Rabbi Ed Bernstein delivered the talk "Beyond Cleaning Our Room: Responsibilities and Opportunities in Honoring Our Parents As They Age" to Valley Beit Midrash on May 16, 2024. Special thanks to Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz and Alix Cramer of Valley Beit Midrash for allowing the rebroadcast of this talk on the NeshamaCast feed. ABOUT THE EVENT:The Fifth of the Ten Commandments is “Honor your father and mother.” It is one of the few commandments in the Torah that attaches a reward for its successful performance: “that your days may be long.” We might think that if we follow the command in our youth, clean our rooms and do other things that our parents ask, then we've checked that box. The reality is that honoring our parents is among the most difficult and grows in complexity as children—and their parents—age. Rabbi Bernstein explores Jewish perspectives on the responsibilities of adult children to their aging parents and the true rewards we gain in fulfilling this mitzvah.ABOUT THE SPEAKER:Rabbi Edward Bernstein is a Board Certified Chaplain and serves as Chaplain for Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Boca Raton, Florida. He hosts NeshamaCast, a podcast exploring Jewish spiritual care, produced by Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains. He also hosts My Teacher Podcast. Rabbi Bernstein edited  Love Finer Than Wine: The Writings of Matthew Eisenfeld and Sara Duker , a 2016 National Jewish Book Awards Finalist.  Rabbi Bernstein was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary. He served congregations in New Rochelle, NY; Beachwood, OH; and Boynton Beach, FL. Rabbi Bernstein has also served on the faculty of Camp Ramah Darom, Moishe House and the JTS Florida Office. Here is Rabbi Bernstein's presentation on VBM's YouTube channel. Here is Rabbi Bernstein's Sefaria Study Guide.  About our host:Rabbi Edward Bernstein, BCC, is the producer and host of NeshamaCast. Abstract: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and surface-based morphometry (SBM) are two widely used neuroimaging techniques for investigating brain anatomy. These techniques rely on statistical inferences at individual points (voxels or vertices), clusters of points, or a priori regions-of-interest. They are powerful tools for describing brain anatomy, but offer little insights into the generative processes that shape a particular set of findings. Moreover, they are restricted to a single spatial resolution scale, precluding the opportunity to distinguish anatomical variations that are expressed across multiple scales. Drawing on concepts from classical physics, here we develop an approach, called mode-based morphometry (MBM), that can describe any empirical map of anatomical variations in terms of the fundamental, resonant modes--eigenmodes--of brain anatomy, each tied to a specific spatial scale. Hence, MBM naturally yields a multiscale characterization of the empirical map, affording new opportunities for investigating the spatial frequency content of neuroanatomical variability. Using simulated and empirical data, we show that the validity and reliability of MBM are either comparable or superior to classical vertex-based SBM for capturing differences in cortical thickness maps between two experimental groups. Our approach thus offers a robust, accurate, and informative method for characterizing empirical maps of neuroanatomical variability that can be directly linked to a generative physical process. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.01.23.525151v1?rss=1 Authors: Antonopoulos, G., More, S., Raimondo, F., Eickhoff, S. B., Hoffstaedter, F., Patil, K. R. Abstract: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis is commonly used for localized quantification of gray matter volume (GMV). Several alternatives exist to implement a VBM pipeline. However, how these alternatives compare and their utility in applications, such as the estimation of aging effects, remain largely unclear. This leaves researchers wondering which VBM pipeline they should use for their project. In this study, we took a user-centric perspective and systematically compared five VBM pipelines, together with registration to either a general or a study-specific template, utilizing three large datasets (n greater than 500 each). Considering the known effect of aging on GMV, we first compared the pipelines in their ability of individual-level age prediction and found markedly varied results. To examine whether these results arise from systematic differences between the pipelines, we classified them based on their GMVs, resulting in near-perfect accuracy. To gain deeper insights, we examined the impact of different VBM steps using the region-wise similarity between pipelines. The results revealed marked differences, largely driven by segmentation and registration steps. We observed large variability in subject-identification accuracies, highlighting the interpipeline differences in individual-level quantification of GMV. As a biologically meaningful criterion we correlated regional GMV with age. The results were in line with the age-prediction analysis, and two pipelines, CAT and the combination of fMRIPrep for tissue characterization with FSL for registration, reflected age information better. Pioneering neuroscientist Karl Friston joins Tim to talk about a concept he's developed called the free-energy principle, which may hold the key to advancing the understanding human intelligence as we know it. Karl is a theoretical neuroscientist. He's an authority on brain imaging. His work has advanced mankind's understanding of schizophrenia, among other things. At the moment, he's becoming better known as the originator of the free-energy principle for human action and perception. In this episode, we'll talk with Karl about that free-energy principle, what it is, what it means and what it can mean for the future. