Kelly Starrett, a doctor of physical therapy, has trained professional athletes, Olympians, and military special operators, helping them unlock peak performance. But as he approached his fifties, he started to see cracks appearing in the health of the folks around him. What had worked for his peers in their 20s and 30s, wasn't working anymore; they were gaining weight, having surgeries, and just didn't feel good.So he and his wife and fellow trainer, Juliet, decided to write a book — Built to Move: The Ten Essential Habits to Help You Move Freely and Live Fully — that took all that they've learned from training elite performers and distilled it into the foundational practices that everyone, at every age, can use to develop lasting mobility, durability, and all-around health. Today on the show, Kelly unpacks some of those essential physical habits, sharing the “vital signs” — tests that will help you assess how you're doing in that area — as well as daily practices that will help you strengthen and improve that capacity.Resources Related to the PodcastKelly's previous appearance on the AoM podcast — Episode #213: Undoing the Damage of Chronic SittingAoM article on the Sitting-Rising TestAoM Article: 7 Simple Exercises That Undo the Damage of Sitting (including the Couch Stretch)AoM article on foam rollingAoM Article: The Benefits of Hanging for Strength and MobilityAoM Article: 12 Balance Exercises You Can Do on a 2×4AoM Podcast #638: How Changing Your Breathing Can Change Your LifeAoM Podcast #678: Physical Benchmarks Every Man Should Meet, At Every AgeMuscles and Meridians: The Manipulation of Shape by Phillip BeachVideo of Kelly demonstrating the Couch StretchVideo of Kelly demonstrating the squat testVideo of 90/90 sit/stretchVideo of Chris Hinshaw demonstrating the Old Man Balance TestGet yourself a pull-up barThe SlackBlockKelly's article on fixing shoulder pain, including a video on the Shoulder Spin-UpConnect With Kelly StarrettThe Ready State website, including the Built to Move book pageThe Ready State on IGKelly on Twitter

This is the second and final highlights episode featuring some of the best clips from our guests during 2023. Part 1 was last week in case you missed it and is well worth a listen when you get a chance. In this week's episode you'll hear from guests such as Rugby League legend Jamie Peacock, CrossFit greats Sam Briggs and Brent Fikoswi, the incredibly knowledgeable Dr Phil Price, World Champion Hunter McIntyre, Ironman triathlete Joe Skipper, endurance coach Chris Hinshaw and many more. That list of guests include people I could never have imagined I'd be able to get on to the show when we started out but we did, and they absolutely delivered when they came on - and Im so pleased and proud Ive been able to share those conversations with you. There is a tonne of great stuff in this I promise you, and it will, I think, be a timeless episode that you can listen to again and again, and always take something new away from it.
In this week's episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast my guest is the brilliant Chris Hinshaw. Chris is a world-renowned endurance coach and founder of aerobiccapacity.com, with years of experience in CrossFit, Ironman competitions, and coaching elite athletes. He has helped coach some of the biggest names in CrossFit including Mat Fraser, Rich Froning, and Tia Clair Toomey. Beyond CrossFit, Chris has also coached Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champions, Olympians, FBI and military personnel, firefighters and other professionals. In addition to his coaching, Chris was an elite athlete in his own right (which included a second-place finish at the Ironman World Championships). It's fair to say this man knows his stuff and it was an honour to be able to chat with him. We cover so much – running training for HYROX, the mental side of sport, his thoughts around HYROX in general, why many people get their warmup wrong, what separates some of the top athletes of all time – like Mat Fraser – with others, and lots more. It was a brilliant chat and I think there's a huge amount you can take away from this.

