featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 3264: Henry Darger Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 12 April 2026, is Henry Darger.Henry Joseph Darger Jr. ( DAR-ghər; April 12, 1892 – April 13, 1973) was an American janitor and hospital worker who became known after his death for his immense body of art and literature.Darger was raised by his disabled father in Chicago. Frequently in fights, he was put into a charity home as his father's health declined, and in 1904 was sent to a children's asylum in Lincoln, Illinois, officially due to his masturbation. He began making escape attempts after his father's death in 1908, and in 1910 was able to escape, walking much of the way to Chicago. As an adult he did menial jobs for several hospitals, interrupted by a brief stint in the U. S. Army during World War I. He spent much of his life in poverty and in later life was a recluse in his apartment. A devout Catholic, Darger attended Mass multiple times each day and collected religious memorabilia. Retiring in 1963 due to chronic pain, he was moved into a charity nursing home in late 1972, shortly before his death. During this move, his landlords Kiyoko and Nathan Lerner discovered his artwork and writings, which he had kept secret over decades of work. From around the early 1910s to the late 1930s, Darger wrote the 15,145-page novel In the Realms of the Unreal, centered on a rebellion of child slaves on a fantastical planet. The chief protagonists are the Vivian Girls, who fight to free the children from the enslaving Glandelinians. Inspired by the American Civil War and martyrdom stories, it features lengthy, gruesome descriptions of battles, many ending with the mass killing of rebel children. Between 1912 and 1925, Darger produced collages, often only loosely correlated to the book. Later he made these with watercolors and traced figures taken from popular sources such as magazines and children's books. These paintings grew more elaborate over time, with some of his largest works exceeding 10 feet (3 m) in length. Little girls, often in combat, are a primary focus; for unknown reasons, they are frequently depicted naked and exclusively with male genitalia. Other writings by Darger include a roughly 8,000-page unfinished sequel to In the Realms of the Unreal entitled Further Adventures of the Vivian Girls in Chicago, a decade-long daily weather journal, and The History of My Life—consisting of a 206-page autobiography followed by several thousand pages about the destruction caused by a fictional Illinois tornado.Darger made no efforts to publish his work, and it was unknown to others until shortly before his death. He is frequently associated with the outsider art movement, which encompasses the work of self-taught creators outside the mainstream art community who frequently produce very singular and unusual work. His art was popularized by his former landlords and is now featured in many museum collections, with the largest at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City and the Intuit Art Museum in Chicago. Initial critical analysis of him and his work took a psychoanalytical approach, often focused on his many depictions of nude and brutalized children. Scholars have hypothesized several different psychological conditions Darger may have suffered from. Theories from earlier scholars that he was a pedophile or murderer have been discredited. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:46 UTC on Sunday, 12 April 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Henry Darger on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Emma.

Blasting Tchaikovsky at 5:00 in the morning, Billy Joel‘s next level move, and deep cuts from grocery store's playlists. Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls, The Babies, Cassie Ramone) Cassie Ramone- “Sweetheart LP”: https://www.cassieramone.com/store "Perhaps Ramone's most unexpected move so far is breaking a five-year silence with a surprise video essay album, Sweetheart, uploaded to YouTube days after it was completed. Composed of 11 DIY phone vignettes filmed verité style by Ramone, the footage is raw and diaristic and is soundtracked by the album in its entirety. Despite her lengthy discography with band projects, Sweetheart is only Ramone's second solo album; but it's possibly her best record to date, the culmination of almost two decades of songwriting and honing her sound. Heartbreaking and raw, and featuring her sharpest writing yet, Sweetheart was crafted with collaborator Dylan White from song fragments Ramone sang into a voice recorder over bonfires at night. The finished songs range from distorted, visceral head cleaners like “They Hide Their Eyes” to melancholy starlit waltzes touched by tragedy (“Joy To The World”) to some of the catchiest songs Ramone's ever written—take “Together” or the Mac Demarco-featuring “The Only Way I Know How” as examples. Recorded at White's Valley Structures studio on frequent trips south to Richmond, Virginia—Ramone lives in Brooklyn—Sweetheart peels back the curtain, just a little, on the swirling, creative energy at the heart of Cassie Ramone's music. What's revealed is a frankness and emotional truth that's always been there, informed by classic American songwriting and years of freewheeling living. That Ramone has released it on her own label—created with White in true DIY fashion—should come as no surprise." In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

This week the boys talk about the girls - it's doo wop time and we start with the fabulous Chantels and their 1957 debut, "He's Gone" (1:32). Picture perfect in every way, from Arlene Smith's powerful voice and glittering, subtle songwriting to the beautiful backing from Lois, Sonia, Jackie, and Renee. A real Teenage Symphony to God! In 1964, podcast favourite The Royalettes adopted the song and here's where the strings come in (Teddy Randazzo's, that is ...)  (1:00:45). Sheila Ross skips and jumps with the song's heartbroken lyrics - they knew the song well because it's what they sung when they competed (and won!) in talent contests. By 1980, the song's sorrow transformed into joyful nostalgia with Syreeta's stylin' version (1:32:24)- it reminds us of Deniece Williams, so we like it a lot. Finally, in 2010, Brooklyn's Vivian Girls brought the song back to the Boroughs where it was born (1:57:54). Because it 's the final quaver in this quartet, we go off on some crucial digressions, but this one is spectrally pretty and includes some nice atmospheric guitar ... Jammin on the one!!

