It's a different kind of Litecast this week as about 30 minutes before our scheduled recording time, Iowa State and Steve Prohm announced they would be mutually parting ways. Matt, Austin, Jared, and Dylan have an in depth discussion about the news, the surprise timing of the announcement, and how they'll ultimately remember the Prohm era of Iowa State hoops. With the news out there comes time for reckless speculation about what happens next. Some of the big rumored names (Hoiberg, Otz, Altman, etc.) are discussed as we debate the merits and drawbacks of each guy. The Hoiberg discussion was polarizing as to be expected.Beyond Iowa State, the guys also give some first round upset picks for the NCAA Tournament (how good does it feel to have a bracket in hand?) and try to come up with a reason not to pick chalk into the Final Four. Thanks to Es Tas Bar & Grill for their continued support of this podcast. See you next week where perhaps a coach will be hired.
On the second hour of The Nick Handley Show, Nick gets into Iowa State letting go to their Men's Head Basketball Coach Steve Prohm and who could take his spot. Next, it didn't take newly fired Richard Pitino long to land on his feet and get a new job less than 24 hours of being fired. Then we talk Husker volleyball with Lincoln Arneal of the Omaha World Herald. We end the hour with the New England Patriots being very active in free agency this year.
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for March 16. So we have a genuine good news and bad news situation about the weather. The bad news is that we have more wintry mix to look forward to the next few days; the good news is the high temperatures will be back in the 50s and 60s by this Friday. Back in the bad news present, Tuesday shouldn't be too bad. While the National Weather Service predicts some areas of fog before 11 a.m. in the Cedar Rapids area, it should otherwise be mostly cloudy with a high near 40 with calm winds. Current predictions are for Wednesday and Thursday to be our next troublesome days with the potential for mixed precipitation. The latest round of federal COVID-19 relief is popular with the public, but Iowa U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst said Monday she believes Republicans will be able to sell their unanimous opposition to the package as a positive once the stimulus money has come and gone. The $1.9 trillion package includes, among other things, $1,400 stimulus payments to many Americans, an expansion of the child care tax credit in the form of payments to many American families, unemployment assistance, aid for state and local governments, funding for schools, food and housing assistance, and funding for vaccine production and testing. During a conference call with Iowa reporters, Ernst said she thinks Republicans will be able to campaign on their opposition to the relief package despite its popularity. She said the economic payments are good for those families who are in need, but said some are going to people who don't need them. Ernst also criticized the pandemic assistance that went to Democrat-governed states and suggested Democrats eventually will propose a tax increase to pay for the package. A former assistant with the Black Hawk and Bremer County Soil and Water Conservation District was sentenced Monday to more than two years in prison for embezzling over $430,000 and using the money for vacation cruises and other personal expenses. https://www.thegazette.com/subject/news/public-safety/former-iowa-state-employee-with-county-water-districts-convicted-for-embezzling-more-than-400000-20200313 (Leslie Carey, 44, of Waterloo,) who had worked as a state employee for the district since July 2007, pleaded in U.S. District Court last March to one count of wire fraud. A plea agreement showed she used the money for cruises, online shopping and home repairs. As an assistant, Carey was responsible for the district's receipts, disbursements, payroll, bank accounts and reporting, according to court documents. She would collect and post accounting records, make bank deposits, sign checks, prepare and distribute payroll and reconcile monthly banking statements. Iowa State announced Monday night that Coach Steve Prohm and athletics director Jamie Pollard have agreed to “part ways.” Prohm had mixed results in six seasons as Iowa State's head men's basketball coach, finishing with a 97-95 record. Then again, in major college sports, the most important thing is what you've done lately, and Iowa State just finished arguably its worst season ever, with a record of 2-22 overall and 0-19 in the Big 12. It was just the second time in school history the Cyclones failed to win a conference game, the only other year being 1937. Iowa State also had its longest losing streak ever this season, losing 18 games in a row. This briefing is sponsored in part by Corridor Careers. Matt Thomas grew up in Onalaska, Wisconsin where he made a name for himself as one of the best shooters in his recruiting class. Thomas had several Division I offers but had a connection to Cyclone basketball. His ability to shoot matched perfectly with Fred Hoiberg's system at Iowa State University. As a Cyclone, Matt Thomas was part of four straight Cyclone teams that won more than 20 games and ranked in the top 10 multiple times. Thomas played with some of the best Cyclones in recent history, including Monte Morris and Georges Niang. Thomas's time in Ames also included the head coach transition from Fred Hoiberg to Steve Prohm. During the 2015-2016 season, Prohm's first season at the helm, Thomas and the Cyclones had a tremendous season that ended with the heartbreaking Sweet Sixteen loss to Virginia in the United Center. Matt Thomas went undrafted after the 2016-2017 season and though he burned up the nets for the Lakers NBA summer league team, he started his professional career in Spain. Thomas continued his hot shooting for two different Spanish clubs. In fact, Thomas earned the nickname Mr. 99% for his deadly catch-and-shoot accuracy. Playing professionally helped him develop his all-around game at the highest level of basketball in Europe. Thomas spent two years in Spain proving his ability all over the court and earned the call from the Toronto Raptors to start the current NBA season. Thomas made his debut for the Raptors on the same court where he and the Cyclones lost to the Virginia Cavaliers in March 2016. After recovering from a broken finger, Thomas was starting to find his stride for the Raptors before the pandemic put the NBA season on hold and is poised to make a fast start when the NBA returns. www.moonlightgrahamshow.com

