Send us a textThe Judgement of Yoyo Gold by Isaac BlumYoyo feels lost for the first time in her life. Up until now, she has known exactly who she is - the sister who keeps the house running and a daughter to the Rabbi in her community. Which can come with a lot of pressure, but she has always been able to handle it. She has never questioned why she does what she does, or the rules that her Jewish Orthodox community follows. Until her best friend Esti, is sent away for breaking some of those rules. And Yoyo begins to realize that even though Esti is not the only one who has broken rules, she seems to be the communities scapegoat. Yoyo decides she wants to call attention to the hypocrisy in her community, but how? Recommended for grades 8 and up.

Hey guys, welcome to Adulting with Autism, the podcast where we dive into the rollercoaster of adulthood through a neurodiverse lens. I'm April Ratchford, your friendly occupational therapist mom, proudly on the spectrum and raising an amazing young adult son with autism. Join us as we share stories, tips, and laughs, offering a supportive space for anyone navigating life's twists and turns. Grab your drink of choice, no judgment, and let's embark on this journey together. This is Adulting with Autism. Hey guys, hey, happy Wednesday. So glad you can make this podcast a song for you. It's called Friends. How many of us have them? Friends, ones we can depend on. Friends. Listen, you better be loving this song because it took me ages to get it right. And I used to sing that song all the time. If you don't know it, shame on your parents. And my cat, Peter, he's agreeing with me. He has all the opinions. Beats me into my next step. So I have Coach Lee Hopkins here, who is an expert on friendships. Let's be real. You guys are out of high school. And making friends outside of high school is rather difficult because if you're not going to college and you're not working yet, how else are you guys making friends? And don't say the internet. That doesn't help. Because really, human beings are social creatures and you need to learn to do it face to face. We are not made to be looking at a little screen. That's a great beginning, don't get me wrong. And that's how a lot of you guys interact in the beginning. And I'm not faulting you for that. Not faulting you at all. But you have to get used to interacting with other people. And it's a healthy thing. And Coach Lee here can help you. So he actually struggled with making friends himself because he was trying to find that perfect friend group. And we all struggled at one point of trying to find that perfect friend group. And he often felt isolated and alone. And it wasn't until he discovered the power of vulnerability that he began to break through the barriers that had held him back for so long. He learned that by speaking from the heart and being true to himself, he could have meaningful conversations that led to lasting friendships with other people. And now he's passionate about helping other people do the same. So he helps people struggling to connect with co-workers, colleagues, friends, and family members to communicate in a way that feels authentic and true to who they are. So it's not just you guys. It can be anybody who wants an authentic friendship, even your parents or your caregivers. Because think about it. They've been helping you so much that they've lost friends along the way. And you guys have to learn that your parents just aren't your parents. Your parents were people prior to being your parents or caregivers. They had things, and I'm guilty of it too, that I generally forgot who my parents were prior to having me. We all do. We all forget who our parents were before they had us. And it's a thing. It's all a kid thing. We all forget at one point that they all had lives before we entered the picture. It's no big deal. You got to remember, your parents solely made you their focus to help you become the best version of you they could be. And along the way, they gave up things they wanted to do. Having friend groups and, and don't feel bad about it. They did this voluntarily and sometimes, you know, friends sometimes grow apart and sometimes that's okay. And sometimes they come back in your life. I had a best friend in elementary school. Oh, she, Deborah, my best friend. We were like lit. And she went to another school in third grade. And just because life just happened, she went to a traditional Jewish Orthodox school. I continued on with traditional school because my parents were like, absolutely not. You're not going to Jewish. They weren't having it because I tried. And we reconnected during COVID. Friendships ebb and flow. People come in your life and they go out of your life. And that's just how friendships are. They're fluid. So give a listen to Coach Lee and he's got some great ideas that can help you, especially if you guys are now entering the workforce for the first time. And those of you that are prepping for college, also think about it. He has some great ideas. So welcome my guest, Coach Lee. As we wrap up another awesome episode of Adulting with