On this episode of the Hayek Program Podcast, Kwame Anthony Appiah delivers a keynote lecture at the 2023 Markets & Society conference, exploring the historical and philosophical complexities of cultural property. Using examples from classical literature, African history, and global museum debates, he critiques modern repatriation efforts for oversimplifying ownership claims. Appiah argues that the ownership and heritage of cultural artifacts are historically complex, traceable through ancestry, territory, and identity. This complexity often creates contradictions in restitution debates. Instead of a narrow focus on repatriation, Appiah advocates for a more nuanced, cosmopolitan approach to heritage and museum collections.Kwame Anthony Appiah is a Professor of Philosophy and Law at New York University, the Laurance S. Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy, and the University Center for Human Values Emeritus at Princeton University. He earned his BA and PhD from the University of Cambridge and has since taught at numerous renowned universities, including Yale, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, Princeton, and NYU.Appiah has published widely on literary and cultural studies with a focus on African and African American culture, ethics, and identity, including his most recent book, The Lies That Bind: Rethinking Identity (Liveright Publishing 2018). For his work, he has also received many awards, including the National Humanities Medal. His work on cosmopolitanism, identity, and heritage takes a nuanced and practical approach, embracing the particularities and challenges of living within a complicated social context. He also helps others understand and tackle everyday challenges through his advice column, The Ethicist at New York Times. This lecture has been published in the Markets & Society Journal, Volume 1 Issue 1, as "Whose Heritage? Beside his academic work, Matthew is on the board of directors for The Better Food Foundation and Creature Kind, and he's the author of Hungry Beautiful Animals: The Joyful Case for Going Vegan.Matt urges us to stop looking for moral perfectionism and accept mistakes and dead ends are part of being human. He encourages listeners to look for light coming through the cracks, and he advocates shifting from scarcity mode to an abundance mindset to stay positive. His career and veganism comes from finding his way, rather than a particular plan, shaped by being an anxious young person at a time when there was less support and understanding. He thought he'd train for a career in law but instead turned to philosophy, which opened his mind and made better sense of the world. The story of Matt's first meeting with his then-girlfriend's scary father, a successful businessman, is poignant and personal. To Matthew's surprise and relief, his now father-in-law was a strong advocate of philosophy studies among young executives.A bulldog called Gus, and friend and fellow philosopher Nathan Nobis, of Morehouse College, Atlanta, and Matt's wife Susan, helped him change his omnivorous eating habits. And while veganism is his own ethical and philosophical choice, it's not something Matt would insist his children followed throughout adulthood (though he'd be pleased if they did). Finally, and curiously, Matthew is an avid follower of Arsenal Football Club – the English Premiership (soccer) team also known as The Gunners. His work centres around the question: how might we best design trustworthy organisations, technologies, and systems that support a healthy and dignified life for all, within planetary boundaries? To do this, he draws on many branches of philosophy, systems science, cognitive sciences, and related disciplines. He is a Fellow of The Royal Society of the Arts, co-lead of the Responsible AI Network (RAIN), and Lead of Ethics in Action. He is also the Ethicist in Residence at CoLabs and guest lectures at several universities. Previously, Nate was an angel and impact investor and the founding CEO of a venture capital-backed startup. In everyday life, he's an urban rewilder, community convener, and ‘inner developer,' bringing regenerative thinking, practice, and culture to his corner of Melbourne. In this wonderful conversation, Nathan shares his exploration of expressing and feeling into the whole of himself. We discuss realisations he made through his psycho-physical inquiries, from suppressing emotions to crumbling worldviews, to the relief and healing of crying, and expressing and experiencing more joy and gratitude in life. For anyone on their own path of self-inquiry, this conversation contains many universal themes that I sense we all experience, which may make you feel more at home on your own path. Driven by a profound commitment to helping the world HEAL, Dr. Randall's groundbreaking work is redefining the way we perceive healing, particularly in the context of trauma, personal growth, and the intentional use of psychedelic substances and plant medicines. At the heart of his mission lies the ancient yet profoundly relevant concept of “healing” – derived from the Old English “hælan,” meaning “to make whole.” Dr. Randall's work challenges us to reflect deeply on what it truly means to be whole, to mend not only our physical wounds but also the emotional and spiritual scars that shape our lives. He knows firsthand the struggle of living dual lives: one dominated by trauma-fueled fears, and the other filled with the love, hope, kindness, and peace we all yearn for.Through his transformative books, Triumph Over Trauma and his latest release, The Healing Revolution Diet, Dr. Randall Hansen guides us on a journey toward complete healing. While Triumph Over Trauma explores holistic and integrative approaches to overcoming the burdens of past pain, The Healing Revolution Diet introduces a revolutionary framework for healing through food, nutrition, and conscious choices. Together, these works empower us to rediscover our true, authentic selves—the individuals we were destined to be before trauma disrupted our lives. His message is crystal clear: it's time to stop wasting time, money, and energy on incomplete and inaccurate methods. It's time to break free from the confines of conventional healing, which often leaves us with nothing more than a diagnosis and a prescription.Dr. Randall's work introduces us to the Healing Wheel, a holistic framework designed to address the multifaceted nature of healing. He delves into the six major modalities of holistic healing, bridging the gap between trauma and true recovery. He also provides invaluable insights into how to find genuine healers, shares inspiring stories of healing journeys, and equips us with practical tools and techniques for our own transformation. This interview promises to be a transformative exploration of Dr. Randall's profound insights and empowering philosophy. We are honored to have him with us today—a beacon of hope in a world yearning for healing, self-discovery, and the embrace of our authentic selves. Born in England and raised in Ghana, Appiah is half English and half African. And perhaps because of this, he's fascinated with the concept of identity, and the power it wields over people. But rather than wage identity politics, Appiah encourages us instead to be good global citizens, interested in and accepting of each other. In short, cosmopolitan. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Peter Singer AMA (July 30th), published by Toby Tremlett on July 22, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. On July 30th, Peter Singer will be answering your questions in a Forum AMA. He has agreed to answer questions for an hour in the evening (Melbourne time), so if your question hasn't been answered by the 31st, it likely won't be. Singer needs little introduction for many people in the Forum. In fact, it is fairly likely that his work was the reason we first heard about effective altruism. However, I've included some information here to orient your questions, if you'd benefit from it. What Singer has been up to recently Singer retired from his Princeton professorship recently, ending with a conference celebrating his work (written about my Richard Chappell here - I also recommend this post as a place to start looking for questions to ask Singer). Since, then, he has: Started a podcast, L ives Well Lived, along with his frequent collaborator Kasia de Lazari-Radek, available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. They've released episodes with Jane Goodall, Yuval Harari, Ingrid Newkirk, Daniel Kahneman, Kate Grant, and more. Published a dialogue with the female Buddhist monastic and ethicist Shih Chao-Hwei, called The Buddhist and the Ethicist. Continued his work on the Journal of Controversial Ideas. Started a substack, and written on various topics for Project Syndicate. EA-relevant moments in Singer's career For those who don't know, here are some top EA-relevant moments in Singer's career, which you might want to ask about: 1971- Singer wrote Famine, Affluence and Morality in response to the starving of Bangladesh Liberation War refugees, a moral philosophy paper which argued that we all have an obligation to help the people we can, whether they live near us, or far away. This paper is the origin of the drowning child argument. 1975- Singer published Animal Liberation, the book which arguably started the modern animal rights movement. Singer published a substantially updated version, Animal Liberation Now, in 2023. Singer has been an engaged supporter and critic of Effective Altruism since its inception, notably delivering a very popular TED talk about EA in 2013. NB: I'm adding Peter Singer as a co-author for this post, but it was written by me, Toby. Errors are my own. Thanks for listening. Welcome to another thought-provoking episode of Brave New Us, where we delve into the complex world of fertility treatments through the lens of Catholic bioethics. In this episode, we're joined by John DiCamillo, Ethicist and Personal Consultations Director at the National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC). With the moral landscape of fertility interventions becoming increasingly intricate, many Catholics find themselves navigating a maze of questions. IVF is widely acknowledged as problematic, but what about other interventions like gamete intrafallopian transfer or intrauterine insemination? Especially when these methods involve the couple's own gametes, the ethical considerations can be daunting. John brings 12 years of expertise as a full-time ethicist to the table, offering insights into how the NCBC provides guidance on these very issues. Through research, writing, publications, and education, the NCBC stands as a beacon for those seeking clarity in the area of Catholic bioethics. Tune in as Samantha and John discuss the dilemmas faced by couples exploring fertility treatments, the principles that can help discern the morality of different methods, and the invaluable role of personal consultations in addressing these sensitive topics. Canada's system of MAID (Medical assistance in dying) is under increased international and national scrutiny and criticism. In 2021, more than 10,000 people chose to die with physician administered drugs. The question of whether mental illness is a sole qualifier for MAID was addressed in parliament, reminding that in 2015 the Supreme Court ruled adults with "a grievous and irremedial medical condition" were eligible for assisted death. Now there is growing fear people under economic strain are accessing MAID.  