“The little things that I could sort of blow off and not pay attention to when I was 35, I absolutely have to pay attention to now. So that's I think the only thing for me that's changed in the last 15 years is I can't screw around with the small stuff anymore. It's all big stuff.” - Dede GriesbauerToday's guest is Dede Griesbauer, one of the most remarkable triathletes competing today. After speaking with Dede, it's very clear that her longevity in the triathlon is fueled by her passion for the sport and the lifestyle that comes with it. It was so refreshing to speak about her many years of competing at such a high level and her recent world record in the Ultraman Florida event in 2020. This was a conversation where we got to explore the important role things like passion, curiosity and setting the right expectations play when it comes to optimizing athletic performance. The big takeaway, however, may be how those three things contribute significantly to the joy you experience on a daily basis throughout your journey to your own personal greatness. Without a doubt, there's a lot of lessons to gain from this conversation and we can't wait to have you listen and be inspired by the insights Dede is so open to sharing with others.Timestamped Show Notes(3:42) The similarities between Boulder and Stanford…(6:36) The power of a team, a community, and a supportive environment…(8:18) Goal-setting through the years…(11:40) A bucket list of events and discovering new challenges…(18:19) Thoughts on curiosity in the sport… “When I got home, I was told I'd never run again. And I had to literally learn how to walk again without a limp. So when you talk about curiosity, I was like, “Well, first of all, I want to be able to walk again because that's kind of important.” But then I got curious, when the guy told me I'd never run again, I was like, “Mm. Uh uh. Nope. You're wrong.” And so then it became, “How far can I get with this?””(20:10) Working through goals and the pressures on the newer generations of athletes…(23:31) “I just truly loved the sport so much. And that makes me happy. Like I've had friends and training partners that find motivation from the fact that if they don't win this race, they can't pay their rent. And for me, that would kill me. That kind of motivation doesn't serve me at all.”(25:33) Dede's number one pet peeve…(29:23) Focusing on ALL the little things…(34:26) Staying power requires attention to the details… “You're not going to be 24 forever. And the sooner you learn these lessons, the better. If you're this good now, think about how good you could be if you paid attention to this other stuff.”(36:48) An exhausting and unsustainable approach…(38:28) Chasing happiness instead of results…(40:13) Thoughts on coaching…(44:24) “I think there's gotta be a partnership where you trust enough in your coach and their philosophy and what they're doing and why they're doing it the way they're doing it. Will Clarke has been one of Great Britain’s most successful triathletes. From World U23 Champion, to Olympic Games, to 7.45 Ironman performances, he’s been at the top of the sport since 2002. He’s decided to step back from international pro racing in 2020. We catch up with Will to hear the story of his 2019 season, including his early season successes at Outlaw Half, 70.3 Staffs and Ironman Brazil, through to his 25th place at Hawaii and decision to retire from Pro racing. He talks about training with Patrick Lange in the run up to Hawaii, the frustrations of poor kit constraints due to sponsors, and ultimately his move to coaching, with his successes with Ruth Purbrook winning the overall AG race in Hawaii. He also tells us about his plans for 2020, and his new race team Riot Racing.Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Sarah Piampiano just finished 2nd at Ironman Hamburg with another amazing run - a 2.56 on a really hot day, which was only a couple of minutes down on the fastest male run times. We got this interview in the can just before the race. She set Ironman Brazil on fire with her win in 2019, when she delivered a 4.43 bike backed by a 2.53 marathon. To put this in context, her marathon was faster than the men's winner, and only 2 male pro's ran faster! We hear all about her background - from an overworked banker putting in 100 hour weeks, sleeping under her desk and smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day who entered her first triathlon as a bet! She talks honestly about the changes she's made over the last year to regain her love of the sport after feeling really burned out - we get some great insight into the nutritional changes she's made to stop 'restricting calories' and to start 'maximising nutritional value' from her food.As she says at the end of the interview - 'We only live once.' :)Show Sponsors:http://team.oxygenaddict.com - You can download a free copy of the Team Oxygenaddict Race Review Document here: http://bit.ly/racereviewdocument If you feel you’ve not had the race you deserved or expected this weekend- Coach Rob has a couple of free skype consultation slots available this week, where you can talk through your results with him. Our interview this week is with Tim O'Donnell. We have a lot of questions for T.O. about how the prep for Kona is going this year, what it's like balancing the roles of a professional triathlete, husband and relatively new father, we'll talk about the Tim and Rinny You Tube Channel is going, and how his and Rinny's races have gone this year. Thanks to last week's guests, Simone Cordrey-Cotter to talk about Rudy Project's "Podium One" and Alison Freeman of D3 Multisport who talked about how to train for and race in hot conditions. If you missed it, go back and listen to episode #134. Hopefully you are fast enough to win a Boost 01 helmet, but if you're not get a Boost 01 like me and you'll be faster. Being fast on the bike might not be enough in hot conditions. We had lots of great tips on how to be ready for your next hot race. Announcement: Last Friday was Bill's birthday and we did not give him a birthday shout out. Bill, this is your belated birthday shout out! Not that you care because you are having a blast in Canada Salmon fishing! Last week we gave a shout out to Kim Miller. There is no "Kim" Miller. There is however an "Amy" Miller. I have no good explanation for how that happened. It was in the show notes incorrectly despite having previously connected with Amy on Facebook and Instagram. She sent me a very nice message last Monday bringing the error to my attention and immediately I had a flashback to the thought occurring to me on Saturday night. It's funny how the subconscious knew there was something wrong when it hadn't occurred to me consciously. Interview: Timothy O’Donnell is one of the world’s most successful and experienced American long-course triathletes. As a professional, he has earned 50+ podium finishes including over 22 wins at major events throughout the world. Among the wins are nine Ironman 70.3 victories, three 140.6 wins, and six Armed Forces National Championships. At the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, Timothy finished 6th in 2016, 3rd in 2015, and 5th in 2013, finishing as top American in 2013 & 2015. In 2013, he tied the existing American IRONMAN record with an 8:01:32 victory at IRONMAN Brazil. In 2015 at IRONMAN Brazil, he completed his fastest IRONMAN to date at 7:55:56. He was the IRONMAN 70.3 US Pro Champion in 2012 and the IRONMAN US Pro Champion in 2011. O’Donnell’s sporting career began when he joined his first swim team at the age of five in Roseville, CA. He began to shine in the pool during his high school years while attending Wyoming Seminary Prep (SEM) in Kingston, Pennsylvania. At SEM O’Donnell was captain of the varsity swim team, set multiple school records and earned repeated district championships and all-state honors. O’Donnell then attended the United States Naval Academy (BS Naval Architecture, 2003) where he swam on the Varsity team for two seasons before fully committing to the sport of triathlon. As a triathlete, O’Donnell led the Naval Academy Men’s Team to two US National Triathlon Championship titles. He attended UC Berkeley (MSEng Ocean Engineering, 2005) as a Navy Ensign during which time he won the 2003 U.S. Under-23 National Championships and his first of six consecutive Armed Forces Triathlon Championships. In 2007 O’Donnell was assigned to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He earned spots on the US National Team and World Championships Team in 2007 and 2008,was the ITU Long Distance World Champion in 2009, and was named USAT’s Non-Drafting Triathlete of the Year in 2009, 2010, and 2015. A lot of triathletes (pro and age groupers) are using cbd to help with inflammation and recovery. WADA and USADA removed CBD from the banned substances list. If you are using a CBD product from a reliable source like iKOR labs, you don't have to worry about being testing positive for a banned or illegal substance.
