When the Prime Minister is doing all the shake and howdy at the investment summit in Auckland, I bet he'll be feeling like a harassed parent who —despite all the chaos behind the scenes— somehow manages to arrive at a family wedding with the kids in tow looking cool, calm and very happy to be there. Even though one of the kids had been refusing to leave the house and you all had a big bust-up in the car on the way to the church. “But we're here now guys - smile everyone”. I bet you that's how Christopher Luxon is feeling. And what will be making it worse is the fresh criticism coming from Briscoes Group managing director Rod Duke who's telling Luxon and his government to “get their A into gear” and “actually do something” to help the economy. And I agree with him. Because are you really doing any better than you were a year or 18 months ago? This isn't the first time Rod Duke has made these kinds of comments. I remember him saying a while back that he was prepared to give the Government until this month to deliver some results and, if he didn't see results, he'd be putting a rocket under them. And that's what he's doing now. He's obviously had a gutsful of the Government blaming everything on the last government and he wants more action. He says: “I think they're of the view that up until now they've been able to blame the prior government, which is typical of a lot of governments I guess. But you know, the time has just about come where you're going to have to make your own mark. “You've had enough time to study, to tighten, to understand what the books look like, and now you've got to put some policies into place.” He says everyone's aware of the situation Luxon and Co. inherited from the previous government, but they've had enough time and should be able to show more for their efforts of the past 15 or so months. Duke doesn't seem to be doing what Luxon would probably ask him to do. You know, the line CEOs like to use about not going to them with problems but going to them with solutions. But I think Rod Duke is right. The Government hasn't delivered when it comes to the economy and it does need to get its “A into G”. The problem is though, the Government has fallen into the trap that pretty much every government falls into – especially first-term governments. The trap of trying to do too much. When you're in opposition, it's very easy to sit there and have all these big ideas. Because when you're in opposition, that's all you have to do. Different story when you get into government, though. For starters, you realise that the things you promised to do aren't quite so easy to do in reality. So it takes way longer to achieve something. And when you get into government, you have to deal with all the stuff that blows up in your face on a daily basis. You can lurch from one crisis to another and see your quarterly plan targets disappearing in front of your eyes. So if Christopher Luxon said to me: “Don't come to me with problems, come to me with solutions” - here's what I'd tell him. I'd tell him to decide what his government is actually going to focus on and to stick with it. If it's the economy, then make that your priority between now and the election. And be honest about it, this laser-like focus that the Prime Minister talks about can't go in all directions. I'd tell the PM to be upfront with us and say that if we want better health services and better education facilities and everything else that governments get lost in —as this government has— I'd tell the PM to be courageous and tell us that we're going to have to wait for all those other things. Because for now, it's the economy and only the economy we're going to worry about. That might sound simplistic, but unless the Government ditches this idea that it's going to fix everything ASAP, then it's going to fail in all of them. And people like Rod Duke won't just be telling the Government to get its A into gear, he'll be telling it to get its A out of here. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I am very particular. I'm a big believer that a Tidy House makes for a Tidy Mind. I like things to have their place. I like routine and I hate clutter. Both of my televisions are mounted on the walls with their cables hidden away. I use organisers to secret my stereo cords, and a cluttered benchtop makes me feel so unsettled that I insist on having nothing on it. Nothing. Our microwave is hidden away in a cupboard. Our toaster is hidden in a drawer. And when it comes to electric gadgets, that's as far as I'm prepared to go. An air fryer? You've gotta be kidding me. Despite my wife's protestations, I still refuse to buy an electric kettle. Therefore, for most all of adult life I've made coffee the same way. An Italian stovetop, a little Bialetti number. You put the water in the bottom, coffee in the funnel, put it on the element and wait for the espresso to brew. It spits out the top of the shaft after about 5 minutes and 12 seconds of steady heat. It makes you wait, just a little. But it's worth it: a rich, black espresso, creme on the top. I love the smell, I love the taste, and I love the ritual. I figure my Bialetti brew lands in that perfect middle-ground between freeze-dried instant coffee and the in-home espresso makers which have steadily become ubiquitous in our kitchens. It's coffee for someone who cares about coffee, but doesn't require a gleaming chrome spaceship taking up 4sq metres on the kitchen bench. But am I missing out? Truthfully, I'm starting to second guess myself. Last year, a family member very generously offered to shout us a fancy espresso maker as a wedding gift. I gently demurred at the time. It's not that I think they're totally gimmicky. They're not popcorn-makers or at-home candyfloss machines. But it's funny, my parents got a machine a couple of years ago with a grinder and steamer and pitcher for the milk and Dad thrashes it every morning. My sister has an even fancier new number and brews velvety rich flat whites in those fancy see-through mugs. She says she hasn't bought a coffee since. And I can see how the economics add up. If you replace two cafe-bought coffees a week with a $500 dollar machine, add in the milk and coffee costs, you'd have paid it off by the next Rugby World Cup. To the best of my knowledge, only one other person in my life has consistently made coffee the same way as me. But as my brother sheepishly admitted to me last night, he's just ditched his Italian stovetop for a big, fancy espresso maker he bought in a Briscoes sale. “It's great bro!” he said. “You just push a button.” You just push a button. You see, I think that's it. Sure, maybe it's the cables on the benchtop that puts me off. The sound. The cost of a big fancy coffee machine. Or maybe in a world that's always changing and where nothing is guaranteed, starting every day in exactly the same way with exactly the same ritual and exactly the same brew... maybe starting the day by waiting on a simple process and a humble pot... maybe that's what makes the coffee taste so damn good. Briscoes Group says despite a difficult retail environment, it's had positive sales results. The owner of the Briscoe Homeware and Rebel Sport brands says sales reached $245.3 million in the three months to January – up 0.96% annually. Homeware sales went up 1.27%, and sporting goods rose 0.44%. Managing Director Rod Duke believes tough trading conditions will continue and be especially challenging in the first six months of this year. Duke told Mike Hosking he believes the second half will be better, hopefully driven by initiatives from the government. He says it will be marked seriously if nothing is seen by the end of March. Briscoes' endless sales are continuing to pay off. The group, which also includes Rebel Sport, made a net profit of $33 million in the half year to July. Briscoe Group Limited has posted a near record net profit after tax of $84.2 million for the year ending January 28, 2024. The group, which runs both Briscoes and Rebel Sport, says profits have nearly reached the $88.4 million record set last year - despite a tough economic climate impacting the retail sector. Briscoe Group Managing Director Rod Duke says more customers have gravitated to the group's output in recent months. "The strategy's unchanged - and when we do that, we tell a lot of people that we're going to do it." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's a sad, old business when part of your market update is the cost of the violent crime you are having to deal with. Michael Hill this week talked of the sort of things businesses talk of; the downturn, the mood, the spend and the consumer. All of it's bad right now for obvious reasons. What is interesting is they said of the various countries they operate in that New Zealand is the worst in terms of sentiment. I wonder why. But they talked too of the cost of security and the cost of crime, the cost of closing one of their shops because of crime. They are not the first of course. We have previously heard from Briscoes and the millions they have to put aside each year to offset the carnage that takes place at their outlets. Last week One NZ closed one of their shops because of damage and crime. They told the stories of the fear of staff, all the security issues and training required and the manager who was held by the scruff of the neck for ten minutes over a returned product. Who needs it? That's before you get to the astonishing footage of the petrol station attendant, who got the life beaten out of him by some thug who literally laid into him and wouldn't stop. He now awaits surgery on an eye, among other injuries. So, the question is - when does it stop? When do things change? How many videos do we need to watch before the much hyped and promised crackdown happens? The 18-year-old from the petrol station has been arrested and charged. How many years does he go to prison for? Does he go to prison? Does he have a sob story? When do major New Zealand retailers stop having to regale the sharemarket with their profit-sapping stories of jungle behaviour and frightened staff? No Government can solve this sort of malaise instantly, or overnight, or perhaps even quickly. But my word, the pressure is on. When you watch that petrol station video, and we all should, we look third world, and we look lawless. Dave Meltzer returns to talk about the legacy and career of the late, Ole Anderson, who passed away at home last week at the age of 81. Dave and Chris talk about how Ole became an “Anderson,” and started teaming with Gene Anderson as “The Minnesota Wrecking Crew” in 1968. They talk about Ole's legendary feud with the great Dusty Rhodes, and how he later ended up in the Four Horsemen with Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard and Ric Flair. They also discuss his career as booker and eventual owner of Georgia Championship Wrestling, including the debacle of the Black Scorpion & Sting angle, the secret (and hostile) takeover and purchase of the promotion by Vince McMahon and The Briscoes, and how Ole didn't see the talent in Ricky Steamboat, Randy Savage or Hulk Hogan! They cover his time in WCW, and his difficult relationships with Eric Bischoff, Jim Barnett, Bobby Heenan, and Vince McMahon. This week in the Combat Zone, the Comics discuss the War at Station 44, a pretty wild show that took place in a fire hall! From the worst first hour of wrestling we may have ever seen that turned around into one of the best hours CZW has produced, this was a show full of lows and highs. Acts like the Briscoes, Trent Acid, and Justice Pain continue to impress where Rockin Rebel, Jon Dahmer and Pastor Jim continue to depress. On top of that a true ECW legend makes a surprise appearance, and we get a truly insane main event that could have gone terribly wrong. Listen in! you can follow CZW from the very beginning on episode 1 in the Wrestling Brain archive.

