How Living a Life of Integrity Attracts Wealth, with Dr. Deborah Ekstrom

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 22, 2023 17:02

In this episode, host Dr. Deborah Ekstrom recounts the insightful, and eye-opening lessons she learned from the book The Way of Integrity by Martha Beck.  Dr. Ekstrom believes that practicing life with integrity is the single most important thing you can do to attract money into your life. This assertion is discussed in detail in Episode 142 of the Money Loves Women Podcast - Ten Obstacles to Women Building Wealth - Accountability.  Before we uncover how integrity, a life without lies, and wealth are related, it's important to understand the three types of lies that Beck outlines in her book. Black lies: These are deliberate, premeditated deceptions where you're lying with full intent and awareness, usually to hide some kind of unethical behavior or something you're not very proud of. White lies: Most of us engage in unconscious and even socially-conditioned white lies. Many wheels of social situations are greased with little white lies because of our collective agreement to tell harmless fibs. Gray lies: These lies are duplicitous in that we believe it's okay to lie a little, but then we rationalize to preserve our concept of ourselves as upstanding citizens. No matter the type of lie you tell – black, white, or gray – the act of telling a lie wreaks inner havoc on your emotional and physical well-being. More importantly, all of these small lies underpin the biggest lie of them all: I am not loved.  In order to be wealthy, you must first believe that you are worthy. Then, you have to love money back for loving you. If you don't love money, it will feel rejected, and it cannot come into your life. Don't believe the lie that you are not loved. Inherently, you are lovable. You always have been, and you always will be.  So, what if you challenged yourself not to lie for a week? For 30 days? As you stop lying, you uncover deeper truths. The biggest truth this show is determined to teach? Money loves you. Believe this and money will come into your life. She understands that effective communication requires more than just the ability to speak well. To truly connect with others, we need to meet them where they are. Every person learns and speaks in their own unique style, and it's up to us to tap into that style if we want to get our message across.   So how do we tap into our friends, colleagues, and family members' communication style? Sheryl uses Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences in her presentations to illustrate the nuances of communication and how we interpret information. By tailoring our message to someone's individual communication style, we can create a powerful connection that transcends words and touches others on a deeper level. She is passionate about understanding trauma and how it affects us in work and relationships.  In this episode, Rita dives into Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (cPTSD). Unlike straightforward PTSD, which develops from a singular traumatic event and triggers occur from sounds, sights, and smells, cPTSD begins after someone experiences relational trauma. The trauma occurs at the hands of a trusted person – a neighbor, friend, or family member. When triggered, cPTSD sufferers have emotional flashbacks and may be flooded by feelings of shame.  So how does cPTSD affect women as they work toward fulfillment in their personal and financial lives?  Rita shares that these women experience anxiety around both failure AND success. The fear of success, criticism, shame, and imposter syndrome. Her advice toward overcoming these thought patterns is: Change your thinking. When you get caught up in your thoughts like, “Am I good? He founded seven companies and currently brokers web-based businesses up to $50 million in value.  The first three businesses that Jason started failed. Two closed simply from bad timing, while the other suffered from too much emphasis on marketing and not enough on profitability. But Jason didn't let those setbacks stop him. Instead, he used those lessons learned to equip him for the next opportunity. With a $300 investment, his fourth business – a website that connected real estate agents to buyers – expanded to make millions. In 2010, he leveraged all the entrepreneurial experiences he gained in his early career when he joined the team at Quiet Light as a business broker.  In Episode 137, Dr. Ekstrom compared purchasing a business to an escalator when it comes to both becoming CEO and growing your wealth. But what if you're hesitant about buying or don't know where to start? Like a real estate broker, a business broker can help illuminate an intelligent path forward. As a seasoned business broker himself, Jason Yelowitz shares the value of working with a qualified professional. If buying a business sounds too daunting, consider private lending. 10 Obstacles to Women Building Wealth: Accountability, with Dr. Deborah Ekstrom