Autism, just remember, we're all in this together. Keep being your amazing selves, celebrating wins big and small, and facing whatever life throws your way with a smile. Thanks for tuning in. And until next time, stay awesome and keep shining bright. Author Rossi talks about her new memoir “The Punk Rock Queen of the Jews” with  Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. “The Punk Rock Queen of the Jews” is published by She Writes Press and filled with fabulous rich characters, hilarious dialogue taking the reader on a ride into a secretive oppressive Jewish Orthodox world and beyond to be released on April 23rd. Rossi grew up in New Jersey where she was expected to just marry a nice Jewish boy and to be a good kosher Jewish girl but by the age of 16 the rebellious Rossi was more interested in exploring the punk rock scene of the 80's and her sexuality. Then her adventure seeking days came to a screeching halt when her parents kidnapped her and dumped her with a Hasidic rabbi known for reforming wayward Jewish girls in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Rossi was forced to relinquish her pink hair and Sex Pistols T-shirt for maxi skirts and long-sleeved blouses in this repressive, misogynistic culture straight out of the nineteenth century where she endured not only bone-crushing boredom but also outright abuse and violence. Fortunately Rossi knew there was a better future for her as she broke free from her oppressors and made her way to NYC where she thrived. Beginning as a bartender the opportunity arose in the catering industry as she talked her way into any cooking job she could get. Rossi a self-taught chef and self-made entrepreneur ended up launching The Raging Skillet one of the most sought-after catering companies in NYC that Zagat dubbed as “the wildest thing this side of the Mason-Dixon Line”. We talked to Rossi about her inspiration for writing “The Punk Rock Queen of the Jews” and her spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Rossi is the catering director, owner and executive chef of The Raging Skillet for over three decades. She has earned a reputation as the go-to company for out-of-the-box catering and weddings. The Raging Skillet has been voted one of New York's Top Five Wedding Caterers by The Knot from 2009 through 2023. Her first memoir, “The Raging Skillet: The True Life Story of Chef Rossi” was published by The Feminist Press in 2015 and turned into a stage production “Raging Skillet” by playwright Jacques Lamarre that toured nationally. Currently Rossi has written two full-length plays, a number of one-act comedies, a one-woman stage adaptation of Queen of the Jews and numerous screenplays.        For More Info… LISTEN: 600+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

It had a lot of potential that sadly it didn't capitalize on. Don't get TJ started on the lazy CGI monster. Oof!

Malky Berkowitz wants a divorce. But the 29-year-old Orthodox woman, who lives in Kiryas Joel, north of New York City, can't get a _get—_a Jewish Orthodox divorce—because her husband won't allow it, even after four years of Berkowitz fighting for one. Her case is just one of many taken up by Adina Sash, a feminist Orthodox activist in Brooklyn who posts online as @FlatbushGirl. But as Sash kept posting about Berkowitz, she found Berkowitz's story resonated more strongly with her audience than others. As time passed, and Berkowitz remained an agunah—_a "chained woman" whose husband denies her a _get—community support snowballed. "Free Malky" caught on: Sash organized rallies, commissioned an an airplane to fly a banner over New York and, most recently, organized a "sex strike", where women in support of the cause stopped going to the mikvah. (After menstruating, married Orthodox women must visit a mikvah to cleanse themselves before they can have sex with their husbands—so no bath means no sex.) The story has garnered international headlines, drawing comparisons to the ancient Greek play Lysistrata and casting a spotlight on Sash, both positive and (when Orthodox men hear about it) extremely negative. Bonjour Chai's own Phoebe Maltz Bovy had many questions from a secular feminist perspective, so we invited Sash to join the show to explain the societal problems, Orthodox women's perceived agency and what life is like inside these insular communities. The infamous “Sex Strike” was recently spearheaded by influencer Adina Miles, AKA “Flatbush Girl,”  in order to apply communal pressure to men and their rabbis to free Malky Berkowitz, who has been refused a get for four years. This initiative has created a great deal of outrage in Jewish Orthodox communities, and the “responsa” on social media platforms has been passionate and robust. Some have expressed concern that withholding sex, even for one night, is liable to destroy more marriages. Others see the outrage as the problem, and point out the lack of such fury over get refusal.  Join Rabbi Scott Kahn and Talli Rosenbaum as they discuss the desperate need for immediate solutions to prevent and free agunot, as well as the drawbacks of this form of protest.