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Karl_Friston_Final_auphonic.mp3 I hope you have your coffee and are sitting in a comfortable place, because this conversation is going to introduce you to some entirely new thinking from one of the world's most unique scientific thinkers, Karl Friston. Before we get started, you need to know a little about Karl, and you will need an explanation of some of the words we will use here. Karl Friston is a theoretical neuroscientist. As mentioned, he is an authority on brain imaging.  1990, he invented something called statistical parametric mapping or (SPM).  invented SPM, a computational technique that helps create brain images in a consistent shape so researchers can make consistent comparisons. He then invented Voxel-based morphometry or (VBM). An example of this is when he studied London taxi drivers to measure the rear side of the brain's hippocampus to watch it grow as their knowledge of the streets grew. After that, he invented something called dynamic causal modeling (DCM) for brain imaging, to determine if people who have severe brain damage or minimally conscious or vegetative. He is one of the most frequently cited neuroscientists in the world.  Each one of these inventions centered on schizophrenia research and theoretical studies of value-learning – formulated as the dysconnection hypothesis of schizophrenia. To try to simplify, it's the hypothesis that when the so-called wiring in your brain isn't all connecting properly. Karl currently works on models of functional integration in the human brain and the principles that underlie neuronal interactions. His main contribution to theoretical neurobiology is a free-energy principle for action and perception (active inference).  That's what we cover in this episode. Karl received the first Young Investigators Award in Human Brain Mapping in 1996. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1999. Since then, he has received numerous other honors and recognition for his work. He would constantly rummage through bargain CDs and tapes discovering cool bands like Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth, and The Red House Painters (to name a few). He was intrigued by the noisy guitar layers, which really spoke to him and they were breath of fresh air compared to the mainstream music played on the radio at that time. With his new musical influences, he knew that sitting at home with an old acoustic guitar just wasn't enough now. He made some local musician friends and soon, he would begin to contribute his new-found guitar skills with a local band noise/punk called “Vacuum Star”. We all know Gary Murray as a writer of some of the most somber, melancholy music on VBM, and “Vacuum Star” was far from that. Funny enough, some members would eventually become long-term contributors to his music in the future. It was while participating in this band Gary gained experience playing side by side with other musicians, keeping his guitar tuned throughout an entire set, and enjoying the energy of a crowd for the first time. After playing for a few years in the band, he would occasionally collaborate with Vacuum Star guitarist Torey Freeman, drummer Nathan Abel and bassist Denny Kopp to focus solely on songwriting. One memorable night happened at a party in Bellevue, where they would write a full album's worth of songs in a single evening. I guess you could say Gary was being prepared to become the future frontman of one of VBM's much loved bands. He didn't have a ton of musical influence growing up as a child, but he became interested in music after attending a last-minute ski trip in Big Bear, California in the late 1980s. He would soon fall in love with the guest band performing at the resort that weekend, setting his sights on becoming a professional musician. For almost 3 decades, he has been a fan favorite, capturing the attention of major record labels and being featured in popular music magazines. He has co-written songs for the veteran VBM band “Lassie Foundation” and the much loved “Prayer Chain”. Join Jimmy Sengenberger at the Crossroads with thoughts on the economy, Michael Flynn, and vote by mail, plus Crista Huff joins the show! Jimmy (@SengCenter) discusses the economic, social, and healthcare implications of the ongoing shutdown, and he particularly offers reaction to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin's Fox News Sunday interview yesterday. Then, Jimmy excoriates the AUDACITY of Barack Obama, Andrew McCabe, and the media in how they are santimoniously – and falsely – talking about the DOJ's decision to drop charges against former Trump national security advisor, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn (Ret). Next, Crista Huff (@Crista Huff), chief analyst at Cabot Undervalued Stocks Advisor, breaks down what's happening in the stock market, the challenges to come, and how to navigate these waters. She then offers insights into the difficulties on the horizon for Baby Boomers due to the housing market. Finally, Jimmy summarizes his recent Washington Examiner op-ed arguing against rushing toward a national vote-by-mail scheme, while also arguing VBM itself is a pretty good idea on balance.