Melissa began recording bedroom demos of her songs and eventually released We Are Free in early 2013, and then debuted her album Stoked on You in December 2014. After a brief break from releases, the stars aligned in July 2018 and the new era of The Aquadolls commenced with Jacqueline Proctor on drums and Keilah Nina on bass . The band grew as a powerful threesome leading up to the release of The Aquadolls highly anticipated second album, The Dream and the Deception, recorded and self-produced by Brooks and self-released October 28, 2018 on Aqua Babe Records. Following their sophomore album, they have self-released the single Suck on This in summer 2019, followed by their viral cover of Lash's Take Me Away in October 2020. In July 2021, The Aquadolls signed to indie label Enci Records and released their latest single Disappearing Girl. OUTSIDER, the amazing story of Henry Darger

“In the Realms of the Unreal” is Henry Darger's masterpiece. A 15 000 pages novel, which he later transposed to hundreds of paintings. In this imaginary world, seven sisters who go by the name of the Vivian Girls lead the rebellion of enslaved children against adult men. Darger often draws the Vivian Girls naked and sometimes with male genitalia. His obsessive and subversive representation of little girls was often met with backlash, some critics even calling him a paedophile. In this episode, art historian Leisa Rundquist analyses Henry Darger's portrayal of girlhood as perhaps one of the most misunderstood aspects of his art. This podcast series was created by Philippe Cohen Solal, written by Clémentine Spiler and produced by César Depouilly for ¡Ya Basta! Patty Schemel special talking about her life in music with David Eastaugh Patricia Schemel is an American drummer and musician who rose to prominence as the drummer of alternative rock band Hole from 1992 until 1998. Born in Los Angeles, Schemel was raised in rural Marysville, Washington, where she developed an interest in punk rock music as a teenager. She began drumming at age eleven, and while in high school, formed several bands with her brother, Larry. Schemel was recommended as a drummer to Hole frontwoman Courtney Love by her husband, Kurt Cobain, a friend of Schemel's. She formally joined the band in 1992, and performed on their critically acclaimed second album, Live Through This (1994). On the band's third release, Celebrity Skin (1998), Schemel was replaced by a session drummer after its producer, Michael Beinhorn, convinced Love that Schemel was unable to adequately perform during their recording sessions. Though she receives credit on the album, her drumming does not appear on the final tracks, and the event marked her departure from the band. For the band's subsequent tour, Schemel was replaced by Samantha Maloney. After leaving Hole, Schemel developed a significant crack cocaine addiction, and was homeless for a time. In the early 2000s, she became sober and reunited with Love, joining the short-lived group Bastard before drumming on Love's debut solo album, America's Sweetheart (2004). Schemel subsequently drummed for Juliette and the Licks, appearing on their EP ...Like a Bolt of Lightning (2004). In 2010, using concert and video diary footage from Hole's 1994–1995 Live Through This world tour, Schemel co-created Hit So Hard, a documentary chronicling her time in Hole, her overcoming substance abuse, as well her subsequent business operating a dog boarding business. In 2013, she joined the indie rock group Upset, formed by Ali Koehler, previously of Vivian Girls and Best Coast, and formed the band Death Valley Girls with her brother, Larry, the same year.

Happy 2020! I got married in 2019 which was pretty incredible, but otherwise the year was mighty rough in all sorts of ways for all sorts of people. Luckily, music continues to be amazing and it always seems to be there to lift everyone back up when they need it the most. EPISODE #79 of Random Old Records Podcast is here to start off the new year right with an hour of that sweet, sweet musical nectar!Loveland, Ohio-based Colemine Records was the hands-down label of the year, putting out a steady string of soulful and thoughtful LPs and 45s. So, it makes sense to feature a stack of jams from their catalog, including the Harlem Gospel Travelers, Thee Sinseers, and Black Pumas. Vivian Girls came back after a long absence with an incredible new album, and you will also hear the crucial "I'm Far Away" on this episode (plus more in the future, it's REALLY good). In between, there are a bunch of new and old jams from Opal, Possible Humans, Chromatics, Death and Vanilla, plus so much more. You might have also noticed that a bunch of older episodes have been added to the feed, and more are on the way, so stay tuned for more vintage shows and great new stuff in 2020!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. Transgression vs. transcendence: Elizabeth Hand's brand-new novel, Curious Toys (Mulholland Books), explores artistic and cultural taboos through the lens of a serial killer mystery set in the amusement parks of Progressive Era Chicago. We talk about her inspiration for making outsider artist/writer Henry Darger one of the lead characters of Curious Toys, how she first heard about Darger and the Vivian Girls mythology he created in his paintings and 15,000-page (!) novel, the striking similarities between Darger and Tolkien, the tragedy of outsider/visionary artists, and the challenge of casting a nonbinary character a century in the past (the novel's other lead, not Darger). We also get into why writers have no control over the success of their books, the differences between writing on spec vs. on contract, some hints about her next Cass Neary novel, the time she outdrew Deepak Chopra at a bookstore signing, and more! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal
