Mack Wilberg). The Tabernacle Choir Life can be so unpredictable—joys and sorrows, beautiful blessings and distressing difficulties, can come unexpectedly. Our life's dreams and plans can change in an instant. We all know this to be true. So how can we find peace amid such turbulence? Horatio Spafford knew something about life's unexpected challenges. He was a successful attorney and real estate investor who lost a fortune in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Around the same time, his beloved four-year-old son died of scarlet fever. Thinking a vacation would do his family some good, he sent his wife and four daughters on a ship to England, planning to join them after he finished some pressing business at home. However, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was involved in a terrible collision and sunk. More than 200 people lost their lives, including all four of Horatio Spafford's precious daughters. His wife, Anna, survived the tragedy. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to her husband that began: “Saved alone. What shall I do?” Horatio immediately set sail for England. At one point during his voyage, the captain of the ship, aware of the tragedy that had struck the Spafford family, summoned Horatio to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had occurred. As Horatio thought about his daughters, words of comfort and hope filled his heart and mind. He wrote them down, and they have since become a well-beloved hymn: When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll— Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to know It is well, it is well with my soul. Perhaps we cannot always say that everything is well in all aspects of our lives. There will always be storms to face, and sometimes there will be tragedies. But with faith in a loving God and with trust in His divine help, we can confidently say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.”   Watch this video with subtitles at-  https://youtu.be/Eg5O2y1UXw4?si=JvgZ32hBe4iqMK3J   The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square 891K subscribers 5,209,607 views Aug 2, 2017 For the story behind this song:     • It Is Well with My Soul - The Spoken ...   The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square perform Mack Wilberg's arrangement of "It Is Well with My Soul," by Philip P. Oh, voice of the Lord! I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me.   American Conservative University Podcast (ACU) is not an official representative for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Philip P. Bliss met an untimely death but made a profound and lasting impact on American Christian music. This hymn, Let the Lower Lights be Burning, is emblematic of his ability to turn a story into a moving hymn. The lower lights: those lights that are not the primary navigational lighthouse but are those aids to navigation mariners need to negotiate difficult waters to find the channel and come into port. Do we not see ourselves in a similar role as lights to those who are searching for the channel, the channel of life? If we see Christ as that "Light of the World" that shines out to all, are we not His "hands and feet" and in this case, His light that shines through us so that our family, friends, and neighbors will be brought safely into the harbor of God's grace. Yours in Christ: Pastoral Letters from Resurrection, State College

Welcome to Yours in Christ, Pastoral Letters from Resurrection in State College, Pennsylvania. I'm Pastor Zach Simmons, and this is letter number 12, “It Is Finished,” the fourth in a series of five letters about Jesus' words from the cross. For more, visit resurrectionopc.org/letters. Dear Resurrection, John 19:30 says, “When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished.'” So, what exactly was “finished” when Jesus spoke those words from the cross just before He died? The first thing that was “finished” was Jesus' fulfillment of the Old Testament Scriptures that prophesied and pointed forward in various ways to His crucifixion. John repeatedly says that the things Jesus experienced happened to fulfill the Old Testament Scriptures (John 13:18; 15:25; 17:12; 18:9, 32; 19:24, 28, 36, 38). In verse 29, Jesus had just been given sour wine in response to his cry of thirst in verse 28, echoing and bringing to completion the experience of David in Psalm 69:21, where David says of his own enemies that “for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.” Jesus taught that the whole Old Testament was written in anticipation of his life and work—not only the direct Messianic predictions of the prophets, but also the images of the sacrificial system and even the historical experiences of Israel and its leaders (John 5:39; Luke 24:27). In his final suffering and death, Jesus' fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and history accelerated and intensified, and in His final moments, He knew this Scripture-fulfillment aspect of His suffering was complete when He said, “It is finished.” A second thing that was “finished” when Jesus spoke these words was His perfect obedience to God the Father on our behalf. “He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:8), submitting His human will to the divine will of His Father (Matthew 26:39), and fulfilling the charge He had been given (John 10:18). Here, just before entrusting His spirit into His Father's hand, Jesus affirmed that He had fought the good fight and finished the race (2 Timothy 4:7). A third thing that was “finished” (all except the fast-approaching experience of death itself) was Jesus' atoning suffering for sinners. On the cross, Jesus had finished enduring the full weight of God's wrath that our sins deserved, an innocent victim vicariously bearing the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53:6), a Good Shepherd laying down His life for His sheep (John 10:11). Guilty, vile, and helpless, we; Spotless Lamb of God was he; Full atonement! can it be? Hallelujah! what a Savior! (Philip P. Bliss, “Man of Sorrows! What a Name,” TPH #352) Grace-Based Action Point There is nothing you can add to the sufferings of Jesus to make you more acceptable to God. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.… God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do” (Romans 8:1, 3). Never forget that Jesus' work for you is a finished work, and you cannot add any of your work to it to make it better. His sacrifice cannot be repeated. His obedience cannot be supplemented. His grace cannot be improved upon. Lifted up was He to die, “It is finished!” was His cry; Now in heaven exalted high; Hallelujah! what a Savior! Yours in Christ, Pastor Simmons

