1987 US science fiction parody film by Mel Brooks
POPULARITY
We watch The Sure Thing, the second movie in our summer road trip series. What Cusack's teenage adoption has to do with the film. The charm of an early, unpolished Reiner film, and his old-fashioned world view. How raunchy was this movie? Zuniga's surprising performance, and the tragedy of Princess Vespa. What happened to John Cusack? FInally, we rate this as a road trip movie out of five mini vans. All this and more on this week's Log It! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Hosted by Andrew Quinn and Darren Mooney, and this week with special guests Donal Sweeney, The 250 is a weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released Saturdays at 6pm GMT. This week, a special commentary on Mel Brook's Spaceballs. A long time ago in a franchise not so far away, the evil Spaceballs travel from planet to planet, harvesting their atmospheres to sustain their own lifestyle. They kidnap Princess Vespa from the Planet Druidia, prompting her father to hire the devilish rogue Lone Star to rescue her. So begins an epic adventure about the power of Schwarz. At time of recording, it was not ranked on the list of the best movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.
Wes and Nick tackle this classic movie from Mel Brooks that will make you say Skroob Star Wars.Plot:On the peaceful planet Druidia, King Roland attempts to marry his daughter Princess Vespa to Prince Valium, but Vespa and her loyal droid Dot Matrix escape during her wedding. After wasting the fresh air on the distant planet Spaceball, corrupt President Skroob orders the arch-villain henchman Dark Helmet to kidnap Princess Vespa to force King Roland to provide them with the code to Druidia's atmosphere. Under those circumstances, the seasoned mercenary Lone Starr and his devoted half-human, half-canine sidekick Barf try to save the princess. In the meantime, the ruthless loan shark Pizza the Hutt is after them. But only he who can harness The Schwartz, a mystical cosmic force, will save the day.Support the show:

Chapter 13 of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire (1991) (EU: 9 ABY) by Timothy Zahn. The Story So FarWhile looking for hints on Dagobah on how best to train the next generation of Jedi, Luke Skywalker finds a strange device in the Dark Side Cave outside Yoda's hut. This hint points him to Lando Calrissian and his path converges with Leia Organa-Solo and Han Solo as they head to the Athega system. After two foiled kidnappings on separate diplomatic missions, the couple are looking to get help outside New Republic jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Grand Admiral Thrawn's schemes are coming to a head as he has allied himself with Master Joruus C'baoth, clone and Dark Jedi. Captain Pelleaon devises a plan to disseminate information that might lure Luke to C'baoth instead of sending more noghri to capture him. All paths converge over Nkllon just as Luke and the Millenium Falcon arrive. Leaving us in the suspense as the space battle commences.Chapter 13Luke and the Falcon engage in a dogfight over Nkllon, during which Luke's mind is touched by another Jedi, commanding Luke to seek him out. Despite losing time during the contact, Luke and the Falcon chase off the Imperial raid. Our point of view then switches to Thrawn and Pellaeon reflecting on the aftermath. Thrawn's satisfaction at the successful acquisition of 51 mole miners is overshadowed by C'baoth's declaration of making contact with Luke. The Jedi Master insists that it is time for his own trap to be laid, leaving Pellaeon and Thrawn to scheme on the disillusionment of C'baoth's self-importance. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are using the Schwartz, rescuing a princess, and taking down the biggest small baddie in the galaxy in the 1987 film from Mel Brooks, Spaceballs. Dark Helmet is on an unstoppable rampage in his quest to steal all of that delicious air from Planet Druidia. There's only one space bandit who can stop him and rescue the beautiful Princess Vespa in the process. That man is Lone Starr. Oh, and his trusty dog-man companion/probably sometimes the actual brains of the outfit, Barf. Can't leave home without him! Faced with nearly insurmountable odds, our intrepid pair of heroes learn what it takes to become true space-wizards (or whatever the hell Jedi actually are). It's the Hero's Journey here, folks! We've got definite story beats to make along the way to saving the world. There's also the matter of a massive debt to paid off, so they can't go in unprepared. But Dark Helmet is no pushover. He's going to make the mission as difficult as possible. There will be a battle the likes of which this or any other galaxy has ever seen. It's going to be one heck of a hilarious ride. YES IT'S A CAR MOVIE! Sorry. We've already had that question a few times before people even knew we were recording this episode. Comedian/Member of Plan B Improv and friend of the show CB Wilkins joins James and Sid to talk about Spaceballs! In this epic Mel Brooks comedy, the Star Wars universe is parodied so well that George Lucas himself blessed the movie, telling Brooks it would be a great action film even without the Star Wars references. And he's right. Brooks did an amazing job constructing this parody of the scifi universe, creating great characters and an infinite number of quotable lines. And yes, there are iconic cars - particularly Lonestar's ship, which is a barely modified 1986 Winnebago. Princess Vespa cruises in a space Mercedes, and the evil Spaceballs comb the desert in a Volkswagen Thing! Subscribe to Reels and Wheels on iTunes or Stitcher and leave us some feedback! Turn your fun dial to “terror” as we run through this 1982 low budget horror flick that serves as Daphne Zuniga’s debut. She was Princess Vespa in Spaceballs. One critic calls the movie “intensely, aggressively, crudely, claustrophobically typical.” How can a movie be typical in those ways? Find out with us! Also, Jason gruesomely beats a joke to death.
