Ben and Carlos talk about Jac Caglianone's return to the mound in the 2025 season and how they view him as a two-way player moving forward, as well as why people should stop referencing Shohei Ohtani as a comp for him—or any other player. After that the two continue their organizational overview series with the National League West, starting with a pair of strong farm systems with the Dodgers and Rockies, and then with a trio of more questionable groups with the Padres, D-Backs and Giants. The two open up the listener mailbag at the end of the show with question that include: sleeper bats in the 2025 draft class, international signing tax implications, potential issues with international players coming to the states and how the nitty gritty of international signings happens. —Time Stamps(0:01) Opening Banter(5:00) Jac Caglianone(14:00) NL West Overviews(14:30) Dodgers(17:30) Dalton Rushing(22:00) Zyhir Hope(28:00) Eduardo Quintero(30:00) Kellon Lindsey(32:00) Rockies(34:00) Chase Dollander(36:00) Charlie Condon(41:20) Adael Amador(43:00) Zac Veen & Robert Calaz(47:30) Padres(49:00) Don't jump ship on Ethan Salas(52:00) Ethan Salas vs. Leo De Vries(55:00) Deeper Padres names(1:02:00) D-backs(1:05:30) Slade Caldwell(1:08:00) Adrian Del Castillo(1:12:00) Druw Jones(1:15:15) Giants(1:18:00) Dakota Jordan(1:21:00) Solid international moves for San Francisco(1:23:00) Carson Whisenhunt(1:25:00) Listener MailbagDo you have a question you want us to answer? First Keaton Winn and now Tristan Beck. The San Francisco Giants' remarkably inexperienced projected starting rotation outside of Logan Webb has taken two hits recently, with Winn dealing with an elbow injury (that has progressed well) and now Tristan Beck being diagnosed with a scary upper arm aneurysm. We at Locked On wish a speedy and full recovery for Beck, who stands to miss significant time with this complicated health matter. The SF Giants love their young pitching that goes beyond Tristan Beck and Keaton Winn. There's Mason Black. Carson Whisenhunt. Landen Roupp. Reggie Crawford. And others. However, it would be foolish to go into the season with such a reliance on unproven pitching. The Giant should sign Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery. It makes too much sense, and there is too much riding on this season. The SF Giants cannot afford to miss the playoffs for the seventh time in eight years.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

If the San Francisco Giants had the chance, should they trade Keaton Winn straight up for Willy Adames? They absolutely should, even though Winn has a bright and exciting future. Adames fits the SF Giants extremely well, and the Giants have a surplus of young pitching. It might take more than that to land Adames, but he's a player the Giants should definitely be targeting.Among the other questions asked and answered on today's mailbag edition of the Locked On Giants podcast:Why are so many people asking for Adames instead of FINALLY seeing what we have in Marco Luciano?Thoughts on Joc Pederson liking that post about the city? Now that Joc's gone who has the most swagger on the team? What are a few examples of ways the front office has integrated differing viewpoints into their decision-making processes, compared to last season? Are you proud of the Giants organization? Corbin Burnes being traded from the Brewers to the Orioles has implications for the San Francisco Giants. Milwaukee has signaled its intent to re-tool, trading away a Cy Young-caliber pitcher because he was entering the last year of his contract. Enter the SF Giants, who could use another Brewers player on an expiring deal: shortstop Willy Adames. There are numerous reasons why Adames makes sense for the Giants. First of all, going into the season with just Marco Luciano penciled in as their starting shortstop is too risky. Adames is a plus-plus defender, is 28 years old, and is an above-average hitter. Acquiring him would be a big swing for the Giants, and it would allow them to move Luciano into a competition for the third base position, which currently consists of J.D. Davis, Casey Schmitt, Wilmer Flores, and perhaps David Villar. Davis is the frontrunner to play there, except it would make more sense for him to play DH given the current roster construction, especially if they acquired someone on the left side of the infield. So the big question is: what would it take to acquire Adames? The cost for Burnes wasn't that high, simply because he is a short-term rental. And as good as Adames is, he has less value than Burnes. So the SF Giants would probably have to give up a mid Top-100 prospect type (Carson Whisenhunt?) and perhaps a bit more. Arms like Tristan Beck and Keaton Winn could also be of interest to Milwaukee. The cost won't be prohibitive, Adames would make the team better, he is a high energy player, and a trade would make a lot of sense.