"Here I am, Lord." These are familiar words. We have heard them from the lips of ancient heroes of the faith -- Abraham, Moses, Samuel, and more. But what did they really mean? What do WE mean when we dare speak them? Or do we know them to be so dangerous, we are not sure we are ready to whisper them under our breath, to the One who listens? Stephanie guides us through Scripture to find the geographical, emotional and mental places where these words are spoken. She then takes us to modern-day Hebrew language and religious culture through the Hebrew word for "here I am" -- heenani. It means more than catches the eye, and points to Jesus. Of course, it does - it is part and parcel of Scripture, the Word who points to the One. This episode is an invitation to experience Jewish insights into Messiah that only make sense in Christ. It is an invitation to worship afresh the One who is our King, our God, our Savior, our Intercessor, our Friend - the One who, ultimately, comes to us, saying, "Here I am."   NEW BONUS | QUESTIONS TO GO DEEPER ON YOUR OWN OR WITH A FRIEND 1. What can we learn from the story of Samuel's calling and how can we apply it in our lives? 2. How did Abraham's response of "Here I am" to God's call change the course of his life and what can we learn from it? 3. What is the significance of the Hinani prayer in Jewish Orthodox theology and how does it relate to our Christian faith? 4. How can we practice humility and acknowledge our unworthiness before God, as expressed in the Hinani prayer? 5. How does the role of a worship leader, such as a Chazan, differ between Jewish Orthodox and Christian communities? 6. How can we love God and others with both Agape and Phileo love, as discussed in the episode? 7. How does the concept of communal prayer in Judaism compare to what we see in Christian worship services? 8. How can we ensure that our own inadequacies don't hinder the prayers we offer on behalf of others? 9. How can we respond with "Here I am" to Jesus's call to love and follow him? 10. In what ways can we grow in intimacy with God through our own research and study of Scripture? This series is an invitation to immerse yourself in the various ways God communicates to us, and us to Him. So pay attention, He is here and willing to whisper in your ear. A word of caution: don't come to Scripture with the agenda of finding yourself there. Right now we are going to take Scripture in. Like breathing, like eating, like smelling a flower. Don't come to Scripture with the agenda of finding yourself there. Come with the firm intention of discovering God instead. And then Scripture will never disappoint. God promises to be found in the places where He dwells – His Word especially. And in the process, you will undoubtedly find yourself as you find Him. So as we enter the hallowed pages of Scripture together, through a humble doorway and a very simple story, ask yourself: what is this telling me about Jesus? BECOME A GOSPELSPICE MEMBER TODAY! US President Joe Biden has shifted from criticizing the Israeli government's judicial overhaul plan to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's "extremist" government. Berman fills us in on what's behind the shift, what it means for Netanyahu's chances to score an invite to the White House and how it'll impact US efforts to broker a normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Goren discusses a recent cabinet meeting, which ministers used as an opportunity to lay into Attorney General Gali Baharav Miara's handling of the judicial overhaul protests. Goren talks about the comparison government officials make between law enforcement's handling of today's protest and the demonstrations during the 2005 Gaza Disengagement and whether the juxtaposition is valid. She also fills us in on the anti-overhaul moves latest moves as the coalition readies to pass through a first reading later Monday legislation that would block courts from exercising judicial review over the “reasonableness” of government decisions. Berman shares how President Isaac Herzog has decided to weigh in on a recent uptick in attacks by Jewish Orthodox extremists on Christians in Israel. He discusses the diplomatic ramifications of the trend and whether Israel is capable of addressing it. Finally, he lays out a recent interview Israel's Ambassador to Kyiv Michael Brodsky in which he criticized Ukraine's voting record against Israel at the United Nations. Berman reveals what was behind the frustration and speculates on whether Kyiv is likely to change course in light of the criticism. "Having a scarce mindset is a roadblock to success." But that doesn't always apply to everyone, Yermi says. In fact, there are tons of successful people who have a scarcity mindset. So really, what contributes to success? First, we must acknowledge that it's not all about money. In this episode of Wealth Science Podcast, Yermi Kurkus explains how optimism is the power behind attraction, why most things go back to the relationships you have, and the top three things that make a person irresistible in business. Outline of the episode: 1.  