Ethicist, author and professor, Dr. David Gushee returns to the podcast to talk about his new book: Defending Democracy from its Christian Enemies. They begin talking about what many have called "the Nones," but Gushee calls Conscientious Objectors like Tim Whitaker and Pete Briscoe. (Ken includes himself.) Many of those "Nones" - those who claim to have no religious affiliation - actually find themselves in moral conflict with a religion that has violated its own moral standards. For Gushee (who is a committed Christian) democracy must be defended. Too many Christians are actively and aggressively attacking our democratic institutions all in the name of their God and their Bible. This is not new, and not limited to the United States. Dr. Gushee traces the challenges to democracy in France, Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary and Brazil. He recognizes Christian Nationalism as a threat but prefers his own label: Authoritarian Reactionary Christianity. Adolph Hitler, Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orbán, and Jair Bolsonaro all invite comparisons to Trumpism in the United States. Ken and David talk about characters and players like Pastor Greg Locke, firebrand Tucker Carlson, theologian James Cone and Gushee's mentor, Dr. Glen Stassen. The good professor draws from Baptist history, the Black Church and the biblical teaching around Covenant to invite us all to defend the democracy that guarantees our freedom to exercise our conscience in practicing the religion (or non-religion) of our choice. I came to the conclusion that I could not stay in that role and be healthy. So I chose to be a healthy person over a megachurch pastor, and it was an incredibly hard choice. — Pete Briscoe SHOW NOTES In today's conversation, Steve talks with Pete Briscoe about why Pete no longer calls himself an “evangelical.” You'll hear Pete's story, filled with pain and struggles, as he discovers more beautiful ways to live the Christian life. While you may not agree with his path, we think there's something here to learn in his story. Thank you for joining us in today's conversation! ABOUT PETE BRISCOE After leading Bent Tree Bible Fellowship church for nearly three decades and preaching for Telling the Truth ministry for more than a decade, God led Pete to a new season of life. With his wife Libby, they sold their home, donated most of their stuff, and bought an RV. They drove west into the sunset, took a couple of months to catch their breath, and then started to work from the road. Pete now coaches pastors and business owners/leaders in communications and self-care. He is also the host of the podcast Kindavangelical, a podcast for folks who have spent time in the evangelical culture but it isn't working for them anymore. Someone posted that they googled, “What happened to Pete Briscoe?” Ha, seriously! If you were to google that, you would find a video from March 31, 2019. This is the service where my wife Libby and I shared with our church of 28 1/2 years that we were leaving the ministry. We loved our church and it was incredibly difficult to go. On that video I shared what I felt I could at the time: in episode 2 of Kindavangelical, I want to share more of the story.I'm telling you this because this journey is one of the reasons I no longer think of myself as an evangelical. Many of us find ourselves in this spiritual limbo because of life experiences that mark us and make us question what we have always believed. This is what happened to me.
Recent studies have uncovered a sharp rise in the number of church leaders who have seriously considered leaving full-time ministry. In this episode of Moving Mountains, Pete Briscoe shares the challenges behind pastoral burnout and loneliness. Based on his 20+ years of pastoring, Pete offers advice on how pastors can protect their energy to get through isolation and navigate difficult seasons. After your bad moments—moments when you flat-out blow it—what do you do? Do you isolate yourself? Do you self-condemn? Do you struggle to seek forgiveness and to forgive yourself? In this message from Luke 22, Pete Briscoe talks about the road back to intimacy with Jesus after we feel like we've disqualified ourselves.
It's possible to live around the edge of Christian community instead of actually stepping into it. You can easily go to church every Sunday and not talk to a single person. Or, you can stream a Sunday service and watch it from the comfort of your living room couch. You're free to isolate yourself, you have Jesus, you're going to heaven, and He loves you—none of that will change. But life here on earth is so much better when we share it together! In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from Acts chapter 2 where we learn how to avoid the discontentment, despair, and loneliness that isolation breeds and instead step into a rich and fulfilling life.

