Somehow almost a full year has passed since Covid has entered our lives, and although the vaccine is certainly some much needed good news, especially coming at a time of rising cases and hospitalizations, the vaccine comes along with its own set of challenges. The primary question being, who should get the vaccine first and what should be the hierarchy of recipients as the vaccine is rolled out over the next few months? An example of this that hit close to home for a lot of us was the story that broke this week about the Parcare Community Health Network, which serves predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in and around NYC. While current NY regulations state that only frontline healthcare workers and nursing home residents and staff are currently eligible to receive the vaccine, Parcare was administering vaccines to many people not in these categories, including some prominent modern Orthodox Rabbis. This week, we ask, what happened there? And how should we be making decisions about prioritization of vaccination? News of the Final Solution reached the west in 1942. As the horrifying reality became apparent, reactions varied both among the general public as well as within the Jewish community. While the American Government refused to relax its rigid immigration quotas, US Jewry debated as to the proper course of action. Would it be a passive acceptance of US policy, a diplomatic attempt to reach the corridors of power, or possibly an outright public protest at how little was being done for the plight of European Jewry. Prominent rescue activist Peter Bergson arranged together with the Vaad Hatzalah, an unprecedented public gathering, so unique in the annals of American Jewish History, that it would garner the publicity needed to effect change in the Governments public policy. A group of over 400 recognizably Orthodox Rabbis would march on Washington, petitioning Congress and the President to do more for Jewish refugees. On October 6, 1943, three days before Yom Kippur, the Rabbis marched. He is he says, on a mission from God, Robert Berman’s lifelong campaign for organ donation to be permissible under Jewish/Talmudic law – Halacha – is at the centre of an ongoing debate in Israel. Berman, a Harvard University graduate, is striving to change attitudes to the donating of organs and possibly redefine the strict and ancient definition of death. Berman has been referred to as “the murderer” as he continues to promote donor cards to this traditional community. Berman’s campaign has left him at loggerheads with Orthodox Rabbis, who view him with outright suspicion and as an outsider who wants to reform Talmudic decrees. Lipika Pelham meets Berman in Jerusalem discussing his belief that the Torah promotes all selfless acts, including specifically consensual live organ donor ship. She takes to the street of Jerusalem amongst the religious Jews to explore with the faithful their attitudes to donating and receiving organs and whether there is a chance that the rules over when a person is dead can be altered to make donation allowable under Talmudic law. It’s our ‘Chai’ episode! We started it off talking about Italian Eurocommunism and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA). We were then joined by Josh Nathan Kazis, a staff writer at the Jewish Daily Forward, to talk about a growing scandal in New York City politics, reaching from the Mayor’s office to the orthodox communities of Borough Park and Williamsburg. This episode contained a description-free Shkoyach, featuring discussions of kosher labelling, kosher restaurant month, and the contentious subject of raisin challah. For the interview, we talked about the Jews of Color National Convening with conference organizer Leo Ferguson and Montreal activist Hirut Eyob. Finally, Aviva Stahl’s recent article for Alternet’s Grayzone Project is our recommendation for the week. Show Notes: https://www.treyfpodcast.com/2016/05/26/episode-18/ *EDIT: during this week's Shkoyach segment, David convinced Sam that COR stood for 'Council of Orthodox Rabbis.' This is incorrect. It appears that COR is not an acronym at all, instead a mysterious shorthand used by the Kashruth Council of Canada to label their certified products. Please direct all questions their way.
