Ben and Carlos chat about college conference tournaments and briefly get into the dreadful track record of first round first basemen in recent years. Will that impact how teams view players like Nick Kurtz and Jac Caglianone? The two talk about the SEC's decision to roll out and experiment with a new double first base bag at the SEC tournament and then get into more serious business of prospect promotions. There are a number of intriguing players moving up the minor league ladder including: Red Sox RHP Luis Perales, D-backs 1B Deyvison De Los Santos, Guardians LHP Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson, Cardinals LHP Quinn Mathews, White Sox LHP Noah Schultz, White Sox SS Jacob Gonzalez and Mets RHP/OF Nolan McLean. After that Ben points out a few prospects who he thinks should be getting more hype than they are currently receiving—one an outfielder with the Orioles and the other a Guardians middle infield prospect. At the close of the show Carlos asks Ben if he'd rather have Bobby Witt Jr. or Gunnar Henderson moving forward and the two briefly talk about the value of switch hitting and whether or not hitters should simply focus on their best sides.– Time Stamps(0:00) College conference tournaments(5:00) The scary first round 1B track record(10:00) Two bags at first base?(16:45) Luis Perales(22:00) Deyvison De Los Santos(29:00) Matt Wilkinson(35:00) Quinn Mathews(42:30) Noah Schultz(51:00) Jacob Gonzalez(58:00) Nolan McLean(1:02:00) Reggie Crawford(1:06:20) Dylan Beavers (1:11:00) Angel Genao(1:15:00) Bobby Witt Jr. vs. Gunnar Henderson(1:23:00) Switch hitting questions–Do you have a question you want us to answer? For today's episode, Richmond Flying Squirrels broadcaster Trey Wilson sat down with left-handed pitcher Reggie Crawford. They talked about his promotion to Triple-A this week, his time in Richmond, growing up in Pennsylvania, heading to UConn, playing for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and more.
For this week's podcast, I have a trio of interviews from the Diamond in Richmond (excuse the standard stadium noisiness!), all involving pitchers whose baseball paths have involved twists and turns.First, I spoke with Reggie Crawford, the Giants' top pick in the 2022 draft, who has just recently joined the Richmond pitching staff as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. Crawford is, for the first time in his career, developing as a pitcher only, after being a two-way player at UConn and previously in his pro career. We talk about his time as a hitter in the AFL and the decision to focus on pitching, his health history, the path forward and much more. Next I spoke with 2021 4th round pick, Eric Silva, who is negotiating a change from starter to reliever in his third full season. Eric talks about the relationship he's built with fellow pitcher Jose Cruz, the value of being bilingual, and the improvements he's made to the mental side of his craft. Finally, Tanner Kiest discusses his long career in Independent leagues as he worked on his craft and worked his way back to affiliate ball. A decade after he was originally drafted by the Phillies in 2014, Kiest has made it to Double-A, where he's doing quite well in the Squirrels' bullpen, sporting an 0.82 ERA over his first seven games. There R Giants is a reader-supported publication. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit rogermunter.substack.comEverything about Reggie Crawford is immense. He's a huge guy, with huge stuff and enormous talent. But he's also a person with real star-wattage in his personality. He's thoughtful, articulate, and incisive in the way he views his pursuit of greatness. And there's no better way to bring that aspect of Crawford across than with another “In the Dugout” vi…

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
First Keaton Winn and now Tristan Beck. The San Francisco Giants' remarkably inexperienced projected starting rotation outside of Logan Webb has taken two hits recently, with Winn dealing with an elbow injury (that has progressed well) and now Tristan Beck being diagnosed with a scary upper arm aneurysm. We at Locked On wish a speedy and full recovery for Beck, who stands to miss significant time with this complicated health matter. The SF Giants love their young pitching that goes beyond Tristan Beck and Keaton Winn. There's Mason Black. Carson Whisenhunt. Landen Roupp. Reggie Crawford. And others. However, it would be foolish to go into the season with such a reliance on unproven pitching. The Giant should sign Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery. It makes too much sense, and there is too much riding on this season. The SF Giants cannot afford to miss the playoffs for the seventh time in eight years.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants got a huge boost when Casey Schmitt and Patrick Bailey were promoted to the majors and made an immediate impact. Is SF Giants outfield prospect Luis Matos next in line? Matos is tearing it up in Triple-A, but it's hard to see how he would find consistent playing time in the Giants' major league outfield considering the fact that the SF Giants have Michael Conforto, Mitch Haniger, Mike Yastrzemski, and Austin Slater locked into roles. Carson Whisenhunt and Reggie Crawford are also discussed in this segment. What has been the influence of new Giants GM Pete Putila? Is he behind the Minor League success and aggressive promotions that we didn't see for years under Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harris? Not necessarily. A lot of this has been a function of the fact that players the Giants believe in have performed well and earned promotions. A lot of those players simply weren't ready in previous years, but are more ready now. But Putila likely has had some significant impact on the process. Some San Francisco Giants rapid fire questions are also answered: Will Gabe Kapler ever get rid of the platoon system? If you had to buy a jersey, whose jersey would you get? Do the Giants have a legit first baseman of the future in the system? Have we seen enough from Brett Wisely? Assuming he stays healthy and continues to hit well, should the Giants consider re-signing Conforto? Who are the three likeliest Giants All-Stars on the roster? What's the expected record at the end of the year with the Giants' hot May? Do you envision the Giants being buyers or sellers in the deadline?Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

And I've happy to be joined this week by Eli Walsh who led Baseball Prospectus' coverage of for BPro's 2023 Giants' rankings.Eli and I talk about whether Marco Luciano or Kyle Harrison is the more “untouchable” prospect. How Luis Matos and Grant McCray compare to each other? Who's breaking out of the 2021 draft of pitchers? And what the heck we can make of 2022 1st rounder Reggie Crawford? Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Mike Yastrzemski's walk-off grand slam against Josh Hader was arguably the San Francisco Giants' best moment of the first half. The Giants scored six runs in the 9th against Hader, the most runs the lefty closer has ever allowed in an outing. The SF Giants looked dead in the water up until that magical 9th inning. It was looking like another demoralizing loss fueled by sloppy defense, but then everything changed. And the Giants went on to win the next two games to ultimately win three of four from a playoff-caliber Brewers squad. The trade deadline is just over two weeks away, and we just learned over the weekend that Juan Soto is available and could be dealt. This news sent shockwaves through the industry, since Soto is a generational hitting talent and the Nationals' GM said not long ago that Soto would not be dealt this year. But things have reportedly changed, after Soto turned down the Nats' 15-year, $440 million offer. They're a bad team, and they have to get something for Soto if they're not going to be able to extend him. However, he's still under club control for 2.5 more years, so he's not necessarily going to get traded this summer. Washington could wait until the offseason or even next year's deadline to deal Soto. Regardless, the Giants should and will be among the teams to express interest. But even a package of Marco Luciano, Kyle Harrison, and Luis Matos may not be enough. Taking on some or all of Patrick Corbin's underwater deal could be the Giants' best shot since it would lessen the return, but that is not necessarily in the Nats' best interest. The Giants drafted Reggie Crawford with the 30th overall pick in last night's MLB Draft. They announced him as a two-way player: he's a lefty arm who can touch triple digits, and he was an above-average power bat for UConn. With their second round selection, the SF Giants took another left-handed pitcher, Carson Whisenhunt.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
