Today, we've got another segment of the podcast called Big Fat Five. This is where I invite my favorite drummers on the show to break down the five records that helped shape their approach to the instrument. This format also inspired my book, Drummers on Drumming, which is available now as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. Today's guest is Jared Shavelson. I met Jared through a mutual buddy and Big Fat Five alum, Mike Robinson. Jared is the real deal. He studied jazz in college but left early to kickstart his career—and it's safe to say that decision paid off. Over the years, he's played with Seal, The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, Joyce Manor, The Hope Conspiracy, Paint It Black, The Aquabats, and so many others. I just saw him perform with Mariachi El Bronx on New Year's Eve, opening for Morrissey at The Palladium. He was playing a cocktail kit, and the Afro-Cuban rhythms he was laying down were absolutely insane—I was completely blown away. Now, we were supposed to record this a few days ago, but life in LA had other plans. Between the fires and travel chaos, it was hard to pin down a time. Jared ended up flying out of Los Angeles Thursday night, only to get stuck in Atlanta during a snowstorm when his flight was canceled. After being stranded at the airport for 18 hours, he decided to help pass the time by hopping on the mic with me. That's why the audio in this episode might be a little rough—picture Jared huddled in the corner of a busy terminal while we recorded. --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!

The NFL Draft is in Detroit! Is that fun? Govier is learning about the Oakland County Child Killer which seems to be an unsolved mystery that doesn't get as much attention as it should considering true crime is all the rage. Govier got the yeahs updated from previous episodes. Get ready for plenty of Collective Soul yeahs. The United States government is making TikTok an enemy of the state when it isn't & the feds can spy on anybody in the country at any time making the 4th amendment a moot point. Did you know that Julia Fox was Josh Safdie's muse for the movie Uncut Gems? We got your emails! Travis is pissed that Govier unfairly labeled him a Wild Hogs fan. Which movie would you be pissed about being incorrectly labeled as enjoying? Finn Gurrer is learning a lot about Third Eye Blind's Semi-Charmed Life while also putting a decision to the show related to numerical musical artists. Remember Bowling For Soup? Steve wants to talk about opioids, but we're tabling it for another day when Govier is fully prepped. Steve proves that American universities are not bastions of knowledge leading the way toward a more developed future. Govier has Mr. Show fever which means there are multiple Mr. Show skits coming your way on this episode. Did you know about the connection between Mr. Show & Blink-182? East Palestine's train derailment settlement has been set at $600 million. As the show closes Govier has a sad story about a former co-worker who deserves to be remembered forever. Then Luke shares a recent event about a good friend in California who isn't here anymore. Powerful stuff. We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with Rookie by Boy Sets Fire. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Iron Roses over Zoom video! The Iron Roses are a passionate, unique, and beautiful group of people making music that we hope will change the world. Fueled by the injustices of our current times - their songs are the kind of protest anthems that only a group of seasoned musicians could make. Still angry, still driven, and still screaming – this is a band that will never give up the fight. It takes serious talent to write and sing songs that sound angry whilst the music lifts your spirits. So much of political punk is abrasive and unpleasant. No hooks. No melodies. But other times passionate and irate words sound incongruent with emotionless and insipid music. The Iron Roses manage something rare and commanding with music that lifts the heart coupled powerfully with lyrics that express fury and resentment of the current world.Punk as a genre has been so commodified and diluted over the last decades that it seems to be ever increasingly hard to find bands that resonate this way. That sing and play with such intensity that their authenticity cannot be questioned. That prove that true punk is alive and well and can have you dancing around your kitchen singing along at the top of your voice.Yes, we can discuss their pedigree, most notably their frontperson Nathan Gray (of Boysetsfire), and their relentless touring and political activism. But none of those things matter if the songs don't connect with the listener. And this collection of songs are going to do just that. From the opening notes of the first song the cards are on the table. The objective is clear – The Iron Roses are putting to words and music all the thoughts you've had these last few dark years. With the worldwide political climate leaning further and further from the left. With rights for many being limited and destroyed. With no end in sight. We need bands like The Iron Roses giving us a soundtrack to fight. Songs to pour our anger and frustration into when we sing along - just as they did when they wrote and recorded them – and will be doing so from stage when they hit the road hard this autumn. The beauty of seeing these six individuals singing their truth is astounding. Watching them grow from strength to strength in the last few years it is unsurprising that this record is the outcome. They, and their songs, represent such power, love, and passion – something that we need more than ever in this world today. We want to hear from you! We read some texts messages from our show text thread. Luke is a little shy, but definitely the most verbose of the three. Scott gets in between a bickering match between Luke and Mike. Old friends have too much history sometimes. Mike wants only the best for Luke in the end. The wrestling match within our thought process about how much to give to others without sacrificing our own well-being is a powerful and popular one. Can you accept help or are you too proud? Luke is surprised to find out the movie Flight (2012) is an excellent film. Jason Lee has stupid names for his kids. That leads to us talking about the TV show The League and which main actor is the most recognizable. One of those dudes Steve Ranizissi lied about being trapped in the twin towers on 9/11. He sounds like a total turd explaining it to Howard Stern. Jon Lajoie regales us with some of his finest jams. Mike