Are you ready to take it to the limit to win? Do you even truly know where the limit is? Have you been there, tested it, and fought through the pain, only to make sure you could go there again. But the next time you'll have the confidence to go there and even further? Our limit isn't a sustainable pace, but it is a place we need to be comfortable working in. Endurance Coach Chris Hinshaw joined Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff on the back of the US Army Fitness Truck at 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games for a discussion on the lifetime of work it takes to build capacity and create the adaptations in your body needed to perform with the best. Chris is the founder of Aerobic Capacity, a 10x Ironman Competitor, and one of the world's top endurance coaches having coached 35 CrossFit Games Champions, the US Military, and professional and olympic athletes to the podium. Chis and Fran nerd out on pushing the boundaries of your lactic threshold and how getting comfortable in that "death zone” must be embraced if you expect to win against the world's best. Jessie pushes Chris on mastering the art of establishing a breathing cadence, pacing yourself effectively, and understanding how rest between intervals is just as important as the work put in during the sets. Zone two training has done the rounds and is gaining much attention from the competitive scene. CrossFit, being an “endurance sport”, is an idea that is gaining popularity, and big names like Mat Fraser and Chris Hinshaw talking about the importance of low-intensity endurance work has made this training type of training pretty popular recently. But is it effective for improving someone's endurance for metcons and typical CrossFit? It could be what a powerful and fast twitch athlete needs, but it might also be like trying to get a stronger squat by just doing accessory work. Flux training is an approach to interval training that is more flexible, emphasising rolling on and off of higher and lower intensity paces, which captures the sports-specific pacing of CrossFit quite well. The circuit nature of CrossFit usually entails that pacing is more variable and less consistent than your usual endurance event, and this is something that flux training embraces. Check out this episode for why flux training might be a better option than traditional intervals. Specifically, this protocol is designed to help athletes improve their ability to recover during and after a workout so that they can increase their overall capacity to do work. The 3 must measure metrics to get the most of your practices!I have been involved in accelerated learning and performance for many years, and now the greatest movement that I can suggest to people is to make sure they are using the right metrics for their goals. Very often, people make the mistake of confusing their goals for the actual actions they also need to take.Do you have a mastery goal?1 - What action are you going to take? Did I do it?This is a quantity measurement; more often it is a binary measurement of "yes" or "no".Life gets in the way sometimes, and that’s ok. But being honest with yourself is super important too. A very simple question that you can’t cheat is simply “did I do it?”Allowing for flexibility of whether it is 5 mins or 5 hours, the simple question of “did I do it?” is enough for us to own our actions. This is usually a simple matter of scheduling a certain number of ‘doing sessions’ per week.Example time: Imagine you want to improve your cardio or learn a language, the simple question of “Did I do 3 cardio sessions this week?” or “Did I do 3 language learning sessions?” is exactly what we must measure. Once we comply with our intention, we can start fine-tuning the details. For now, we want to show ourselves we can commit to actions and create change2 - How did I do it?This is a quality measurement, more often we can measure multiple things here to define our quality.Once committed to your activities and showing yourself and others that you are doing this (which changes your beliefs about yourself and others’ beliefs about you too, which in turn influences how you see yourself, for more info, research the Pygmalian effect.), then you can begin the ‘tweaking’ process whereby we ask the question of “How should I really be spending my time?”Example time: For the cardio program, most people would think that measuring heart rate would be the best, it isn’t. Measuring distance, time, and rest periods allow you to track your pace (for more info, please research Chris Hinshaw). How far did you go? How long did it take to do that distance? How much rest did you have in the session? Changing any of these key elements to suit your feelings on the day can greatly help you in being compliant.3 - How do I feel about it?This is an emotional metric, based on our perception of our activity. What is our confidence level? Are we satisfied with our process? our sessions? If our confidence is strong but our performance is not consistent or good quality, especially over time, then we can see a misalignment, usually a compensation for value. Coaching around this calls us to unpack and see true value.Whilst if our confidence is low but our consistency and performance are high, then we also see a misalignment, usually a modesty compensation or a self-doubt trauma.Coaching around this helps us build confidence through and because of action taken, being mindful never to add too much difficulty to any single point because that can be detrimental to building confidence. So the 3 must metrics to measure are:1 - Did I do it? Quantity metric2 - How did I do it? Quality metric3 - How do I feel about it? Perception metricHaving these metrics and preparing your actions in advance, preparing for a relapse to your more automatic/ regular behaviors and differentiating between ‘activation’ or starting phases, and ‘maintenance’ or normal phases, is very important for managing change and to not be overwhelmed by the transformation we wish to see.Let me know your experiences with these metrics!“The process is the goal.”―Geneen Roth Get full access to Thought Architecture at thoughtarchitecture.substack.com/subscribe

