If you grew up in the 80s, you grew up in the era of physical media. Our videotape collections allowed us to watch our favorite movies and TV shows over and over, allowing us to develop a deep appreciation for the things we loved. But how did we get here, and how did it all end up changing so drastically? Today we not only revisit the origins of the VCR itself but look at the VHS/Betamax format wars of the 80s and the worthy third competitor: Laserdisc. We also look at the growth of home video, the time when the VCR was under attack by Hollywood, and the progression of the VCR to DVD, Blu-Ray, and then streaming. This episode is also a look at how physical media has become a bit of an endangered species, but why it still has an important place in our modern world. It seems funny to think, but in the early 80s, a gigantic industry almost came to a grinding halt... Video games--and arcades--had grown so quickly,  and on such a wide scale,  that many began to ask if it was ok for our kids to be playing them so much.  This is when video games and arcades became under attack as parents, watch groups, and entire cities started to crack down on them. From the U.K. to Canada, to America, regulations began to be put in place to limit young people from even stepping foot into an arcade. The attack on video games even went all the way to the Supreme Court, and a generation of kids didn't realize how close they got to losing something they loved--forever... Welcome back to a Thanksgiving Edition of the Video Store Podcast! We've selected a veritable cornucopia of Thanksgiving-themed specials and films for you to watch this week, so make a plate and join us for a feast of fun and festive Thanksgiving recommendations. First up is Garfield's Thanksgiving from 1989. This delightful special puts Garfield on a diet, sees Jon and Liz on their first date, and will give you a belly full of laughter. It also brings back a fan-favorite character from the Garfield and Friends animated series and other Garfield specials—Grandma, voiced by the late, great Pat Carroll. Join us on the couch for a feast of laughter with Garfield. The next course is the iconic episode from the 1978 sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, “Turkeys Away.” Even if you've never seen a single episode of WKRP, you can still watch “Turkeys Away” and still understand everything that's going on, and will laugh along with the show. You too will believe turkeys can fly when you watch “Turkeys Away.”Our third course this week is the evergreen Thanksgiving staple, 1973's A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It's not the holidays without the Peanuts gang and that includes Thanksgiving. Make a plate of toast, pretzel sticks, popcorn, and jelly beans, and wash it all down with a parfait as you enjoy A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving with us, you sly dog. Finally, the John Hughes 1987 comedy classic, Planes, Trains & Automobiles is a fantastic dessert to polish off your Thanksgiving celebrations. Filled with good humor, screwball mishaps, and a lot of heart, it's the perfect finish to your Thanksgiving celebrations. We recommend watching this film with your best buddy, and we hope that if you do any traveling this Thanksgiving season, you have a much easier time than Neal and Del. We also hope you don't have to race Kevin Bacon for a cab either. Thanks for joining us this week on the Video Store Podcast. We hope you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving with the ones you love, and enjoy these Thanksgiving specials along with us. This is a public episode. Welcome to Series Two of our podcast!Welcome to the Second Series of The Wine Pod 'For The Love of Wine':Join us on a journey through our unique approach to wine, enriching your understanding and enjoyment along the way.In our latest episode, we delve into the patch between storing and opening our wine.To complement the podcast, here are our expert tips on decanting:The groundwork:* Know When to Decant: Decanting is beneficial for certain types of wine, particularly older red wines with sediment or full-bodied young wines that can benefit from aeration. Lighter-bodied wines and delicate whites generally don't require decanting but this shouldn't stop you.* Prepare the Decanter: Ensure that the decanter is clean and free of any odours or residues that could affect the wine's flavour. Rinse the decanter with clean water before use and dry it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.* Position the Bottle: Before decanting, stand the wine bottle upright for several hours or overnight if it has sediment. This allows the sediment to settle at the bottom of the bottle, making it easier to separate from the wine during decanting.* Decant with Care: Pour the wine slowly and steadily into the decanter, holding the bottle steadily to avoid disturbing any sediment that may have settled. Use a gentle, controlled motion to prevent splashing and oxidation.