These podcasts during the fall months are meant to be heavy on football conversations. Steve Prohm didn’t get the memo. He left Levi and Austin no choice but to discuss the recent recruiting news. Three out of the last four weeks we’ve been able to welcome a new member to the 2018 Iowa State basketball recruiting class. This week it was George Conditt, a 6’10” center from Illinois. Prohm finally got the e-mails, tweets and messages from fans telling him to recruit tall guys! It worked! Just kidding, you weren’t the reason they reeled this one in so stop sending him notes you creeper. We discussed how big it would be for Prohm to finish off the 2018 class with Talen Horton-Tucker. National Championship or bust in our honest opinion. Finally, we shifted gears to our Iowa State Cyclones football team. What the hell happened Thursday night and were there any positives you should take from that game? We’ve predicted wins in every game to this point, did either of us have the cajones to call our shot against Oklahoma? Not so fast my friends. Don’t forget to join the WRNL Gamewatch Saturday morning at Es Tas. There will be beer and tacos. What more could you want? As always thanks for listening.

In preparation for the Iowa State/Vanderbilt tilt on Saturday we brought Adam Sparks from The Tennessean on the podcast to discuss the Commodores, Big 12/SEC Challenge and what to eat and drink in Nashville. We’ve all seen games at Vanderbilt on television and wondered why it looked so funny. Adam took the time to explain the “ground rules” , if you will, of the court and where we can expect Prohm to call his infamous time-outs from. Also, if you see first or second row tickets for sale you may want to pass on them unless you enjoy checking out sneakers. Vanderbilt has struggled to close out games with poor rebounding and stagnant offense. Sound familiar? Adam explains his thoughts on their close losses and how that plays into the game plan for Iowa State on Saturday. Live by the three and die by the three. If there has ever been a team that fits that motto, it might be this years Vanderbilt team. As the team has transitioned from a catch and shoot team to a dribble drive team under Bryce Drew they are still relying on three point baskets to put points on the board. According to Sparks the Commodores have scored more points from behind the three point line than inside of it. Bryce Drew would prefer to play man-to-man defense but has been forced to play zone at time for a variety of reasons. Adam says the reviews have been a mixed bag and it is a potential are that Iowa State may be able to expose. If you are going to Nashville, Adam has some food recommendations for you toward the end of the podcast. You won’t want to miss out on some Hattie B’s hot chicken according to Adam Sparks.

Wednesday’s game against Baylor was encouraging for a lot reasons. The final result though was a heartbreaking loss and a missed opportunity to stay atop the Big 12 conference standings and earn a marquee with for their resume. The four horsemen, Austin, Matt, Kevin and Matthias joined the podcast to discuss their thoughts on several key topics surround the Cyclones. Matt explained why he thought Deonte Burton was the MVP for Iowa State Wednesday night in Waco. Kevin discussed who he would have started (FROM THIS YEAR’S TEAM) after halftime against Baylor. Matthias explained why TCU is poised to end Kansas’ run of Big 12 Championships. Just kidding, but he did give his thoughts as to whether anyone would challenge the Jayhawks this year. Together we discussed the inability to put the ball in the hoop (which it turns out is a pretty big deal) for this team at the end of ball games. Do we need to fire Prohm or do the players need to sweat more and try harder? We went back to discuss Matt’s man crush and everyone else’s public enemy #1, Deonte Burton. We think he try more of those slam dunks and less of those missed layups. Kevin noticed some concerning trends in Monte Morris’ shooting numbers against quality opponents. Should his focus return to being more of a distributor? The crew took a look at Iowa State’s resume at this point in the year. How does is stack up and what do they need to do to improve it? Spoiler: they need to win more and lose less. We started the hype train on Cameron Lard as he is set to arrive on campus this weekend. Kevin was kind of buzzkill as he isn’t entirely convinced the kid is a real person. Where does Lard rank among fictitious recruits like Emmanuel Malou, Norvel Pelle and Ivan Chiriaev?

The podcast is finally back after a short hiatus and is even more average than ever! This episode features the site's 'B-' squad as Matt, Al and Sean join Tom to break down the first third of the Big 12 basketball season for the Cyclones. The crew also talks about the Big Monday win over the Oklahoma Sooners, the Ashton/Hallice lineup conundrum, the 3-3 start to conference play, and Prohm's team takeover. This is a no frills podcast where we strip all the production and just get right to the meat of things like the always entertaining twitter questions about radio personality flip cup partners, projected record for the next five games, and the best Ames drinking establishments which inevitably leads to some interesting story time with Uncle Al. Josh joins the conversation toward the end to discuss some football recruiting and the staff that never sleeps. You won't want to miss this week's episode where we compare the Rose Bowl to World War II, settle the best type of pasta debate and learn about the time Al got date raped. All in a week's work for the podcrew.