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Patrick Bailey and Jung Hoo Lee were kind of robbed by the system. Bailey, who burst onto the scene in 2023 with his defensive excellence at the most important position on the field, was never a Top 100 prospect darling. Lee, who's coming over from Korea, is only 25 years old, and would certainly crack a top prospects list if eligible, was not included on MLB Pipeline's list this year because they decided to stop including international signings. However, that didn't stop the SF Giants from having four representatives on MLB Top 100 list. There were the usual suspects, Kyle Harrison and Marco Luciano, leading the way. Both players reached the major leagues in 2023 and figure to have a real shot at further development this upcoming season. Harrison has ace potential and Luciano could have 30+ home run power. Two newcomers joined the list for the Giants. Carson Whisenhunt, a left-handed pitcher, was ranked for the first time. Bryce Eldridge, the San Francisco Giants' first-round selection in the 2023 draft, also cracked MLB Pipeline's Top 100 list. What an absolute dud. And we're not just talking about the San Francisco Giants' trade deadline, in which their only move was acquiring A.J. Pollock, who's having a very disappointing season. The MLB trade deadline as a whole was very underwhelming, with only a few big-name or high-impact players getting dealt. Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander headlined the list of players moves, but neither deal's structure would have made sense for the SF Giants, as will be explained later. The Giants' addition of Pollock is puzzling on the surface, but starts to make more sense upon a deeper dive. Despite being 35 years old, Pollock's sprint speed is still 89th percentile. He has a really good throwing arm. He has a track record of not striking out and doing damage against lefties, while also holding his own against right-handed pitching. With SF Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski landing on the IL again, and Mitch Haniger out at least two more weeks, Pollock should be a mainstay in the lineup as he gets a chance to regain his form. He's just two seasons removed from being an impact hitter. The Giants also received utility player Mark Mathias in the trade in which they will send a player to be named later or cash back to the Mariners.None of the trades that happened at this deadline stood out as great fits for the Giants. The Mets paid down the majority of the hefty salaries owed to Verlander and Scherzer in order to land top-100 prospect talents in return. The Giants should not be giving up players like that—think Marco Luciano, Luis Matos, Patrick Bailey, Kyle Harrison, Carson Whisenhunt—for pitchers around 40 years old who are past their primes. Otherwise, there wasn't much high-end talent traded, nor even any nice complementary pieces (like Tommy Edman) who would've fit the Giants.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

San Francisco Giants fans have been waiting a long time for a youth movement, and they're finally getting it this year. Giants fans have already seen Patrick Bailey, Luis Matos, Casey Schmitt, and others arrive on the shores of McCovey Cove, and they might not have to wait much longer for another top prospect to arrive. Marco Luciano was promoted to Triple-A, meaning he's right on the doorstep of the major leagues. In Sacramento, Luciano will join another top prospect in left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, who's currently out with a moderate hamstring strain. It's become realistic that both Harrison and Luciano will make their MLB debuts in 2023.Meanwhile, the Giants find themselves in a competitive race in the NL West and in the Wild Card standings. The SF Giants' first game against the Reds was suspended due to rain, and will resume this afternoon with runners on second and third with one out with J.D. Davis at the plate in a 2-2 game. It's a huge situation for Davis, who will likely have to face Reds closer Alexis Diaz. After Game 1 is concluded, the Giants will have a big opportunity with Luke Weaver, who has an ERA of 7.00 in 15 starts, going in Game 2 for Cincinnati. In other news, Jim Bowden of The Athletic made an absurd hypothetical trade proposal involving the Giants and Angels for Shohei Ohtani. In the proposal, the Giants would get Ohtani in exchange for Luis Matos, Kyle Harrison, Marco Luciano, Grant McCray, and Carson Whisenhunt. There's just zero chance that the SF Giants would give up that much talent for about 60 games of Ohtani. That's a similar package to what the Padres gave up for nearly 400 games of Juan Soto.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants entered the season with so many starting pitchers that it wasn't clear how they'd fit them all. At the season's halfway point, however, the Giants really only have two starting pitchers they could truly rely upon. Logan Webb and Alex Cobb put together All-Star-worthy first halves (even though Webb was snubbed from the All-Star game ... again). But newcomers Sean Manaea and Ross Stripling struggled mightily out of the gates, and Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood were inconsistent. The SF Giants' "bullpen" was extremely non-traditional. Camilo Doval was ultra reliable at the back end, and Tyler and Taylor Rogers also provided strong performances in a traditional role, but pretty much everyone else was either inconsistent, injured, or unorthodox. Manaea improved mightily when used out of the 'pen, and is making a strong case to move back into the starting rotation. Tristan Beck was strong in a bulk innings role. Scott Alexander, John Brebbia, and Luke Jackson were good when healthy.Projecting forward, it's anyone's guess as to how things will play out for the Giants. We know Webb and Cobb will anchor the rotation as long as they're healthy, but it's unclear who exactly will claim the remaining spots or whether the SF Giants will continue to rely heavily on bullpen games, which was largely a successful strategy in the first half. It's also worth keeping an eye on young players like Keaton Winn, Kyle Harrison, Carson Whisenhunt, and Mason Black to see if they get an opportunity and make an impact for the Giants in the second half—and hopefully in the playoffs.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

