In this week's episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Cami Smith, an incredible artist and community builder who shared her inspiring creative journey. We explored the importance of connecting with our creative selves and overcoming the limiting beliefs that hold us back. Cami spoke of her passion for building community, how her mother influenced her art, her creative evolution from fiber arts to painting, and we discussed how creativity gives us a sense of control, and acts like a rudder for our lives. We also reflected on the wisdom of Jane Dunnewald, and how her message of self-love and acceptance is the foundation for a good life. We talked about the importance of being curious and that the universe does not take away gifts but uses them to propel us forward. How does your creativity make you feel more in control? Listen to the full episode for insights and ideas on how to trust your creative intuition. In our latest episode, we had the privilege of diving deep into a conversation with Cami Smith, a truly inspiring artist, community builder, and all-around creative force. Cami's journey, from fiber art and quilting to her current passion for painting, is a testament to the power of embracing change and trusting your own unique path. We discussed how our creativity helps us to feel in control of our lives, and how those feelings can guide us through difficult moments. One of the most compelling themes of our conversation was the importance of community. Cami, who says that “community is my middle name,” has spent years actively building connections within the fiber art world, and now as a painter. For Cami community provides a way for artists from around the world to connect. She is also very active in the digital gaming community, supporting programmers and other introverted creatives through community events. As Kate pointed out, the importance of community is vital, even though she herself is an introvert. We also delved into the challenge of overcoming our inner critics. Those nagging voices that tell us we're not good enough or that we're not doing things right. Cami shared how her own evolution as an artist has helped her silence that voice, as has her work in the game industry, where she encourages others to find their space. She has learned how to identify and reframe her negative thoughts, a practice that has been transformative for her, and Kate shared her process of journaling and reframing her thoughts by understanding the feelings and actions they provoke.Cami's personal journey is also deeply rooted in the influence of her artist mother. Cami shared stories about her mother's artistic practice, her unique way of seeing the world and the challenges she faced as a female artist in her time. Cami's mother inspired her to be independent and this value became an important part of Cami's life as well. We explored the idea that sometimes our life's experiences, including loss and change, can be seen like peeling an onion. Each layer that comes off reveals more of who we are and the potential for growth, and every loss is another opportunity.Drawing on the wisdom of Jane Dunnewald, we discussed the notion that creativity makes us feel more in control. Jane's powerful message of self-acceptance and self-love resonated deeply, as it is the starting point for a fulfilling and authentic life. Jane's work emphasizes curiosity, clarity, confidence and community, and these pillars act as guideposts for us as we navigate our way.Cami and Kate also explored the idea of bridging the gap between the art world and large corporations. This led to a discussion about the ways that larger institutions can incorporate human touches into their practices, and how the art community can build relationships that support these changes. Cami noted that Amazon has supported some of her community events for people in the digital games industry.Cami shared a bit about her sketchbook practices, and how she uses them to record her ideas, her random thoughts and her colours. During the pandemic she led an online course based on maps, and she is currently creating a piece that weaves memories into her art. Finally, we closed out our discussion with a reflection on one of Jane's most important messages: that the universe doesn't just give you something only to take it away. We acknowledged the truth in that, that sometimes things may feel like they are being taken away, however, in hindsight, we can see that those “losses” are really just catalysts for something new. This conversation left us feeling empowered and inspired. We hope that you will take a moment to listen, embrace your creativity and connect with your community. The universe is always giving, even when it seems like it is taking away.

In this episode, Kat chats with sports commentator Harry Everett about his own mental health journey and the challenges men face in opening up about their struggles. Harry shares some personal stories, tips for getting through the winter blues, and how being real with others can make a huge difference. KEY TAKEAWAYS I used to hate this time of year when you'd go to work and come home in the dark. Now I do outdoorsy things like going for a run or a cycle during the day and I'll go to gym when it's dark. I'm lucky, being self-employed, that I can do that others might not be so lucky. But, if you're employed and can't run, cycle of exercise during the day, simply making sure you get outside on your lunch break can be enough to overcome seasonal affective disorder. In recent years I've not been very good in my own company, I get bored easily and have to ring people to talk to someone. Maybe I'm too extroverted or ADHD but feel like I need to be busy all the time or around people. I'd like to be more comfortable with just myself on my own and I've started testing myself when I'm away for work by going out to eat on my own, but it's a work in progress. My best mate, Max, killed himself when he was 19. I never got over it and always wanted to try to help and support him. At my wedding recently I didn't have a best man because Max was always supposed to be my best man, luckily I had some very understanding and supportive groomsmen! Instead we had a charity box set up for people to donate to MIND which was a positive way to honour him. If you give up an hour of your time to talk to someone, on a podcast for example, and show your vulnerability – it might make you feel uncomfortable, embarrassed or cringey, but that doesn't matter. You never know, your conversation could end up saving someone's life. BEST MOMENTS “During the Winter one of my friends has started to go to bed at 10pm and get up at 7pm to make the most of the daylight hours.”“There have been nights where I've woken up and taken myself to A&E because I've been considering doing what Max did. Probably because he did it is why I haven't done it because I've seen the pain it caused his family and friends.”“I want to raise awareness of mental health because it's an elephant in the room and a subject that people don't talk about enough.”“Anyone can do Movember for free, it costs nothing not to shave.” ABOUT THE GUEST Harry Everett is a freelance sports journalist, compere, host and coach who spends a lot of time commentating on Somerset cricket on their award-winning livestream and for BBC Sport on football and cricket amongst other more niche sports media roles such as Media Manager for Badminton England and work in pickleball too. He has also commentated on England Lions and Sri Lanka and South Africa's international sides and is regularly invited on other sports podcasts. He also tries to be a positive advocate for mental health and in getting young men speaking particularly too, you can donate to his Movember page here: X Instagram Do get in touch with him if wanted for speaking at any events ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life' price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit, and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. LinkedIn Instagram

This week I am delighted to welcome to The Joy of Cruising Podcast Iris MacBeath creator of the blog Life of Iris. Iris is a longtime staff member for Holland America Line, most recently as a Media Manager. I wrote the story of Life of Iris in the just-released The Joy of Cruising Again amzn.to/3lAfyON in a section called “Shiplife,” which followed the career of four past and present crew, staff, and officers from three different cruise lines. In the community that comprises onboard life, Iris is a dual member: first, not only is she a longtime crew member on various ships for HAL (before assuming her role as Media Manager, Iris worked in a series of youth activities positions.) Secondly, Iris is what is known in cruise ship parlance as a “traveling spouse,” or a “Spouse-On-Board,” which is the term used by her cruise line. Specifically, Iris' husband Stuart is a ship officer, and Iris has lived on the ship with him for over 400 days. Those distinct vantage points afford Iris a unique perspective of onboard life, and she chronicles that on her blog, Life of Iris. Life of Iris was conceived in early 2020 as a way for Iris to document her reflections as a Spouse-On-Board on the Grand World Voyage on which her husband Stuart, a 1st Engineering Officer was assigned. Iris time “I wanted to keep track of what we were up to; basically, because going around the world is pretty cool.” Iris did launch Life of Iris prior to boarding the World Cruise. However, little did Iris know that in the ensuing two years, her cruising career would be directly impacted by the two greatest global crises of the century.Support the show
