Today, it's time to talk to Rick Kennedy, the Democratic representative for Texas' 17th Congressional District. It's unusual to meet a politician that's as open as Rick is, and he left me feeling like I'd just had a chat with one of my buddies.  He is a self-described optimist, even though he's campaigning in a Republican area and against an opponent with considerably more funding.   He doesn't have any big corporations to answer to, and instead gets all his campaign funding from regular citizens. And this is what Rick prides himself on.  He describes the Republicans as too fixated on short-term solutions and pleasing their donors. Instead, he wants to shift the focus to health, security and prosperity.  After interviewing Pete Sessions in the last episode, it's nice to hear the other possibilities, and being a Democrat I have to say it seems like a closer option to me... “Nobody owns me, all of my contributions come from individual people, and if you want to know who you're representative in Washington is going to work for, look where the money's coming from.” - Rick Kennedy  Time Stamps: 01:27 - Who Rick Kennedy is and how our conversation went. 07:01 - Why he decided to move to Texas and what he thinks of the state. 13:00 - Rick's thoughts on the most recent Presidential debate. 17:05 - The rigged nature of American politics and the problems with private campaign funding. 23:11 - Rick's position against the status quo. 27:21 - Why he got involved in politics. 30:10 - What it was like when he first ran for the Congress. 35:40 - How to inspire trust in voters and the problems with using short-term fixes without considering the long-term costs. 40:14 - Rick's position on America's healthcare system and policies. 52:39 - The chances there are of Texas turning blue. 56:01 - How the pandemic has affected Rick and the ways he's had to adapt his campaign because of it. 1:01:57 - The most important things for voters to know about Rick Kennedy.  Resources:  Texas Real Food Connect with Rick Kennedy: Website Twitter Facebook Connect with Patrick Scott Armstrong: Instagram Facebook Email

For years, Pavel taught music at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, where he continues to be a leader in the community as Executive Director of the Richmond’s Amigos Latino Center. In this episode, Pavel talks about his experience immigrating to the Midwest, his passion for Latin jazz, and the power of music as a bridge across cultures. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

After another hiatus (the last one of the summer–promise!) we return to conclude our conversation with Rick Kennedy on Cotton Mather. His father, Increase Mather (yes, that was his first name; no, we didn't ask why, and if we ever knew, we forgot), died just five years before Cotton did. So for almost his entire life, Cotton was his father's associate pastor. While Increase was writing sermons, and theology, and  butting into politics, and sailing off to London, Cotton was walking around the North End of Boston visiting the sick, the dying, and all the other "pastoral" things that his father didn't do. So this week we talk about Cotton the Pastor, and Cotton the Bostonian; as well as Cotton the Harvard Man. Enjoy.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Hello! Historically Thinking today returns from a summer break (or, to be precise, Al Zambone does). Recording far from the Augustana College campus and the studio of WAUG, in a pirate-radio bootleg setup of sorts, we bring you a thrill-ride of a summer blockbuster devoted to...a colonial New England theologian you've never heard of. Probably ever. Unless you're weird. Or over-educated. Cotton Mather (1663-1728) was a Boston preacher who was the son of a Boston preacher and the grandson of a Boston preacher. He lived all of his life pretty much in Boston's North End. Yet that life was lived amongst momentous cultural, political, and religious transitions, many of which Mather pushed along for all he was worth in innumerable sermons and writings. (Cotton Mather, you see, had very few unwritten thoughts.) This week we have a conversation with Rick Kennedy, Professor of History at Point Loma Nazarene College, and author of the recently published The First American Evangelical: A Short Life of Cotton Mather.  This conversation is focused on the big events of Mather's life, most of which (like the Halfway Covenant and the Smallpox inoculation controversy) normal haven't heard of, and one of which (the Salem Witch Trials) they certainly have. Next week we'll be talking about the difference between Puritanism and Evangelicalism, and how Cotton Mather was or was not a part of the Enlightenment. See you then!
