Demystifying Death: Hospice Nurse Barbara Karnes on Grief, the Dying Process, and End-of-Life Truths

This episode is different. It is personal.Because for the first time, I will be sharing something I have not yet spoken about publicly. My father passed away this March. Just two days before my birthday. And in the weeks that followed, I gave myself permission to fully grieve, to feel, to remember, to process. It was a conscious act of mourning, supported by ceremony, solitude, and also by ketamine therapy, medically supervised at our clinic in Santa Monica. It helped me meet the waves of grief and let them move through me, not around me.And in that space, I kept returning to one question: Why, in our culture, is death treated as something to avoid, deny, or sanitize? Why is something so universal, so sacred, still held in so much fear?Today's guest has devoted her entire life to shifting that.Barbara Karnes is a hospice pioneer and one of the most respected voices in end-of-life education. Her booklet Gone From My Sight, known as The Little Blue Book, has sold over 40 million copies and changed how countless families understand and approach death. In this conversation, Barbara offers profound wisdom: she offers a map, a presence, a way of holding death that allows us to also hold life more fully. This is much more than a conversation about dying. It is a conversation about what it means to live without fear, and to love more openly, even at the edge of goodbye.Episode highlights:02:45 Ariana's Personal Story of Grief and Healing05:29 Understanding the Dying Process10:40 The Role of Caregivers and Cultural Myths About Dying21:51 The Emotional and Spiritual Costs of Caregiving31:36 The Role of the Witness in the Dying Process33:04 Creating a Sacred Experience Before Death34:08 Saying Goodbye and Processing Grief42:16 The Importance of Personal Choice in End-of-Life Care44:44 Cultural Perspectives on Death and Aging52:32 Rehearsing for Death Through Life's Changes54:25 Barbara's Personal Relationship with Death56:22 Understanding Grief as Part of the Dying Process01:02:39 Barbara's Legacy and ResourcesResources mentioned:https://bkbooks.com/pages/about-barbarahttps://bkbooks.com/collections/allSOCIAL MEDIALinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/barbarakarnesrnInstagram https://www.instagram.com/barbarakarnesrnFacebook https://www.facebook.com/barbarakarnesrnYouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXVqIQdyP2OBTop8-jboRww

In this episode, Dr. G dives deep into the ancient and modern science of semen retention. He explores its historical roots in traditions like Taoism and Hinduism, where semen was seen as a sacred life force, and contrasts that with today's research—some of which links frequent ejaculation (21+ times per month) to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. Dr. G breaks down the short-term effects of retention, such as possible testosterone surges, and takes a clear-eyed look at the long-term data—revealing there's no strong evidence for sustained physiological benefits. At the same time, he explores the spiritual and energetic practices that have long been paired with retention, including breathwork, meditation, and intentional abstinence. #menshealth #fertility #wellness ==== Thank You To Our Sponsors! Most people think intuitive eating is just eating whatever you want, whenever you want, but that's not it at all.In today's episode, I'm breaking down what intuitive eating actually means, why it's not just about cravings, and how to fuel your body without obsessing over calories or macros.Spoiler: intuitive eating isn't just “listening to your body” with no structure, because let's be real, sometimes your cravings are straight-up lying to you. Instead, we're talking about how to balance mindful eating with real nutrition, so you can feel strong, energized, and satisfied without the guilt or restriction. There are so many myths about intuitive eating, especially on social media, where it's often framed as simply eating whatever sounds good in the moment. But true intuitive eating is about understanding what your body actually needs and making choices that support your energy, strength, and overall well-being. One of the biggest challenges is learning how to tell the difference between real hunger and emotional cravings, because stress, boredom, and hormones can all trick you into thinking you need something when you really don't. I'll also share why I don't count calories or macros, but still pay close attention to one key factor in my diet that makes a huge difference in how I feel and perform. Plus, if you're strength training or trying to build muscle, I'll explain exactly how to apply intuitive eating in a way that fuels your goals without undereating or overindulging. If you've ever felt stuck between “clean eating” and total chaos, this episode is for you.Intuitive eating isn't about ignoring nutrition, it's about making choices that actually make you feel good, now and long-term.I Also Talk About:(05:05) What Intuitive Eating Really Means(13:15) How to Tell the Difference Between Hunger & Cravings(18:34) The One Macro I Always Track(23:10) How Your Menstrual Cycle Affects Your AppetiteThank You to Our Sponsors: Cronometer: Track your nutrition with precision— Cronometer provides real data on macros, micros, and everything in between for better health and performance. Summary: In this week's sermon, Pastor Tom shared the incredible story of water baptism and its deep significance in our faith. From funny old tales about spontaneous baptisms to heartfelt testimonies of life-changing experiences, the message centered on the purpose and joy of baptism. Pastor Tom reminded us that Jesus commanded us to be baptized as part of the Great Commission, making it a core practice in our faith to outwardly express an inward transformation. Baptism symbolizes the end of a life of darkness and the start of one filled with purpose through Jesus. The central takeaway is that water baptism is more than just a ritual; it's a declaration of faith and a commitment to a new life in Christ.Title: Take the PlungeDate: 2/23/25, 10am, Sunday SermonSpeaker: Pastor Tom Van KempenOutline:00:00 - Introduction with a Humorous Story01:14 - Personal Experiences with Baptism05:23 - The Meaning and Purpose of Water Baptism08:23 - Baptism as Outward Sign and Invitation09:27 - Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch32:48 - Understanding and Giving Meaning to Baptism37:43 - Baptism as a Personal Choice and Celebration