In 2021, more than 10,000 people accessed MAID in Canada, while at the same time the numbers of doctors engaging in providing medical assistance in dying is dropping. Meanwhile a leading United States medical ethicist is calling for MAID to immediately be adopted in the State of New York.  Guest: Dr. Arthur Caplan. Mitty Professor of Bioethics. In this week's conversation, Yascha Mounk and Kwame Anthony Appiah discuss why universities discarded an ethic of common humanity for a new form of identitarianism; how we can recognize and respect individual and cultural diversity without making it the main factor in our interactions; and why faculty must be agents for the change they wish to see in universities. On this episode of The Open Door (April 17th), panelists Jim Hanink, Mario Ramos-Reyes, and Valerie Niemeyer discuss medical ethics. Our focus will be the debate about the criteria for brain death. Our special guest is John A. Di Camillo, PhD, BeL. He is an Ethicist and the Personal Consultations Director at The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC). He manages its 24/7 free ethics consultation service as well as the Personal Consultations Fellows and Interns Program. He applies Catholic moral theology to science and medicine through research, writing, speaking, mentoring, and fielding hundreds of ethics questions every year. His areas of focus include cooperation with evil, sexual orientation and gender identity, reproductive technologies, and pregnancy complications. Among the questions we'll ask are the following. Please feel free to suggest your own. What is Catholics United on Brain Death and Organ Donation about? What were the goals of writing it and seeking endorsements for it?Why is there no moral certainty of death when following the American Academy of Neurology guidelines for a determination of brain death? What is ongoing hypothalamic function? Is it compatible with brain death? What would be the effect of improved clinical guidelines that require cessation of hypothalamic function?Should patients expect that the existing American Academy of Neurology guidelines—or something even less rigorous—will be applied in practice? Is there a reasonable expectation that the existing guidelines will be improved in the near future?Does a person considering organ donation have good reason to expect that he or she will be truly dead at the time of vital organ procurement?Given that we must presume life until death is certain, and given the lack of moral certainty of death whenever the current brain death criteria are used, can we still assume that a majority of vital organ donors are deceased at the time of organ harvesting? Is it wise, at this time, to decline organ donor status at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) upon first receiving a driver's license? To revoke organ donor status through the appropriate channel in one's state?Should we advocate for the right of patients and health care professionals to conscientiously object to the use of the current brain death criteria for a determination of death? How can we best highlight the Church's teaching on the need for moral certainty of death as a condition for vital organ procurement? What do you hope will happen next, now that Catholics United has been published?

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Confessions of a Cheeseburger Ethicist, published by Richard Y Chappell on November 18, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Eric Schwitzgebel invokes the "cheeseburger ethicist" - a moral philosopher who agrees that eating meat is wrong, but eats meat anyway - as the paradigm of failing to walk the walk of one's moral philosophy. The example resonates with me, since people often assume that as a utilitarian I must also be vegan. It can be a little embarrassing to have to correct them. I agree that I should be a vegan, in the sense that there's no adequate justification for most purchases of animal products. I certainly think highly of vegans. And yet… I'm not one. (Sorry!) So I am a "cheeseburger ethicist". And yet… I'm not unmoved by the practical implications of my moral theorizing. I'm actually quite committed to putting my ethics into practice, in a number of respects (e.g. donating a substantial portion of my income, pursuing intellectually honest inquiry into important questions, and maintaining a generally forthright and co-operative disposition towards others). I'm just not especially committed to avoiding moral mistakes, or acting justifiably in each instance. If I'm right about this, then even a "cheeseburger ethicist" may still be "walking the walk", so long as their practical priorities correspond (sufficiently closely) to those prescribed by their moral theory. But while disagreeing with Schwitzgebel about the significance of self-ascribed error, I take myself to be further confirming his subsequent claim that "walking the