But it wasn't always wine and roses. A lifetime of athletic endeavors combined with a tough-as-nails job hit him with some debilitating physical issues - some so bad that at their worst he could barely sleep.  Listen in as we talk about his origin story, his journey to kettlebells, and his triumphal ride out of pain and discomfort and into strength, resilience, and physical domination.

Show Summary (This episode took place behind the walls at the Kyle Unit, in Kyle, Texas) . I met Chas at the Hughes unit several years ago and if you had told me then that I'd be interviewing him on the Kyle unit for a podcast that is listened to all over the world, I would've laughed.  . I watched Chas play and he was pretty good. Then I watched the behavior of the players on the court, especially when a call didn't go their way. It was remarkable. Then after the game I watched as the players went into a room to recover, got something to drink, and heard a devotional. Then I had heard that some of the spurs organization was involved.  . David Robinson sent these guys a video message about the tournament. That's awesome. . I knew then that God had a huge call on Chas's life.  . Then one day out here I ran into two guys at a conference and one of them was Chas's father. Incredible. Chas was also instrumental in bringing a CrossFit competition to the Hughes unit. Tim Tebow also visited and was going to compete against Chas in a push up contest but Chas offered another guy in his place.  . Chas's story is a tragic one, but as you'll hear in the interview, God has and still is  turning it into something beautiful. His young life was torn apart by divorce, then he was driving home one day and hit someone. He lost his mother to cancer while in prison, BUT God. . When I heard Chas was part of a unique inmate counselor program and was placed a the Kyle unit and wanted some speakers, I jumped. Then I asked permission from Warden Luna if could interview Kyle for the podcast. He said yes.  . This interview takes place in the visitation room at the Kyle unit. There's absolutely no sound absorbing areas in there so the audio is as good as we could get it. You'll hear prison doors opening and closing in the background. And right after the interview I got to witness something amazing. I got to see Chas present a certificate to men who had completed the Pillars class and were about to be free men. Some of them may already be out but I wanted to shout out to some of the men who I had the honor of meeting that day.  . Big thanks to Warden Luna and his staff at the Kyle unit as well as MTC for making this happen.  . Chas, you impressed me when I first me you man and you're still going strong. Prison isn't breaking you like it does some, it is absolutely making you. Making you into the man of God you were always meant to be. It was an honor to interview you and hear your story. I know we didn't get to talk about everything but we will do a round two. I love they way you honor God and all the people in your life like your mom, your kids, their mother, your dad, your aunt. I'm proud to know you and be your friend bro. It was fun breaking bread (cookies) with you guys and It was great getting stuck in count with y'all at the end. Stay strong my friend.  . And oh, you caught me off guard with your presentation to me. I wasn't expecting that. Y'all, I'm a sports fan. I love my teams, but I'm a sports fan first. Chas was given three game nets from the Spurs playoffs. He gave one to his son, the other to his daughter, and then that day he gave the third one to me. It was on the east goal against the Grizzlies in 2016. Craziest best gift I've ever received. I'll post of pic on the show page. Thank you Chas. It'll be proudly displayed on my sports wall in my gym.  . In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I interviewed CrossFit Games coach, Matt Torres. We talked about all things relevant to getting maximum performance out of an athlete. We talked about setting expectations, programming, improving weakness, and adapting scope throughout the training season. Matt talked about his approach to mentality and recovery, and event-to-event strategy.  Coach Matt Torres is a Jack of all Trades in sports and fitness. Growing up, his passion for sports helped him earn a scholarship to play division one college football at Central Michigan University from 2006-2011. He was a wide receiver at CMU and played with some top-notch athletes, such as Antonio Brown (Steelers), Joe Staley (49ers), Eric Fisher (Chiefs), Frank Zombo (Chiefs), and Jahleel Addae (Chargers). After college, he and his colleague Dario Aviles found CrossFit in Naples and loved everything about it. What began as a motivation for fitness rapidly grew and transformed into a real business as they opened the doors of North Naples CrossFit in 2013. Since 2018, he has worked with Brute Strength, where he has helped several athletes reach their goals of making it to the CrossFit Games, including:  Jason Carroll, Dallin Pepper, Tudor Magda, Emma Cary, Fee Saghafi, James Sprague, and Phil Toon. Building yourself up physically (packing on muscle, getting stronger, becoming faster and more powerful, etc.) is a concept you'll hear us preach about at Rebel quite a bit. The type of strength we aren't coaching on a typical day is the strength that you can't physically see – the spiritual strength that exists on the inside. This is why I wanted to have Michael Cazayoux on the podcast to unpack his health and fitness journey because he brings a ton of important information to the table that I think goes unnoticed in our industry. From winning multiple team titles at the CrossFit Games, to working as a strength and conditioning coach for LSU, to co-owning a fitness company, Brute Strength, to running Working Against Gravity with his wife, to now running Soul Searching Adventures where he takes groups of men out on epic outdoor adventures to do deep introspective work together... All to say, Michael's lived and learned a lot.  The meat and potatoes of our conversation are surrounding fitness, health, and strength and how the three have evolved with him over time. We've all have had moments of reflection where we feel lost when transitioning from one phase of life to another, especially when our health and wellness are involved. Listen in to hear Michael unpack what it means to have an identity shift, what that actually looks like for a former athlete, and exercises you can do to become more intentional and gain insight for yourself. What You'll Learn in this Episode: [08:07] The story behind how Michael got started with Soul Searching Adventures [09:22] How Michael thinks about health and fitness today compared to earlier days as a strength and conditioning coach and while competing in CrossFit [12:27] The identify shift you experience when you stop being a high-level, competitive athlete [13:21] The new values Michael has on fitness [17:48] Being self aware enough when your goals and priorities have shifted from one phase to the next [19:27] What it means to transcend something [20:36] The ability to get out and express yourself in nature [22:31] Using physical challenges to gain insight in other areas of life [23:41] Two challenges for a former athlete in a reflective space [25:37] Exercises to become more intentional and feel more comfortable in reflection [31:24] Michael's main goal to deliver in his Soul Searching Adventures Links: Explore our free training samples here: https://www.rebel-performance.com/training-templates/ (https://www.rebel-performance.com/training-templates/) Follow Michael Cazayoux here: https://www.instagram.com/michaelcazayoux/ (https://www.instagram.com/michaelcazayoux/) Follow James Cerbie here: https://www.instagram.com/jamescerbie/ (https://www.instagram.com/jamescerbie/) Check out Michael's podcast here: https://apple.co/3tI0a42 (https://apple.co/3tI0a42) Subscribe to Michael's newsletter here: https://mcaz.substack.com/ (https://mcaz.substack.com/) Check out Soul Searching Adventures here: https://soulsearchingadventures.com (https://soulsearchingadventures.com) Follow Rebel here: https://www.instagram.com/therebelperformance/ (https://www.instagram.com/therebelperformance/) Join our Rebel FB group here: https://bit.ly/3KfGk6A (https://bit.ly/3KfGk6A) Want to learn more about the Rebel Performance Training Team?