In the last series, “The Top 10 Reasons Women Fail to Grow Wealth”, Dr. Ekstrom detailed the limiting beliefs and typical behaviors that hinder women from creating a wealthy, abundant future. This episode, “10 Obstacles to Women Building Wealth: Accountability”, is all about the panacea to these obstacles: Accountability.  Accountability is arguably the most essential piece of wealth building. But when we consider the word “accountability”, typically our mind goes to the negative. We think of critical feedback or punishment. But what if we rebranded the word? Instead of holding ourselves accountable, we held ourselves capable. If you are encouraged by all the opportunities you have to take action, you feel a sense of freedom. Having choices is powerful. When you choose accountability for yourself, it drives your decisions, which drives your habits, which drives your planning. When you're accountable to yourself, you build confidence in your abilities. You're able to tolerate more risk. Both of which are pillars of building wealth. As you accumulate inner confidence and count on yourself, you teach yourself to imagine a new reality. With imagination, you can create a new vision for your life.  Though accountability is the mindset we should all strive for, there is a tendency to fall back into old, familiar patterns. For many, this pattern is a victim mindset. In this episode, Dr. Ekstrom will discuss the temptations of victimhood and how short-term comfort can prevent long-term personal, relational, and financial success.  Topics Discussed: Accountability Process improvement Imagination Building confidence Being in demand Overcoming a victim mindset Drawbacks to holding yourself accountable Short-term vs. long-term success Resources:  Uncommon Accountability: A Radical New Approach To Greater Success and Fulfillment Money Loves Women EP141 - 10 Reasons Women Fail to Grow Wealth - Part #3, with Dr. Deborah Ekstrom Money Loves Women EP140 - 10 Reasons Women Fail to Grow Wealth – Part #2, with Dr. Deborah Ekstrom Money Loves Women EP139 - 10 Reasons Women Fail to Grow Wealth – Part #1, with Dr. Deborah Ekstrom For more information on how to achieve financial freedom, personal mastery, and professional success, please visit https://moneyloveswomen.com/.

In addition to her work with Money Loves Women, Dr. Ekstrom is a sought-after plastic surgeon with 33 years of experience.  Last year, only 56 women were on the Forbes 400 wealthiest people of the year. That number should be at least 200. You don't have to be a billionaire to be considered wealthy. Wealth is relative. But what are women's common mindset slip-ups that prevent them from acquiring and sustaining wealth?  In Part 1 of this series, Dr. Ekstrom discussed the first three archetypes of women who fail with money: comfort seekers, perfectionists, and avoiders. In this episode, Dr. Ekstrom discusses traits four and five: a lack of money confidence, and wishful thinking. Lacking money confidence may prevent women from achieving financial stability, as they often fail to see their role in manifesting money. Women who are wishful thinkers expect someone else to come in and save the day while they drift along in a mediocre, unfulfilled life and fail to even see their financial potential, let alone build any lasting wealth.  The good news? All of the traits discussed in this series are rooted in fear-based thinking. They can be overcome through disciplined reflection, self-improvement, and a change in mindset.  Tune in next week for Part 3 of this mindset-changing series. In addition to her work with Money Loves Women, Dr. Ekstrom is a sought-after plastic surgeon with 33 years of experience.  Before discussing three of the ten reasons women fail with money, a conversation about mindset is needed. How do wealthy people think differently than others in various social classes? People living in poverty are motivated by fear and scarcity. The comfortable middle class prioritizes security over success. The loud rich are flamboyant and often doomed to fail. The wealthy? They're consistent and quiet. People who acquire lasting wealth come from all socioeconomic backgrounds. The traits that differentiate them include constant searching for opportunity, becoming comfortable with risk, and acknowledging their self-worth. Mindset – along with inherent fear, how you think, and what actions you take or don't – is at the center of the conversation when discussing the first three reasons women fail with money.  The good news? These three traits can be overcome by a change in thinking and an investment in coaching to break the cycle of fear-based thinking.  Tune in for Part 2 and Part 3 of this mindset-changing series in the coming weeks.  