Exhausted. Maxed Out. Running on Fumes. Bone-Tired. Drowning. We cannot go one day without hearing these words from friends, co-workers, family members, and sisters in Christ. No matter the season of life - college student, young mother, business executive, teacher, ministry leader, empty-nester, or retiree - we women long for margin, rest, and affirmation that all our efforts mean something. Does anyone even see, let alone appreciate, how HARD we are working? Surely, there must be a purpose beyond this daily grind that overwhelms our schedules and hearts. For many, the busyness of our lives results from saying yes to good things. But at what cost? When did we trade our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health for a couple of extra likes, fewer numbers on the scale, a bit more in our bank account, or one more thing marked off our to-do list? Do you find that your life is checking all the right boxes but still cannot find satisfaction or contentment? What's the answer for today's worn-out woman? A shift in perspective. In this episode, Laura Bailey chats about her book Embracing Eternity. We journey through the book of Ecclesiastes and discover how living with an eternal perspective results in more peaceful, purposeful, and plentiful lives today.  Join us to:  Discover how to cling to an eternal perspective in all seasons and situations Determine how to evaluate the worth of your time and energy Dive into scripture for timeless reminders about true freedom When we discover, determine, and dive into God's design for life, we can let go of the lesser things and embrace those with greater, eternal significance. Let's stop surviving and start living. We can experience life filtered through the lens of eternity, garnering the freedom only found in the permanent rather than the temporal, and discover the unimaginable benefits of a purpose and identity rooted in Christ. To be moral is to conform to a standard of right behavior. Ideally, to be moral is to stand for principles and actions that are positive and contributory to the world in which we live. This sounds great. It sounds like something we would all (with the exception of those who just don't care) want to live by. However, there is a problem. Who defines what is moral and what is not? Upon whose proclamation do we decide whether someone is acting in a positive and contributory way or in a way that is destructive? Outside of the laws of the land we live in, each of us for the most part has the capacity to develop a personal moral code. The big question is, do we each define that moral code based on personal experience and preference, or do we define it by what we would consider to be higher guidelines?

Some initiatives that promote voluntary medical male circumcision for the prevention of HIV and sexually transmitted infections have been successful, in Zambia in particular. But the question remains, is this something that should be done on baby boys or in early adolescence, or is it something that should be left as a personal choice you make in adulthood? This episode explores the themes of living explicitly beyond societal norms, personal freedom, and relationships through the insights of your host, Los Angeles attorney Jason Ingber, and therapist Rachel Feldman, coupled with a personal narrative on self-acceptance versus societal conformity. Jason shares his path to liberation through intentional deviation from societal expectations, influenced by Rachel's expertise in narrative therapy, medical sociology, human rights, and post-structuralism, which emphasizes the importance of authenticity and vulnerability. Together, they examine the therapeutic power of living with intentionality, the pressures of societal conformity, and the courage required to embrace personal truths. Additionally, a reflective monologue touches on the journey from self-policing to self-acceptance, outlining the transition from nihilism to conviction, and underlining the significance of each personal choice against the backdrop of societal expectations. This episode invites listeners to consider explicit communication and self-awareness as avenues to a more dignified, self-determined, and less oppressed life. 00:00 Embracing Failure and Living Explicitly: A Therapeutic Journey 00:55 Introducing Jason and Rachel: A Lawyer and His Therapist Dive Deep 02:09 The Power of Living Explicitly: Transparency vs. Explicitness 04:03 The Courage to Share Private Thoughts: Benefits and Risks 06:45 Unconventional Therapy: Breaking Norms for Deeper Connection 07:39 Decentering Power in Therapy: A Therapist's Vulnerable Approach 16:40 Navigating Identity, Power, and Relationships in Therapy 17:47 The Personal Mission of Intentional Failure 18:40 Subversive Action: Empowerment Through Ethical Stances 20:07 The Repetitive Nature of Growth and Overcoming Anxiety 24:03 Externalizing Problems: A Narrative Therapy Technique 27:41 Understanding Dominant Discourses and Empowerment 34:14 Personal Choices and Societal Expectations: The Decision Not to Have Children 38:43 The Complex Dynamics of Relationships and Individual Choices 42:11 The Complex Dynamics of Relationships and Self-Reflection 43:01 Exploring Personal Growth and Ideological Beliefs 45:53 Diving Deep into the Concept of Power and Its Impact 47:58 A Thoughtful Discussion on Religion, Belief, and God 54:50 The Journey of Self-Discovery and Understanding Values 01:01:25 Navigating Life's Choices with Intention and Conviction Like, Share & Subscribe - The Jason Ingber Show
