Today we will discuss one heck of a messy case that takes place in Missouri in the 2000s. The chaos begins when Betsy Faria's husband, Russ Faria, comes home one evening to find his terminally ill wife bloodied on the living room floor. The investigators and prosecutor, Leah Askey, decide to manipulate the evidence in an attempt to show Russ murdered his cancer stricken wife. With the help of Pamela Hupp, Betsy Faria's friend, also the state's star witness testifying to Russ's abusive, alcoholic ways. Russ is found guilty of murder. After several years go by with Russ in prison, the questionable death of Pamela Hupp's 77-year-old mother, a few convenient life insurance payouts, Russ is granted a new trial. Listen to today's case to hear about how desperate Pamela Hupp was to frame Russ for murder she sought out a new victim, Louis Gumpenberger. This week's episode will leave you saying what the heck!? Bone Deep: Untangling the Betsy Faria Murder CaseDec 12, 2021The explosive, first-ever insider's account of a case that continues to fascinate the public—the shocking wrongful conviction of Russell Faria for his wife's murder—a gripping read told by New York Times bestselling true crime expert Charles Bosworth Jr. and Joel J. Schwartz, the defense attorney who battled for justice, and ultimately prevailed. On December 27th, 2011, Russell Faria returned to his Troy, Missouri, home after his weekly game night with friends to an unthinkable, grisly scene: His wife, Betsy, lay dead, a knife still lodged in her neck. She'd been stabbed fifty-five times. First responders concluded that Betsy was dead for hours when Russ discovered her. No blood was found implicating Russ, and surveillance video, receipts, and friends' testimony all supported his alibi. Yet incredibly, police and the prosecuting attorney ignored the evidence. In their minds, Russ was guilty. But prominent defense attorney Joel J. Schwartz quickly recognized the real killer. The motive was clear. Days before her murder, the terminally ill Betsy replaced her husband with her friend, Pamela Hupp, as her life insurance beneficiary. Still, despite the prosecution's flimsy case and Hupp's transparent lies, Russ was convicted—leaving Hupp free to kill again. Bone Deep takes readers through the perfect storm of miscalculations and missteps that led to an innocent man's conviction—and recounts Schwartz's successful battle to have that conviction overturned. Written with Russ Faria's cooperation, and filled with chilling new revelations and previously undisclosed evidence, this is the story of what can happen when police, prosecutor, judge, and jury all fail in their duty to protect the innocent—and let a killer get away with murder.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Have you ever been blamed for something you didn't do? It sucks! But that pales in comparison to truly being framed, which is the focus of Episode 78!First, Anna goes over some of the ways a person can be put away for a crime they didn't commit, and Benton tells the strange tale of Barry Ardolf and his reign of terror via a hacked wifi network. Then, Anna relays the frame up of Floyd Bledsoe by his brother Tom. Finally, the two watch a truly iconic episode of Dateline, profiling the three alleged murders by Pamela Hupp. Our TV doc this week is Season 30: Episode 22 of Dateline, "The Real Thing About Pam".

In 2016 a woman had just pulled into her driveway in her quiet neighborhood in Missouri, when suddenly her passenger door flung open and in jumped a man she didn't recognize who was wielding a knife. The woman froze in terror hoping this was just a robbery, but when the man spoke, she knew this situation was much much worse. Ten minutes later the police arrived at the woman's house, and what they saw in the hallway of the first floor shocked them. However, the real shocker came a week later when they realized who this man was, and why he had gone to that woman's house in the first place. This story starts a bit slow, but then it spirals into madness very rapidly. And that is why this story has become one of the most infamous true crime cases in modern history. For 100s more stories like this one, check out our main YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @MrBallen....Note about content:We do not do any original reporting. Who is Pam Hupp? According to Wikipedia, "Pamela Hupp is an American woman who in 2016 murdered Louis Gumpen-berger, a crime for which she is serving a life sentence. Gumpenberger, who suffered from severe mental and physical impairments, was shot to death in Hupp's home in O'Fallon, Missouri. Hupp's claim that she had shot Gumpenberger in self-defense after he pursued her into her home wielding a knife was not accepted by law enforcement, and she ultimately entered an Alford guilty plea before charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action could go to trial. Testimony from Hupp played a key role in the 2013 conviction of Russ Faria for the murder of his wife, Betsy Faria, who was stabbed to death in her home in Troy, Missouri in 2011. Russ Faria was exonerated in a second trial in 2015 after his defense attorney was permitted to introduce evidence that had previously been withheld from trial, some of which implicated Hupp as having killed Betsy Faria. Law enforcement have theorized that Hupp tricked Gumpenberger into entering her home and then murdered him in a failed attempt to frame Russ Faria. In July 2021, Hupp was charged with the first-degree murder of Betsy Faria. Hupp has also been investigated in connection with the death of her mother, Shirley Neumann, who died in 2013 from injuries sustained in a fall from the balcony of her third-floor apartment in Fenton, Missouri." What caused Pam Hupp to do so many crazy things? Does she even understand her crimes? That's what we discuss today on Dark Side Of. More at http://www.darksidepod.com
THE TRUE STORY BEHIND NBC'S MARQUEE MINI-SERIES "THE THING ABOUT PAM" STARRING RENEE ZELLWEGER AS PAM HUPP AND JOSH DUHAMEL AS JOEL SCHWARTZ, PREMIERING FEBRUARY 2022.The explosive, first-ever insider's account of the case that's captivated millions – the murder of Betsy Faria and the wrongful conviction of her husband – told by Joel J. Schwartz, the defense attorney who fought for justice on behalf of Russel Faria, and New York Times bestselling author Charles Bosworth Jr.On December 27th, 2011, Russell Faria returned to his Troy, Missouri, home after his weekly game night with friends to an unthinkable, grisly scene: His wife, Betsy, lay dead, a knife still lodged in her neck. Written with Russ Faria's cooperation, and filled with chilling new revelations and previously undisclosed evidence, this is the story of what can happen when police, prosecutor, judge, and jury all fail in their duty to protect the innocent—and let a killer get away with murder. Around 9:30 pm, on December 27th, 2011, just off Highway H on a dead-end drive in Troy, Missouri, a man named Russ Faria came home from a game night with friends to find his wife, Betsy Faria, stabbed to death. Initially, Russ thought that Betsy had killed herself, as he could not see the extent of her injuries (she was stabbed 55 times,) and she was suffering from Stage 4 cancer and had attempted to do so twice before. But then, Betsy's death was ruled a homicide and Russ was the prime suspect. While Russ sat behind bars, another character would emerge...a woman by the name of Pamela Hupp, who was an acquaintance of Betsy's and had been the last person to see her before she died. As police slowly uncovered who Pam Hupp really was, they realized she was more of a conniving, manipulating and murderous monster than the unassuming wife and mother she pretended to be. And Betsy's killing would not be her last...not even close...Show Notes:https://open.spotify.com/show/6ggmbItu0L9fPaRU3OmsCKhttps://www.stlmag.com/longform/pam-hupp/Thank you to our sponsors:Deep Sentinelhttps://www.deepsentinel.com/Beacon https://www.beacon.site/HelpYouFind.Mewww.HelpYouFind.Me/missouri15