walk" helps to flesh out the substantive content of a moral view. After all, it's precisely by reflecting on how I take myself to be living a broadly consequentialist-approved life that we can see that avoiding moral mistakes per se isn't a high priority (for consequentialists of my stripe). It really matters how much good it would do to remedy the mistake, and whether your efforts could be better spent elsewhere. Don't sweat the small stuff As I wrote in response to Caplan's conscience objection: [W]e aren't all-things-considered perfect. It's really tempting to make selfish [or short-sighted] decisions that are less than perfectly justified, and in fact we all do this all the time. Humans are inveterate rationalizers, and many seem to find it irresistible to contort their normative theories until they get the result that "actually we've most reason to do everything we actually do." But when stated explicitly like this, we can all agree that this is pure nonsense, right? We should just be honest about the fact that our choices aren't always perfectly justified. That's not ideal, but nor is it the end of the world. Of course, some mistakes are more egregious than others. Perhaps many reserve the term 'wrong' for those moral mistakes that are so bad that you ought to feel significant guilt over them. I don't think eating meat is wrong in that sense. It's not like torturing puppies (just as failing to donate enough to charity isn't like watching a child drown in this respect). Rather, it might require non-trivial effort for a generally decent person to pursue, and those efforts might be better spent elsewhere. That doesn't mean that eating meat is actually justified. Rather, the suggestion is that some genuinely unjustified actions aren't worth stressing over. On my view, we should prioritize our moral efforts, and put more effort into making changes that have greater moral payoffs. For most people, their top moral priority should probably just be to donate more to effective charities.[2] Some may be in a position where they can do even more good via high-impact work. Personal consumption decisions have got to be way down the list of priorities, by contrast. And even within that sphere, we can subdivide it into the "low hanging fruit" ...

Ethicist, author and professor, Dr. David Gushee returns to the podcast to talk about his new book: Defending Democracy from its Christian Enemies.  They begin talking about what many have called "the Nones," but Gushee calls Conscientious Objectors like Tim Whitaker and Pete Briscoe. (Ken includes himself.) Many of those "Nones" - those who claim to have no religious affiliation - actually find themselves in moral conflict with a religion that has violated its own moral standards. For Gushee (who is a committed Christian) democracy must be defended. Too many Christians are actively and aggressively attacking our democratic institutions all in the name of their God and their Bible. This is not new, and not limited to the United States. Dr. Gushee traces the challenges to democracy in France, Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary and Brazil. He recognizes Christian Nationalism as a threat but prefers his own label: Authoritarian Reactionary Christianity. Adolph Hitler, Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orbán, and Jair Bolsonaro all invite comparisons to Trumpism in the United States. Ken and David talk about characters and players like Pastor Greg Locke, firebrand Tucker Carlson, theologian James Cone and Gushee's mentor, Dr. Glen Stassen. The good professor draws from Baptist history, the Black Church and the biblical teaching around Covenant to invite us all to defend the democracy that guarantees our freedom to exercise our conscience in practicing the religion (or non-religion) of our choice. He attended Bryanston School and later Clare College, Cambridge, where he earned a Ph.D. in philosophy in 1982. Through rigorous historical and ethical analysis, Nigel Biggar presents a strong case for why the ubiquitous anti-colonial narrative has little grounding in historical fact. Rather, Biggar argues, a survey of the actions of the British Empire in particular reveals it to be a strong force against slavery, racism, and the long list of other sins that are often attributed to it.

Ethicist, David Gushee, says we are seeing the emergence of a new kind of loveless Christianity. But those who practice it say their anger, culture warring, and pursuit of power are actually how they're loving their neighbors. Then, Skye talks to actor Rainn Wilson, best known as Dwight Schrute from “The Office,” about religious pluralism, spiritual narcissism, why Hollywood misrepresents Christians, and how he became a follower of the Baha'i faith. Wilson's new book is “Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution.” Also this week—A.I. has rewritten Genesis to be vegan-friendly, and does God really hate yoga pants?   Patreon Bonus:  Our full discussion on yoga pants https://www.patreon.com/posts/83104170   0.00 - Intro   2:33 - Theme Song   2:55 - Sponsor: Faithful Counseling Get 10% off your first month at Faithful Counseling.com/HOLYPOST   4:03 - A Vegan Bible   15:23 - Yoga Pants & Christian Modesty   25:37 - Christianity without Love Sponsors   40:55 - Sponsor Miracle Made Go to TryMiracle.com/ HOLYPOST and use the code HOLYPOST to claim your free 3 piece towel set and save over 40% off   42:00 - Sponsor Sundays Dog Food Get 35% off your first order of Sundays.