Though he only lived 38 years before his life here on earth was cut short, Philip P. Bliss left us all with a tremendous gift in the words and musical melodies he wrote and composed. How many individuals have come to know Christ because of his hymns? How many have been lifted up and encouraged, or challenged and convicted, as they hear the hymns or sing the words? "Wonderful Words of Life" was written at the specific request of a friend, Fleming Revell, of Revell Publishing, as he prepared to launch a new Sunday School paper with the title "Words of Life." He intended to use the paper to encourage people to read and study their Bibles, and he asked Philip Bliss to write a hymn for that purpose. Philip agreed, and the world was gifted with "Wonderful Words of Life." Join me in today's episode as we look at more of Philip Bliss' life, and what those "words of life" mean for each of us.https://wordwisehymns.com/2011/06/06/wonderful-words-of-life/

Scripture:Ephesians 2: 1-22 (NRSV)From Death to Life2 You were dead through the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. 3 All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. One in christ11 So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by those who are called “the circumcision”—a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— 12 remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. 15 He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, 16 and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. 17 So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18 for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.Worship Set:“Breathe On Us” - Ed Cash, Kari Jobe“Good Good Father” - Pat Barrett, Anthony Brown“Living Hope” - Brian Johnson, Phil Wickham“Doxology” - Traditional“It Is Well With My Soul / Lord I Need You” - Horatio Gates Spafford, Philip P. Jesus refers to Himself numerous times in the Scriptures as "the Light of the world." The man blind from birth who had his sight restored by Jesus declared, "Once I was blind, but now I see!" In Genesis 1:3, Jesus said, "Let there be light." In the end of the Bible, in Revelation 21, we read that Jesus is the light of the city of heaven. Philip P. He graduated from DePaul University with a degree in Religious Studies, as well as Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies. Nic received his Master of Divinity from Chicago Theological Seminary in 2014. In the few years prior to coming to Unity Church, he lived in Michigan where his wife pursued her law degree. During this time, Nic worked full time for the UUA in Stewardship and Development, and part time with the UU Church of Greater Lansing. Nic feels blessed to learn and grow as a ministerial intern at Unity Church this year and is looking forward to getting to know the community. About the Worship Associate Rochelle Lockridge was lured by the sweet siren’s song of the Unity Choir singing from the balcony in 2002. She has been a member of the choir and the Unity Church family ever since. After careful consideration she has expanded her involvement to include serving as a worship associate. Rochelle lives in Maplewood, newly venturing out to build her own management consulting business. In addition to following her passions in grand-parenting, music, and digital storytelling, she has recently rediscovered the joys of Ballroom dancing. About the Musicians Footfall is what happened when folk, punk, rock, classical and good common sense converged. If a label helps, alt country is where we landed. We hope you’ll agree but mostly just want you along for the ride. Footfall is Jim Christiansen and Debbie Cushman. We’ve been playing music together for about fifteen years. Jim plays guitar, slide guitar and mandolin. He also sings a mean harmony line and can be nudged into lead. Debbie brings guitar, vocals, piano and dreams of fiddle playing. Songwriting is shared and so is banter over covers. The day jobs pay for the gear. The music feeds the soul.  Kathleen Bartholomay, a long-time member, has enjoyed a rich history of musical involvement at Unity Church: accompanying Unity’s adult choir, coordinating summer music, and sharing her musical gifts in recitals, memorial services, weddings, and other occasions. She sings with the St. Paul Vocal Forum, and is completing her training to become a music therapist. Kathleen holds a Master of Music degree from University of Nebraska-Lincoln. www.twincitiespianist.com
