Following a decorated career in the VFL, Rodney Eade would make the transition to the coaches box with relative ease. Stints as an assistant coach at Brisbane and North Melbourne would be followed by the senior coaching job at the Sydney Swans in 1996. In his first year at Sydney Eade was able to transform the Swans into a premiership threat, with his side playing off in the '96 Grand Final. After 152 games at the helm of the Swans, Eade's time in the harbour city came to an end as the axe came swinging his way. With the Western Bulldog searching for a coach at the end of 2004, Eade would find his way to the Whitten Oval where he would lead a talented side to three consecutive preliminary finals. In late 2014, Eade was appointed coach of the AFL's expansion team on the Gold Coast taking over from Guy McKenna. Eade's time at the Suns was stormy at best and by the end of his third season, his contract would not be renewed. In this episode Eade opens up about his sackings at Sydney and Gold Coast, coaching the legendary Tony Lockett in Sydney and dealing with Jason Akermanis at the Western Bulldogs See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brad Johnson talks about growing up in the Western suburbs of Melbourne and the significance of landing at Whitten Oval and then creating a legacy with his boyhood club. He remembers his participation in what became the Year of the Dogs, which was the Bulldogs' rapid ascension up the ladder following the appointment of Terry ‘Plough' Wallace as head coach. Wallace was a unique and passionate coach, and Johnson says it was no more evident than when he walked into the club on a Monday following a preliminary defeat to the Adelaide Crows to find Wallace with “we blew it” scrawled in pen on his forehead. Johnson also learnt the hard way to never talk about Wallace's at-home solarium. The 364-gamer, whose career spanned 16 years and saw him kick 558 goals, delights in the Western Bulldogs success of recent years.

Swansea beach rugby reimagined by Henry Reese. "Both Australia and Wales are host to a brawny football culture. All too often, this is a world of toxic masculinity, violence and exclusion. But within this culture there is also space for community, growth and diversity. "I wanted to bring the macho sounds of the beach rugby of Swansea into conversation with a more inclusive soundscape — that of the annual Pride Week match in the women's league of Australian rules football (AFLW). This match took place at Whitten Oval in Footscray, Melbourne on 22 February 2020. "Like the athletic bodies of the footy players, the sounds of the beaches of Swansea are warped and twisted and mixed into the earthy world of the AFLW. "I recorded a special moment. We hear the warm sounds of a diverse community using sport as a vehicle for family and community, as well as my friends gently teasing me about my eccentric field recording kit, joining an irreverent conversation on both sides of the microphone. "I was part of the crowd like everybody else. It was a peaceful Saturday afternoon, and I wanted to do this sunny moment justice. This piece is intended as a gentle tonic to hypermasculine footy culture."
As far as Barkly Street podcast guests go, Nathan Brown is just about the perfect fit to talk footy with Bob Murphy and Marcus Bontempelli. Brown, the star 219-gamer who booted 349 goals, played seven seasons at Whitten Oval before crossing to the Tigers, the club of choice for the Bulldogs podcast’s co-hosts. Top of the agenda for discussion is Brown’s role in the frenetic finish to the Dogs vs Tigers game of Round 5, 2008 – the drawn game in which he celebrated as if his team had triumphed. Brown also recalls his early years in the game, being given a ‘bath’ by Simon Goodwin as a youngster, needing to back up a double-page Herald Sun spread, and how he still regrets the nature of his exit from the Western Bulldogs. Brown also outlines the impact of his horrific leg injury, and nominates Chris Grant’s match-winning goal in 2000 against Essendon as one of his favourite football memories. Elsewhere on this week’s edition of Barkly Street, Bob and Bont chat through footy’s imminent return, how the Dogs players are connecting with each other in isolation, and the Bont tells the audience who he’s most keen to catch up with after social gathering restrictions are eased.

Goalkicking machine Simon Minton-Connell is the first guest on the Western Bulldogs' brand-new podcast, Glory Days. Following the success of the debut season of Freedom in a Cage, Bob Murphy is back behind the microphone for a series of podcasts for the NAB Trade and Draft hub on westernbulldogs.com.au, powered by Mercedes-Benz Vans. Weekly during the October and November player movement period, Bob will welcome a current or past great of the Club for a chat about their career, the influence the Bulldogs had on them, the characters they played with and against, and everything in between. Minton-Connell had a storied league career in the 1980s and 90s, which began at Carlton and saw him transfer to Sydney then Hawthorn, before playing out his final two years at Whitten Oval. Episode one of Glory Days explores his fearsome debut against Collingwood, the superstar team-mates he called his best mates, the opposition he respected and feared, his uncle Peter Hudson, and the momentum of Terry Wallace's Dogs in the 1997 season.
