Blasting Tchaikovsky at 5:00 in the morning, Billy Joel‘s next level move, and deep cuts from grocery store's playlists. Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls, The Babies, Cassie Ramone) Cassie Ramone- “Sweetheart LP”: https://www.cassieramone.com/store "Perhaps Ramone's most unexpected move so far is breaking a five-year silence with a surprise video essay album, Sweetheart, uploaded to YouTube days after it was completed. Composed of 11 DIY phone vignettes filmed verité style by Ramone, the footage is raw and diaristic and is soundtracked by the album in its entirety. Despite her lengthy discography with band projects, Sweetheart is only Ramone's second solo album; but it's possibly her best record to date, the culmination of almost two decades of songwriting and honing her sound. Heartbreaking and raw, and featuring her sharpest writing yet, Sweetheart was crafted with collaborator Dylan White from song fragments Ramone sang into a voice recorder over bonfires at night. The finished songs range from distorted, visceral head cleaners like “They Hide Their Eyes” to melancholy starlit waltzes touched by tragedy (“Joy To The World”) to some of the catchiest songs Ramone's ever written—take “Together” or the Mac Demarco-featuring “The Only Way I Know How” as examples. Recorded at White's Valley Structures studio on frequent trips south to Richmond, Virginia—Ramone lives in Brooklyn—Sweetheart peels back the curtain, just a little, on the swirling, creative energy at the heart of Cassie Ramone's music. What's revealed is a frankness and emotional truth that's always been there, informed by classic American songwriting and years of freewheeling living. That Ramone has released it on her own label—created with White in true DIY fashion—should come as no surprise." In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

This week the boys talk about the girls - it's doo wop time and we start with the fabulous Chantels and their 1957 debut, "He's Gone" (1:32). Picture perfect in every way, from Arlene Smith's powerful voice and glittering, subtle songwriting to the beautiful backing from Lois, Sonia, Jackie, and Renee. A real Teenage Symphony to God! In 1964, podcast favourite The Royalettes adopted the song and here's where the strings come in (Teddy Randazzo's, that is ...)  (1:00:45). Sheila Ross skips and jumps with the song's heartbroken lyrics - they knew the song well because it's what they sung when they competed (and won!) in talent contests. By 1980, the song's sorrow transformed into joyful nostalgia with Syreeta's stylin' version (1:32:24)- it reminds us of Deniece Williams, so we like it a lot. Finally, in 2010, Brooklyn's Vivian Girls brought the song back to the Boroughs where it was born (1:57:54). Because it 's the final quaver in this quartet, we go off on some crucial digressions, but this one is spectrally pretty and includes some nice atmospheric guitar ... Jammin on the one!!

These young women are TALENTED, caring, smart, pro-active FIERCE FEMALES, and they ROCK !! Melissa began recording bedroom demos of her songs and eventually released We Are Free in early 2013, and then debuted her album Stoked on You in December 2014. After a brief break from releases, the stars aligned in July 2018 and the new era of The Aquadolls commenced with Jacqueline Proctor on drums and Keilah Nina on bass . The band grew as a powerful threesome leading up to the release of The Aquadolls highly anticipated second album, The Dream and the Deception, recorded and self-produced by Brooks and self-released October 28, 2018 on Aqua Babe Records. Following their sophomore album, they have self-released the single Suck on This in summer 2019, followed by their viral cover of Lash's Take Me Away in October 2020. In July 2021, The Aquadolls signed to indie label Enci Records and released their latest single Disappearing Girl. Having opened for artists like Pennywise, Kate Nash, Vivian Girls, and X, playing festivals with Weezer, Rancid, Cat Power, and FIDLAR, touring with White Reaper, as well as headlining North American tours and playing local California shows, The Aquadolls are in-your-face and good vibes all at once with energetic performances that leave you anticipating the next show. OUTSIDER, the amazing story of Henry Darger

