Bob's Movie Club Presents: Planes, Trains, & Automobiles. John Hughes' 1987 classic didn't please the whole gang all these years later. John Candy is heart warming, but were Steve Martin's comedy chops wasted?

ABC News Correspondent Jim Ryan talks about how the week ahead is expected to be the busiest ever for travel. Triple-A projects nearly 80-million Americans will go more than 50 miles for the holiday. The TSA estimates it will screen more than 18-million passengers through next Monday.
Filmmaker John Hughes was a master of the human condition, his characters always felt rich in authenticity. After a string of acclaimed teen films, he set his sights on adults in 1987's "Planes, Trains & Automobiles," a heartfelt road comedy about the horrors of holiday travel. Steve Cozzolino returns to the show and joins Dennis to savor the comic flavors of this Thanksgiving feast. Remember, when you're telling your little stories, here's a good idea - have a point. It makes it so much more interesting for the listener! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The whole gang's back together for the first time in a month! This week, we saw faculty at both NYU and UNC-Chapel Hill, among other schools, launch grading strikes to demand amnesty for protestors brutally arrested during encampment sweeps. Also this week, train drivers in the UK launched yet another series of rolling strikes as the train operators continue to believe they can get away with not paying drivers. In another major act of corporate hubris, Boeing has locked out their in house firefighters after demanding they accept a top rate that only arrives after 19 years on the job. The UAW election at Mercedes is this week and the company is running scared, pulling out all the stops to try and halt another landslide victory. We also check in on the rampant union busting at Apple stores around the country, as they catch a lot less heat than Starbucks for using many of the same tactics. So grab a glass of wine or even some premature eggnog, and join us as we dive into an unmissable Thanksgiving/holiday favorite on this episode of NO NOTES. As Kelly argues for the film's place in the hallowed halls of cinematic perfection, she says: "I've been, I've seen a million Hallmark Christmas movies that don't understand what this movie comprehends at a bone-deep genetic level. Every action is more compelling and more moving when it's anchored in fully realized and developed characters. John Hughes wrote a beautiful movie. One that has moments that make me laugh incredibly hard while also reducing me to tears every time I watch it. Each component is astonishing on its own, but combined, they create something transcendent." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/guilty-pleasures-film/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/guilty-pleasures-film/support

Wales's transport infrastructure and services are rarely (if ever) renowned for their world-leading design or operation but even by historical standards, the last few years have been notably challenging. However, with a new and energetic deputy minister holding the brief and the pandemic receding into history, is the Welsh Government starting to turn the corner or are the people of Wales condemned to spend another decade in the slow lane? Our panel of experts discuss the recent announcement and criticism of the Welsh Government's roads review, the huge jump in South Wales Metro costs, bus service funding and franchising, and the ongoing travails of publicly-owned Cardiff Airport. We also discuss the UK Government's increasingly bizarre classification of multi-billion-pound English rail projects (HS2, TransPennine Route Upgrades) as 'England and Wales' projects and consider what Wales could do if it received the same Barnett Formula consequentials as Scotland or Northern Ireland from the projects. Happy Holidays from Reels and Wheels! For this episode, Sid & James get into the holiday season with Planes Trains & Automobiles - a John Hughes classic about the worst attempt at holiday travel ever. This movie definitely delivers in the "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" department, with a glorious assortment of malais-era cars, but it's also an excellent movie that rises above comedy by creating two deep, relatable characters. Plus we have a who's who of 1980's background character actors and an unlikely Star Trek actor cameo. Send us your feedback, @ReelsandWheels!

This podcast has been overrun by gremlins! We were supposed to do a Thanksgiving episode on Planes Trains & Automobiles, but the powers that be said, "No, you're doing Gremlins." Those powers may or may not be gremlins. (Send help!) Anyway, Gremlins has been described as It's A Wonderful Life by way of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and while that thematic well runs deep, the film is mostly concerned with lots and lots of puppet mayhem! The soundtrack album is short, but features some strange choices, including tracks from Peter Gabriel, Quarterflash and Michael Sembello. We'll also discuss a few of the holiday needledrops, which have become classic scenes in their own right. So grab a glass of egg nog and join us for the wild ride that is Gremlins! There aren't a whole lot of Thanksgiving films out there but we decided to keep the themed Substantive Cinema shows going this year (last month we covered The Thing for Halloween Listen Here! and we're likely to cover a Christmas themed movie next month). Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was an immediate hit when it was released in 1987 and it has endured as a Thanksgiving classic. It's a classic odd couple road comedy. Steve Martin & John Candy star as unlikely (and sometimes unwilling) travel companions and endure just about every possible traveling inconvenience humanly possible. The humor is subjective as we discuss on the show (thought just about everything John Candy does works for Philip) but we selected this film because of the themes of loving our neighbor, and being gracious toward strangers. We never know what others are going through or how meaningful our kindness may be to them. Enjoy the show and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
