What does it look like to be entrusted with immense responsibility after years of hiddenness and hardship? In this week's exploration of the life of Joseph, Paul examines Genesis 41:37-57 to highlight how God elevates the faithful to positions of influence for the sake of others.Following his interpretation of Pharaoh's dreams, Joseph is set over all the land of Egypt, clothed in fine linen and given the King's own signet ring. We see a man who remained trustworthy under pressure, gathering and storing grain in such abundance that it could not be measured. Just as Pharaoh instructed the famished people to "Go to Joseph" for the bread they needed, we are reminded to look beyond earthly rulers and ultimately "Go to Jesus" - doing whatever He tells us as we trust in His sovereign provision. If you have missed any part of this series or want to catch up on all the sermons and resources, you can find them here: https://www.cgseapoint.co.za/joseph

John talks with Carl Maughan, who is a Republican candidate for the Kansas House of Representatives in District 100
In this episode, we bring you the wrap-up of our "When You Pray" series as Paul dives deep into the transformative shift where we move from adoration into the postures of Ask and Yield. Walking through the last half of the Lord's Prayer, this final message unpacks what it truly means to depend on God for our daily bread, navigate the messy but freeing reality of forgiveness, and lean into His divine protection. This episode will challenge you to move past overcomplicating your prayer life and instead focus on keeping it simple, real, and consistent. Tune in to close out the series with us, find your rhythm, and explore all the resources at www.cgseapoint.co.za/when-you-pray
In our latest episode, we dive into the powerful, life-giving practice of Rejoicing as we walk through the opening movements of the Lord's Prayer: “Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done.” Drawing on both timeless scripture and fascinating neuroscience, which reveals that our brain's "joy centre" never loses its capacity to grow, this message reminds us that we were intricately wired to anchor our emotional and spiritual resilience in the continuous, soul-exhilarating joy of God. Instead of settling for a quiet, dutiful faith, we are challenged to actively expand our capacity for joy through highly practical rhythms like speaking truth to our own souls, praying the Psalms, and discovering our own unique style of worship. It's an inspiring call to move past silent compliance and step into the vibrant praise we were created for; and as always, you can explore all our series resources at www.cgseapoint.co.za/when-you-pray
In a world consumed by anxious toil and a relentless culture of hurry, our latest podcast episode invites you to hit pause and realign your heart with what matters most. Grounded in the timeless wisdom of the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 127, Paul challenges us to transition from competing with God to truly worshipping Him, revealing that the ultimate destination of our spiritual journey is not just a distant heaven, but intimate communion with the Father. By confronting the five critical questions to eliminate hurry, this message serves as a practical, unhurried guide to transforming your daily blocks of time into meaningful moments of prayer, rest, and surrender. It is a compelling call to step away from panic and empty performance, and instead step into a life of deep, purposeful connection. In this episode, Paul kicks off our new series, When You Pray, by exploring what it truly means to step into "the secret place" of prayer. Grounded in Matthew 6:5-8, Paul unpacks Jesus' core teachings on prayer through a three-part framework: The Warning against performing for others, The Invitation to shut the door and meet with a Father who sees in secret, and The Correction to abandon empty, repetitive phrases. He gets honest about why prayer can feel so difficult, confronting the seven major hurdles we face—from busyness and doubt to pride and spiritual opposition. Whether you feel like you've just been dabbling or find yourself distracted, this message is a call to move toward a disciplined, devoted partnership with God through confession, commitment, and community. Tune in, find out how you can get involved with Common Ground Sea Point's upcoming June prayer initiatives, including our monthly prayer meetings, life groups, and day of fasting, and if you have missed anything or would like to find all our resources for the series, head over to this page - https://www.cgseapoint.co.za/when-you-pray