In subtle ways, the world often encourages us to go it alone. We are taught to be independent from a young age, and the busyness of life can often leave little margin for genuine relationships. Sometimes rejection and other past wounds—and maybe even sin—keeps us from being part of an authentic community. However, isolation is not what God has in mind for us. He designed us for interdependence, both for our benefit and the benefit of others. Living without community puts us in a dangerous and vulnerable position for Satan's attacks. In this message based on 1 Corinthians 12:11-31, Pete Briscoe teaches about the importance of living life together and shares how a huge slice of the good Life is waiting for you within an authentic, loving, Christ-centered community.
Do you find yourself living for the love and approval of others? Are you looking to others to meet your needs and satisfy your desire for acceptance? Maybe you do the same thing with God—trying to please Him by performing and living well. Remaining in this trap of living to gain His approval will only prevent you from truly experiencing God's outrageous love. In this message, Pete Briscoe shows you how to stop living for God's love and live in it instead. You'll learn how to rest in the love He already has for you instead of spending your life chasing after it.
What keeps you from coming to Jesus? Is it your past or your pride? Are you concerned friends and family will outcast or belittle you for believing in Him? Or do you think you're too far gone for Jesus to accept you? The truth is we're all a mess! We make bad choices that lead to unwelcomed consequences. And sometimes, we run from Jesus because of our shame and brokenness. Jesus sees beyond your messiness and longs to transform your life. In this message, Pete Briscoe helps you break free from whatever might hinder you from coming to Jesus and being restored by His overwhelming love.

It's difficult to understand the heavenly love of Jesus. And so we try to live impressively to win His affection. But there was never a moment in time when Jesus saw something in you and thought ... Hey, that's impressive, I think I'll love him. The truth is Jesus' love for you isn't contingent on your behavior or performance. He has always loved you. Before the creation of time, before the foundation of the world, before you were created—He loved you. In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from Ephesians chapter 3 where the apostle Paul longs for the truth of God's love to come alive inside you, so you can experience a depth of love that you never knew was possible.
Think of the person you love most in this world. Could you ever imagine standing by and doing nothing as your loved one was beaten, humiliated, and murdered? God stood by and watched all these things happen to His beloved Son, Jesus. He allowed it because of His love for you! Does that reality move you? Does it give you a hint of His passionate love for you? In this message, Pete Briscoe unwraps Ephesians to help you understand your worth to God so you can experience the overflowing love and grace that He has for His beloved children.

God didn't randomly decide to love you. He deliberately chose you out of a deep passionate love. Deuteronomy 7:6 says, The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. When the world leaves you feeling marginalized and unloved, how you can live confidently knowing that you're God's adopted child? In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from Ephesians to help you move from feelings of low self-worth and low self-esteem to feeling chosen, pursued, and loved.
Is there sin in your past, or sin you're struggling with right now, that's keeping you from believing and experiencing Jesus' love for you? His love isn't predicated on your performance, good or bad. His love is predicated on His character, which never changes. He can't help but love you! In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from Hebrews 5:10 to help you break free from the sin, shame, and guilt that might be preventing you from fully resting in and experiencing His love and grace.
The world is full of distractions that will take us places we never intended to go, and Satan is lurking around the corner trying to deceive us with false beliefs. One of those beliefs has been the concept that Jesus, in addition to religious philosophy, traditions, and principles, is what grants us salvation. Pete Briscoe uses Colossians 2 to shine some light on the truth that Christ alone has made it possible for us to be cleansed and seen blameless in God's sight.
Do you want deep, authentic relationships with people? If you do, perhaps a paradigm shift needs to happen in your thinking. The world tells us to make a name for ourselves and to do it at whatever the cost. The problem is along the way we step on others and damage relationships. In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from Philippians 2 where the apostle Paul shows us how to think counter-culturally so that we can experience deep and meaningful relationships with others.
Is there someone in your life who has deeply hurt you? We can come up with a list of excuses as to why we cannot or will not forgive that person, but the reality is that unforgiveness in our hearts is only hurting us. That pain will leak into other areas of our lives, and we will end up hurting loved ones in the process. Pete Briscoe teaches in the book of Philemon on why we should reconcile with each other and how we can go about doing it so that we have a better understanding of everything good we have in Christ, which leads to a fuller experience.
Why does Jesus allow persecution to happen when he has the authority to stop it? At the time the book of Hebrews was written, new believers were under pressure, some were persecuted for their newfound faith. In this message, Pete Briscoe walks us through Scripture to find answers to this timeless question.
There are many caricatures of Jesus—some see Him simply as an effective teacher, compassionate advocate, or revolutionary leader. However, He is more than all of these things, and if we fail to recognize His full identity, our faith is incomplete. Do you have a complete understanding of Jesus? In this message, Pete Briscoe reviews the full and resplendent descriptions of Jesus to help us achieve a complete understanding of who He is.
Are you unmovable in your faith? You can be when you know truth. And that's what we have in Jesus. A dazzling truth that He is better than living by law, works, service, and good deeds. A truth that has the ability to transform us from the inside out and of which nothing else compares. Do you know Jesus this way? In this message, Pete Briscoe encourages you to keep your eyes squarely on Jesus.

