What does the global wine world need to understand about modern China and what will China's role be in the future of fine wine? About Simon Tam: Simon Tam grew up in Australia. He worked in his parents' restaurant which is how he first came into contact with fine wines. After studying at a wine college, Tam worked as a wine consultant for the South Australian government and he even worked as a winemaker for a few years. He eventually moved to Hong Kong, where he opened the first wine school in the early 1990s. As the Chinese market grew, Simon became a bridge between the two worlds, working with winegrowers' associations around the globe to promote the sale of wines in China. Simon Tam would eventually be appointed head of the wine department at Christie's, initially for China and then for the entire Asian region. Ten years later, Simon founded his own fine wine auction house, AEOS Auctions, and a year ago, he also launched a new project: Flavour Colours - a comprehensive wine and food pairing tool. During the past 30 years there's been a growing list of pop and rock musicians trying their hand at musical theater. And they range in style and scope from artists like Cindy Lauper, Dolly Parton, and Elton John to rock bands like The Who, Green Day, and The Go-Go's. Well, today's guest has been venturing into musical theater and is from a band you may not have heard of, but their name is certainly one you're not likely to forget: The Slants. Simon Tam, founder and bassist of the all-Asian rock band, has recently begun a transition from rock star to musical writer, and he shares why this new artistic endeavor is so important to him. But his path up till now has taken some surprising turns... We talk about the bullying he faced as a child just because he's Chinese. He gives the reasons why he and the band turned down not one but two million-dollar contracts. And then there's the famous eight-year trademark battle that ultimately landed him and the band's name at the Supreme Court. It's what has branded Simon as a Troublemaker -- a name he now wears as a badge of honor. Sometimes it involves physical attacks and intimidation or verbal attacks like what Simon had to deal with when he was young (name calling, teasing, and taunting). But it can also be indirect, such as spreading rumors or trying to make others reject someone. More recently, though, technology and social media have created a new venue for bullying that has expanded its reach. Cyberbullying happens online like YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat, where bullies can send hurtful, ongoing messages 24 hours a day. Adult bullying is a thing, too.  Preventing and stopping bullying involves a commitment to creating a safe environment where children can thrive, socially and academically, without being afraid. The same can be said of theaters, rehearsal rooms, on-set, and backstage as well and the importance of providing dependable, non-toxic conditions to do the best work possible. Studies done from the early 2000s found that 30 percent of Americans will be bullied over the course of their careers.      Audition Story The Slants took band membership very seriously, and Simon used to make candidates applying for my band fill out a 4 page questionnaire, then audition on stage in an empty venue while being filmed. Stream of Conscience: Becket's Religious Liberty Podcast

When Asian American rock musician Simon Tam started his band, he never guessed it would bring him to the steps of the Supreme Court. But when the federal trademarking office rejected his band's name, The Slants, saying it was offensive to Asian Americans, it set Simon on a long and frustrating path through the courts. Though it was a free speech case at its heart, Becket weighed in at the Supreme Court to add another layer of consideration—that the trademarking laws were dangerously close to the anti-blasphemy laws the U.S. fights abroad.

Attorney Ron Coleman joins Tim to talk about his U.S. Supreme Court victory for an Asian-American rock band called The Slants over the issue of free speech. Ron details a case that is now a landmark Supreme Court victory for freedom of speech. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Free_Speech_On_Trial_auphonic.mp3 In June of 2017, the U.S. Supreme Court made a decision that marked the end to an eight-year legal battle that pitted the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office against a four-member rock band over their right to choose and trademark their name. The name? “The Slants.” Officially, the case is called “United States Patent and Trademark Office versus Tam.” The issue was the Trademark Office’s decision to prohibit the registration of a trademark “which may disparage…persons, living or dead, institutions, beliefs, or national symbols or bring them into contempt, or disrepute.” We’re going to talk to our guest Ron Coleman today about precisely what that means in everyday language. But the key thing to remember here, as in so many cases where the Supreme Court has come down on matters of free speech – it has come down on the side of protecting freedom of expression even if that expression is offensive to some. Ron Coleman is careful to point out, that an idea cannot be prohibited just because that idea may be offensive to some. Are you tired of seeing the same people at your shows and want to play to a new crowd, even in your hometown? If you're like most musicians, you know that you absolutely can do better, that you have more fans out there than who actually show up at at the venue, and despite always receiving positive feedback, you don't know why more people aren't showing up. If you have a great show that people thoroughly enjoy, you're off to a great start. However, these days it simply isn't enough.