This is going to be a fun one! My guests this week are Giants' LHP prospect Carson Whisenhunt and Richmond Hitting Coach Cory Elasik. I caught up with Whisenhunt the morning after his Double A debut with Richmond to talk about rapid promotions and the history and evolution of his plus plus changeup. Cory Elasik was the hitting coach for Eugene in 2022, before moving to Richmond for 2023, which gives him a great perspective to talk about the developments that have led players like Patrick Bailey, Luis Matos, and Casey Schmitt from A ball to the majors in such head-spinning fashion. Elasik also gives me a little lesson in how exactly to watch a batting practice session. There R Giants is completely supported by readers and listeners like you. Platoon deniers look away. The San Francisco Giants beat the Rockies in dramatic comeback fashion thanks in large part to their platoon system and ability to get favorable matchups in key situations. In the seventh inning, after Michael Conforto walked and Mitch Haniger singled, the Rockies had a choice to make. Let a righty face Mike Yastrzemski and Blake Sabol, or go to a lefty and force the SF Giants to make countermoves. They went to a lefty, and Austin Slater and Wilmer Flores came through with huge hits as pinch hitters, fueling the Giants' 5-4 comeback win.Another key factor in the win was the San Francisco Giants' bullpen. Over the last 30 days, no bullpen has a better ERA than the Giants' bullpen. Pretty much everyone in the 'pen, including players who were heavily criticized for their early season struggles (such as Sean Manaea and Taylor Rogers) has been outstanding over the last month. The Giants' bullpen was key in the win last night, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings after Logan Webb allowed four runs in 5.1 innings.Carson Whisenhunt, who was drafted less than 11 months ago, made his Double-A debut last night and continued to dominate. He's made a meteoric rise through the SF Giants' system and his first start in Richmond was more of the same. Luis Matos, another extremely intriguing prospect who's the youngest player in Triple-A, homered last night to continue to make his case that he belongs in the majors—soon.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants got a huge boost when Casey Schmitt and Patrick Bailey were promoted to the majors and made an immediate impact. Is SF Giants outfield prospect Luis Matos next in line? Matos is tearing it up in Triple-A, but it's hard to see how he would find consistent playing time in the Giants' major league outfield considering the fact that the SF Giants have Michael Conforto, Mitch Haniger, Mike Yastrzemski, and Austin Slater locked into roles. Carson Whisenhunt and Reggie Crawford are also discussed in this segment. What has been the influence of new Giants GM Pete Putila? Is he behind the Minor League success and aggressive promotions that we didn't see for years under Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harris? Not necessarily. A lot of this has been a function of the fact that players the Giants believe in have performed well and earned promotions. A lot of those players simply weren't ready in previous years, but are more ready now. But Putila likely has had some significant impact on the process. Some San Francisco Giants rapid fire questions are also answered: Will Gabe Kapler ever get rid of the platoon system? If you had to buy a jersey, whose jersey would you get? Do the Giants have a legit first baseman of the future in the system? Have we seen enough from Brett Wisely? Assuming he stays healthy and continues to hit well, should the Giants consider re-signing Conforto? Who are the three likeliest Giants All-Stars on the roster? What's the expected record at the end of the year with the Giants' hot May? The San Francisco Giants could soon be looking at a scenario in which they have too many starting pitchers and for too few spots. With Logan Webb, Alex Cobb, Anthony DeSclafani set in stone, and Alex Wood, Sean Manaea, Ross Stripling, and Jakob Junis also in the mix, will the SF Giants need to trade a starter if Kyle Harrison (or someone else, like perhaps Keaton Winn) comes up and establishes himself? Not to mention Tristan Beck, who's done a nice job for the Giants in his rookie season but was recently demoted to the Minors.Carson Whisenhunt is another starting pitchers SF Giants fans have their eyes on. Whienhunt was the San Francisco Giants' second-round draft pick in 2022, and he's had a remarkable beginning to his 2023 professional campaign. He started out in Low-A San Jose, where he dominated. Whisenhunt earned a quick promotion to High-A, where he's continued to dominate. It's not out of the question that he could quickly be promoted to Double-A Richmond, and that might put him on a potential fast track to the major leagues. If Whisenhunt is promoted to Double-A, he'd join Marco Luciano, who's there for the first time this season. Coming off a back injury and being at a new level at a young age, Luciano initially struggles for the Flying Squirrels, but he's turned things around in the last couple of weeks. His strikeout rate is under control, he's hitting for power, and he's commanding the strike zone. If all goes right, Luciano could be an option for the San Francisco Giants late in 2023, otherwise the likely timeline would be the first half of 2024.