Here's a true statement: None of us are so enthralling that we can keep our spouses enchanted for multiple decades! We just can't do it. So if you're feeling a bit bored in your marriage, you might be wondering if there's even a way to make it fresh and exciting again. In this message, Pete Briscoe answers that question with a definite Yes! He shows you how to achieve a vibrant marriage by exploring four ideas from Genesis.
God is desperately concerned with how His children are treated. He's concerned as our heavenly Father—and as our heavenly Father-in-law! Because our spouses are God's sons and daughters, when we marry, He also becomes our heavenly father-in-law! And He has a whole list in Colossians about how He expects His in-laws to treat His sons and daughters. In this message, Pete Briscoe explores how God views our marriages and how the way we treat our spouses impacts our relationship with Him.

Does your spouse know the true you? We all have a fake persona that we present to the world—and often to our spouse—in order to hide our shame, past hurts, and failures. It's difficult to become vulnerable, but the more we hide the harder it is to be known - and being known is where true intimacy lies. In this message, Pete Briscoe encourages you to introduce the “true you” to your spouse—the honest and vulnerable you that is truly worth knowing—and see how your relationship blossoms into a deeply meaningful marriage.

If you look behind the conflicts, arguments, and unresolved disputes in your marriage you'll likely find the root problem is that you and your spouse are fighting for control. The human quest for control is nothing new—it's been plaguing relationships since the beginning of time. And the tension that results from guarding your turf prevents your marriage from flourishing. In this message, Pete Briscoe talks about how our need for control is really just a symptom of something deeper. He discusses what it takes to erase the boundaries of our individual kingdoms in order to enjoy the oneness that God intended for our marriages.

Dependent isn't an adjective most people would want to use to describe themselves. Rather, we would like to be independent, in control. Paul writes about being dependent on Christ as a wonderful and necessary thing for Christian living. It is a privilege! In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches us how dependence on God is a beautiful part of the dance, as we let the Spirit guide us through daily living.
When you think of Jesus' disciples, what do you picture? Do you picture superheroes or great, powerful men? The truth is that the disciples were just ordinary, everyday men! This group, hand-picked by Jesus, included no scholars, religious leaders, or especially talented men. We have examples of when they lacked faith, humility, spiritual understanding, and power. Yet despite their ordinariness, these men became testimonies of God's glory when He worked in and through them. In this message, Pete Briscoe introduces us to this ragtag group of men and shows us how God's power changed them from ordinary to extraordinary.
How you feel about Jesus' return probably has a lot to do with your understanding of the Bible. There certainly will be a lot of action that day—the dead in Christ rising, non-believers swept away, believers lifted up to meet Jesus in the clouds. It will be an amazing day! But if you're not sure about how Jesus will react to you, you might be living in fear of His return. Maybe that fear stems from a struggle with sin, or you're afraid you'll be sinning at that exact moment He returns. In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from 1 John 2 & 3 to help release you from your fear and anxiety. You'll learn why and how you can live confidently today while you wait for Jesus' imminent return.

Have you ever heard biblical teaching that sounded a bit off? Sometimes it's glaringly obvious, but other times, you might not even be aware that you're being deceived. False teaching can be extremely dangerous. It can lead you into temptation and outside of the Life Jesus came to give. So, how can you discern false teaching and avoid anything beyond the realm of God's Truth? Pete Briscoe takes you to the answer found in 1 John and shares how to recognize the telltale sign of false teaching and avoid its danger and deceit.
Why is the world such a dangerous place for Christians? Because worldly pleasures are developed by the evil one for the purpose of drawing you away from Jesus. Just like a true friend would warn you of impending danger, John cautions us in 1 John about the danger of being seduced by worldly things that are not from God but are from Satan—things that pull us away from Jesus and into harmful circumstances. In this message, Pete Briscoe shows us what's at stake when we maintain a flirtatious relationship with worldly things.
Is there ever a check in your spirit about whether you're really a Christian? Studied out of context, 1 John 2:3, which mentions obeying commands, can read more like a warning to believers and cause us to doubt if we're really children of God. But in reality, John brings to light in his letter the most beautiful and magnificent truth about the new command that Jesus wants us to focus on. In this message, Pete Briscoe uses John's letter to lift the burden of doubt we might carry about our salvation. And at the same time, teaches us about Jesus' design for love that is counterintuitive to how we love on our own.
Jesus left simple and clear instructions for all believers who have received the Holy Spirit. Be a witness—tell people about Me, tell them about the cross, tell them how I've transformed your life. That's the passionate witnessing we see the disciples doing in Acts after they received the Holy Spirit. Do you see this in your life—in your church? In this message Pete Briscoe reminds us where our priorities lie as the church of Christ and challenges each of us to make a difference in our homes, at work, in our communities and in our relationships by living out what Jesus asks of us: to be My witnesses.