How 'Jeremy' became 'Yermi' 2. The scarcity mindset goes beyond the money we make 3. Is attraction nothing but woohoo stuff? 4. Real estate banks on real relationships 5.     Your network is your net worth! About Yermi Kurkus: Yermi Kurkus was born and raised in a Jewish Orthodox community in Montreal, Canada, that put a lot of emphasis on outreach and being a productive member of society. As a child, Yermi really took to this community work and outreach. His parents and teachers told him that he could one day help people for a living as a legitimate way of earning a livelihood. At the time, Yermi didn't really know what that meant. At first, Yermi figured that a doctor was someone that helps people for a living. So, he tried his hand at medicine, volunteering as an EMT and getting all the way to pre-med. There he realized that medicine was not going to be the way for him to "help people for a living". That is when he transferred into business; coming from an entrepreneurial family, he was going to find a way to help other entrepreneurs through business. In 2010, Yermi's wife at the time left him, took the kids, his mother passed away, and the business that he built was forced to shut down all in just 10 short days. Yermi was devastated; his entire life was falling apart in his hands. Over the course of the next 18-20 months, Yermi went to get the help that he needed and decided to volunteer his time in the prison system as community service and as a way of being a productive member of society. It was in the Prison System where Yermi discovered his love and passion for Psychology and considered becoming a therapist. Instead, international media attention has turned to the persecution of China's Uyghur population, a Muslim minority of about 12 million suffering genocide at the hands of the Chinese government. For many, this is not just a humanitarian crisis, but a deeply Jewish issue: a million Uyghurs are being held in concentration camps, organized by a government trying to erase their cultural identity. Rabbi Anthony Knopf joins from England to explain why Jews need to pay attention—and what they can do to help. Brought up in a deeply observant Jewish Orthodox household with a reverence for her family's history, Shelly Tygielski embraced the traditions, teachings, and practices of her faith, even spending summers in Jerusalem with family. Heading to college, then grad school, she pursued her masters in international affairs, then began building a powerhouse career in business, along with a family. But, along the way, she found herself questioning the rules and assumptions by which she lived, and the more she did, the more the walls began to come tumbling down. At 27, diagnosed with a chronic disease that left her temporarily blind, she knew a different narrative needed to be set in motion. She began to embrace her then years-long exploration of Eastern traditions and practices, growing largely out of Tibetan Buddhism, and started the process of reclaiming and reimagining her life. A process that would eventually lead her away from a 20-year career at the highest levels of business and into the world of advocacy and self-care. Though, as you'll learn, advocacy and a deep exploration of the heart and mind, have always been a part of her DNA. Shelly began teaching meditation to a few friends on the beach, and each time, more people started showing up, until her Sunday meditation on the beach grew into a community of more than 15,000 people that call themselves The Sand Tribe. Her promise - no barrier to entry, all are welcome. Her fierce devotion to elevating others led her to post a simple form online during March of 2020, connecting those in need with those who wanted to help. It went viral, becoming a global mutual aid movement called the Pandemic of Love that has now generated more than $60-million in mutual aid, matched over 2-million people, and served as a bridge to see the humanity in others at a time it's needed more than ever. When someone passes in the Jewish Orthodox faith, there is a vigil.  A person, known a s a shomer, stays up with the recently deceased to make sure that evil spirits or other nefarious entities stays away so the soul of those who passed may go in peace.  The position in modern days is ceremonial, but what happens if demons or monsters do exist in such circumstances?  The new movie, THE VIGIL, shows us what just might. Yakov Ronen (Dave Davis) is part of a support group of Jewish folk who have left the Orthodox community in New York City.   When a former member of his temple asks him to do shomer for the recently deceased Mr. Litvak, he agrees to do so for $400.  However, he is introduced to the deceased widow who has dementia, who doesn't want him there.  But by the end of the night, he may have something much more worrisome to be concerned about. The film is the motion picture debut of director and screenwriter Keith Thomas.  Having played festival circuits since 2019, the movie finally was released in the United States in February to much praise by critics.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this supernatural thriller and gives their thoughts.