“In the Realms of the Unreal” is Henry Darger's masterpiece. A 15 000 pages novel, which he later transposed to hundreds of paintings. In this imaginary world, seven sisters who go by the name of the Vivian Girls lead the rebellion of enslaved children against adult men. Darger often draws the Vivian Girls naked and sometimes with male genitalia. His obsessive and subversive representation of little girls was often met with backlash, some critics even calling him a paedophile. In this episode, art historian Leisa Rundquist analyses Henry Darger's portrayal of girlhood as perhaps one of the most misunderstood aspects of his art. This podcast series was created by Philippe Cohen Solal, written by Clémentine Spiler and produced by César Depouilly for ¡Ya Basta! Patty Schemel special talking about her life in music with David Eastaugh Patricia Schemel is an American drummer and musician who rose to prominence as the drummer of alternative rock band Hole from 1992 until 1998. Born in Los Angeles, Schemel was raised in rural Marysville, Washington, where she developed an interest in punk rock music as a teenager. She began drumming at age eleven, and while in high school, formed several bands with her brother, Larry. Schemel was recommended as a drummer to Hole frontwoman Courtney Love by her husband, Kurt Cobain, a friend of Schemel's. She formally joined the band in 1992, and performed on their critically acclaimed second album, Live Through This (1994). On the band's third release, Celebrity Skin (1998), Schemel was replaced by a session drummer after its producer, Michael Beinhorn, convinced Love that Schemel was unable to adequately perform during their recording sessions. Though she receives credit on the album, her drumming does not appear on the final tracks, and the event marked her departure from the band. For the band's subsequent tour, Schemel was replaced by Samantha Maloney. After leaving Hole, Schemel developed a significant crack cocaine addiction, and was homeless for a time. In the early 2000s, she became sober and reunited with Love, joining the short-lived group Bastard before drumming on Love's debut solo album, America's Sweetheart (2004). Schemel subsequently drummed for Juliette and the Licks, appearing on their EP ...Like a Bolt of Lightning (2004). In 2010, using concert and video diary footage from Hole's 1994–1995 Live Through This world tour, Schemel co-created Hit So Hard, a documentary chronicling her time in Hole, her overcoming substance abuse, as well her subsequent business operating a dog boarding business. In 2013, she joined the indie rock group Upset, formed by Ali Koehler, previously of Vivian Girls and Best Coast, and formed the band Death Valley Girls with her brother, Larry, the same year.

Luckily, music continues to be amazing and it always seems to be there to lift everyone back up when they need it the most. EPISODE #79 of Random Old Records Podcast is here to start off the new year right with an hour of that sweet, sweet musical nectar!Loveland, Ohio-based Colemine Records was the hands-down label of the year, putting out a steady string of soulful and thoughtful LPs and 45s. So, it makes sense to feature a stack of jams from their catalog, including the Harlem Gospel Travelers, Thee Sinseers, and Black Pumas. Vivian Girls came back after a long absence with an incredible new album, and you will also hear the crucial "I'm Far Away" on this episode (plus more in the future, it's REALLY good). In between, there are a bunch of new and old jams from Opal, Possible Humans, Chromatics, Death and Vanilla, plus so much more. You might have also noticed that a bunch of older episodes have been added to the feed, and more are on the way, so stay tuned for more vintage shows and great new stuff in 2020!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. Transgression vs. transcendence: Elizabeth Hand's brand-new novel, Curious Toys (Mulholland Books), explores artistic and cultural taboos through the lens of a serial killer mystery set in the amusement parks of Progressive Era Chicago. We talk about her inspiration for making outsider artist/writer Henry Darger one of the lead characters of Curious Toys, how she first heard about Darger and the Vivian Girls mythology he created in his paintings and 15,000-page (!) novel, the striking similarities between Darger and Tolkien, the tragedy of outsider/visionary artists, and the challenge of casting a nonbinary character a century in the past (the novel's other lead, not Darger). We also get into why writers have no control over the success of their books, the differences between writing on spec vs. on contract, some hints about her next Cass Neary novel, the time she outdrew Deepak Chopra at a bookstore signing, and more! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