admits to lying plenty when he was younger, but it's more understandable when you're trying to not get in trouble. Teenage Dirtbag is getting a lot of love on TikTok and this reminds the fellas of a bunch of lame post-punk bands from the early 2000s like Bowling For Soup. Finally the fellas get to the latest Woodstock '99 documentary on Netflix. How does it fare against the HBO doc from last summer? Mike warns youngsters to avoid depression if they can help it. Of course your emails get read! Danny and Mr. Pink are share their latest musings about Phillip Seymour Hoffman or student loans. We close the show with When Rhetoric Dies by Boy Sets Fire. 12 - VICTORY RECORDS 1993-2003 FEAT. XTONYBX It's impossible to have a complete conversation about the current state of punk, emo, or hardcore without talking at length about Victory Records. There's arguably no label that's had a bigger impact on these genres – commercially or culturally – than Victory. We're joined by Real 1990s Hardcore Guy Tony B. from Ft. Wayne, IN to discuss Victory's impact on our respective journeys into punk, emo, hardcore, Vegan Straight Edge, and so on. What's more, we dive into Victory's discography during what was roughly the most impactful and ascendant time for the label, 1993-2003. Highlights and heavy hitters include Earth Crisis, Snapcase, Strife, Integrity, Deadguy, Refused, By The Grace Of God, Hatebreed, Catch 22, Shutdown, Blood For Blood, Skarhead, Grade, Buried Alive, Reach The Sky, Boysetsfire, Thursday, Ringworm, Taking Back Sunday, Atreyu, Dead To Fall, Thursday, Streetlight Manifesto, and Spitalfield. Are you more of a Strife - One Truth (1994) guy or a Strife - In This Defiance (1997) guy? Do you like Thursday - Full Collapse (2001) or Thursday - War All The Time (2003) better? Is Systems Overload (1995) the best Integrity record? Much to think about. We end on a sincere note talking about the importance of Vegan Straight Edge in our personal lives. Thank you for listening

Hello my friends! This week, my guest is Nathan Gray, of Boysetsfire and Nathan Gray and The Iron Roses! He's a very authentic and HUMBLE human. This interview literally changed my life for good. I think we both were very honest about what we think could be improved in the punk scene in general, but also how we could improve our own bands, playlists, etc. How it's important to speak about how we want to make the scene more inclusive, but also look at our own behaviors and thoughts. Wow! I really opened my heart about how sad I am sometimes when I notice some people's reactions and how I sometimes don't know how to deal with this. I think we both put a lot of nuances. WOW ! Amazing moment!!!   We also talked about his music projects and how he incorporates different genres in his songs, about his lyrics, touring projects, the new vinyl pressing of the album rebel Songs that will be available on Iodines records in a few weeks, about BSF, etc. This interview is really important for me.    Enjoy! We had the pleasure of interviewing Nathan Gray of Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses, and BoySetsFire over Zoom video!  In support of the new record, Rebel Songs, melodic alt-punk band Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses has just announced a 20-date US tour with BlackGuyFawkes. Kicking off on February 25, 2022 in Providence, RI, the tour winds its way west making several stops out to Milwaukee, WI (3/7), Chicago, IL (3/9), back east with a show in Brooklyn, NY (3/16), and ending in Philadelphia, PA on March 18th.With nearly two years absent from the road, the prospect of upcoming tour dates thrills frontman Nathan Gray.  “It's the connection that I am most excited about,” he smiles. “Any time I am not on the road, there is an intense void in my life because being on stage is like my personal therapy couch. There is a very palpable energy exchange that happens within live music. It's very symbiotic - I need my audience as much as they need me! Not being able to tour for so long was a real challenge for me to stay above the darkness mentally - that's why I wrote the album that I did!”Refusing to allow this confinement due to COVID to block his creativity, Gray and band turned inward to music and created one of their most anthemic and passionate albums to date. Fired up by both the isolation as well as in response to the division caused by the previous administration, they created a stellar album of fists-raised rallying cries. While the tempo and delivery of his current music may not be as aggressively rapid as his output of his hardcore roots in BoySetsFire, the passion and conviction is still very much alive in the alternative Rebel Songs. The 12 track album was produced by Brian McTernan (Thrice, Hot Water Music, Circa Survive) and radiates the roaring renegade energy that the title suggests.  We want to hear from you! LANGUAGE WARNING: I am super excited to launch Move.Breathe.Live. podcast with episode one featuring someone I have long looked up to and respected, originally from his time in the hugely influential band, Boysetsfire, through to his work bringing yoga, meditation and movement to a wider world via social media. Robert Ehrenbrand is a movement, yoga, martial artist who runs Becoming Me yoga and movement who has been playing in punk bands including boysetsfire for most of his life. This conversation takes in discussions around the ideas laid down by yogas and Buddhists and martial artists over the years and brings a way of looking at all of them together to create a practice which works for him and can hopefully also help you build a practice which works for you. A large part of his mediation is via mantra meditation, the repeating of sacred names and phrases, to bring the mind to a place of quiet stillness. Robert has his own mantra project called the sat nam session which is runs with his wife. Here is his bio and you can find out more about Robert by visiting the links below Father. Husband. Yogi. Martial Artist. Business Psychologist. Coach & Trainer. Musician. Robert unites all of these incarnations in order to help others transform & unfold their inner potential. Movement, dynamic breathing, meditation, yoga & martial arts have been his main areas of interest ever since he was a teenager. His passion is to guide and support human beings on the journey to get their physical, mental & emotional bodies aligned for a re-connection with the very process of their lives. BECOMINGME YOGA & MOVEMENT is based on a mixture of asanas, martial arts, dynamic breathing, yogic techniques, free flowing movements, active meditations & sound immersion.