In this week's teaching, Paul explores Jesus' call to total integrity in Matthew 5:33-37. Jesus confronts the ancient habit of using elaborate oaths to mask dishonesty, inviting us instead to a life where a simple "Yes" or "No" is sufficient. The message provides a "deeper diagnosis" of our speech, revealing how lies often stem from heart idols - like the need for approval, control, or security - where we trust human opinion or material stability more than God. The alternative is to "put off falsehood" and live with a commitment to truth that honours our connection as one body. By resolving to live with integrity, we ensure that while lies may exist in the world, they do not triumph through us. The Beautiful Resistance: Week 8 - Marriage, Divorce & Grace. In this episode, we take a deep dive into the complexities of marriage, divorce, and grace as part of The Beautiful Resistance series. We explore the shifting marital landscape - where fewer people are marrying and divorce rates are climbing - and contrast these trends with Jesus' radical teaching on the sanctity of the marital bond. Drawing from Matthew 5 and 19, we discuss the profound difference between a transactional contract and a gospel-centred covenant designed for mutual transformation. Whether you are single, married, or navigating the pain of a broken relationship, this conversation points us toward the ultimate hope found in the Marriage of the Lamb and the relentless grace of God that meets us in our hardness of heart. In this week's episode, Paul dives into the challenging topic of Lust, using Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5:27-30 to explore how we can live with integrity in a hyper-sexualised culture. We move beyond simple rules to discuss the "Integrity of Sex," contrasting a transactional "Contract" mindset with the "Covenant" model a relational foundation based on identity, trust, and the Gospel that leads to a zone of security and greater freedom. Paul unpacks the "Unwanted Behaviour Cycle," showing how unmet longings and isolation can lead to shame, and points us toward a source of healing that involves reinforcing our true identity in Jesus and finding wholeness through healthy community. In a world that often validates - and even celebrates - outrage as a primary tool for change, Jesus invites us into a radical and "beautiful resistance" against the destructive power of anger. This week, we explore the profound shift from external compliance to internal transformation, looking at how anger impacts our relationships with ourselves, others, and God. By understanding the deeper "unmet longings" that drive our reactions, we can begin to trade the cycle of brokenness for a path toward wholeness and reconciliation. Tune in as we reflect on how to cultivate a righteousness that goes beyond the surface and leads to true human flourishing.CATCH UP ON THE SERIES: Explore the full series, download the sermon slides, and read through the weekly summaries at: https://www.cgseapoint.co.za/the-beautiful-resistance
Are you looking for the King you want, or the King you actually need? In the second instalment of our Easter Encounters series, Lee dives into the dramatic tension of Holy Week, where the conflicting expectations of religious leaders and revolutionaries collided with the humble reality of Jesus. From the palm branches of the "Royal Entry" to the startling choice of a donkey over a war horse, we explore how Jesus fulfilled the ancient prophecy of Zechariah to become a ruler of peace rather than a tyrant of war. Tune in to encounter the King who traded a worldly throne for a cross just to bring us home. You can find our full series page along with all its resources here: https://www.cgseapoint.co.za/easter-encounters

In this episode, we dive into Matthew 5:17-20 to explore Jesus' profound relationship with the Old Testament. Far from abolishing the Law, Jesus reveals himself as its ultimate fulfillment - the perfect high priest and sacrifice who embodies everything the prophets foretold. We discuss the challenge of living a "beautiful resistance" in a world of moral compromise, moving beyond the external legalism of the Pharisees toward a "whole-person righteousness" that aligns our hearts with God's kingdom.CATCH UP ON THE SERIES: Explore the full series, download the sermon slides, and read through the weekly summaries at: https://www.cgseapoint.co.za/the-beautiful-resistance