Do you ever hear people say, “God told me to do that,” and think, did He really “tell” you? You hear others claim they know God's will for their life, but how do you really know what God wants? We can look in Scripture and see, generally, what God wants for His followers, but what does He want for each of us individually? Maybe there's a decision you're grappling with now—who to marry, which college to attend, or a major career or lifestyle choice. In this message, Pete Briscoe gives clear guidance on how to hear the Holy Spirit and discover God's best life for you.

If you have friends who are not believers, they may ask how you know the Gospel is true. Paul was asked, too. Could he have misunderstood what others told him? Did he have some details wrong? No! Paul received the truth of the Gospel straight from Jesus—not from men! In this message from Pete Briscoe's series, Dance Lessons, he uses Paul's letter to the Galatians to teach how the Christian life starts, how we are to live it, and what living in the spirit looks like. It's not a set of rules, but a wide open door to follow Jesus!
Galatians is different than other letters written by Paul. In every other epistle, he finds something for which to praise the young churches before giving them advice. However, he's so angry with the Galatians that he skips that section all together. Why? In a single word—legalism. It had infected their churches, and even today, it minimizes what Jesus did on the cross and tells us we have to do something, too, to earn salvation. Listen as Pete Briscoe teaches us how to avoid the lie of legalism and trust in Christ alone.
Is Jesus your drill sergeant or your dance instructor? Are you marching along, trying to be good enough, trying to keep in step with everyone else? Jesus is calling you out of the march and into a dance with Him—sometimes messy, sometimes uncoordinated, but always focused on Christ, moved by Life with Him. In this message, Pete Briscoe invites us to stop marching, stop watching the dance from the sidelines, and start dancing with life and joy!

What do sinners do? They sin. Sinning comes naturally and is to be expected from people who don't know Jesus. The battle against sin truly begins after you accept Jesus into your life. It's at that point where you begin to feel the pull toward sinning – yet also feel a counter-pull that makes it difficult to sin. Why? Because you're now a saint, and sinning is no longer a natural behavior for you. Instead of being a sinner saved by grace, you're a saint who sometimes sins! How does this sin battle play out in the life of a believer? That's what Pete Briscoe teaches in this message from 1 John 3:4-10 where you'll find hope for victory in your battle against sin.

Do you believe that Jesus can do miracles in your life? Jesus' disciple Philip was an analytical, practical kind of guy, the one who would handle the details of the disciples' travel arrangements. This responsible, systematic personality, however, led him to have a hard time believing in the supernatural power of Jesus. Yet Jesus took the opportunity to give Philip, and us, glimpses of how powerful Jesus really is! In this message, Pete Briscoe introduces us to Philip and encourages us to avoid Philip's mistakes and fully embrace Jesus' supernatural power.
The disciple John was a man surrounded by death. As the last of Jesus' 12 disciples left alive, he had to face the death of all his friends in some horrible ways. Yet he was a man who truly knew what Life was! Through his writings, we see that John had a firm grasp on what true Life really is and where it is found—in Christ alone. In this message, Pete Briscoe walks us through some of John's writings and points us to where eternal, satisfying, intimate, true Life is found.

We all have things we're passionate about. While we'd like to say that our passions are for noble and selfless things, like helping the poor or feeding the hungry, most likely our passions take shape while we're stuck sitting in traffic or watching a bad call from the ref in a sporting event or feeling personally affronted by what someone says. Jesus' disciple James was no exception. He was a man full of misplaced, dangerous passion. But allowing his passion to be led by the Holy Spirit changed James into a man whose passion was dangerous—in a good way! In this message, Pete Briscoe shares with us some stories from James' life and guides us in dealing with our passion and the passionate people around us.

Pastor Mike discusses the Christmas season with a look towards Mary as a model for Hope. In addition, a video message from Pete Briscoe, Senior Pastor from Bent Tree Church in Dallas, Tx brings encouragement and challenge for us. Pastor Pete describes how Mary's life of accepting the call to bear the "Son of God" is a good model for us on how we accept the various calls from God in our lives today. Even in the midst of "doing" the will of God, life can be hard and we can be challenged with a lack of significance and purpose. But God has a higher plan for your life. Will you accept it and thus have His Hope in the midst of it all?