The Toy Trucks bring us a fine ol' taste of Memphis cynicism

The Toy Trucks have a new LP out next week. We've been lucky enough to have been granted access to a track or two before its release on September 6th. It's Jeremy Scott's brainchild and these ageing rockers are stirring up Memphis in the US. The Mama Cass inspired LP title is a precursor to a much awaited release. However, The Toy Trucks is not our only pre-release this week. Secondly to their track we have a bookend (and pre-release) from Vivian Girls. Join your resident hosts, Tobin and Richard, and The Toy Trucks, and Vivian Girls and other great artistes. Shovels and Rope bring us round to Birmingham. Tobin discusses his recent work in The Bearded Pig forge where he discussed with ironmonger Spike the respective talents of Shovels and Rope, The Devil Makes Three, Caamp et al. Importantly, Spike has a cracking Listener Suggestion for us in a fortnight's time so listen out for that. Talkboy is Wasting Time and results in some discussion about movies Richard hasn't seen. Coincidentally, so does our double and final Woodstock homage this week. Slaves make a return to the show with track 1 off side 2 of the famously limited edition 4-track EP. We don't play it from the vinyl, however, as Richard is coveting the unopened vinyl package with fervent determination. It's a strange old affair this track in comparison to the punk rock thrasher we had last week. We think you'll be surprised, nay, amazed. Weird Milk is our New Music Shot on today's show. You could have heard direct upon its release a few weeks ago here. Woodstock - the final journey This week, our final nod to the legendary Woodstock festival, now celebrating its 50th anniversary, we pull up two tracks. Firstly, the enigmatic Sha Na Na both parody and yet resurrect interest in the 1950s music scene. Secondly, '60s icon and all-round gentle human being John B. Sebastian seems to eloquently add the closing notes to the decade. Sha Na Na were the penultimate performance at Woodstock, playing early on the Monday morning, August 18th. A short 30 minute set from 7:30am to 8:00am that ushered in the now legendary performance from Jimi Hendrix. Less than a year later Jimi was dead and his death signalled an end to the euphoria and hope of a generation and a close on the '60s. Dance (If You Wanna) Vivian Girls At The Hop Sha Na Na Wasting Time Talkboy The Velvet Ditch Slaves Honey I'm Around Weird Milk I'm On The Dish But I ain't No Rag The Toy Trucks Rainbows All Over Your Blues John B. Sebastian Sick Vivian Girls The Toy Trucks - the lowdown The Toy Trucks are collectively 180+ years old and are fueled by equal parts cheap beer, cheap thrills and Cheap Trick. Over the band’s multi-year existence, songwriter/leader Jeremy Scott (ex-Reigning Sound) has developed an “anything but another crappy love song” ethos which has resulted in the songs on the band’s first full-length, Rockets Bells and Poetry. Over the course of said album, the band (Scott, guitarist Dylan Cranmer, bassist Ryno Hanson and drummer Steve Barnat) prove conversant with, among other things, Rascals-like blue-eyed grooves (Don’t Be So Easy), grisly true crime balladry (57 Bayview), updated Del Shannonesque psychodrama (Hot Tears) and honest flat out rock and roll (I’m on the Dish But I Ain’t No Rag). As both a stand-alone statement and a teaser for the band’s revved up live show, Rockets Bells and Poetry should satisfy anyone’s rock/garage/power-pop itch quite nicely. We stole the title from Mama Cass Elliott Jeremy Scott What does FTBOTRB think of The Toy Trucks? Here at Record Box HQ we've been eagerly awaiting this release to arrive and there is only a week left now. We've been treated to this pre-release and have consumed it with gusto. The band's enthusiasm shines through on the track I'm On The Dish But I Ain't No Rag. It's far from contrived and over-produced, displaying the trademark Black & Wyatt touch of honesty and purity that seems to accompany every new release from the label. The guitar has a definite nod to the great Wilko Johnson but the song has an overall American feel. Scott's vocals cut straight through the noise and this track is in fifth gear right off the bat. It's a brilliant introduction to what is sure to be a must-have full length LP. You can go pre-order the record here and you'll be treated to a few more songs off the LP early - like right now! What are you waiting for? Love music? Well, so do we! From the Bottom of the Record Box is the music podcast dedicated to celebrating the overlooked, forgotten and underrepresented artists making great music and not getting the platform they deserve. Horris: Horris have been kicking around the local scene since 2011, demonstrating their high energy performances that involve a heavy element of crowd participation. Their debut EP ‘You Can’t Do Anything And Life Will Disappoint You’ is a 7 song compilation of their ability to combine chaotic drums, buzzing guitars, and scratchy vocals to make a high energy record that is sure to get the heart beating. Feathers: Starting off in 2006, this psychedelic witchgaze group have released a full length album through record label bon voyage, and accumulated a mountain of support slots for international bands like Best Coast, Earthless, and Vivian Girls. Their album ‘Hunters Moon’ was recorded over three hours in the now defunct Tribal Theatre, and their sound is a perfect balance of 60’s psychedelica and jangly 80’s pop.

