellular environment under certain stressors a lot better” About Aaron Davis Aaron Davis is a Sports Performance/Health Coach with 10 years experience coaching athletes and teams across multiple sports. Utilizing multiple diagnostic technologies and labs, Davis firmly believes health and performance go hand in hand. He is a constant student of sports performance and health – drawing upon knowledge from leading experts in the field. Davis coaches athletes in the Austin, Texas area as well as international and US athletes remotely. He shares his experiences and training philosophy speaking at seminars and writing for Train. Adapt. Evolve. Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), USA Weightlifting-L1 Sports Performance Coach, USA Level II Track and Field Coach, CrossFit L1
This week on the podcast we have Pat Barber!! We talk about a lot of stuff like; Coaching vs. Programming, Intentionally Building the Next Generation, Competing at a High level, and Being a Badass Dad with Pat Barber. Here's a quick bio Pat Wrote: Back in 2003, I was working as a room service attendant at a Santa Cruz hotel and deciding what to do with myself. I decided to apply to be a sheriff, however at the same time, I was also getting pretty pumped about this workout thing I was doing called CrossFit. Later, I would fail the oral interview portion of the sheriff’s exam because they thought I was more interested in CrossFit than joining the police force. I was bummed and stunned at the time but in retrospect, I think they were right. My real journey with CrossFit began shortly after that when I got hired to work for CrossFit.com filming and editing video. I would later make my way from behind the camera to in front of it, coaching, and training in many of the early CrossFit.com videos. In 2008, at the Aromas Ranch, I competed in my first CrossFit Games. Since then, I’ve competed in the Games 6 times, helped my wife run the first CrossFit affiliate in New Zealand, and returned to the States to help Jason Khalipa grow and lead the NorCal empire. I have also continued to train and develop coaches for NorCal CrossFit and as part of the L1 and L2 staff for CrossFit.com; in fact, I’ve helped about 15,000 people through their CrossFit L1’s over the past several years. So, as you can see, my experiences with CrossFit have been varied… a little of this and a little of that… I’m an athlete, a Level 4 Coach, a media guy, and the Head of Coaching Development at Norcal CrossFit. I’m also a husband and father who loves surfing, Magic: The Gathering, potato chips and hanging with my boy in his Batman fort. I do not love L-Sits. Or cooked lemons.

Sam Brumenschenkel is a behavior therapist and co-owner of CrossFit Port Orange with her husband, Kyle. Nicole Marchand is a Registered Dietitian in Florida, where box owners can't legally prescribe a diet without the oversight of an RD. Before the conversation started, I mentioned two great ideas from other affiliate owners: Butch Santucci uses the Meijer grocery "curb" service in Michigan. Butch owns Wreck Room CrossFit. Jennifer Broxterman is the owner of NutritionRx, and her husband Dave owns CrossFit London. Her "Healthy Meal Exchange Group" is described here. You can download instructions to run the program in YOUR box free here: Healthy-Meal-Exchange-Group When Sam and her husband Kyle learned about the Stratified Model through Two-Brain Business: Grow Your Gym (Volume 1) and the mentoring program, they decided nutrition was their best path to increase ARM...but in Florida, legal hurdles stopped her from using her Precision Nutrition certification with her clients. "I wanted a program that I could implement immediately that I couldn't mess up." Sam found Nicole Marchand, a CrossFit L1 trainer and owner of My Healthy Steps, when Nicole visited CrossFit Port Orange. Using Sam's understanding of behavior modification and Nicole's huge knowledge base, they built a program for the box. This week I interviewed Pat "Manimal" Barber. I'm not sure exactly where he got that nickname, maybe because he's so hairy. Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this one. Pat is one of the OG Crossfit Games Competitors. He has competed for several years as an individual and the last two years on NorCal Crossfit team. The most interesting part of this interview for me was talking to Pat about developing coaches. Pat has been on the Crossfit L1 staff for years and has taught L2s and other seminars. He talks about how you can become a better coach and get the most out of your athletes. We also talk about his new company Warmup and Workout, which is his answer to the issue of affiliate programming. He and his wife Taz create detailed lesson plans (Session plans as they call it) for every single day. It allows affiliates to focus on teaching and growing the community rather than wasting time making programs.