Listener Discretion is advised – there is very adult content ahead and you have been warned. Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained. I’m your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the weird, wonderful, unexplained, eerie, scary and down-right unbelievable. There will be tales of ghosts, murder, supernatural beings and unexplained mysteries. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, relax and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... And on today’s Dark enigma we are picking up where we left off from last week and finishing up the story about the murder of Betsy Faria. As always, we will be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. I will leave the choice of libation up to you, so choose your venom accordingly… Alright, for the game part this week, how about we keep it easy and use the same as last week, so every time I say money that will be a single shot and every time I say knife, that’s a double shot. Ok, now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… And the crazy ass story of Betsy Faria’s murder, her husbands’ trial and her so-called best friend’s multiple stories ok so to recap…. Betsy Faria had survived one round of chemo and had just celebrated her birthday only to find out that her cancer was back. Her friend Pamela Hupp had talked her into changing her life insurance so that Hupp was the beneficiary instead of Betsy’s husband and children. Then Betsy’s husband, Russ, despite having a rock solid alibi and never wavering from his story was arrested and on trial. And Pam Hupp has changed her story multiple times and hasn’t provided any alibi, but yet is not on trial for anything and has received funds from life insurance policies to boot. Ok, so I don’t know about you guys, but I smell something seriously rotten in Denmark… and it’s not the cheese… so let’s jump right back in to it where we left off. Detail by detail, Schwartz went through the forensics, timing, and alibi. He even addressed Askey’s earlier theory, that Russ had stabbed his wife in a spontaneous fit of rage and cleaned up in a matter of minutes. This was a murder designed to look like rage, Schwartz said. “There were no irregularities in those stab wounds.” They were methodical, neatly aligned, no wiggle to the blade. Many were likely inflicted after death; they hadn’t bled. As prosecutor, Askey had the final word: “There isn’t any evidence that points anywhere else.” When Schwartz objected, the jury was told to disregard the statement, but many of them must have agreed with it. One juror actually scribbled a note: “They’re trying to pin this on Pam Hupp.” In four-and-a-half hours, they returned a verdict of guilty.

As always, we will be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. I will leave the choice of libation up to you, so choose your venom accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say money that will be a single shot and every time I say knife, that’s a double shot. Ok, now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… with a does of greed, sex death, and a tangle of lies, today we present the unimaginable, infamous case of Pam Hupp let’s jump right on in my heathens… The 911 operator heard a woman refusing to get into a vehicle and begging for help. Gunshots—loud and staccato—cut through the confusion of noises. A smoke alarm shrilled. When police arrived moments later, a 33-year-old man lay dead inside the O’Fallon, Missouri, home. The caller stated the man had climbed into her SUV, held a knife against her throat, and demanded that she take him to a bank to get “Russ’s money.” Terrified for her life, she said, she’d knocked the knife away, ran inside through the garage door, dashed into the master bedroom, and grabbed a .38 Ruger revolver from her nightstand as he came after her like “a madman.” The caller—a 58-year-old woman named Pamela Hupp—was questioned and released, and was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder 7 days later. But before being booked, she asked to use the restroom and stabbed herself in the neck and wrists with a ballpoint pen.
