On 19 March, the Indian government slashed incentives for UPI transactions by more than half to Rs 1,500 crore for FY25. After it launched in 2016, UPI very quickly became the backbone of India's digital economy–thanks to demonetisation, and well, the pandemic. Most importantly, it was the radical decision to keep it free that fuelled its growth. No merchant fees. No transaction costs. But the zero-MDR policy came at a price because payment processors lost more than 2500 crore last year alone. And with the new budget cut, it will get worse. The system is clearly showing signs of strain. While UPI continues to post record volumes—18 billion transactions in March alone—many are asking an uncomfortable question:Can India maintain its digital payments miracle without letting the infrastructure collapse under its own weight?Tune in.Do you think people will stop using UPI if there is a small fee involved?Send your answers to us as texts or voice notes on Daybreak's WhatsApp at +918971108379. Is it time for investors to move beyond the valley when analyzing India?Dev Khare, Partner at Lightspeed agrees. He shares with us an interesting view on two funding models:The Silicon valley model begins with raising millions of dollars & going through huge negative cashflow for years. Hopefully building a great product or maybe even creating a new market. And a few years later, comes out with super fast growth & revenue potential of millions & billions of dollars.Whereas, in the Compounder model companies raise little to no funding in early days. They don't go to negative cash flow, instead growing slowly. Not at 3x ,but at 50% and keep at it for some 10 years building a large company. Thus becoming profitable in a few years following a slow J curve, and raising rounds only to accelerate growth.India has built exceptional companies in the software industry following this model. But, we can all sense that lack of approval for India's enterprise products, which we can confidently say has been achieved in the consumer markets. With 13+ years at Lightspeed, Dev has backed companies like PhysicsWallah, Razorpay, PocketFM, ShareChat, Darwinbox, Portkey.ai, Qure.ai, and Accel Data. Prior to VC, Dev started as a product manager then founded his company Covigo, a developer platform for mobile applications. This episode promises an interesting discussion on building companies in enterprise.0:00- Trailer1:12 - Early days at Lightspeed India8:11 - Learning curve of an Investor11:52 - How OYO fixed supply when Airbnb didn't16:37 - Is organic acquisition now the norm?19:02 - India must rediscover its AI edge20:20 - Compounder v/s silicon valley companies23:26 - Why Freshworks & Zoho chose mature markets?27:40 - Can India create SAAS category leaders?29:18 - Enterprise startups cap at 30%33:07 - How a $3.2B company found its niche37:42 - AI services & AI led services40:37 - Lightspeed's Investment thesis45:34 - Why we have 70% second-time founders?48:18 - Will ITC & Jio acquisitions set a trend?52:37 - Are software IPOs sparse?55:34 - India's enterprise buyer market is small1:04:47 - Missed investments & Lessons1:06:28 - Why is India having a lag effect in AI?1:10:19 - Has India built global enterprise products?-------------Hi, I am your host Siddhartha! Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has announced that flight testing for India's ‘Loyal Wingman' drone will begin by 2024. Part of HAL's Combat Air Teaming System, this indigenous drone will accompany manned IAF fighter jets, offering a new dimension in air combat by working alongside or behind fighters to protect and support them. It can be launched from aircraft like the C-130 or Su-30 MKI and controlled via a secure data link. The CATS Warrior first unveiled in 2021, is a twin-engined unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) designed for aerial and ground attacks. HAL has teamed up with private sector players to develop this cutting-edge technology. But what exactly is a ‘loyal wingman' drone? And how does it revolutionise the concept of Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) in modern warfare? In other news, France started developing an air-combat drone that will serve as an unmanned wingman for the country's Rafale fighter. This is part of a contract with Dassault Aviation to start work on an upgrade package for the aircraft. Countries like the U.S., Australia, Russia, and China are also racing to perfect this tech, which could shift pilots from direct combat roles to more strategic oversight as UAVs handle dangerous missions. Can India make its mark in this high-tech space? In this episode, Dev Goswami and defence expert Shiv Aroor delve into the global race for ‘loyal wingman' drones. They explore the progress made by nations like France, which has just launched its wingman project for Rafale fighters, and discuss