Oh wow, is it really May already? Well, according to the calendar it is, so here's EPISODE #31 of Random Old Records! April was an amazing month for rock n' roll, and I spent it buying a whole pile of records and getting my face melted off at live shows by the Black Lips, Vivian Girls, Ty Segall, The Fresh and Onlys, The Black Angels, Davila 666, Magic Jake and The Power Crystals, and YOWZA! Yeah, luckily a whole buncha sweet bands played around Cincinnati and got a fantastic turnout each time, so hopefully that bodes well for the summer and we'll be seeing even more coming soon!Anyway, Random Old Records #31 is loaded with an hour of new rock n' roll, including a BRAND NEW track from glam pop wizard King Tuff, fresh off a recent Scion A/V split single with the Hex Dispensers. It's called "Hands" and it sounds like a long lost Slade song. His upcoming LP is gonna be something else! The featured label this time around is Trouble In Mind, who should get some kinda award for putting out dozens of records without a single bad one in the bunch! This time around, you'll hear a track from each of their latest releases (Wrong Words, The Paperhead, Jeffrey Novak, and Alex Cuervo), plus Mean Jeans doing a TORRID Sparks cover from the TiM Record Store Day split 7"! That The Paperhead LP is freakin' amazing, by the way. It's a buncha 18 year old kids channeling vintage 60s psych pop through a 90s Elephant 6 lens and wrapping it all in a haze of youthful vigor and pie-eyed optimism. Not to be missed!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! balazo:  Everything Goes Wrong Contenido:  La tercia originaria de Brooklyn presenta su segunda producción discográfica "Everything Goes Wrong", misma que reseñaron track por track EN EXCLUSIVA para WARP.com.mx. Audio:  Tracklist_16_viviangirls_01.mp3

The sweat continues to drip from my fingers and on to tasty new platters of wax as Vancouver is pummeled with a heat wave. The show kicked off this week with some serious feminine heat, courtesy of midnight disco-murk goddess Nite Jewel, a new CDR of outtakes by the Magik Markers taken from their recently released 'Balf Quarry' LP, the new tightly wound Little Claw on Ecstatic Peace, and a new re-issue from Grouper. No wonder my palms were so sweaty in the booth this week.New 10"er by Nerve City has been receiving many hits at home, and I couldn't be more excited for a full length LP from them due in the coming months from local label Sweet Rot. Stay tuned for more on them...Managed to snake a copy of the limited to 200 cassette (sold only at the Captured Tracks/Woodsist fest that happened a few weeks back in NYC) by the Fresh and Onlys. Wow, can that band ever punp out the tuneful garage kickers. Two 7"s, two cassettes, an LP all in one year? Scratch that...two LPs. New full length of all unreleased material due out on Woodsist sometime in September. Band of the year?Ty Segall continues his onslaught of 2009 with a handful of 7"s, a new full length and a split LP with the UK's Black Time. West Coast tour coming from the one-man wonder. Have to fit that into my schedule somewhere along the lines...Coupla' new-ish numbers popped in the mail from the burgeoning Almost Ready label. The new Pink Noise is worth the peeping, but the best of the batch is the 'World Is Lousy With Ideas Vol. 8', which contains the best Blank Dogs song I've e'er laid ears on (played on this show, thanks to Grimmertown for heppin' me that one), not to mention exclusive tracks by Pink Reason, Times New Viking, Vivian Girls, Sic Alps, and a heap of others. This one won't stick around for too much longer. Finally got to lay my hands on a copy of the Amen Dunes LP, which is slowly making it's way up the ladder of best of '09. A lot of acoustic-based lo-fi downer-pop. It's a mouthful but worth the investigatin'.Moon Duo, which is Ripley the guitarist from Wooden Shjips, continues on down the trail being burned by his mothership. Get a hold of Aquarius Records for this one, as it seems to be disappearing fast. New Blues Control finally made it's way up to Canada, and was it ever worth the wait. 4 tracks of molten psych, submerged and raised up in all the right spots. Not quite as tops as Puff, but a necessary piece of future psych.Squeezed in a nice spotlight on Indiana cassette label El Tule, which just released the Ducktails side-project Parasails. More drifting beach psych from the reigning king. El Tule has also been pumping out some other great cassettes, two of which are highlighted below. Anyone interested in some Parasails action should drop a comment below.Until next week, keep yer records out of the sun.