* Watch for Sediment: When decanting older red wines, pour slowly and watch for sediment as you near the end of the bottle. Stop pouring before the sediment reaches the neck of the bottle, leaving it behind to ensure a clear pour.* Aerate as Needed: Depending on the wine and your preference, you can choose to aerate the wine further by swirling it gently in the decanter or by allowing it to sit for a period before serving. Aeration can help soften tannins and enhance aromas and flavours.* Serve at the Right Temperature: Once decanted, serve the wine at the appropriate temperature for its style. Red wines are typically served at slightly cooler than room temperature, while whites and sparkling wines are served chilled or just above fridge temperature at around 10 - 14 degrees. Here is all the info about the episode:Will's wine of the week:DeMorgenzon ‘Reserve' Chenin Blanc 2020/21, South AfricaLuke's thought of the week:It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.References:Masi 'Costasera' Amarone della Valpolicella.2010 Brunello di Montalcino, Il Poggione, Tuscany, Italy - whats in our glass.Double decanting.Decanter with Aerator.Planes, Trains & Automobiles - movie.Bandol Rosé - apellation in Provence France.Lambrusco - style of sparkling wine.As always please like, share and comment.Stay Corked - Luke & Will This is a public episode. Every action is more compelling and more moving when it's anchored in fully realized and developed characters. John Hughes wrote a beautiful movie. Wales's transport infrastructure and services are rarely (if ever) renowned for their world-leading design or operation but even by historical standards, the last few years have been notably challenging. However, with a new and energetic deputy minister holding the brief and the pandemic receding into history, is the Welsh Government starting to turn the corner or are the people of Wales condemned to spend another decade in the slow lane? Our panel of experts discuss the recent announcement and criticism of the Welsh Government's roads review, the huge jump in South Wales Metro costs, bus service funding and franchising, and the ongoing travails of publicly-owned Cardiff Airport. We also discuss the UK Government's increasingly bizarre classification of multi-billion-pound English rail projects (HS2, TransPennine Route Upgrades) as 'England and Wales' projects and consider what Wales could do if it received the same Barnett Formula consequentials as Scotland or Northern Ireland from the projects. Donna Reed and Eric Seemann are both professional real estate agents. Donna lives and works in Tucson Arizona with Keller Williams Southern Arizona while Eric lives and works in San Antonio Texas with Keller Williams Heritage. They are also siblings, and they grew up in a small Northwest Ohio village of Lindsey. Their idyllic small-town childhood laid the foundation for what would become the structure of their lives and careers in real estate. We hope you will join us as we reminisce, reflect, and correlate how our childhood and life in rural Ohio still impacts our dealings with our clients today. Hear about Donna's 30 days in Europe and how what she experienced and saw compares and/or is similar to what we list and show here in the United States.   And there's something about a pizza oven....

This week on Juskow in the City we travel from top to bottom. Starting from the Statue of Liberty, all the way up to Harlem and stops in Asbury Park and Times Square in between. Marina Franklin and I had a beautiful outdoor gig in Asbury Park, NJ. Unfortunately, NJ Transit decided to go on strike just in time BUT, it all works out, even though the woman driving us home got so angry she got a parking ticket she began to pelt me with Scones. I only wish I was making that up. Then, trying to find an electric citibike in Harlem that didn't have the electric battery stolen was quite the task. And finally, seeing Mr. Saturday Night for a second time in two weeks to see if Billy Crystal put my line suggestion in. Did he? Listen and see -- on an all new Juskow in the City.

There aren't a whole lot of Thanksgiving films out there but we decided to keep the themed Substantive Cinema shows going this year (last month we covered The Thing for Halloween Listen Here! and we're likely to cover a Christmas themed movie next month). Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was an immediate hit when it was released in 1987 and it has endured as a Thanksgiving classic. It's a classic odd couple road comedy. Steve Martin & John Candy star as unlikely (and sometimes unwilling) travel companions and endure just about every possible traveling inconvenience humanly possible. The humor is subjective as we discuss on the show (thought just about everything John Candy does works for Philip) but we selected this film because of the themes of loving our neighbor, and being gracious toward strangers. We never know what others are going through or how meaningful our kindness may be to them. Enjoy the show and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