Topics Discussed: Common money mistakes women make Complacency Money anxiety Overcoming fear Money mindsets How the wealthy think differently Resources:  Lisa Nichols - Motivational Speaker Dr. Deborah Ekstrom's LinkedIn Money Loves Women Podcast Episodes (139 and counting!) Walker grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He was influenced by his father and paternal grandfather, who both owned companies, and his mother's side of the family, which was filled with academics and artists. He married those early influences by pursuing an undergraduate degree in English Literature and Religious Studies and later earning an MBA. His career followed a winding route - with stops as a stockbroker, film producer, and in startups. Along his journey, he always asked questions and tried to understand the business side of the industries where he worked. As Walker became more integrated into the startup community, he realized that most of the conversation in this space centered around creating new businesses….. or, as he refers to it: innovation. But what about purchasing existing, cash-flowing businesses to decrease the owner's risk? Then apply business skills and know-how to grow the company's revenues and increase cash flow for the new owner and dramatically increase its value while adding to the overall economy.  He realized the acquisition side of the conversation was rarely discussed. In response, Walker spent years researching – talking to stockbrokers, business owners, and investors – and over four and a half years, he outlined the steps and principles for business acquisition, “Buy Then Build.”  Walker Deibel believes that acquiring a business is the fastest way to grow your wealth. Because the major risk, business startup failure is already rung out of the equation, for most people, acquiring a business is a safer and more viable option for long-term success than starting a business. To help people succeed in business acquisition, Walker founded the Acquisition Lab in October 2019. The Acquisition Lab is an elite accelerator for acquisition entrepreneurs looking to buy their first business. It's a vetted community with a high success rate and diverse advisors.  Walker is on a mission to increase the public information available about acquisition entrepreneurship and in the process also empower women, who often are less willing to take risks than their male counterparts and are less likely to have access to capital to purchase their first business. This trauma colored his future beliefs on nearly everything: confidence, purpose, money, and career. It took another trauma, a skiing accident in 2008, for Charles to face his inherited internal blockers. While suffering from back pain after his accident, Charles discovered NeuroKinetic Therapy®, or NKT. Inspired by the teachings from NKT, Clay created new programs – The InnerPeace Process and The Laser Focus Method – that he uses with his clients today.  Pain can serve as a powerful indicator in our bodies and our minds, like a check engine light alerting us that something is not quite right. Tehmina and her husband had three sons, and while Tariq advanced his career, Tehmina served as their children's primary caregiver. Despite her primary role in the home, Tehmina was always included in the finances and knew the couple's investments intimately. Eventually as her children grew older she explored the world of business, despite no formal training. Tehmina was always inspired by fashion. Her dad was a socialite in Pakistan, and Tehmina grew up around Pakistani style worn during formal events. This love inspired her to start her own business in 2006, where she designed and supplied Pakistani fashion to women in the US. Tehmina left the company in 2018, which allowed her sister to take the reins. Tehmina then focused solely on philanthropic endeavors.  Tehmina was later recruited to join the nonprofit Developments in Literacy (DIL) as a board member. Her spirituality attracted her to giving back to the children of her homeland through this particular nonprofit which provides low-cost, high-quality education to thousands of children across Pakistan—currently educating over 29,000 students in 138 schools. Through her positions in DIL Tehmina grew her confidence in her ability to achieve and create extraordinary value. On this episode of Money Loves Women, join Dr. Deborah Ekstrom and Tehmina Jesrai to learn about Tehmina's early influences and journey from Pakistan to London to the US. You'll also discover how Tehmina's faith factored into her 30+ year marriage and inspired her to give back to DIL.  Topics Discussed: Life growing up in Pakistan Building confidence and resilience Fashion as a business Philanthropy Spirituality's role in life Perseverance after loss of a partner Resources:  Tehmina Jesrai's LinkedIn Developments in Literacy (DIL) Website DIL Los Angeles Gala 2022 For more information on how to achieve financial freedom, personal mastery, and professional success, please visit https://moneyloveswomen.com/.
