This week's guest has poured a lot of passion and creativity into dog advocacy. Happy to welcome to the show Janet Weiss, the heralded drummer behind Sleater-Kinney, Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, The Shins and her long time band Quasi. Janet introduces us to her 7 year old Heeler Dizzy and pays respects to her "equal" Mac and her anxious girl Isobel. Great talk that covers her car accident that left her laid up for three months, the Drum-a-thon she put on that raised over $20k for her local dog rescue and her foray into pet portraits that she paints onto bass drum heads. Janet gave some well deserved shout outs to three great organizations starting with One Tail at a Time Dog Rescue PDX whose mission is to improve the lives of companion animals by providing humane, individualized care and a chance to know the comforts of a loving home through advocacy, education, and support of those in need. To adopt, foster, volunteer or donate visit otatpdx.orgHigh praise also goes out to Oregon Dog Rescue who are devoted to placing dogs in the best homes and assuring the long-term success of the adoption. To adopt, foster, volunteer or donate go to oregondogrescue.org to learn more.Lastly, there's Oregon Humane Society who are the largest animal welfare organization in the Northwest and offer a wide variety of services from pet adoption, training, humane law enforcement, veterinary care, humane education, and disaster response. Quasi - Doomscrollers from the 2023 album Breaking the Balls of History on Sub Pop. "Doomscrollers" is a new single from the indie rock duo Quasi, the project of former partners Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss, off their upcoming album Breaking The Balls Of History which is set to be released in February and is their first full-length in a decade. The song is a commentary on the modern phenomenon of doomscrolling, where people compulsively consume negative news and social media, leading to feelings of anxiety and despair. The lyrics of the song also touch on themes of addiction and isolation, painting a bleak yet relatable portrait of the 21st century. The song opens with a punchy guitar riff, and Coomes's lyrics paint a picture of the current state of society, of people sleeping in their cars, teenage TikTok stars, and everyone baking bread, doomscrolling, and going out of their heads. Weiss, famed former Sleater-Kinney drummer, adds an upbeat, energetic feel to the song that belies the dark lyricism. The lyrics of the song are relatable and dig right into the anxieties of our divisive, COVID-contorted culture. The music video for the song is directed by B.A. Miale and is visually striking, taking Weiss and Coomes into psychedelic territory, facing death, the apocalypse, pies, penguins, and more. Slang - Chipped Tooth from the 2022 album Cockroach In A Ghost Town on Kill Rock Stars. In one of the most ultimate Northwest powergroup collaborations to come in recent history, Slang seemingly appeared out of nowhere. In fact, Drew Grow and Janet Weiss (the latter needing no introduction and Grow being a IYKYK frontman of Modern Kin and the Pastors' Wives and in-demand producer) have been slowly working on Slang for over a decade. Bringing with them a bevy of notable names for their first record Cockroach In a Ghost Town, including Kathy Foster (Roseblood, The Thermals) on bass and Anita Lee Elliot (Viva Voce) as well as appearances from Sam Coomes (Quasi), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), and Mary Timony (Helium, Ex Hex, Wild Flag), it's a who's who of the Northwest Gen X scene. Our Song of the Day, “Chipped Tooth,” is an existentialist viewpoint of examining all the rough edges of yourself - be it your ragged brain, running wild with thoughts that slip into darkness quicker than you'd like, or the jagged points of a chipped tooth - always existing but not always noticeable until it's the only part of you that you can think about. “I think it's more our mutual appreciation of music that grabs you and grabs hold and shakes you to the core,” explained Weiss to KEXP's Eva Walker during their in-studio recorded in July. “I think we feel like this band has that potential to kind of get inside a person a give them strength and hope and just a joie de vive. Things get really hard and I feel like music is our saving grace so we all kind of look to music to lift us up.” Watch said in-studio and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was so obvious that everyone else felt it, too. Janet talks about how many lessons she took before joining a band and opening for The Flaming Lips! She also explains her move to Portland, starting a few other bands, like Quasi, who ended up being Elliot Smith's band for a bit. We also talk about joining Sleater-Kinney, her terrible car accident that could have spelled the end of her career. But she had an incredible support system of family, friends, & fans that kept her recovery on track. We do talk about Slang's album, how things have changed from a duo doing covers to a full band. “I've always been in more than one band,” Janet Weiss notes. Even during the nearly two-and-a-half decades she spent as one-third of Sleater Kinney, she's kept busy. Since 1993, she's been half of Quasi and had overlapping stints with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks and Wild Flag – to make no mention of the albums she's performed for indie rock darlings like The Shins and Bright Eyes. When we sat down to speak, she was prepping for a joint tour as Quasi and the drummer for Jon Spencer's latest project, the Hitmakers. The shows coincide with the release of Cockroach In A Small Town, the debut LP from Slang, a project that also features Drew Grow, Kathy Foster and Anita Lee Elliot. It's a lot, all at once, but after rehabbing from a serious car accident, followed by a two-year pandemic fueled hiatus, Weiss is more than ready to get back at it. 3B Productions: October 1-2, Stone Productions:November 5th & 6th One fateful night, Brad Majors and his fiancée, Janet Weiss — a wholesome, well-behaved, utterly normal young couple in love — innocently set out to visit an old professor. Unfortunately for them, this night out is destined to be one they will never forget. A thunderstorm and a flat-tire force them to seek help at the castle of Dr. Frank 'N' Furter, an alien, transvestite scientist with a manic genius and insatiable libido. Brad, Janet, and Frank' N' Furter's cohorts are swept up into the scientist's latest experiment. The night's misadventures will cause Brad and Janet to question everything they've known about themselves, each other, love, and lust. A loving homage to the classic B sci-fi film and horror genres with an irresistible rock'n'roll score, The Rocky Horror Show is a hilarious, wild ride that no audience will soon forget.