how the integration of unmanned systems like Boeing's MQ-28 Ghost Bat could redefine future air combat. Sunil Gavaskar dropped a bombshell when he wrote a column for Sportstar, hitting out at those who credited Gautam Gambhir for India's Kanpur Test win against Bangladesh. Gavaskar said the sole credit for India's aggressive approach should have gone to Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Test team. He said he felt people indulging in ‘foot-licking' by crediting the newly-appointed coach. It seems the legendary Gavaskar missed the mark on this occasion. While he stated the obvious by praising Rohit Sharma for India's fearless approach, his swipe at the head coach's supporters left a bad taste. Meanwhile, India women's cricket has been facing criticism for its slow start to the women's T20 World Cup. Some critics have accused the women's cricket team of not asking the right questions. This week, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited announced a significant development: the Defence Ministry has issued a Request for Proposal for 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs) as part of the government's push to boost defence indigenisation. Of these, 90 will be allocated to the Indian Army and 66 to the Indian Air Force (IAF). Currently, 15 Prachands are in service with the IAF and 5 with the Indian Army. The LCH was formally named Prachand in October 2022.What Makes the Prachand Special? The Prachand, a marvel of modern engineering, is the world's only attack helicopter capable of landing and taking off at 5,000 meters (16,400 ft). This unique feature makes it ideal for high-altitude operations in challenging areas like the Siachen glacier and eastern Ladakh. Equipped with a range of air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles, it can neutralise enemy air defence operations. In this episode, host Dev Goswami and defence expert Shiv Aroor explore the significance of light combat helicopters, the history of the Prachand's development, and how it compares with the Boeing Apache, of which the IAF operates 22 and the Army 6.The duo explores these key questions: Why do the Air Force and Army have separate combat helicopter divisions? Will the new acquisition reduce India's reliance on Western or foreign equipment? Can India achieve greater self-sufficiency in defence capabilities with these additions?Tune in to find out!Produced by Anna PriyadarshiniSound mix by Sachin Dwivedi

Battle of Ideas festival 2023, Sunday 29 October, Church House, London ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION In August, India made world news by being the first nation to land near the Moon's South Pole. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described it as a historic moment for humanity and ‘the dawn of the new India'. Meanwhile, India's digital transformation of its financial system is reported by payments systems company ACI Worldwide to be operating on a larger scale than even in the US and China. Earlier this year, UN population estimates suggested India has overtaken China as the world's most populous country, with over 1.4 billion people. As America's rivalry with China heats up, the western world has warmed to India. A month before the Moon landing, President Joe Biden had rolled out the red carpet for Modi's state visit to America. The US wants a more meaningful, closer and stronger relationship with India. The German government is discussing a possible submarine deal. French President Emmanuel Macron invited Modi to celebrate Bastille Day, calling India a strategic partner and friend. But there have also been tensions over India's neutral stance over the war in Ukraine. Are these signs of India's arrival on the international top table? Can India rise to this challenge? India has a huge population, but the vast majority are still poor – the country is ranked 139th in the world for nominal GDP per capita – and faces massive inequalities. While India receives much adulation from the Western elites, its undermining of the freedom of the press and its clampdown on the judiciary have been heavily criticised. The Economist Intelligence Unit‘s Democracy Index showed India falling from 27th position in 2014 to 46th in 2022. But the White House is calling India a ‘vibrant democracy'. Which is it: a faltering democracy or a vibrant one? India is also facing much internal disquiet within its population. Most recently, ethnic tensions have flared up between the majority Hindus and the Muslim minority just 20 miles outside of New Delhi. Ethnic strife between Hindus and Christians also continues especially in the North-east state of Manipur. With this backdrop of domestic instability, can Modi and his BJP party retain control in the 2024 elections? What will India's future role be on the world stage – both politically and economically?