Thieves have cleaned out a small Canterbury church taking its brass altar pieces and other precious religious items that are likely to be melted down. And its the second time St Marks in the Christchurch suburb of Marshland has been hit. People are being asked to contact police if they see any of items for sale. There are a few awesome matches on this show, but man...it was a bit of a rough watch getting there. On this show, Nigel McGuinness takes on the dominant Takeshi Morishima for the ROH Title and begins his memorable, amazing reign as champion. The Briscoes and No Remorse Corps beat the hell out of each other. Roderick Strong and Austin Aries put on a clinic. The NWA gets showcased. On top of that, Sweet and Sour Inc. and Age of the Fall are all over this one. There are quite a few indy-riffic matches to start this show, but I swear, if you hang in there...it gets better! In the news, Kurt Angle gets a DUI, TNA's home channel goes High Def, John Cena may miss WrestleMania, Chris Jericho is rumored to be leaving WWE forever, the Hulkster has a new gig, Scott Hall is crossing the border, and much more! In the last pre-election pod, Annabelle Lee-Mather, Ben Thomas and Toby Manhire comb through the final polls and take stock after a hectic final few days in which panicked-looking National has gone really negative - on a government led by them. Meanwhile, Labour might have inched back up, but is it enough to give them even a distant hope? It's the bonus show from 5 years ago, and it was a halfway decent Ring of Honor show. Very few things fell flat from this show in Nevada as Jay Lethal defends the World Title against Will Ospreay match, Jushin Liger takes on Kenny King, The Briscoes defend the Tag Titles against The Addiction, Sumie Sakai puts the Women of Honor Title on the line against Tenille Dashwood, and much more! In the news, we talk about Brie Bella kicking Liv Morgan in the face and possibly concussing her, Mia Yim signing with WWE, Hulk Hogan "coming back" to WWE for Crown Jewel, Neville's next career move up in the air, Joey Janela completely destroying his knee, and much more! Tragedy struck this week when Jay Briscoe, one half of the Ring of Honor tag team champions, was killed in an auto accident just shy of his 39th birthday. Today, I speak candidly on Jamin Pugh, the man, and Jay Briscoe, the wrestler... the circumstances of the accident, a medical update on his two daughters who suffered terrible injuries in the wreck, why The Briscoes will go down as one of the all-time great tag teams, personal memories of some key moments in his career including his time in House of Glory, the controversial tweets that followed him around for his career, why The Briscoes never landed in WWE (and it has nothing to do with tweets) and the HYPOCRISY of Warner Brothers Discovery not allowing Tony Khan to pay tribute to Jay on AEW TV. And then... WE'VE GOT A TON OF NEWS on Vince McMahon's latest hush money payment as part of his settlement with Rita Chatterton... Nick Khan's interview with Bill Simmons talking Vince's return, throwing shade at Tony Khan and one jaw-dropping comment that I could not believe... the major segment CANCELED for Raw XXX this Monday, what it's being replaced with and what it means for the status of The Rock at Wrestlemania... ROYAL RUMBLE 2023 PREDICTIONS for the winners and possible surprise entrants... New Japan and Pro Wrestling NOAH produce the hottest worked-shoot angle in years at Wrestle Kingdom...