What happens when a comfortable life starts to feel small? We sit down with Barry Maughan to trace an 8,000‑mile drive from Alexandria to Africa's southern tip in a 1969 VW combi bus, and the deeper journey from chasing success to finding meaning. A sudden coup in Libya shut a border and opened a path that led through dust tracks, steel‑belted tyres, and the unvarnished generosity of strangers who refused payment and offered help with a smile. We explore the difference between governments and people, and why most danger comes from regimes, not villagers. Barry shares the Cairo friendship that quietly reshaped everything. Serendipity kept showing up, including a stop at a radio station in Addis Ababa between 1969 and 1975, which led to a career in broadcasting, covering history in real-time and later hosting programs for the Voice of America's English to Africa service.Along the way, we talk practical grit and tender moments: navigating without GPS, patching tubes under acacia thorns, and an unforgettable exchange between two mothers, linked by the same protective love. With a one‑year‑old in the back, the road demanded preparation and humility, and returned lessons about global citizenship, family, and care that outlast any itinerary. Beneath the African Sun, Barry's new book, gathers the photos, the near‑misses, and the quiet truths about travel, courage, and the people who make a journey possible. If stories like this move you, follow the show, share this episode with a friend, and leave a review. In our latest episode, Paul challenges us to reclaim our identity as the salt of the earth and the light of the world in an age of deep cultural compromise. We tackle the modern tension between "following your inner light" and the radical, sacrificial devotion to Jesus that actually brings about justice and change. This isn't just a call to be "good people" - it is a summons to a radical, boundary-crossing engagement that prevents decay and gives glory to the Father. In this episode of The Beautiful Resistance, Paul Maughan explores the second half of the Beatitudes, revealing how the Sermon on the Mount describes the life we live when the Holy Spirit has His way with us. From the call to be truly merciful and pure in heart to the "great paradox" that the church is often most intense when facing cultural hostility, we dive into what it looks like to live out these counter-cultural values. We also tackle the common misconception of peacemaking, moving beyond simple conflict avoidance into a deeper, biblical maturity.CATCH UP ON THE SERIES: Explore the full series, download the sermon slides, and read through the weekly summaries at: https://www.cgseapoint.co.za/the-beautiful-resistance

Have you ever wondered what Africa was like before satellite phones, GPS navigation, and carefully curated safari experiences? Barry Maughan's remarkable journey from Alexandria to South Africa during the tumultuous late 1960s offers a window into a continent few modern travelers will ever experience.Barry's adventure began with a chance encounter that would set the tone for his entire expedition. After meeting an Egyptian general, what could have been a casual exchange blossomed into extraordinary access to Cairo during the War of Attrition. This serendipitous connection – having his VW camper transported by train while being guarded by armed soldiers – illustrates the unexpected kindness that defined his journey through Africa. What makes this story truly exceptional is the historical context. Barry traveled through countries experiencing the early days of independence, navigated borders during the rise of dictators like Idi Amin and Muammar Gaddafi, and witnessed a continent in transition. Without electronic tethers – no phones, no GPS, not even reliable maps – Barry and his family relied on ingenuity, observation, and the goodwill of strangers. When their son Kevin was born in Ethiopia, this blue-eyed, towheaded child became what Barry calls their "goodwill ambassador," opening doors to experiences and connections that might otherwise have remained closed.Throughout our conversation, Barry returns to a fundamental truth discovered on dusty roads and in remote villages: behind cultural differences and diverse circumstances, people share universal desires – safety for their families, enough food on the table, and minimal government interference in their lives. The Africans they met consistently offered help without expectation of payment, whether pushing their vehicle from mud, guiding them across rivers, or simply sharing what little food they had.Barry's book "Beneath the African Sun" captures these experiences not for commercial success but to preserve a legacy of adventure and human connection for future generations. At 84, his definition of adventure remains powerful: "searching for the heretofore unknown" and "not being afraid of what's around the next bend." His journey reminds us that the most meaningful adventures aren't about conquering places but connecting with them – a lesson as relevant today as it was fifty years ago.Check out Barry's website www.barrymaughan.com to learn more about Barry and get a copy of his book, "Beneath the African Sun."Want to be a guest on Journey with Jake?