Now that she's back at the kit, Janet tells us why every performance needs to be a one-of-a-kind experience & why following your passion is key to feeling like your true self.  Amy gives us her thoughts on the power of community support in recovery & how the pandemic uniquely disabled family & friends from supporting their loved ones in need. Back when I was recording Episode 16 (Quasi, Field Studies) with Mariana Timony of Bandcamp Daily, I had promised that there would be a second part of our discussion forthcoming. This is that second part! Mariana and I spent nearly an hour discussing Quasi drummer/vocalist Janet Weiss' other band (though, sadly, one she is no longer a part of), Sleater-Kinney. We each offer our rankings of the band's studio albums and discuss some of our favorite (and least favorite) tracks from each along the way.Note: I made a comment about Sleater Kinney's The Hot Rock reminding me of “mid-period R.E.M.,” and then went on to cite Fables of the Reconstruction and Life's Rich Pageant as specific albums it reminded me of. As soon as I said this, I realized that, by any reasonable definition, those albums were a part of R.E.M.'s early period. I do think of Murmur and Reckoning as constituting a separate era in the band's discography but failed to come up with a better term for the era I was trying to describe (late-early?).Mariana is on Twitter, and you can follow her at @marianatimony. You can find her writing for Bandcamp Daily here, https://daily.bandcamp.com/contributors/mariana-timony, and her newsletter, The Weird Girls Post, here, https://weirdgirlspost.substack.com/. You can find me (Al) on Twitter at @almelchiorBB or at the account I created for this show, @youmealbum. Especially in music, men can inhabit outlandish characters, be scary, sexual, narcotized, mysterious – think David Bowie, Prince, Lou Reed, Keith Richards. Male musicians who get wasted and sleep with teenage groupies are “rock stars” but a woman musician who pushes sexual boundaries onstage is a whore. It is a double standard that keeps women in a sort of ghetto.

As Brownstein says, "I really think Sleater-Kinney is a singular band with no clear predecessor or successor, so I don't think we started out creating music that you could see the palette of colors that we were using, and maybe draw a lineage." On the first night of a two-night gig at the 9:30 Club, Sleater-Kinney went all-in with its set list. Tracks from the band's monster of a new album, No Cities To Love, felt natural alongside songs like "Oh!" and "Words And Guitar," obliterating the band's timeline by demonstrating a catalog that's always present, always on fire.

A new supergroup featuring Carrie Brownstein (of Sleater-Kinney and NPR's Monitor Mix blog), Janet Weiss (of Sleater-Kinney and Quasi, among others), Mary Timony (of Helium) and Rebecca Cole (of The Minders), WILD FLAG hasn't even released its first single yet. Which means that virtually no one attending NPR Music's SXSW day party at The Parish in Austin, Texas, had heard a note of its rollicking, adventurous pop-rock before walking in the door. Hear the band perform live at NPR Music's SXSW day party from The Parish in Austin, Texas, on March 17, 2011.
