I hung out with Meredith Graves, Ray McAndrew and Shaun Sutkus from Syracuse, New York punk band Perfect Pussy one windy summer day as the band took a smoke break. The band tour van was noticeably dented from a collision, so we sat on the grass in the sun. Perfect Pussy began as a "fake band" that singer Meredith Graves pulled together for her film director friend Scott Coffey's 2013 film, Adult World. But Perfect Pussy ended up becoming a real project and the band were quickly touring North America. Lead singer Meredith Graves was also very vocal about the abuse of power by older men in the music industry--when it was something that people were afraid to do. https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/515-sun-kil-moon-yells-at-cloud-war-on-drugs-suck-my-cock-and-the-language-of-male-violence/ What happened to the tour van? Why did Meredith choose that band name? What was it like to get such quick success? How did Meredith react to pressure to be the focal point of the band? Which song does everyone think about is about sex (when it's really about something else)? What was it like for the band when Meredith decided to call out bad behavior in her hometown music scene? Which Perfect Pussy song is "the hard one" to play? Which song did Ray want to sound like Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation"? What is "band feelings time"? Which Perfect Pussy song is the first Meredith duet with... Meredith? You'll have to listen to find out. Tracks played on the radio edit of the show... 1) Perfect Pussy, Say Yes to Love (2014) "Driver" 2) Perfect Pussy, Say Yes to Love (2014) "Advance Upon the Real" 3) Perfect Pussy, I Have Lost All Desire for Feeling (2013) "i" 4) Perfect Pussy, Say Yes to Love (2014) "Interference Fits" 5) Perfect Pussy, I Have Lost All Desire for Feeling (2013) "iii" NO songs CANCON

This week, we're revisiting a unique talk recorded at last year's On Air Fest. On Air is a rad festival devoted to audio storytelling and the creative possibilities of sound. The festival returns later this month in Brooklyn. You can find more info about speakers and how to attend at onairfest.com Today's episode, a collaboration with The Players' Tribune, was recorded earlier this month in front of a live audience at On Air Fest at the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn. When On Air Fest reached out to Talkhouse about curating a live episode for their podcast festival, we had an idea: What if we, the outlet where musicians and filmmakers write and speak about their experiences, partnered with Derek Jeter's The Players' Tribune, the site where athletes write about their own experiences, for a podcast discussion about what the first-person narrative really looks like? The Players' Tribune loved the idea, and brought in NFL linebacker Cameron Lynch to speak with frequent Talkhouse contributor Meredith Graves (Perfect Pussy). Their thoughtful and often funny conversation takes in a lot, from shutting down the "shut up and dribble" narrative, to the very real pressures of professionally rolling "the dice of life" every single day. It also touches on Fergie's National Anthem blowback, the truth and falsity of people's preconceptions about athletes and rock stars, the perils of Googling oneself, and reckoning with the fact that each of us is "an unpredictable consciousness driving a meat-covered skeleton." Dan Treadway, Deputy Editor at Players' Tribune, and I kick off the live conversation with some background on each of our first-person-driven media outlets. Check it out, and subscribe now on iTunes or Stitcher to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. — Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer Today’s episode was recorded by Mark Yoshizumi with Michael Bosworth, and co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. The Talkhouse Podcast’s theme song was composed and performed by The Range.
Meredith Graves is the director of music for Kickstarter. She is also the singer of Perfect Pussy, runs her own record label, and is a former MTV News journalist. But wait, there's more! Meredith is also a practicing witch in the Solomonic grimoire tradition. She recently published an article in the resurrected horror magazine Fangoria on how Hollywood consistently gets demon summoning wrong on film. Meredith's dog is the President of Hell, the Goetic demon Glasya-Labolas or Caacrinolaas, a terrier dog with griffin wings. We talk about the high strangeness of New York, the rigors of touring, the catharsis of witchcraft and music, the antifascist black metal fest Black Flags Over Brooklyn, and Witchstarter, her pet project at Kickstarter. Sweden's Holograms are a punk band that incorporate synths into their sound. They are signed to New York's Captured Tracks label (home of talented and controversial bands like Mac DeMarco, DIIV and Perfect Pussy). When I found these guys backstage, they were a few beers into their night. Trying to get this drunk punk band to answer some questions was equal parts challenging, frustrating and FUN. Listen to our hilarious chat. (They even manage to crack me up.) Tracks played on the show... 1) Holograms Forever (2013) "Flesh and Bone" 2) Holograms Forever (2013) "Meditations" 3) Holograms Holograms (2012) "Transform" 4) Holograms Forever (2013) "Lay Us Down Forever" NO songs CANCON