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Mike Yastrzemski's walk-off grand slam against Josh Hader was arguably the San Francisco Giants' best moment of the first half. The Giants scored six runs in the 9th against Hader, the most runs the lefty closer has ever allowed in an outing. The SF Giants looked dead in the water up until that magical 9th inning. It was looking like another demoralizing loss fueled by sloppy defense, but then everything changed. And the Giants went on to win the next two games to ultimately win three of four from a playoff-caliber Brewers squad. The trade deadline is just over two weeks away, and we just learned over the weekend that Juan Soto is available and could be dealt. This news sent shockwaves through the industry, since Soto is a generational hitting talent and the Nationals' GM said not long ago that Soto would not be dealt this year. But things have reportedly changed, after Soto turned down the Nats' 15-year, $440 million offer. They're a bad team, and they have to get something for Soto if they're not going to be able to extend him. However, he's still under club control for 2.5 more years, so he's not necessarily going to get traded this summer. Washington could wait until the offseason or even next year's deadline to deal Soto. Regardless, the Giants should and will be among the teams to express interest. But even a package of Marco Luciano, Kyle Harrison, and Luis Matos may not be enough. Taking on some or all of Patrick Corbin's underwater deal could be the Giants' best shot since it would lessen the return, but that is not necessarily in the Nats' best interest. The Giants drafted Reggie Crawford with the 30th overall pick in last night's MLB Draft. They announced him as a two-way player: he's a lefty arm who can touch triple digits, and he was an above-average power bat for UConn. With their second round selection, the SF Giants took another left-handed pitcher, Carson Whisenhunt.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

On today's episode of the show, we're looking at some recent mocks from Baseball America and MLB.com to figure out what we do and don't know about this draft class. We know Druw Jones is the favorite to go #1 to the Baltimore Orioles, but what do the Colorado Rockies do at #8 if the first tier of players are all gone? The consensus seems to be a run on college outfielders late in the firs round - who is in that group? And of course, we still have questions about what the Kansas City Royals will do at 9, where Kumar Rocker and Carson Whisenhunt will go, and will we set a record by not having a pitcher taken in the first ten picks for time first time ever?Find and follow LockedOn MLB Prospects on your favorite podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-mlb-prospects/id1525225214Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2wzJIf26tGgVbB7rsoKyLDStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-mlb-prospectsFollow along with LockedOn MLB Prospects host Lindsay Crosby as we follow 120+ affiliated teams throughout the 2022 season! On today's show, we're going over some of the news and notes about next month's MLB Draft. First, we've had the first significant prep pitcher opt out to head to college, RHP Andrew Dutkanych, who is heading to Vanderbilt. There's more coming, but it raises a good question: Now that college players can receive NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) money, how does that affect the draft decisions of high school seniors and draft-eligible college guys? Next, we update the independent ball progress of pitchers that didn't get to pitch in college this year, Kumar Rocker (Frontier League) and Carson Whisenhunt (Cape Cod League). Finally, we look at some of the guys that gained some helium at the College World Series and if it's enough to push them back onto draft boards.Find and follow LockedOn MLB Prospects on your favorite podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-mlb-prospects/id1525225214Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2wzJIf26tGgVbB7rsoKyLDStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-mlb-prospectsFollow along with LockedOn MLB Prospects host Lindsay Crosby as we follow 120+ affiliated teams throughout the 2022 season! The Guardians sent out a press release with their newest additions. I am not sure if people were excited by the additions of Ian Gibaut and Jake Jewell but we talk about the pair of arms. Jewell is more famous, but I am more interested in Gibaut. I talk about the players who are off the market since we last talked and what players still make the most sense as potential trade targets.  I explain why Trevor Story, Nick Castellanos, and Michael Conforto would be long shots even if the Guardians had the money to spend. We then talk about the released information about the Guardians competitive balance pick which is slotted to be the 35th pick in the draft. We talk about how the draft is disappointing right now and bring up another pitcher in Carson Whisenhunt who is done for the year.  MLB.com released their top 100 prospects list. There are five Guardians listed: George Valera, Gabriel Arias, Bryan Rocchio, Tyler Freeman, and Daniel Espino. We also discuss Baseball America which released their Guardians list and is the only source that still has Tyler Freeman as their top prospect.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