Monsey. Rockland County. The Hudson River Valley. The image of suburbia. This small town across the Tappan Zee Bridge somehow developed into one of the largest Jewish Orthodox enclaves worldwide. Though the area had some minor Jewish beginnings from the end of the 19th century, it was with the vision of Rav Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz that Monsey began to develop as a Jewish community. Rav Shraga Feivel built Bais Medrash Elyon and his family and students laid the foundations of many Torah institutions including Yeshiva of Spring Valley and Bais Shraga. Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik was an early rabbi in Spring Valley, while his wife Rebbetzin Shoshana was a pioneer in girls education, standing at the helm of the Monsey Bais Yaakov for decades. A fog of war clouds the Israeli airspace as this episode goes to press. The country’s ability to secure its citizens is once again being put to the test by the more than 1,000 rockets fired by Hamas from Gaza over the past 40 hours. This reawakened quagmire sits awkwardly with the pacifying facade deployed a year ago by the Abraham accords normalizing ties with a select few Arab nations. A few weeks ago, France’s high court ruling in the Sarah Halimi case had the effect of reconnecting Israel’s “right to exist” with its commitment to secure Jews worldwide. In 2017, this 65-year-old Jewish Orthodox woman was cold-bloodedly thrown out of her balcony by a Jew-baiting, Quran-chanting Frenchman of Malian origin. The French judiciary’s failure to impart justice for the murder reminds the European conscience of Zionism’s noble aims, thereby helping rehabilitate Israel’s mission in the moral order. As the Halimi family continues a desperate search for justice and Israeli civilians undergo the heaviest rocket fire in a decade, we sit down with Simone Rodan-Benzaquen—the American Jewish Committee’s (AJC) Europe Director—and Einat Wilf—former member of the Knesset and co-author of The War of Return (2020), a widely noted polemic on the Palestinian refugee question. The episode would have been timely if only for the ongoing spike of anti-Semitic hate in Europe and Israel’s role in combating it. The escalating conflict in the Gaza strip and around the recent evictions in Sheikh Jarra (Jerusalem) have added an unfortunate newsy touch. Enjoy! “Happiness is not a room. Compassion is not a place. Mercy is not a state. It passes, like anger, like hunger, like horniness...These are all emotions, and you have to observe them.” ~Rabbi Iggy Gurin Oh my, it’s been a week, hasn’t it?! The windows are open and fresh air is pouring in. While that big picture feels a whole lot brighter today, there’s still hella personal work to do. For anyone challenged by addiction, the world still feels awash in shadow. But Rabbi Igael Gurin-Malous says connection is the light in the darkness and everyone has access if they keep walking. Iggy is absolute sunshine in human form, a self-proclaimed wise-ass and walking contradiction. He’s the f-bomb-dropping spiritual counselor, the rabbi with tattoos and the podcast, Tattoos and Torah.  Professionally, Iggy’s a renowned Talmud teacher and founder of T’shuvah Center in Brooklyn, NY, a space that offers those in recovery a community to which they can genuinely belong rather than simply fit in. Here, authenticity plays a vital role in the healing process, as does spirituality.  Culturally-speaking, as Americans, we’re programmed to focus only on our higher Self, to goal-set, to achieve, at the expense of better understanding our lower self. What lessons do we miss out on learning when we shy away from the uncomfortable feelings that reside in all of us? What could we gain by sitting with that otherness? “Life is about struggle...not in a depressing way, but life is about the journey, and life is about the struggle to balance all these different forces within us.”  *** Rabbi Igael "Iggy" Gurin-Malous is a renowned Talmud teacher, spiritual counselor, artist, and educator. He grew up between Belgium, Israel (so expect him to be well dressed and blunt) and the United States in a traditional Jewish Orthodox home. He is a frequent author, speaker, teacher and contributor on subjects ranging from Talmud, Jewish text, spirituality, addiction, recovery, fatherhood and LGBTQI+ issues. Today He is the founding rabbi and CEO of T’shuvah Center, a new long term Jewish recovery community in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. He was formerly the Director of Spiritual counseling at Beit T’Shuvah in Los Angeles. He is also Temple Israel of Hollywood Talmud Scholar in Residence, teaching weekly classes on Interpreting Talmud. Coming it out is not just a proclamation. It’s not just an affirmation. It is an act of bravery and assertion. It’s a statement : This is who I am! In this episode of Tattoos and Torah, Rabbi Iggy explores the nuances of coming out and how he approaches the integration of queer identity with spiritual identity. In many ways, coming out marks the beginning of something. The practice of coming out weaves into a life long emotional, psychological and spiritual practice, because we live in a mostly heteronormative world that requires a consistent ‘coming out’ in the occupying of space as a queer person. (Coming out isn’t something that happens just once for many of us… It can be an ongoing aspect of being queer). Queer spirituality is not a common tandem. In fact, few people articulate the relationship between their LGBTQI+ identity and their spiritual world.Rabbi Iggy talks about his own experiencing with coming out, the lessons he learned in the process, and how his origins within a Jewish Orthodox home impacted his coming out. Growing up in a Jewish Orthodox home, with no visible gay role models, coming out was a complex journey. His spiritual expedition takes on a tour of his stops along the way, and the principles he developed that have helped him find comfort in his own skin while fully embracing his spiritual life and path. If you are interested in the cross section of spirituality and queer identity, if you’re looking for support in your own coming out journey, or if you want to hear about the community you belong to, then this podcast episode if for you.

We have become quite estranged from ourselves. We often choose cynicism as a defense mechanism and are hiding behind our questions. It is hard for us to show up in an authentic way because if doesn't feel safe. Rabbi Iggy argues that we need a place where we can just be and belong. Part of being a man is exactly to make those choices of who I want to be, how I want to be and what do I want to communicate about myself. A fascinating learning experience about manhood, masculinity and what is the essence of the Jewish approach to humanity and manhood. Look who’s talking today on Rolonda On Demand! Baltimore Judge Karen Friedman lays down the law on how #COVID19,, the #BLM Movement, #mentalillness and the recent surge in #crime and #donesticviolence are affecting the #criminaljustice system. Plus, Judge Karen and I have an open and honest conversation about the historic bond between Blacks and Jews on the frontlines of #racialjustice and how that historic bond is needed now more than ever. In this episode of Rolonda On Demand, I continue my cool conversations about race, class and justice with Baltimore's Judge Karen Friedman who expresses grave concern over the rise of hate crimes, including anti-semiticism, most hurtfully and recently from Black celebrity, Nick Cannon. Judge Friedman cites the historic bond between Blacks and Jews and encourages continued bonding, learning each others' history and counseling in some cases over cancelling. Judge Karen grew up in Brooklyn, New York in an Orthodox Jewish family. She attended a right wing all Jewish Orthodox school but was raised in an “open-minded” family. She credits this open-mindedness for her success. While her brothers all became rabbis, Judge Friedman became a judge. Her mother maintained a business while her father was a business school professor. At the age of 19 Judge Friedman moved to Maryland and would go on to attend the University of Maryland School of Law. The connections she made at the law school and the friendships she forged proved to be a great asset to her in the future. When a Probate Judge died, she was asked to fill the vacant position, and was appointed Probate Judge by Governor Paris Glendenning shortly thereafter. Her career has since taken her to the District Court of Maryland and finally the Baltimore Circuit Court – the highest-level trial court in the state. Judge Friedman described the relationship between her public position and her faith throughout this account. Judge Friedman also talks about: How Class is as big a controversial issue as race in America. (18:36) Mental Illness and the Law (20:50) Have Prisons Become the Depositories of Society's Ills? Hair Love won a 2020 Oscar in the Animated Short category. It seemed appropriate to think about the many ways that hair invades and controls how we spend our time and shapes our sense of self. And if you start to think about it -- as I did -- it is a lot.Throwing in a caveat and a correction -- and then a note. Correction: Matthew Cherry directed the heart-tugging Oscar winning animated short "Hair Love" -- not what I said. Caveat: For my relatives in Israel who might still be listening to our podcast -- the choice by some Jewish women to wear a hair wig [sheitel] over one's hair to hide it from the male-gaze, just seems strange to me, and, for me, it's not attractive, as the wigs are clearly wigs; maybe that's the point. Note: This is my observation of a style choice -- not a judgement of a religious choice. It's part of this episode's theme -- humans are weird about hair. Added Note: How about a Jewish Orthodox version of the Hijab as a substitution for the sheitel? We recorded this BCR episode at 5Napkin on W. 84th Street. She is also passionate about raising awareness to those who are unfamiliar with these situations since most people will likely be affected or will know some who will affected by these issues.  - We discuss the many myths often associated with secondary infertility and infertility. This week, find out why we celebrate Christmas on December 25th and the differences between each of the four Christmas Masses. The show wraps up with bishop answering questions from listeners. Listener-submitted questions: • If Mary was already saved from original sin, why did she need to be saved again Jesus’s death on the cross? • I'm a candidate for formation as a 3rd order Franciscan. My formation director assigned the following reading from St. Paul, 1 Corinthians 14:34-35. “women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but they should be subordinate, as even the law says. But if they want to learn anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is improper for a woman to speak in the church.” When did this practice change? Are there still some churches doing this today? As a Jew growing up, I can picture the Jewish Orthodox synagogue and the division of men and women. Please explain this former Church practice and how it changed. Thank you so much! God bless you always, Bishop Rhoades. • Just read that Cardinal Dolan will not refuse the Host to Catholics defending abortion. How can this even be considerable acceptable? My heart hurts. • Is it true that Vatican II removed the minor rite of exorcism from baptism? • My daughter was baptized Lutheran as an infant and is now a student at Ball State and a member of Christian fellowship group there. She says she is getting baptized again next month. Is it even worth doing this, other than for an earthly symbolic statement? Now, as much as I hoped she’d become Catholic, I just don’t know how to support her. What do I do? How do I teach her the truth without offending her but support her walk to know Christ in her life, yet protect her from the many false evangelical leaders? ------ Truth in Charity is brought to you in part by Notre Dame Federal Credit Union. ------ Live: www.redeemerradio.com Follow us on social media: www.Facebook.com/RedeemerRadio www.Twitter.com/RedeemerRadio www.Instagram.com/Instagram Submit your question(s): Call / Text (Holy Cross College text line) - 260-436-9598 Online - www.RedeemerRadio.com/AskBishop E-mail - AskBishop@RedeemerRadio.com Subscribe to the Podcast: iTunes | Google Play | SoundCloud | RSS

Blessed be He who made me woman created of nothing!   Blessed be He who hasn't made me man who never dies and is not born. So began the mornings of Shin Shifra, born in Bnei Brak in 1931, who turns the traditional Jewish Orthodox morning prayer up-side-down.  Shin Shifra’s poetry is steeped in Orthodox religious practice, befitting her home life and background. But it portrays a feminine and feminist focus, as in the poem 'Sabbath Prayer,' translated by Tsipi Keller and read by host Marcela Sulak: "Let there be in the house a troop of toddlers... Let them bring in mud / from the garden and I will yell at them / let them quarrel and call each other names / and they will give me strength / like the angels of the recitation of Shema / and my forefathers will be named in them."   Text: Poets on the Edge. An Anthology of Contemporary Hebrew Poetry. Selected and translated by Tsipi Keller. SUNY Press (2008).   Music: Hagar Kadima - 'Stop' (2011), lyrics by Shin Shifra, performed by Etty BenZaken. Gil Shohat - 'Songs of Bathsheba' (2005), lyrics by Shin Shifra.

Although the practice of styling hair may appear to be based in vanity, hairdressing traditions and styling practices reflect our belief systems about race, class and cultural production. From the hills of San Francisco to the hills of the Appalachian Mountains; from the tip of Provincetown, Mass., to the tip of the Gullah Geechee Islands in South Carolina; and from the Lumbee Indians, who were here before there was an America, to Pakistanis who just arrived in Queens, this multimedia presentation gives unprecedented access into the intimate space of the salon. Speaker Biography: An award-winning author and photographer and an Archie Green Fellow, Candacy Taylor traveled over 20,000 miles throughout the US interviewing hair stylists who serve African American, Appalachian, Cajun, Dominican, Gullah Geechee, Jamaican, Japanese, Jewish (Orthodox), Lumbee Indian, Pakistani and LGBT communities.