Chris Hinshaw stops by for a multifaceted and inspiring conversation about the interesting progression of his career, what led him to discover an entirely new perspective on fitness, and the turning point conversations he had with mentors that were instrumental in guiding him towards his path. Things also get a little science-y and technical as we hear about all that he has learned from his current position as one of the leading Crossfit coaches in the world. Known internationally for his extensive knowledge and practical experience developing aerobic capacity in athletes of all experience levels using his comprehensive, cutting edge approach to training, Chris is widely considered one of the top endurance coaches in the world and is the founder of aerobiccapacity.com. TIMESTAMPS: Brad introduces his guest who has a very interesting story to tell about how he got into coaching CrossFit champions. [01:30] Chris describes how a new and different shoe brought him back to serious running. [07:12] What kind of concessions do we need to make as we age and yet want to keep running? [10:15] There is much to worry about as you get older as far as athletic performance. [14:04] Chris's history with the Ironman is epic and then evolved into CrossFit. [19:17] Because he had neglected muscles by just exclusively doing triathlon, he was advised to try CrossFit. It gave him his health back. [28:12] Your body may break down but your brain may still tell you you can do it. [31:56] Making a career change was a risk but the right thing to do. [44:57] How did Chris's method fix the missing piece in CrossFit training? It starts with pacing. [51:52] CrossFit is for people who weren't good at anything. [55:41] Chris Hinshaw has changed the sport of CrossFit. The people who are interested in CrossFit have disparate goals. He personalizes it for them. [58:17] What is a standard rate of fatigue for a non-runner? [01:02:05] Some people perform CrossFit at a high level and too frequently. That is not beneficial in the long run. [01:12:51] The high intensity creates that fatigue, the low intensity clears the fatigue. In this episode, I sat down with Chris Hinshaw - coach to hundreds of athletes around the world, most notably the top finishers at the CrossFit Games the past several years. He's coached Mat Fraser, Rich Froning, Katrín Davíðsdóttir... the list goes on. We talk about how he started coaching all of these wonderful athletes and how he had to prove himself to get there. You'll quickly see why Chris is a thought-leader in the aerobic/endurance arena - he's a wealth of knowledge and never stops learning. His attention to detail is really what blew my mind and made me want to start intentionally tracking my fitness progress to improve and get better. In our chat, we spoke about how Chris tested a new carbon fiber sole from Adidas. Here are the results of his test using the data collected from his Garmin watch.Links:http://aerobiccapacity.com/Aerobic Capacity on InstagramChris Hinshaw's Personal InstagramAdidas Carbon Plate ShoeGarmin Running Watch
“I can say with probably 99% [certainty], I would never be at the Games if it weren't for my mental coach. I think I would be good but I would've gotten fourth place instead of third place at the 2014 Regionals, and who knows what would've happened after that, but I think that was the edge that I had in my training. I was not better physically than any of the other girls there, I just performed when I had to and when the pressure was at its highest. And I think that's what kept me in the game for all these years, too. I perform at Regionals every single year. If you looked on paper, my stats are not super good compared to a lot of the other athletes, but I am able to PR. I've PR'd my snatch in every single Regional since I started. I am able to perform when it really, really matters. And that's the difference, that's where the mental training comes in.” - Kristin Holte Over the last 8 years, Kristin Holte has been quietly climbing her way to the top of the CrossFit Games leaderboard. A native of Oslo, Norway, Kristin grew up in an active household and competed in a variety of sports, including gymnastics, track and field, soccer, triathlons and cross country skiing. The work capacity and discipline she developed in her youth would help lay the groundwork for her success as a CrossFit Games athlete, where she is known to excel at endurance events and gymnastics movements. Kristin has competed at last 6 CrossFit Games, never placing outside the top 20. After spending two years in 7th place, Kristin knew she wanted to go from good to great. She doubled down, surrounded herself with a team of coaches, and addressed as many nuances in her training, nutrition, and recovery as possible. The attention to detail paid off with a second place podium finish at the 2019 CrossFit Games in Madison. Her third place finish in the 2020 CrossFit Games Open earned her an invitation to this year's Games, and Kristin is excited to return to the Ranch to continue to put her training to the test. Since qualifying for her first Regional, Kristin has also put a tremendous amount of focus into training her mind and credits her competitive edge to her mental game. With the help of a mental coach, she has improved her confidence and her ability to perform at her best under pressure by using a variety of exercises including an intensive training camps, visualization, mantras, and more. Kristin and I first competed alongside each other at the 2014 CrossFit Games, where as a rookie she took an event win in Triple 3. I was excited to catch up with her to learn more about her mental training game, how she continues to improve as a competitor year after year, and why she believes that when it comes to training volume and intensity, sometimes less is more. In this episode we discuss: How Kristin's training and day-to-day life has been impacted by coronavirus Her thoughts on the CrossFit Games being hosted at the Ranch, and how she's preparing for the Rogue Invitational What it was like growing up in Norway How Kristin found CrossFit The importance of using a mental coach for her training Exercises Kristin does with her coach to improve her mental game Overcoming a lung injury and realizing the impact of her mental training Her experience making the podium at the Games Her mindset after placing second at the 2019 CrossFit Games Where Kristin is at in her recovery process from a wrist surgery for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome The factors that have played into her ability to improve every year The key people on Kristin's team Why she uses a nutritionist even though she's a nutritionist herself How she's preserving her longevity in the sport Her proudest CrossFit accomplishments What Kristin enjoys when she's not training Her outlook for her career and future Three things Kristin does on a regular basis that have the biggest positive impact on her health One thing she thinks could have a big impact on her health, but she has a hard time implementing What a healthy life looks like to Kristin You can follow Kristin on Instagram and Facebook. The endurance coach behind CrossFit Games Champions Rich Froning, Matt Fraser, Tia-Claire Toomey, Katrin Davidstotter and 30 CrossFit Games Champions in totals joins the show. Chris Hinshaw has recently made his name as The Endurance Authority in the world of CrossFit in the last decade, but he has been a master of all things Aerobic Capacity long before his most recent rise to prominence. Following a career that saw him earn the honors of All American as a swimmer in College, Chris went on to compete as a World Class Professional Tri-Athlete. A 10x Iron Man Competitor, Chris had many notable finishes including a 2nd place overall finish at the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships.
